The birth flowers for the month of October are the Marigold and the Cosmos. Marigolds are often given as a sign of warm or fierce undying love or as a way of saying that you’re content to be with the one you love. Cosmos are a symbol of order, peace, and serenity. These semi-tall annuals are often planted along borders. Cosmos will attract birds, bees, and butterflies to your garden.

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to support this year’s auction! As of the time of this

writing, the event is sold out and we have countless amazing items to auction off at our cornerstone event. Depending on when you are reading this, there might still be time to sneak in some larger donations between now and October 6th. So if you’ve come across something of great value that you want to Donate, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the office. Here’s to a great auction and thank you to all the volunteers who truly made it happen. With regards to the rest of the Center, I know many of you have been concerned about the faded lines in the parking lot. We know that has turned parking into a bit of a guessing game where close enough will do! We have some parking lot repairs and restriping scheduled for October. So help is on the way. Now we just have to pray that early snow is not on the way in October so we can complete this project. In the coming months we will also begin reconstruction of our Lincoln street door and begin the installation of an amazing security system thanks to some grant funding. We truly want Corbin to be a safe place for all to enjoy and we’ll spare no effort to make that happen.

As the weather turns cold we’ve got a great set up of fall events to enjoy. On Friday, November 9th we will have our annual veteran’s lunch. This event is free to veterans and free to veteran spouses. So if your spouse ever served, you get to come eat free in their honor. The event of course is open to all Corbin members for $15 if you have never served. It’s a great meal from Nordic Smoke BBQ and you’ll be glad you came. We’ve got our craft fair coming up on December 8th and 9th which is in perfect time for your holiday shopping needs. So mark that weekend down and come out enjoy some amazing craftsmanship. Finally, on December 14th we will be hosting our annual Christmas Lunch. This year the wonderful staff of Corbin have decided to produce a family style Christmas lunch for the members. Don’t worry, when I say the staff of Corbin I mean all the wonderful cooks in our office minus myself. I’ll be there to pour the water and coffee but that’s about the best I can do when it comes to cooking. So plan to come down and let the staff serve you for the holidays! Much thanks and keep spreading the good word about Corbin to all of Spokane’s seniors.

An open letter to my Corbin friends: Please join me on Mackinac Island & Holland Tulip Festival!

Although most of you may identify Michigan with the automobile indus-try, I can tell that there is a lot more to Michigan than that! Michigan is sur-rounded by the shores of the Great Lakes, Michigan, Superior, Huron and Erie. That’s four of the five great lakes! There is a lot of natural beauty to enjoy that most are unaware of. We’ll be discovering it on this nostalgic trip for me. I can not wait to show you places of my childhood. I was raised in Lansing until age 17 when I left home and joined the Army. I have been to and experienced so many of the places that are on this trip offered through Corbin. I can’t wait to share some of the knowledge I have about the sites we will see! I have never had the opportunity to go visit the world fa-mous and elegant Grand Hotel, it’s always been a dream of mine to stay there. Did you know that Mackinac is pronounced: Mack-In-Naw, and that we’ll get to shop at one of the largest Christmas Stores in the world! Not to mention that motorized vehicles are not allowed on the island to preserve its charm! It would be wonderful to have my Corbin friends along to enjoy the experience with me.—Kermit Shaull

On Safari In Kenya: Land Only September 21st-28th, 2019 **Moderate Tour Leader: Christa Richardson First stop and most magnificent is the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya’s most famous game area. During five game drives, keep your eyes open for elephant, rhino, giraffe, topi, hyena, lion, and much more. Beyond the Maasai Mara, visit Mount Kenya National Park, where your treetop lodge gives you unobstructed views of the waterhole that attracts elephant and buffalo. You’ll also enjoy a guided forest walk with a naturalist followed by a bush breakfast here. In Lake Nakuru National Park search for flamingo, gi-raffe, waterbuck, zebra, Cape buffalo, impala, and more. In Lake Naivasha National Park, a guided walk offers the chance to see giraffe and zebra and meet elephant calves orphaned by poachers at the Sheldrick Elephant Or-phanage in Nairobi. You’ll also visit a special beading project that helps pro-vide training and job opportunities for local women. Plus, to ensure you can capture the perfect photograph, have a window seat, and have easy game viewing. Magnificent wildlife, important animal sanctuaries, and thrilling ad-ventures—this exciting Kenya safari is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure!

Managing Concerns About Falls “A Matter of Balance” classes return to Corbin!

Presentation by: Aging & Long Term Care Please check schedule below for dates & Information Upper North & South rooms

Have you turned down a chance to go out with family or friends because you were concerned about falling? Have you cut down on a favorite activity because you might fall? If so, A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns about Falls is a program for you.

Aging & Long Term Care is again offering A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls at Corbin Senior Activity Center in October 2018. The eight session class series will be held on Monday and Thursday mornings,

Ways for Seniors to Get Involved in The Local Community

Social isolation is a common danger for seniors. Not only can there be psychologi-cal consequences—loneliness, depression—but there are physical health risks as-sociated as well, such as cardiovascular disease, decreased physical activity, in-creased risk for dementia, exacerbated symptoms of chronic illness such as arthritis, and increased mortality. Social networks within senior living communi-ties are a good place to start when it comes to preventing isolation and its compli-cations, but it’s also important to involve seniors in their local community. Here are a few ways that seniors can fight isolation by getting involved and giving back to their communities:

Volunteering Corbin is always in need of Volunteers. The rewarding benefits of volunteering cannot be overstated. Seniors who regular-ly participate in volunteer programs experience improved mental health, extended longevity, and greater overall wellbeing. Volunteering in and around the communi-ty helps seniors feel like they are making a difference and gives them a sense of purpose that decreases the likelihood of succumbing to loneliness or experiencing isolation. Volunteer groups also provide a positive social network that connects seniors to the larger local community.

Religious Communities Seniors who have been lifelong churchgoers should be encouraged to maintain membership and weekly attendance at their place of worship. The social connec-

tions built within congregations provide a strong network of support that benefits people of all ages, but is especially beneficial for seniors. Churches also offer a va-riety of ways for seniors to actively contribute to the community—helping out with Sunday school, bringing after-service treats, or attending bible study.

Lifelong Education Signing up for a weekly class or workshop is a great way for seniors to combat iso-lation and promote overall wellness. Not only are classes an opportunity to make new social connections, but they allow seniors to pursue hobbies or interests that they may not have had time to explore before retirement. The benefits aren’t just social. Research shows that participating in lifelong learning helps prevent cognitive decline and decreases risk of developing dementia or Alzheimer’s. Local colleges often offer continuing education programs for adults of all ages, and most senior living communities also provide educational opportunities for residents.

Close to Home If transportation or physical abilities limit excursions into the local community, there are still plenty of ways to get involved in social networks closer to home. Paratransit, ride share, Uber or a taxi can all get you to Corbin. Once here, you can share your time and talents with like-minded seniors. Join committees, play games, attend Happy Hour, Dinner Club, try your luck at a casino, lunch with a new found friend. Take a day trip or see the world. We have been successful at meeting the many needs of our members.

Arthritis? Joint Pain? Diabetes? Parkinson's? Digestive issues? Glaucoma? Osteoporosis? Neuropathy? If these are symptoms that you have, perhaps we can help. The mention of CBD some-times strikes fear into those that think they will get "high." This is NOT the case with CBD derived from the Hemp plant. Most of you have probably heard of CBD, but....because of the stigma attached to the plant, are unsure as to HOW and WHY it can help. We, at The Source, would like to answer those questions for you. We would like to give you some education as WHAT CBD is and how it works in our bodies. The healing properties from this little plant are truly amazing! We would like to take the fear away and we would really like to help. That has been our mission for the past 2 years. We

believe the benefits of CBD can help, through many different facets of the body. Please RSVP with reception 327-1584

CAT LOVERS WILL UNDERSTAND

by Beth Daniels

Those of us who love our cats, forget that essentially, our kitties are fundamentally animals, until they remind us with their ‘animal’ behavior. In the middle of the night when I was asleep, I heard my cat meow at me. I woke up enough to reach and pet her. Then, I began to realize she was restless and moving around quite a bit. All of a sudden, I woke up realizing she had used her special guttural meow earlier … a significant hint! I jumped out of bed and turned the light on. Sure enough she was ‘looking’ for something in my bed. I pulled back my quilt and there it was … a live mouse! I quickly covered it back up before Truffles (my cat) could grab it, and cause more issues. I then stood there going through the heebie jeebies trying to decide what to do. I didn’t want to lose it or have Truffles take it and lose it somewhere in the house.

I quickly emptied my waste paper basket and ran to the kitchen for a pot holder. I returned, swept the quilt back, grabbed the mouse with the pot holder, and put both pot holder and mouse into the waste basket and ran out side and tossed the mouse into the flower bed. I was standing there making utterances of eek, yuk and so forth when I then real-ized I was out on my front stoop in my night shirt! After being back in the house a few minutes, I put things away and began removing the bedding that had been ‘touched’ by the mouse. My mom woke up and was on her way to the bathroom. I was so relieved to have someone to share my experi-ence with! In her groggy state of mind, she listened to my story and broke out in the giggles! She was still giggling when she climbed back into bed. That’s what I get for sharing my experience with someone who grew up on a farm! So the les-son of this story … pay close attention when a cat utters that guttural loud meow that means I’ve brought you a treat!

Eleven WII bowlers from Corbin competed in the September 14, 2018 All City Wii Bowling Tournament that was held at the Spokane Valley Baptist Church. There were approximately 114 Wii bowlers from across the city with 13 teams participating. Each bowler bowls one game. After a valiant effort by all 11 members, we had a nice lunch and visit and came home with a trophy as a result of our efforts. Ron Easterby bowled a 255 which was Corbin’s best game today. Yolanda Call bowled a nice 245, Carril Cramer turned in 237, Mary Kay played 225, Betty Salamone turned in 202 and Betty Rash bowled 195. With these six bowlers Corbin earned the fifth place team trophy with an average of 226.5. The other Corbin bowlers playing today were June Robbins, Bonnie Harland, Geri Phillips, and Ira Rash. Bonnie and Ira won door prizes. The first place trophy was won with an average of 245. We needed one more good 200 game to give us a better trophy but Paul Ruch who was supposed to be there was somehow lost in the Spokane Val-ley. He did turn up bowling at Corbin that same morning. We are still waiting for an explanation on that one. The next scheduled all City Tournament will be held on Friday, October 26, 2018 at the same place. All who want to bowl on this date please let Mary Kay know a few weeks before this date. Mary Kay Bryan—Bowling Coordinator.

A RETIREE’S LAST TRIP TO COSTCO!!

Yesterday I was at Costco, buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet, Owen, the Wonder Dog and was in the check-out line when a women behind me asked if I had a dog. What did she think I had, an elephant? So because I’m retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn’t have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn’t because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IV’s in both arms. I told her that it was essentially a Perfect Diet and that the way that it works, is you load your pants pockets with Purina nuggets and simply

eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete ( I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story) Horrified, she ask if I ended up in intensive care, because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I had stopped to pee on a fire hydrant and a car hit me. Well, I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack, he was laughing so hard. Costco won’t let me shop there anymore. Better watch what you ask retired people. They have all the time in the world to think of crazy things to say.
