October is cyber security month. It’s a good time to take a step back and look at the security of your devices and online activity. Try these techniques to guard your devices.

● Install anti-virus software. Be sure your computer or laptop has anti-virus software, such as McAfee or Norton installed and updated.

● Password protect devices. You can “lock” your devices including computer, tablet and telephone by setting them so you will need to enter a password before using or after a period of inactivity.

● Think before acting. It can be easy to panic if you receive an urgent request. Ignore pop-up messages or emails that say there is a problem with your bank account or taxes. Do not click on any links in these emails as that is how thieves get personal information! Take a deep breath and get a second opinion from a trusted advisor or pick up the phone and call your bank or credit card company.

● Share with care. Social media is a great way to stay in touch with friends and family. To protect your private communications, set your privacy settings to limit who can see your information and avoid sharing your location.

● Log out. Close and log out of websites and apps after you use them especially if you’ve typed in personal information such as address or credit card.

● Continue to learn. The best way to protect your online privacy is to use the tools available. Low or no cost classes are available at Surrey. Check the calendar pages and try one.

MENTAL HEALTH IS KEY FOR OVERALL HEALTH

October 10 is World Mental Health Day. Mental health is important at every age but especially for older adults. That’s because aging often contributes to conditions such as depression, anxiety and cognitive issues. In fact, nearly 18% of U.S. adults over age 65, nearly 8 million people, have one or more mental health or substance use conditions.

Good mental health contributes greatly to overall well-being. Untreated mental disorders in older adults can lead to diminished functioning, substance abuse, poor quality of life, and increased mortality.

Being involved with Surrey is a good step for positive mental health. Taking part in center activities or volunteering can help to avoid social isolation. Exercising and eating nutritious Surrey lunches will also help to maintain overall health.

As someone who has personally experienced a family member’s mental illness, I understand that recognizing the issues and getting professional help is not an easy thing. Surrey’s Mental Health Program puts members in touch with community resources. If you would like more information about this program, please contact your center director or Christi Seidel in Devon at 484-321-6104.

Personal Finance CornerTIME TO GET ORGANIZEDHow long should I keep financial statements, bills, medical statements etc? While it is important to keep any paperwork in a place where you can easily locate it, it’s also important to discard any paperwork with personal details in a careful way. Many people hold on to paperwork much longer than necessary.

Save• Estate planning documents such as a

will, power of attorney, medical power of attorney or health care directive.

• Loan-discharge notices. Keep these forever because you may need proof that you paid off a loan, including student loans and automobiles.

• Birth and death certificates, marriage licenses, divorce decrees, Social Security cards, military discharge papers, permanent life insurance policies: Keep all forever in a safe place.

Shred• Credit card receipts and statements.

Shred once you’ve checked that your monthly statement matches the receipts. These are often where people keep way too many items of them.

• Bills. You can shred your bills as soon as your payment clears.

Jacky Kennedy-Sisson, Surrey’s Personal Finance Manager, will lead a free presentation, Save or Shred, on

Tuesday, October 29, 12:30 – 1:30 pm at Surrey East Goshen. For assistance organizing paperwork, paying bills or filing medical

claims, contact Jacky at 610-647-9840 for more information.

Medicare Corner by Sometimes it’s easier to get everything you need in cost, coverage and convenience by bringing the benefits of parts of Medicare, plus a few others, together in one simple plan. That’s the idea behind Medicare Advantage. Medicare Advantage is Medicare Part C. These plans are provided by private insurance companies and include coverage for everything Original Medicare covers. Many plans also include extra benefits, such as fitness club membership, hearing, vision, prescription drug and dental coverage. Medicare Part C coverage is provided through a private insurance company and usually comes with a network of doctor and hospitals. There is an annual out-of-pocket maximum.

The costs of a Medicare Advantage plan may differ from the costs you pay with Original Medicare in a few ways.

• Premiums: Continue to pay monthly Part B premiums to Medicare in addition to any premiums to the company that provides the plan.

• Deductibles: Deductibles may vary from plan to plan. Some plans don’t require a deductible at all.

• Copayments: You may pay a smaller copayment than you would under Original Medicare.

Medicare Advantage plans provide extra benefits at a reasonable price because they are administered through private insurance companies like Aetna. The government then reimburses these insurance companies for each Medicare Advantage member. Medicare Advantage plans also offer more benefits at a reasonable price because they use coordinated care within a network of providers. It is very important you make sure your doctors are in the Medicare Advantage plan that’s right for you.

There are noted perks to Medicare Advantage plans such as:

• Lifestyle coaching program: Talk with a health coach about how to manage stress, quit smoking and improve diet.

• A multidisciplinary care management team: Connect to the right resources, coordinate benefits and ensure better organization of care.

• Online tools and resources: Look up guides to make healthy decisions and manage conditions.

On the surface, Joanie looked as though she lived a wonderful life. She and her husband were retired, lived in a nice house, traveled and socialized with friends. But Joanie was coping with her husband Jim’s downward spiral into depression. She realized something was wrong when her formerly energetic, outgoing husband had no energy, no appetite, no drive.

Many men deny they are depressed and resist treatment, either medication or therapy, because they believe depression is a sign of weakness or a woman’s disease, according to Julie Totten, founder of Families for Depression Awareness. Realizing that depression can affect anyone at any age is the first step toward recovery.

Joanie was able to persuade her husband to bring up his lack of energy and appetite during his annual check up. His doctor realized Jim might be depressed and referred him to a mental health professional. Jim is now being treated with a combination of medication and talk therapy.

Joanie’s advice? Don’t try to force someone who seems depressed to snap out of it with more activities or socializing. See a doctor or reach out to other people who may be able to help get your husband to accept treatment.

If you are caring for someone with a chronic illness, like depression,
