WPA again hosted a very successful SA 50 km Race Walking Championship at the Youngsfield

Military Base. WPA is proud to announce that we placed 3rd overall. Well done to the Race Walking

Commission and the committed team who assisted in delivering a very successful event, despite the

    horrible weather conditions.

The WPA Annual Awards evening was hosted on 25 October; we were thrilled to witness an

enthusiastic and well attended event and would like to thank the clubs, athletes and administrators

for their support. A complete list of award winners and photographs are available on

    www.wpa.org.za.

WPA is anticipating an exciting Track and Field season. The season has started and we witnessed an

excellent performance from Zandri Bailey with a throw of 48:41 and also a PB in the Junior Women

    Javelin competition.

  • The final leg of the Kids Athletics program is well under way. Some excellent performances have

already been achieved by the participating children. Special thanks must be expressed to Allen,

Aphiwe and Tracy for their hard work and long hours facilitating this program.

Coupled with that is the next round of WPA Coaches Courses to be held in November.

The club administration program continues to facilitate a smooth and correct admin database

within the province at all levels. The program updates will soon be completed; this will assist clubs in

communicating directly with their members. The current member information must be completed

before licenses will be sold to the club for the 2014 season.

    RACE WALKING

SA 50km and Interprovincial Race Walking Championships – Cape Town – 12 October 2013

Western Province Athletics once again played host to the SA 50km and Interprovincial Race Walking

Championships at Youngsfield. Despite some of our best SA walkers competing at the World Masters

Championships in Brazil, we saw a record number of 196 race walkers from 9 different Provinces

competing in the various race distances from 50km down to the 3km. Credit must go to Western

Province Athletics for stepping up in support of hosting the event at such short notice. Athletes were

greeted by a cold, grey, wet and windy morning. This never deterred any spectators from supporting

their athletes – possibly the fact that Olympian Marc Mundell and African Champion Lebogang

Shange in action in the 20k had something to do with it.

13 Athletes took part in the 50km. Sandra Steenkamp (AGN) and Mojalefa Molise (AGN) won Gold

for their Province in a time of 5:19:53 and 4:23:39 respectively.

Some amazing individual race walking results were achieved; our own Ross McDonald bettered the

previous SAMA M40 record in the 10k in a time of 48:54, Fred Clements (AGN) broke the M70 SAMA

record in 1:06:39 in the 10k and David Morgan-Smith (ASWD) bettered the M75 record in 1:08:01 in

the same race. In the 20km Ladies race, CGA race walker Elsa Meyer (W65) bettered the SAMA

record with her time of 2:03:18.

Anel Oosthuizen (ASWD) competing as a Junior made it quite clear that she was going for a new SA

Record which she bettered by over a minute with a time of 49:25. She is now ranked 40th in the

Junior World Rankings for the 10km walk. Another stunning performance was achieved by young

Pierre Vermaak (CGA) competing in the 5km. He set a magnificent time of 23:27. This is a great

comeback after being hit by a taxi while out training two years ago.

The racing concluded with the 1km development race, where our little WPA development

walkers entertained the crowds with some stylish striding.

After all the walking, the medal table did the talking. Although winning the most medals, WPA

finished in third with 11 Gold medals. CGA finished second with 12 gold medals with AGN taking the

honours to finish first with 13 Gold medals.

A special word of thanks must go out to the City of Cape Town for their contributions, as well as the

WPA office for their hard work in assisting the WPRWC to host a very successful Championship.

Next year promises to be even bigger and better with the future of not only SA race walking, but also

    WPA race walking looking bright.

ANOTHER RECORD FIELD FOR OUTSURANCE 94.5 KFM GUN RUN

A record field of close to 19 000 runners and walkers took to the streets of Cape Town in this year’s

OUTsurance 94.5 Kfm Gun Run half marathon, 10km and 5km run/walk on a chilly Cape Town

    morning.

The perfect running conditions saw local runner David Manya take line hounors in 64:09, with

Lindikhaya Mthangayi in second in 64:21 and Xolisa Tjali third in 64:37. Manja took home R5 000 for

    his efforts.

Tanith Maxwell won the ladies half marathon in 77:24, with Fortunate Chidviso (77:43) and Thabita

Tsatsa (78:32) taking second and third places respectively. Maxwell also pocketed R5 000.

The 10km saw Sibusiso Madikizela win in 29:32 and Nomvuyisi Seti win the women’s race in 35:38.

Councillor Grant Pascoe, mayoral committee member for tourism, events & marketing for the City of

Cape Town, fired the Cape Field Artillery gun to start the half marathon and ward councillor for the

Atlantic Seaboard fired the cut off gun at 10h30.

The regiment and firing of the gun have been an integral part of the event since 2003. Traditionally

the event started at 09h00 and runners had to finish the event before the noonday gun was fired

    from Signal Hill.

Formed in 1857, the Cape Field Artillery is the oldest operational volunteer artillery regiment in the

British Commonwealth. The regiment has a close relationship with the City and fires the 21-gun salute

    at the opening of Parliament.

  • A cheque for R40 000 was presented to Anna Brom from the Anna Foundation, thanks to generous

donations from the runners taking part. The Foundation is a non-profit organisation working with

children who live on farms and in rural areas of the Western Cape. Their mission is to support rural

communities through its education, sports and life development programmes. They recognise each

child as unique and special, and aim to equip each one with skills for life-long learning. To find out

    NEW BALANCE MULTISPORT CLUB

New Balance Multisport Club going places

    (by Tracey le Roux)

Providing a home for runners, cyclists, trail runners, triathletes and canoeists from all over the Western

Cape, the New Balance Multisport Club (NBMC) had a landmark year in 2013 by celebrating its fifth

birthday and reaching over the 1,000 member mark.

The oldest member of the club is 71 years old and the youngest is 12, NBMC is all about getting the

whole family out there doing what they love, be it on the road, trail or in the water.

NBMC is a multi-sport club where members can cross disciplines to suit their training needs without

belonging to a different club for each sport. We offer road running, trail running and cycling training,

in turn there is a tri-athlete program for all cross training athletes.

NBMC hosted its annual Trail Run event namely the Dudley Trail Run in April. This was a great success

being held on the beautiful De Grendel farm. The two routes 8km and 15km respectively definitely

challenged the runners and the Cape Town weather also played its part for a successful day. NBMC

also believes in contributing to the surrounding community by assisting in both the hosting of the

Medihelp Tekkie 10km Challenge and the Fairmont High School Fun Run. NBMC also sponsors a

developmental team, who we often see enjoying podium positions on the road and trail thanks to

their hard work and the guidance of a dedicated coach.

Road running training is held at PP Smit Sports Grounds in Durbanville every Tuesday and Thursday at

17:45 under the dedicated instruction of Coach Albert van Zyl. Albert is an experienced runner with

great insight into getting club members to push themselves in achieving the elusive PBs we all strive

    towards.

  • Trail running and cycling is practiced in the surrounding winelands and hills of Durbanville under the

guidance of Captain Cornel Botha. In both disciplines there are two groups for both beginners and

those that are a bit faster and can go further. At NBMC we cater for all types of enthusiasts. Trail

Running is on a Wednesday night and there is an organized longer pack run monthly. The cyclists

have their out rides on a Saturday morning as well as hill training on Tuesday and Thursday evening.

Mountain bike training is also on the schedule.

At NBMC we call ourselves the Red Army. We are the club with the bright red shirts which can be

seen from afar. You will see us on the road, on the trail and at cross country. On foot or on a bike we

will be in our very well designed, for the specific discipline, red shirt. At NBMC it is all about enjoying

being out and doing the sport we love to the best of our ability and we love cheering on our fellow

members. Visit our website to see our great vibe of multi sports www.newbalanceclub.com.

EventsEventsEventsEvents OLD MUTUAL TWO OCEANS MARATHON

New Entry Process for World’s Most Beautiful Half Marathon

The Old Mutual Two Oceans Half Marathon isn’t only the world’s most beautiful 21.1km race, but also

one of the most sought after.

This year, in an effort to alleviate pressure on the online entry system and to give runners a fair

chance to enter, the organisers have introduced a phased approach to the 2014 Half Marathon

entries, which includes application into an entry draw in January 2014.

During the first phase, which is currently running, runners must update their personal profiles and

medical details on the race administration system, while new entrants are encouraged to create

their profiles. This is to speed up the process on the respective entry days, when runners will simply

    return and finalise their payment.

    • Phase 2: Blue and Light Blue Number holders may access the system from 10h00 on 5 November 2013 to finalise their entry. Entries are limited to 1 000 runners.

    • Phase 3: All runners with valid SA running club licences may finalise their payment from 10h00 on 11 November 2013, with entries being limited to 5 500 entrants. This includes runners who

haven’t participated in the Two Oceans Marathon before.

    • Phase 4: Previous Two Oceans Half and Ultra Marathon and Trail Run finishers may confirm their entry from 10h00 on 14 November 2013 (limited to 2 000 entrants).

  • The fifth and final entry phase will take place from 10h00 on 22 January 2014, when new entrants,

previous participants who finished outside the cut-off and those who missed their original entry batch

may submit their applications into an entry draw. A random electronic draw on 23 January will

select 6 000 entrants who may proceed to pay for their entry.

    How to enter

Runners are encouraged to visit www.twooceansmarathon.org.za/enter and update their personal

and medical details before entries open. They can then simply return to the website on their

particular entry day to finalise their payment and secure a place at the start.

Half Marathon entries will only be available online.

    Charity groups invited

Charity organisations wishing to use the Half Marathon as a platform for their fundraising efforts, are

invited to apply to the organisers for a group entry batch.

More information, as well as the downloadable application form, can be found at

http://www.twooceansmarathon.org.za/information/charity-entries and applications must reach the

organisers by 8 November 2013. Entry group and batches are limited.

Entries for Ultra Marathon still open

Entries for the 56km Ultra Marathon are still open and runners can enter online or download an entry

form from the website. South African Ultra Marathon entrants are required to belong to a registered

running club and have a valid running licence. No temporary licences will be issued to Ultra

    Marathon runners.

Entries into the 10km and 22km Trail Run will open at 10h00 on Monday, 2 December 2013.

The Two Oceans Marathon website has been upgraded to ensure a better user experience for

athletes, and is jam-packed with information around the various events hosted under its banner.

“Designed to Run” is the theme that supports the 2014 Two Oceans Marathon marketing campaign -

a coincidental hat-tip to Cape Town’s status as the World Design Capital next year.

    WP KIDS ATHLETICS

The Kids Athletics summer series is off to a great start with so much enthusiasm from the clubs and

juniors. The first event was held on the 12 October at Vygieskraal Central Hockey, the turnout was

amazing, despite the wet and windy weather. We were blessed with beautiful weather for the

events that followed on the 19 October at Bellville Stadium (a fitness assessment session was also

included) and the 26 October at VOB Club House in Constantia.

  • This past weekend we hosted the 4th league event at Muizenberg Pavilion. Waves for Change, a

local NGO that works with vulnerable young adults across Cape Town, were invited to host “Trust

    Building” activities with the kids.

To close the season, WPA is organising the WP Kids Athletics Awards, scheduled to take place on 9

November at the Green Point Urban Park. The clubs involved in the WP Kids Athletics programme

have worked very hard and everyone involved needs to be recognised and appreciated for

    dedication.

WPA is eagerly looking forward to 2014 as we start preparing to welcome new clubs to join this

    amazing programme.

WPA would like to appeal to new clubs who are interested in becoming involved in the programme

    for 2014 and beyond.

WPA is willing to invest in committed clubs who want to grow, develop and groom their club juniors.

The programme is very demanding and club facilitators need to be able to sacrifice their weekends

(mostly Saturday) to make sure that their kids’ athletics future is well developed and monitored.

Should your club be interested or require further information about the program and the

requirements, please send an email to Aphiwe Martins: [email protected].

We look forward to welcoming new dedicated and enthusiastic clubs to the programme in 2014.
