As the maternal age is increasing and the American population is becoming more obese, the number of pregnancies complicated by diabetes and obesity also is increasing. The 14th Biennial Meeting of the Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Group of North America (DPSG-NA) serves as a vehicle for the dissemination of data, gathered through collaboration among basic, translational and clinical researchers and research centers, both nationally and internationally. The meeting will provide attendees with state-of-the-art information on the management of the pregnant patient with diabetes, as well as a forum to discuss novel research ideas and debate current controversies.

The 14th Biennial Meeting of the Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Group of North America will be a two-day symposium featuring didactic lectures, debates and interactive panel discussions, with audience-driven participation and question/answer sessions. The meeting will include a poster session of basic, preclinical and clinical biomedical research in topic areas selected by a DPSG-NA review committee. Internationally and nationally recognized experts will underscore the state-of-the-art relevant information in areas including obesity, metabolic syndrome, hypertension and diabetes. Specific topics that will be presented during the meeting will focus on new insights into the science of diabetes; glucose management; diabetes prevention; genetic underpinnings of diabetes and obesity; preconception care, nutrition, exercise, weight gain and obesity; pharmacokinetic considerations; diagnosis and consequences of diabetic fetopathy.

learning objectives

• Consult appropriate subspecialists to create an integrated team that will deliver optimal care for the diabetic pregnant patient

• Evaluate the pros and cons of pharmacologic options and glucose monitoring strategies. Furthermore, recognize the pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic type, dose and frequency for the treatment of diabetes in pregnancy and apply the information to individualize patient care

• Identify patients at highest risk for diabetic fetopathy by recognizing the mechanisms that lead to the abnormal fetal development and perform appropriate studies to make the diagnosis

• Identify patients at higher risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes due to obesity complications and adjust care during the preconception period and gestation

• Recognize the contributions of the placenta to long term health and disease to develop new technologies for real-time assessment of placental health across pregnancy

• Identify other uses of genomic testing to promote pregnancy outcomes, including, but not limited to, markers of placental health, patient response to pharmacological agents and susceptibility to diseases later in life

target audience

This conference is intended for obstetricians, gynecologists, geneticists, endocrinologists, nurses, midwives, residents, fellows, family practitioners, internists, students and healthcare professionals with a special interest in the treatment of the diabetic pregnant patient.
