Happy Retirement Charlene!

Top three: Charlene was soaking up the love and working the room. Above: Oh yes, then there was the deli-cious lunch - honey-glazed chicken, cole slaw, “heart attack” roll, a plate-sized chocolate chip cookie, and a pat of butter

just in case you wanted more butter on your heart attack. Above right: We filled the room with warm wishes for Charlene on her well-deserved retirement.

Relying on the spirit and story of the gospels, First Christian Church is supported primarily by donations. There is no charge for any event. We rely on freely given offerings to support our various minis-tries and opportunities.

Your contributions and gifts allow us to continue to be a radically inclusive, justice-driven community of faith every day of the week. Thank you in advance for your gifts.

From Charlene…I am feeling overjoyed, over-whelmed, humbled and very grate-ful for the wonderful “send off” into retirement! Thanks so much for the outpouring of love and sup-port and the many cards, gifts and well wishes. It has been my pleasure to have served as your church sec-retary and I am truly going to miss it. Thanks again for everything.Love to all,Charlene

Harvest Dinner RSVPsOur annual Harvest Dinner meal takes place on Sunday, November 19 following worship. RSVP to the church office, with the number of family and friends (in-cluding yourself) that plan to come. We also need your help with serving (during meal), clean-up (after meal), and monetary contributions to offset expenses. If you can help, please contact Pastor Matt via email or phone. Sign up sheets are also available on Sunday.

Thankyou,CharleneThank you so much to everyone who celebrated Charlene last week—35 of you showed up at a retirement lunch. I will admit that it was a little odd to walk into the office this morning and not see Charlene in the main office. She was the “face” of First Christian Church for many years and for that we owe her thanksgiving. We love you, Charlene!

OfficeManagerWe are currently looking for a new of-fice manager. The personnel commit-tee approved a job description and it will go before the church board for ap-proval. In the meantime, we will have a temporary employee in the front office from 9 – 2, Tuesday – Thursdays. We hope to hire someone permanently before the end of the year.

CraftFairResults are in! Well, preliminary re-sults are in. Based on our projections

of income and expense, we expect to profit about $8500 for Craft Fair. Some final number crunching is still expect-ed, but we hope to get a check to Jack-son Street Youth Services soon. Thank you to all who made this happen!

StewardshipSeasonIt is that time of year again…drum roll please…stewardship season! Over the next few weeks, we will be focusing on stewardship. You should receive a letter soon, along with an estimate of giving card. These estimates are a covenant between you and the com-munity that help us budget for next year. All names kept confidential and only known by our financial secretary. Dollar amounts are shared with our finance team for planning purposes. You may also wish to make an anony-mous pledge. Thank you in advancing for thinking about how you can give to the church. Our stewardship theme for the year is “Seeing a Different World.” I hope that your giving of time, talent, and treasure to our church is inspired by your vision for the future. We humbly ask, O God, that all these gifts of time, talent and treasure be multiplied to share your good news in this church, in our community, and around the world. Amen.Peace and love, Pastor Matt

Who Stole the Cookies? We are hosting an all church and friends luncheon and deliciously sweet mystery right after church on October 29. McLean Hall will be transformed into a library, where all sorts of book characters meet to dine and dish out clues. Can you figure out who stole the cookies before everyone else? For this event, you have a couple options. You can join for the lunch and be the “audience”. If you want to come dressed as a character and help distribute clues, we have many disguises to choose from. Please contact Beth Crawford, Dow Yeh, Christa Schmeder, or Christy Wright if you would like to sign up to be a character.

And more… stay tuned.

Advent BookletChristmas memories can be joyous but they can be sad as well. Memories con-taining loved ones that are now absent from our lives, memories of hopes and dreams never quite living up to the reality of the season much less our lives can haunt our reflections of Advent. Sometimes we must create new memories and traditions. Advent reflections can inspire us to new understandings of what it means to wait for Jesus. The theme this year is “In this house, sacred spaces and places.” Your reflection may be the very idea that breaths life into someone else. Submission deadline is November 12. Send submissions to Teresa at: [email protected]

2017 Thanksgiving Special OfferingFrom the very beginnings of the move-ment, Disciples have founded institu-tions of higher learning, encouraging students in their intellectual pursuits. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is still committed to higher education. Currently, over 50,000 students attend our fourteen Disciples related colleges and universities or seven seminaries and divinity houses. And in the past twelve months, over 12,000 students have graduated from these fine schools. On November 12 and 19, Disciples churches across the US and Canada will collect the Thanksgiving offering. Your gift to the Thanksgiving offer-ing helps to support the work of our institutions of higher learning in many ways: financially supporting Disciples related schools, providing undergradu-

ate scholarships and support for spiri-tual life offices, and providing scholar-ships and support for those pursuing theological education. This November, please give generously to this year’s Thanksgiving offering. Your gifts make a world of difference as Disciples continue our legacy of supporting education and our institu-tions of higher learning.
