Specialized learning for the whole child

What a difference a year makes We cannot help but look back at all that has transpired since last school year. As we reflect on our many accomplishments and successes, we are in awe of how much we have grown both as a school and a community. There is a lot of excitement ahead of us as we welcome 46 students and their families, along with new teachers, new books and technology, new friendships and new skills to master. We look forward to sharing in these exciting times; however, let’s take a moment to reflect on our achievements from last school year which will impact our future success. Recap of the 2010-11 school year: • Wehavebeenworkinghardonsecuringfundingto support our “BringIT” program (Bring Integrated Technology) to Linden Grove. On behalf of many private foundations, auxiliary, and a federal stimulus program, LGS has been awarded more than $56,000. These funds have allowed us to purchase six SMART Boards, 10 iPad2s, six student desktops, a new server and technology consultation. The new equipment provides our students with a stimulating learning environment, one in which the focus on technology spans the entire curriculum. This in turn maximizes individual potential and ensures that students of all ability levels are well equipped to meet the challenges of education, work and life. • LGSandTheChildren’sHomeofCincinnatihavefulfilledastrategicgoalbypartnering to provide a comprehensive education and life skills program for high school studentsdiagnosedwithanAutismSpectrumDisorder.Dubbed“TheChildren’sHomeHighSchool,”wecurrentlyhave10studentsenrolledforthe2011-2012schoolyear. Providing a high school option for Linden Grove students is something that we have worked strategically toward, and we are extremely excited with the results. Linden Grove will provide both administrative and programmatic consultation throughout the year for the high school program. See photo of new school on page 7. •Themulti-ageteamshaveproventobeahugesuccessinaccommodatingourstudents in their social, emotional, behavioral and academic needs. The groupings consist of similar developmental grade levels with similar-aged peers. An average academic class ranges from three to six students per teacher, allowing our staff to collaborate in professional teams to provide a specialized and developmentally appropriate curriculum. This year the teams were renamed: Primary K-2, Lower Elementary 2-4, Upper Elementary 4-6, Middle school 6-8. • OurnewProfessionalOpenHouseformatprovidedneededexposureforLindenGrove in the professional community, resulting in an all time high enrollment and referrals. Linden Grove is becoming well known and recognized in the autism, medical and educational communities within the Tri-State. We are excited to be part of Linden Grove’s growth and development. Student creates art for shirtLinden Grove student and 2011 graduate, Eric VandenOever, drew a wonderful picture featuring his friends from Linden Grove.Hecapturedthepersonalitiesofhisfriendshuddledaround a linden tree at Linden Grove playing and having fun. The image was then screen-printed onto shirts and made available to friends and families as a fundraiser for Linden Grove. It is evident that Eric has a gift, and we are thankful that he shared it with us. It’s certainly enjoyable to see students walk down the hall wearing Eric’s shirt!

Linden Grove’s very own all star takes the field!Max Kordenbrock, a 2011 Linden Grove graduate, was one of 18 students to be nominated to the Autism All Stars for 2011. As part of his nomination, Max attended a special awards dinner where he received a trophy and gave a short thank-you speech. The following week, the city’s Autism All Stars were treated to a Cincinnati Reds game. Max and his fellow All Stars were introduced on the field by the Reds announcer and were pictured on the jumbo video screen. Way to go Max!

2011 Silent Auction a great success The 2011 Linden Grove Silent Auction marked several firsts,andprimaryamongthemwasachangeinthehostvenue.Thisyear’seventwasheldatTheFairfieldBanquetandConventionCenteratTori’sStation,aspaciousandcomfortable environment in which attendees bid on many wonderful items donated by local businesses and individuals. Guests were treated to a sit down dinner accompanied by live entertainment from Lou from Peru and danced the night away withamusicperformancebyChaselounge.

Tyler Nicholas (Linden Grove class of 2010) was our student ambassador.HespokeabouttheeducationhereceivedwhileatLinden Grove, and thanked his teachers for helping him. Tyler earnedastandingovationwhenhesangTheBeatles“HardDays Night” with his brothers backing him. John Schiff, the night’s guest of honor gave a heartwarming speechaswell,praisingLindenGroveforhissonC.J.’ssuccess.Both Tyler and John’s words were moving, and reminded everyone that the education Linden Grove provides is vital. Rusty Ball 2011 Entry and drawing tickets available from LGSGet on the ball and purchase your tickets for the fourth annual Rusty Ball. Linden Grove has a limited number of tickets available and in order for you to secure your ticket, please purchase them soon. Last year the tickets sold out very quickly. Linden Grove has 50 Rusty Ball raffle tickets. Each ticket is $5 and it gets you into the drawing for $1000. There will be six drawings during the course of the evening at the Rusty Ball. Exploring the reef artisticallyIn art class this fall, students began exploring the great barrier reefs, discussing color, line and movement. Warm and cool colors were stressed, identifying the contrast of colors between the ocean water and the vibrant images of the “rain forests of the sea.” Teams 6-8 worked on sea life backgrounds, focusing on the size and proportion of creatures using varying sizes to push some characters further in the background. Students also learned a watercolor manipulation technique. Blowing large pools of bright water colors from the bottom of the page upward, the students created beautiful branch-like sections of coral reef.
