Specialized learning for the whole child

News from the co-principalsLinden Grove School continues to expand its student population, space, staffing, and innovative programs. We work hard to ensure that Linden Grove is recognized as a demonstrated leader in autism-related education for Greater Cincinnati. We have a strong desire and are dedicated to improving outcomes for our new students and families. When we see there is a way to advance our programs so that our students and staff can achieve greater success, we work hard at finding way to make it happen. Here are the highlights of our 2013-14 school year!

Highest EnrollmentLinden Grove’s enrollment continues to grow. Last year our enrollment was 47 and this year we have climbed to 57 students. Among our student population, we welcomed 12 new families to our LGS community.

More SpaceSt. Saviour continues to be a community partner. Father Tim Bunch, along with his staff and parish remain strong supporters of our school. They have opened up the entire second floor to LGS, allowing us to enroll more students. St. Saviour’s generosity and support of our school has made it possible for us to serve more students in need.

Lego EducationThe focus of education and the role of educators are changing. Twenty-first century learning is about providing children with opportunities to experiment with their surroundings as a form of problem solving. This year LGS is introducing three Lego Education programs – WeDo, Simple Machines, and Story Starter. Two of these programs tap into STEM education, combining Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and allow students to engage these subjects authentically. The third, Story Starter, enhances written communication. • WeDo Robotics is a powerful robotics system where students build and program

their own robots to write stories, solve problems, and create innovative projects.• Simple Machines solution enables students to build, design, and test simple

and powered machines. Through hands-on activities, they achieve an in-depth understanding of both the mechanical and structural principles built into everyday machines and structures.

• StoryStarter teaches students the basic structures of a well-composed story, making it a great tool for analyzing existing stories or discussing specific current topics.

Linden Grove Signature Event raises the bar! The 2013 Signature Event honored our children’s “Unsung Heroes” and raised the bar for future events. A heartfelt video recognized several students’ “Unsung Heroes” and insured that there wasn’t a dry eye in the place! These extraordinary individuals were honored for their dedication, unconditional love, inspiration, and commitment to several LGS students. The success of LGS’s Signature Event was due to the countless hours of preparation and support from families, friends, alumni, board members, sponsors, and staff. For the first time, LGS raised over $50,000 and sold out of every raffle ticket. Two hundred and sixty participants enjoyed a fun fill evening and contributed to the night’s success. We want to thank our event sponsors: Fifth Third Bank, Aaron Pitman of API Domain Investments, Donald Wright of Assure Rx Health, and The Harris Group, (a Lincoln Electric Company). Their collective support was instrumental in our success. In addition, several high school volunteers and special guests Brittany Reid (Miss Teen Ohio 2013) and Kristin Smith (Miss Ohio 2013) along with Channel 5 reporter Andrew Setters (LG parent and evening emcee) made the night special for all. Again, thank you to everyone who contributed and we look forward to another successful event in 2014! LGS has chosen a new venue for its 2014 Signature Event. The Manor House in Mason, Ohio, is an elegant estate situated on seven acres boasting beautiful “plantation style” architecture.

New playground equipment needed for LGS It is time for an upgrade. Linden Grove students have been playing on the same playground set for 13 years which was made possible through a $14,000 donation from the Jergen’s foundation. At the time, our enrollment was 20 students. Now, with a student population of 57 and growing (along with many years of wear and tear), our playground structure has become outdated and can no longer meet the recreational needs of our students. As we all know, exercise and learning

through play are central aspects of child development. Recess is an integral component of our students’ daily schedule. After reviewing plans from three reputable companies we have chosen to work with Recreations Outlet. We are looking for support to fund this necessary $45,000 project. Please contact Linda Hart, Principal of Administration if you are interested in being a donor for this special project.
