Recently, the parish council decided to change the format of our quarterly mailings. Rather than mailing out service schedules and a letter, we have decided to publish a quarterly parish bulletin and revive the title of Fr. Nikolajs’ journal. We hope our bulletin will better inform you about the life of our parish. Service schedules will remain available at the parish candle desk and can also be downloaded from our website. The bulletin will contain a condensed version of the service schedules. Should you have any news or photos of parish events to share, please feel free to email me at [email protected].

Fr. Edward’s Pilgrimage to Russia

From September 2-19, Fr. Edward made a pilgrimage to Russia, visiting Moscow, Izhevsk, Votkinsk, and Pskov. In connection with the glorification of the New Martyrs, Archpriest Nicholas (Chernyshev) and his daughter Barbara [+1918], Fr. Edward had written to His Eminence, Metropolitan Victorin of Izhevsk, requesting relics of these saints. In June, His Eminence responded affirmatively, but with the condition that Fr. Edward come to Izhevsk personally to receive the relics. Fr. Edward visited Izhevsk and Votkinsk from September 5-9. During that time, he was hosted by Fr. Georgii Kharin. Along with visiting many churches and historical sites, Fr. Edward was interviewed on a local Orthodox radio program hosted by Fr. Georgii and was featured on the local television news during his excursion to the local history museum. On Sunday, September 8, Fr. Edward concelebrated the Divine Liturgy at the Archangel Michael Cathedral in Izhevsk, where he received the relics of these new martyrs. Returning to Moscow, Fr. Edward served at Saint Cathrine’s Church for the feast of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist. Saint Cathrine’s Church is the Representation parish of the Orthodox Church in America to the Russian Orthodox Church. During the weekend of September 14-15, Fr. Edward served at the Church of the Archangel Michael at Mikahilovskaya Sloboda in the Moscow Region. This community has a unique heritage in that they are Old Ritualists in union with the Russian Orthodox Church. From September 16-18, Fr. Edward visited the ancient city of Pskov and the Pskov Caves Monastery, which is the only monastery in Russia never closed during the Soviet times and has become world renowned since the publication of the book Everyday Saints (Несвятые святые). Fr. Edward returned home on September 19.
