Remote, mysterious and extreme, the island ofSpitsbergen is the jewel in Arctic Norway’s crown,a land forged by snow, ice, ocean and wind, thatpresents you with a spectacular range ofunforgettable adventures.

The aim of our 2019 expedition is tocircumnavigate Spitsbergen and discover theincredible Arctic flora and fauna.

Page 4: ˜ˇ! ˛ C · Sun Jun Heading North A true expedition day. We explore some of the most remote parts of the Svalbard Archipelago and will attempt to reach beyond 80° north. Here,

Located on the southern fringe ofthe ever frozen Arctic Ocean, wherethe warmer currents of the GulfStream meet the colder air andwater from the north, Spitsbergenand the other islands of the SvalbardArchipelago are a biological hotspot.

In the summer, thousands ofmigratory birds return to breed, andthere is intense bird activity at sea,in the bird cliffs and on the islands.Common sightings include the ArcticTern, Northern Fulmar, Ivory Gull,Little Auk, Atlantic Puffin, SnowBunting, Arctic Skua and theSvalbard Rock Ptarmigan (the onlyspecies that over-winters in thearchipelago).

Svalbard Reindeer and Arctic Fox areyear-round locals, and so too areNarwhals, Beluga and Bowheadwhales, walruses, and a selection ofseal species, including ringed, harbour and bearded varieties.

Ruling over this fragile and oftenfrozen kingdom is, of course, theregion’s top predator, themagnificent Polar Bear.

During the voyage you’ll hear aboutthe region’s early whaling era andhave the opportunity to visitfascinating communities likeBarentsburg, Longyearbyen and NyÅlesund. Each one very different incharacter, but with one thing incommon - a pioneer feeling.

Thankfully we now travel insomewhat more comfort than theearly explorers, but that certainlydoesn’t make this expedition anyless exciting. It’s an opportunity tosee what few have seen.

If you’re inclined to explore, don’tmiss this tour.

Widely accepted as one of the mostmodern expedition ships afloat,Hurtigruten’s MV FRAM has become afirm favourite with our guests.

Launched in 2007 with the aim tobring her guests closer to nature, wildlife and unforgettableexperiences, the FRAM is largeenough to provide stability, amplepublic space and comfortableaccommodations, and yet smallenough to sail in remote areas andget you close to the action.

MV FRAM facilities include a top deckpanorama lounge with floor-to-ceilingglass; spacious outside decksincluding access to the very front ofthe ship, a great place to observemarine wildlife; a choice of cabins allwith private facilities; a 24-hour teaand coffee station, library, lecturerooms, gym, sauna and heatedJacuzzi.

The FRAM’s friendly crew and staffinclude a dedicated, passionate andknowledgeable expedition team.

Fri 28 Jun 2019 Homebound

Sadly, every explorer voyage has tocome to an end. We disembark theMS FRAM this morning before flyingvia Oslo back to the UK.

You will probably sense that timehas passed faster than expected, however, the number of awesomeexperiences also feels impossible tohave happened in such a short time. So, bring back the memory of thatsolitary polar bear, the calvingglacier, or the buzzing birdlife – orsimply the subtle, odd feeling ofhaving spent time on top of theglobe, just a few hundred kilometresfrom the North Pole!
