October 12, 2016 Member Meeting Basic TRIZ: Finding creative solutions to complex problems

Presented by: Akhilesh Gulati

Presentation synopsis: The immediate future is rife with unresolved open problems. Our quality of life will depend on the decisions we make. Business leaders, education think tanks, and politicians list ‘creativity’ and ‘critical thinking; as two of the top skills we need to succeed in our increasingly competitive global community. TRIZ is a creative prob-lem solving, analysis and forecasting body of knowledge and application derived from the study of invention patterns in the global patent literature. Beginning in 1946 and still evolving, TRIZ was developed by the Soviet inventor Genrich Altshuller (now deceased) and his colleagues. TRIZ is rapidly gaining popularity as a robust methodology for defining and resolving difficult contradictions that stand as barriers to product, process and business innovation. While six sigma and lean methodologies have helped organizations gain a competitive edge through reducing variation and non-value added activi-ties, they have not necessarily helped them find innovative solutions or strategies using technology fore-casting. The presentation will provide a primer on TRIZ, and will also cover examples of how TRIZ (Theory of Inventive Problem Solving) helped find innovative solutions to 'lean' and other challenging problems. Today TRIZ is used to generate creative solutions in a variety of corporate settings under a variety of circumstances. By attending this clinic presentation, you will be able to… ¨ Explain TRIZ as a problem solving methodology ¨ Identify and define problem in terms of contradictions ¨ Understand a number of key TRIZ elements, such as:

à Functional analysis à The Ideal Final Result and Ideality à Utilization of Resources à Functional analysis

Our speaker: Akhilesh Gulati Akhilesh Gulati is the CEO of Pivot Adapt, Inc. a company focused on Big Data Analytics and a Principal of Piv-ot Management Consultants helping companies implement change strategies through Lean, Six Sigma and TRIZ. He has over 25 years of experience in operations and process improvement, design, lean, Six Sigma, strategic planning, and TRIZ (structured innovation) training and consulting. Akhilesh has been active with ASQ for over 25 years, is a past chair of Section 702 and most of us know him through his presentations to our Section and his Radical Thinking articles. Akhilesh holds M.S. in Naval Archi-tecture and Marine Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and an MBA from UCLA.
