Annual Charge Conference
November 12, 2019 7:00 pm
Redlands First Church 1 East Olive Ave., Redlands
All Church members are welcome to attend this
meeting.
Greetings!
The outdoor lighting project for the church campus is now completed. With a
help of Mike Hinckley, we installed new LED bulbs outside the altar on Beech. It
was the last part that needed outdoor lighting. As you pass by the church at night,
you can see how brightly the streets and parking lot are lit up. The lighting
improves not only security and safety but in a way speaks to the community how
we are doing. We no longer need street lighting from Edison and have asked them
to remove the lights. This would help us save over $700 a year.
Speaking of savings, for the last four years, the church has restructured and
improved their financial management. We have minimized our cost of operation. I can give you a couple of
examples. Our electric bills have gone down significantly by installing solar panels. Our system generates
more than our usage, which means that we no longer pay for the usage of electricity. But we still have to pay
Edison the demand and maintenance charges. Since the cost of installation was paid off, the reduction on the
bill is a pure savings. We also found a new company for the office copy machine, which saves about
$500/month. We make more copies but pay far less. While we have carefully managed our finances, we have
added more programs such as Parents Night Out and Community Movie days.
What is the reason behind all this effort to curtail our finances, but enhance the church’s operation? One main
objective is to revitalize the church and help it grow. It is not just leaders, staff, and your pastor who have made
this progress, but also you have worked on these together. Please remember that your presence, prayers, and
service are very critical for the growth of the church. Your continued support for the ministry of Jesus Christ
through the House of Faith is greatly appreciated.
Let me share with you some potential sources of revenue. Our church hosted a beautiful wedding for a young
couple last month. The sanctuary for a wedding ceremony and the fellowship hall for reception were
beautifully decorated. Hot weather did not interfere with the wedding at all. A powerful A/C in the fellowship
hall in particular made the reception very pleasant. We need to spread the word that we have the prettiest
sanctuary, and a fully equipped spacious hall in Yucaipa to accommodate any event.
A cell tower company was interested in building a tower on our campus a couple of months ago. After they
checked with the city and performed a land survey, they learned that the city would not need another tower in
our location for now. Please pray that they would need to build one sooner than later.
Let me give you a couple of wild ideas, which would generate income, but have some challenges. I have
looked into developing the lower parking lot instead of selling it. The city of Yucaipa has offered to buy it for
$70,000 and it is not going to help our finance as much as I would like. Other options are, we could find a
developer, who would build housing at his cost and we could collect the land lease. Or we could build the
apartment units. In my estimation, 6 to 8 units of apartments could be built on the lot. An average apartment in
Yucaipa is about $1300.
The Charge Conference date is postponed from Sunday, October 27th to Tuesday, November 12, 7:00 pm. It
will be held at Redlands First. If you chair a committee, please work on your annual report and bring it to the
office by the end of October. Linda in the office will need time to compile and print reports. All those who
serve in the Administrative Council are expected to be there.
See you in church, Phillips

Thank you to everyone who came to support our
EPIC Youth for the SSP Fundraiser Lunch and
Slideshow! After the food costs, we made $270 from
your generous meal donations to add to our
2020 fund. The youth did a wonderful job of sharing the stories about their SSP work and adventures in the National City area last summer. In 2020, we plan to go to Lake County. This is a new site that is north of Sacramento. SSP will be working in concert with three non-profits
that are building tiny cottages that will provide permanent, safe housing for the homeless. High school youth should make a $50 skin-in-the-game payment to be part of the 2020 trip by December 1, 2019.
Stater Bros. Scrip Program Your participation in the Scrip program adds income to the church budget. Please see the ladies in the fellowship hall

Bible Study with Rev. Deena Barwick
There are two passages of scripture that seem
undeniably "the same" - one from the Old
Testament and one from the New Testament. Is
one a prophecy and the other a fulfillment? OR is
the Psalm passage so important that it is repeated
to remind us to care for others? Or is it something
entirely different? I invite you for interesting
discussions with an in-depth study of Psalm 34
with a different approach to this passage in
Matthew. This will be a 4-week informal bible
study scheduled for Tuesdays: October 15, 22, 29
and November 5th. You may attend either the
2:30 pm or the 6:00 pm session or move between
them as your schedule allows. We will meet in
the Library. Please join us to discover how God
is calling us to a deeper understanding of caring
for others. Coffee and Tea will be provided.
As we grow in discipleship, we are
able to use more and more of the
resources entrusted to us for the
mission of sharing the love of Jesus
Christ and God's Kingdom in our
community. October is
Stewardship month, and October
27 will be Pledge Sunday. May we
all prayerfully consider how we can
give and grow in faith.
