Driver hurt in Collendina crash

Teens head for fun in sun

A FIFTY-year-old Grove woman was been taken to Geelong Hospital with minor chest injuries after her car hit a power pole last week.

Leading Senior Constable Rodger Lawry said the woman had left her home in Collendina and was driving east on Loch Ard Drive when she collided with a power pole.

“There is a slight bend before Bonnyvale Road and she said she’s veered off and smashed into the power pole,” he said.

Police believed the impact of the crash had forced the car 20 metres backwards

to rest on a nature strip although a nearby witness says the car hit the pole then slowly rolled backwards.

Snr Constable Lawry said SES was able to remove the women despite thoughts that she was trapped in the vehicle.

“A local gentlemen nearby heard the crash and called 000. When the Ambos’ and SES arrived she was removed straight away and taken to Geelong Hospital,” he said.

Police are encouraging any witnesses to contact the Ocean Grove Police Station on 5256 2698.The scene of the crash in Loch Ard Drive.

FORTY-six teenagers accompanied by seven adults took off to Moreton Bay in Queensland for five days earlier this month. The trip is a regular event organised and supervised by Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre drop in, youth workers and volunteer police officers. The centre holds a supervised drop in for 12-17 year olds every Friday night from 6pm to 9pm during school term.

Banking on local Relay for Life

THE upcoming Bellarine Relay for Life has had a major boost with ANZ Ocean Grove announced as the major sponsor.

Branch Manager Liz Gravolin said they were excited to be sponsoring the event and would also be entering a team.

“The Relay for Life is a fantastic opportunity to raise money for cancer research and to support the community and give back any way we can,” she said. “Many of our branch staff has had family and friends with cancer so we are passionate about this cause.”

Liz said as the major sponsor they would be donating money to assist in the running cost of the event and as a team will also be striving to raise as much money as possible.

“Our team goal is to have as much fun as possible on the day. Kevin the ATM will join our team, which will be fun,” she said. “We’re planning on raising money through various channels and are hoping some of our generous customers will get behind us and donate to our team branch before the event.”

24 hours to fit it inOCEAN View Health Club has recently undergone renovations and in an exciting new venture will now be open 24 hours.

For 15 years the Rapa’s have run the gym as a family owned business and Mark said that they’ve always strived to be inclusive and community friendly.

“I’ve worked in lots of gyms and also owned gyms in Melbourne. The good thing about this gym is that it’s always maintained its community feel,” he said.

“It’s a very welcoming and warm gym. The staff ’s good, the members are great and I think it would be very hard for someone to feel intimidated here.”

The family of five consisting of Mark and wife Louise, their children Madison, 21, Jess, 18, and Darcy, 15, have always been heavily involved within the Ocean Grove community.

“We’ve been here for 15 years and my kids have always played sports on the Bellarine. My son plays footy, basketball and all of my kids played soccer through the Surfside Soccer Club,” Louise said.

“Madi did calisthenics, our kids went to Star of the Sea, Mark was the President of the Soccer Club for five years and at one stage

everyone in our family was playing soccer.”

Mark said they’d been toying with the idea of a 24 hour gym for 12 months and after initial discussions with franchises decided to go out on their own.

“I’ve been in the industry for 35 years and I’ve found if you don’t progress you get left behind. I had to progress and do basically what everyone else is doing before someone did it for me,” he said. “I sourced all the information that I needed and got Barwon Security on board to help me with our security set up. ”

Mark said the security set up is elaborate with

camera motion senses, panic buttons and personal panic buttons.

“It’s very, very safe and since we’ve mentioned we are going 24 hours the response has been nothing short of unbelievable. Our membership has almost doubled,” he said. “The feeling I was getting from the public was that there wasn’t enough time in the day for them to go to the gym and I had to keep up with what was happening in the industry.”Mark said it addresses the issue particularly for those who work in Melbourne, no longer having to rush home to try and make the gym.

LOCAL Andrew Hopper is taking part in the Ride to Conquer Cancer to raise money in memory of his late mother, Sharyn.

“My mum passed away after a battle with cancer in September 2005. My team and I are riding to raise money for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre,” said Mr Hopper.

“My mum was a terrific person with a heart of gold, and I want to help anyone else who is going through what she went through and hopefully they have a better outcome.”

Ride to Conquer Cancer is happening Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 October, covering 200km of

Victorian countryside.Funds raised will go

towards cancer research, treatment and care.

Peter Mac treats more cancer patients each year than any other hospital in the country.

“I am extremely grateful for the people who have helped me reach my personal target of raising $3,500 and I will keep trying to raise more right up until the day of the ride,” continued Mr Hopper.

“As a team we have raised nearly $30,000, which is a great effort by all.”

“Funds from the bike ride go towards the Peter MacCallum Cancer

Centre, which is the only public hospital in Australia solely dedicated to cancer.”

“My mum was an amazing woman and I hope to one day live in a cancer free world.”

Andrew Hopper has lived in the Geelong and Bellarine area his entire life and is the owner of a Hotondo Homes franchise in Ocean Grove.

have a lot of men,” she said. “This is aimed at them and letting them know they can ride with us. We don’t ride too fast and the ride we do is about 30km at a good pace so it’s nice and easy.”Denise said cycling was a great way to stay fit and meet new people.Denise said the group takes off every Wednesday morning at 6.30am outside of Hendry’s and is encouraging riders of any skill level to come along.

PLANS are well underway to give the Rustys a fi tting send off for the Global Battle of the Bands competition. The local teen band which won the Australasian title for Best Band will now

represent the continent in London on April 27. The farewell event will be held at Ocean Grove Park on Saturday April 10 at 2pm. It has been organised by the Ocean Grove Arts Network and the show will also feature fellow teen bands Sambrose Automobile from Ocean Grove and The Houses from Geelong. Entry is free but the audience will have the chance to make a gold coin donation to help fund the trip to England. As minors the three-piece band will have to be accompanied by adults.

Urgent road repairs neededIn Parliament recently I raised the issue of potholes, dangerous road surfaces and crumbling road edges on roads in the Bellarine. Many of you have spoken to me about the disgraceful state of our roads, in particular sections of the Bellarine Highway and the Portarlington Road. These are our two major arterial roads that carry increasingly heavy traffic, which will only get worse as increasing numbers of holiday-makers and tourists visit the Bellarine over the summer months. The situation is becoming increasingly serious with drivers and vehicles at risk and cuts to the VicRoads’ road surfacing budget resulting in repair and maintenance work being neglected or delayed. The potential for accidents is also increased on these busy roads because of the higher speed limits. As a community we rely on safe, well maintained roads. It is crucial that repair work is done urgently on the Bellarine Highway and the

Portarlington Road, and on other important roads across the Bellarine

Fire services levyYou may have seen that I’ve been talking about this issue which has been concerning a lot of residents. There is general support for the change from the Levy on insurance premiums to a property-based charge through Council rates to ensure all property owners contribute to our fire services. However, it is essential that the abolition of the FSL from insurance policies is reflected in reduced premiums.

Marine research jobs to be halvedIt has been confirmed that 15 of the 30 research positions at the Department of Primary Industry’s Queenscliff Centre, are to be cut.As many of you will know, I raised the issue in Parliament and it has had considerable media interest but the situation continues to be very

concerning. There is no doubt these cuts will drastically undermine the work of the centre and have a huge impact on our local and state-wide fishing industry and marine environmentThe achievements at the centre have been significant, including the development of a new shellfish hatchery to produce a reliable high quality spat that was vital in saving our mussel industry. The cuts threaten this type of innovative, world class research and development work for the future.I will continue to work with the local community, Council and environment groups to push the Government to listen to the concerns of all those who care for the future of the marine environment and our fishing industry. As always, please don’t hesitate to contact my office if there are any issues I may be able to assist you with.

grove elections

Time to make your mind upBY the end of next week Ocean Grove, as part of the Beangala Ward, will have gone to the polls as part of the City of Greater Geelong election of councillors.

We will also have had the chance to vote for our first directly elected Geelong mayor.

This time around we have the chance to choose from four ward candidates - three new as well as sitting councillor Jan Farrell.

Whoever is selected it will be important to choose someone who will continue the battle for better

infrastructure – in particular sports and arts facilities in Ocean Grove.

Jan Farrell has enabled the town to realise the dream of its own swimming pool and an integrated childcare centre.

The battle to secure final funding for a sports pavilion at Shell Road Reserve continues.

Also standing is John Fendyk, president of the Community Association and CEO of Bellarine Community Health. John and his family are deeply embedded in the town,

involving themselves in all areas of town life.

Also standing will be Warren Smith and Carlo Missio.

The mayor’s role will be important and we have – with the exception of one mysterious candidate called John Smith – an excellent group of genuine candidates to choose from.

Ocean Grove’s own Stephanie Asher is a strong candidate for the role with a record of achievement in commerce and the community.

Graeme Robin, a travel

writer, also hails from the town and stands with a pledge to cut rates and bureaucracy.

According to the polls, semi-resident Keith Fagg is currently the favourite to win office. Keith stands as a listener with passion for the city and region. As well as owning the Wallington Mitre 10 as part of the Faggs group, Keith is regular runner with the Ocean Grove Harriers, and knows the area well. His family has been in business in the Geelong area for more than 150 years.

Also standing is Geelong

Chamber of Commerce Executive Officer Bernadette Uzelac. Among her key issues is the “protection of our fragile coastal environment”.

She says she will work“To protect it. I will work with the state government to develop more coastal reserves, where possible.”

Other mayoral candidates are Sue Bull, Ron Watt, Frank Rozpara, John Mitchell and John Smith.

Residents should have received ballot packs by now. They must be returned by October 26.

Who is the fittest for office...

OCEAN Grove-based Geelong Mayoral candidate Stephanie Asher is maintaining her strict fitness levels despite her busy schedule. The busy mother-of-three who works full-time as a Public Relations consultant said she had been in preparation for the upcoming summer fun runs and is putting in up to 12km a day.

Alerted to the fact that the Voice may be favouring mayoral candidates who look after their bodies - healthy body healthy mind - the mysterious John Smith, the ninth candidate in the race to become Geelong’s first directly elected mayor, suprised seasoned marathoner Keith Fagg for the Harriers run on Saturday morning.

Millie Pianta, 89, retiredI’ve lived here since 1974, I came down from up in the Mallee. I was a farmer, we grew wheat and kept sheep and wool. I was retired by the time I moved here but I taught in some of the schools in Geelong, I taught the kids that couldn’t read and write. I was a primary teacher and they didn’t have anyone to teach them the alphabet so they could learn how to read. You would be surprised some of the kids in these high schools who’ve been at school for seven years and don’t know how to read the alphabet or how to write. That was in Geelong, no child I ever taught left without knowing how to read and write. I love it here, when I came here it was a quiet sea side town and you knew everybody. I lived on an acre when I first got here and looked after it for 15 years after my husband died and thought this is stupid it’s going to kill me so then I found this house.

Bernadette Bell, full-time stay-at-home-mumI’ve been in Ocean Grove 11 years now but my husband was born and bred here. He’d had been trying to tell me to come down here for ages but I thought it was too far away. Now I’m here I could never leave. I love the community, the beach and schools. We just love it, it’s such a nice friendly town. I walk down the beach everyday with our dogs, I love horse riding too but I don’t get to ride them as much anymore. I also love netball so when Ben gets a bit older I’ll get back into that. I love the Twilight Saga and also Hunger Games, I’m really into it, I just want to go out and get the final book now. I’ve got no hidden talents just lots of children (laughing). We just got back from holidays in Fiji, we love to travel. We appreciate Ocean Grove even more when we come home.

Lorna McDonald, 81, retiredWe’ve been living in Ocean Grove now for five years. Originally we’re from Ballarat and moved to Barwon Heads first until we decided to downsize to our home here. It’s lovely in Ocean Grove, it’s handy for everything. It’s flat and easy to walk. We had a big house in Barwon Heads and a big garden which got too much. A lot of older people tend to move to Ocean Grove and we found this place and thought it was perfect. My son reads the Voice and he lives in Stockholm Sweden as he married a Swedish girl. He is coming over at the end of November and I’m going to take the Voice home and give it to him and he will take his photo with it in Sweden. He has been here before with his family. I’ve got two boys in Melbourne. They’re married with families and I also have a daughter in Barwon Heads.

Steve Duan, 49, handyman We’ve lived in Ocean Grove for about 13 years now. Originally we’re from Werribee. We used to holiday around this area and it’s a beautiful place. It’s a very family-orientated town and that’s what I like the most. We love the beach, the surf, and the cricket club and the tennis courts are just up the road. So is the park. I’ve got two boys who are 21 and 18. One is doing his VCEs and the other one is at Melbourne University. I can’t see us ever moving from here, it’s probably getting a little too big for its boots now though. I moved here because it was a little country place and it’s probably doubled over the past 13 years. It’s still nice, there are nice people in Ocean Grove. I’m 50 in December and I can still chuck a handstand on a skateboard, I’m a bit old school when I skate I’m more into 360’s and things like that.

George Lamont, 64 importerI’ve lived in Ocean Grove for five years now. I was living in Templestow and I came here to look after my sick mother. I love the beach the most about living here. I follow horse racing. I’ve got race horses and won a few good races at Flemington over the years. I run an import business and I travel overseas every month. I have lots of friends overseas and I think that every county is good in one way or another. I love Asia - China, Indonesia and Vietnam. I don’t eat out much in Ocean Grove as I’m babysitting my mum. I’m chief cook and bottle washer while I’m here. I’ll move to Asia eventually, maybe Sumatra. I love surfing at the beach with my kids. It’s a great beach, one of the best beaches around. I don’t like the dogs though, I find it very unhygienic, especially when people don’t clean up after the mess.

A chance to off-load

A CHANCE to off-load is what the Ocean Grove Mood Support Group hoped to offer the community during Mental Health Week.

Run by the Ocean Grove Neighborhood Centre co-facilitator Mike Griffiths said the activities planned during October 7-13 were about giving people the chance to be understood.

“Our group is here just to off-load, you don’t come here to try and be healed or try to be fixed in any way,” he said.

“It’s an anchor for people who struggle with mental problems on the Bellarine. It’s set up so people can just get it off their chest and get some sort of guidance about what to do next.”

Fellow facilitator Kris Haywood said support groups are an essential part of the recovery process and MHW was a good opportunity for people to come and see what the group is about.

“Everyone’s got some kind of mental illness or

another and you can come here and talk about issues that affect you and there’s no judgment, everyone’s welcome,” she said.

“We offer a referral service. If we can’t help we point people in the right direction. We do

various activities that are all part of refocusing and that happens through the support group.”

Kevin Williamson has been coming to the Mood Support Group since it began and said it provides him an outlet to discuss

issues with people who are able to relate.

“It’s been able to talk with people who have been through the same experiences, understand what you’re talking about when it comes to depression and not being

able to do things,” he said.“It’s a lot easier to talk

about those things with the group then friends and family who feel a type of sympathy and empathy but they still don’t quite understand what you’ve got to go through.”

Kev Williamson, Kris Haywood, Mike Griffiths and Di Pinnow (with Lucy).

Summer markets up and runningTHE Rotary Club of Ocean Grove’s summer market season started again last this month with just over 430 people passing through the gates of Kingston Park.

With 35 stalls there was an excellent range of foods, drinks, books, fresh produce, handcrafts, wood work, jewellery and clothes, as well as a huge range of plants and herbs.

Market organiser James Ricchini was very happy with the turnout saying, “It was great to get such a good crowd on a day when the weather was not that kind.

“Visitors and stall holders all coped really well too with the changeover to

daylight savings.” As this was the first

market of the year donations raised from Sunday’s market went to the Rotary International projects funds. These funds are used for a range of aid projects including the purchase of new Shelter Boxes.

Future outdoor summer

markets will be held on the first Sunday of each month through to April when the indoor markets will resume.

Visit Rotary’s website to see who and when the various community groups are scheduled as recipients.

“This is a fantastic day for Ocean Grove families

“Providing children with the best healthcare and education at a young age has a lasting impact on their development, ability and willingness to learn.”

Local Councillor Jan Farrell said that the $9.5 million project in conjunction with Lyons Construction Geelong was expected to be completed

by early 2014 in time for the start of the kinder year.

“I’m very excited. This is a wonderful centre and it will make a huge difference to the families on the Bellarine. It’s disappointing though that our local community wasn’t involved in today’s event,” she said. “Fingers crossed that the next time a state Minister visits Ocean Grove it’s the Sports Minister with that cheque for the sporting club rooms that we’re all waiting for.”

Pink roar

Survivor behind support groupAFTER overcoming breast cancer Julie Rodgers has formed a support group for Ocean Grove/Barwon Heads women, writes Jessica Grace.

The local Ocean Grover said the group aims to provide invaluable support for those touched by breast cancer and their families.

“I have always been vigilant and had routine mammograms every two years but in April last year my mammogram showed two abnormal lumps in my right breast,” she said.

“I was told one was fine and the other was cancerous and needed to be removed. I was very lucky that my cancer had been detected early and had not spread to my lymph

nodes.”Julie said she had to undergo

six weeks of radiation at the Andrew Love Centre to ensure the cancer wouldn’t spread.

“I’m so thankful I didn’t have to endure chemo but five days each week of radiation treatment left me very tired, drained and in a lot of pain,” she said.

“It took months to recover physically and emotionally and I now take medication daily to hopefully improve my chances of the cancer not coming back.”

Julie only heard about support groups within the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) whilst on holidays in Bendigo.

“The group of ladies there were amazing, a very loving caring group. They put me in touch with the BCNA head office and they found a small group in Ocean Grove for me,” she said.

“There are three of us and we’ve now decided to meet

once a month in an informal atmosphere to give each other the support, friendship and encouragement that we need.”

Julie said the unwavering support of Liam her 22-year-old son was vital but the opportunity to discuss

the ordeal amongst other cancer patients and survivors would’ve helped.

“I was unaware of any support groups around here when I was diagnosed 18 months ago and desperately could have done with the support,” she said.

“It would’ve been great to speak to another woman going through it. You can’t understand not only the physical pain but the huge emotional journey that comes with it.”

MORE than 230 bikers roared into Ocean Grove one Sunday earlier this month.

The sight of patched riders alongside ladies on pink Vespas added even more interest.

The event was the Pink Ribbon Ride - a 180km loop from Mercer Street, Geelong, around the Bellarine and back to Johnstone Park. The event was put together by Geelong Ulysses Club in association with Peter Stevens Motor Cycles Geelong as a fundraiser for the Andrew Love Cancer Centre

David O’Brien, Branch Manager of Peter Stevens Motor Cycles was

delighted with the event and that it had raised $3,279 for the cause.

“It was fantastic. Home Hardware were fantastic and went above and beyond with homemade cakes. They did a great job down there.

“The reason this and the toy run are so successful is that it’s a destination ride.

“And more importantly its about 17 women in different stages of treatment who got to chill for a couple of hours and take in 13th Beach, Ocean Grove and Portarlington foreshore – and raise much needed funds for the Andrew Love Cancer Centre.”Local riders Carry Varley, John Dickson and Brian Gellion.

More than 230 bikers came to town as park of the Pink Ribbon Ride. Home Hardware laid on a sausage sizzle and homemade cakes for the visitors.

WORLD class jazz is coming to Ocean Grove. The second week of November is Piping Hot Chicken Shop’s inaugural Jazz Week featuring three different acts, with three different types of Jazz.

On Friday November 9, Chook shop regulars The Scion Pirates will be bringing their Reggae / Ethiopian Jazz fusion riddums back to town. Every show is unique, every show will get you dancing.

On Saturday November 10, Ocean Grove’s own Hammond, saxophone and bass playing Tim Neal has assembled a one-off stellar line up (Magnealsium) to play a selection of improvised music and the blues, with old friends Carl Pannuzzo, Steve Magnusson and Bere. Be sure not to miss this opportunity to hear musicians of an exceptional international standard, rarely heard in Australia.

Guitarist and composer

Stephen Magnusson is a musician at the height of his powers. From the precocious virtuoso who dazzled the music world when he crashed onto the scene, to a musician so mature, complete and respected that when people talk of an “Australian sound” of instrumental music, it is Magnusson’s influence – his tone, his

touch, his compositional watermark and his deep sensitivity – that they hear.

Argentinian drummer Sergio Beresovsky is a startling player, an irresistible force, who ignites the music with crackling invention and uninhibited creativity.

“Bere” belongs to a rich musical movement that has been happening

around the world for decades. He studied Afro Brasilian music at Salvador Bahia, Brasil.

Carl Pannuzzo is an auto-didactic multi-hatted musician, composer and teacher, renowned for his original bent on creativity and pushing the envelope of artistic conventions but with respect to traditions.

Carl has performed

with greats such as Jimmy Smith, Patti LaBelle, Bob Sedergreen, Broderick Smith and many others plus composed soundtrack for theatre makers, Punctum Inc., English playwright Jane Bodie and more.

Finally on Friday November 16, Hetty Kate and The Irwell Street String Band will bring their string band to town. Featuring the delightfully vintage voiced Hetty Kate and master guitar (and ukulele) of Sam Lemann, you can expect an effervescent take on classics and curios from the well worn pages of Tinseltown, bright lane-ways of Mexico and melancholia of wartime Britain - all delivered with enchantment, laughs and a foot-tapping swing.

They will be joined by the shuffling rhythm guitar of Andy Baylor, and surefooted swing of Leigh Barker on bass.

Tix for the three nights, including $15 drink voucher $40.

Stephen Magnusson.

Local artist (and the Voice) go global

INDIGENOUS art from Ocean Grove is now proudly adorning a wall in Reggio Calabria in Italy. Some four years ago I had a visit from my cousin Assunta. Enamoured with indigenous art, I took the time to show Assunta around. Our itinerary at the time included a visit to the National Arts Museum in Melbourne where we took in the permanent Indigenous art exhibition. Assunta was so appreciative of this wonderful traditional treasure that when the opportunity came for me and my daughter Savannah to travel to Italy, I knew I had to bring a piece of Australia to her. That is when I remembered Helen Brotherton and her wonderful artwork. How cool to deliver an authentic piece of indigenous art from a local artist and friend and to take it to a very

admiring relative in Italy.Helen allowed me to purchase this beautiful piece and provided me with the story behind it: Entitled, Reconciliation of one People, the story goes like this. Long time ago in the dreaming, when the world was new, the Aboriginal clan moved from place to place gathering food in peace and harmony with all clans, until one day a gathering of unknown people arrived on their shores. It took a long time for the Aboriginal clans to gain trust and share their dream time stories with these people.

They moved in everlasting circles around their camp fires, hands stretched out in reconciliation to meet their fellow man. Every where the clans went, so did their beloved animals. We arrived in Rome in June of this year and travelled south to Reggio Calabria where we met with family and it was lovely to see my cousin Assunta. The painting now hangs with pride in prime position amongst her favourite pieces.

Brod calls in sick but Doc to rescue with Tabasco

Vote for Murlocs

A CROOK Broderick Smith meant the promise of an awesome trio was reduced to Doc White and Tabasco Tom at the Chicken Shop on Saturday night. But the US meets Australia blues didn’t disappoint, veering from country blues of Alabama to the New Orleans sounds - featuring Doc’s mandolin.

LOCAL Aaron Hapgood received a standing ovation from Ocean Grove Rotarians after he delivered an inspiring speech.

Peter Hawthorn approached the 20-year-old about sharing his heart transplant experience and was blown away by his honesty.

“For 20 minutes he spoke to 60 of us at the Bowling Club and it was wonderful. He was coming and going and it was raw, he spoke about going out, drinking, being young and his challenges,” he said.

“He’s been asked to talk again to other groups and he’ll have to shorten the speech but not refine it because that’s the boy he is. That’s the way he should speak

and he’s spoken very well on his life.”

Peter said it exceeded his own expectations and as a passionate supporter and advocate of the Australian Organ Donor Register hoped it would garner his cause.

“I want to make Ocean Grove the organ donor capital of Australia and to achieve that all we need to do is have all of Ocean Grove’s residents commit to be registered,” he said.

“I walked around the Industrial Estate for five hours last week and handed out over 200 forms. The great thing was that I well received by nearly all of the businesses.”

Aaron Hapgood gave an inspiring speech to Rotary.

business news

Just taken overTRACEY Novak is the new owner of Coastal Cutz Hairdressing.

Tracey has been a hairdresser for over 26 years and was apprentice trained when she was 16. Also new to the team is Veronica Raggett or Roni as she is better known. Roni did her apprenticeship in Drysdale and has been working in Melbourne in Lygon Street for the last few months.

She is a great all-rounder with strong cut, colour and styling skills

For the last 10 years Tracey has been involved in all aspects of the hair industry. She has written and published two hair trade publications that are

currently being sold in the USA and Australia. She has also worked as the Editor for the NZ Hairdressers Journal while selling advertising to its sister publication the Australian Hairdressers Journal.

Tracey has been involved in many hair product launches with above the line advertising and creative agencies as well as hair product sponsorships for TV Week Logies and AFI Awards.

She is a qualified colour technician and has worked with many different colour brands and is familiar with all brands.

“Most recently I have been working as the internal sales team leader at

Just Magazines in Geelong with Ash Hunter – all the time keeping up with my passion for hair on the weekends,” said Tracey. “I had a great time working for Just and would have continued on with them if the salon didn’t come up for sale. But it did and I made the decision to buy it and get back to where my passion has always been – hairdressing.”

Tracey has lived in Clifton Springs for the last 15 years, but has always enjoyed Ocean Grove for its energy and community spirit. Currently the salon is servicing a combination of people from the Bellarine, Geelong and surrounding areas and Melbourne. Tracey Novak and Veronica Raggett.

Local architects setting the barLOCAL Ocean Grove architects, Leon Eyck and Briony Darcy have received one of three commendations in a national interior design competition.

The competition to design a ‘high end’ spirit bar was run in collaboration with Emerging Architects and Graduate Network (EmAGN) along with the sponsors Ketel One. Young architects were invited to

design and construct a bar to serve the country’s most prominent architects at the National Architecture Awards, to be held in Perth on November 1.

The husband and wife team and owners of DE atelier Architects, Leon and Briony drew their inspiration from the unicorns on the family seal of the Ketel One bottle. The mythical creature

represents courage and fighting spirit and it is from these characteristics that they named the bar module, MOED.

The architect’s imagination was fuelled by the MOEDs mustering as a herd, a light horn acting as a beacon framing the bar and drawings the patrons to it.

Assembly for the MOED was based on the same technique as the children’s

balsa wood dinosaur skeletons. MOED was designed to be delivered on site in a flat pack, be simple to erect, disassemble and enable multiple configurations.

Zero waste was a key concept to the architects with the surplus material from the flat pack innovatively transformed into standing bar tables to complement the bar.Leon Eyck and Briony Darcy.

DINING OUT

Bolzano - Ocean Grove’s premier family-friendly restaurant is nearly four years old.

As we move into another summer on the coast it’s a good time to reflect on the past year.

It has been an exceptionally long and cold winter, we want to thank the local population for continuing to keep us busy despite the weather and economic gloom.

Our rustic thin crust pizza is gaining in poularity, it is easy to understand why.

We spend a bit more on only the top end smallgoods and cheeses for our pizza, proper stretched curd white mozzarella, hand made pizza sauce, imported Italian pizza flour, the best Sardinian white anchovies, fantastic olives and redwine salami.

Our dough is hand kneaded daily and we have just bought a new pizza oven. All this makes for some pretty damn good pizza, check it out.

Pick up or home delivery. Our pizza is also the cheapest in town, $25 for 2 large pickup or $30 delivered to

Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and Wallington only.

All you can eat pizza and pasta in the restaurant Mondays and Tuesdays, $23 for adults and $15 for kids under 12, great value and it runs all year except for January and Easter.

Bolzano Restaurant remains the best affordable fine dining in the area, our food speaks for itself.

Great steaks, game, poultry, seafood, sharing platters and all things Mediterranean.

We would also like to welcome our new sous chef Dustin Fox.

He brings a wealth of experience to the kitchen team. He has worked in several award winning and highly regarded restaurants over the years.

Drop in and take a look at one of his fantastic new desserts.

Great value end of year function packages available too. Book before the end of November and receive a 10% discount off your bill for parties of 20 or more.

We hope to see you soon.

environment

THIS week we are looking at Kingfishers, thanks to a suggestion from Neil Hickman, bird photographer and member of the Bellarine Birdlife Group. Neil told me that he had seen Sacred Kingfishers flying around Blue Waters Lake in Ocean Grove. I have walked around Blue Waters Lake countless times over the years and never once seen anything resembling a Sacred Kingfisher, so secretly in the depths of my bird watching mind I doubted Neil’s observation (sorry Neil).

Last week I was walking around the Blue Waters Lake, minding my own business, actually looking for the nests of the wonderful Reed Warblers. A flash of green flew past me and landed in a nearby gum tree. I couldn’t believe my eyes, it was the fabled and elusive Sacred Kingfisher!

Not only had it flown past me, it kindly landed near me and allowed a quick photo before disappearing into a thick expanse of willow trees….hopefully to return again soon.

While I am on the subject

of Blue Waters Lake, it is a wonderful place to go for a walk at the moment with many Reed Warblers, Spoonbills, Parrots, Wagtails, Wattlebirds Waterfowl, and ducklings.

There are ten species of Kingfishers in Australia, the largest of which is the Laughing Kookaburra, which is often seen (and heard) around Ocean Grove, Drysdale and Wallington. I have also seen a pair of Red Backed Kingfishers that briefly inhabited the Nature

Reserve a few years ago. In North Queensland I was lucky enough to see Azure Kingfishers, Forest Kingfishers, and Blue Winged Kookaburras. However, I think that seeing a Sacred Kingfisher in Ocean Grove has been the highlight of my Kingfisher ‘big year’ year so far.

Sacred Kingfishers are 19–23 cm long. They have a green turquoise back, turquoise blue rump and tail, buff-white underparts and a cream neck ring.

There is a black eye stripe that reaches from the eye to the neck. Both sexes are similar, although the female is generally lighter with duller upper parts.

The Sacred Kingfisher is seen throughout the coastal regions of Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand and some Pacific islands. It is found in coastal woodlands, mangroves and paperbark forests. In Australia, Sacred Kingfishers spend winter north of their usual range and fly back south in the spring for the breeding

season.Sacred Kingfishers eat

insects, small crustaceans, fish, mice and reptiles.

They sit on low tree branches on the lookout for prey.

The Sacred Kingfisher nest is dug in the bank of a riverbed, termite mound or in a hollow tree hole and has been seen sometimes to be located only 20cms from the ground.

There is exciting news that Phyllis’s Tawny Frogmouth (from the article a few weeks’ ago) did find a mate and is now sitting on a nest! I can’t wait for the Tawny Frogmouth “chick” photo opportunities that will now present themselves (if only the constant cloud cover would disappear).

The next meeting of the local bird group, Bellarine Birdlife, will be held on Monday November 5 at 7.30pm, at the Ocean Grove Neighbourhood House. If you are interested in joining this group or partaking in the activities that are organised, please ring Miles Charlesworth on 0438531782.

I will never doubt you again Neil Hickman.

OCEAN Grove Badminton Club’s Jacob Schueler is a fast becoming a star on the badminton court.

Earlier this month, the 14-year-old had the honour of being picked to play for Victoria at the Australian Under 15 Badminton Championships in Caloundra on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

In fact Jacob is ranked fifth in Australia for his age group and made the quarter-finals in the mixed, singles and doubles events in Caloundra.

Jacob, who plays competition at the Ocean Grove Badminton Club on Wednesdays and trains at The Avenue-based facility

on Friday nights, said a love of the sport developed after playing backyard badminton more than four years ago.

“It all started with the backyard badminton,” Jacob laughed.

Mother Sharon said Jacob got into the sport to keep him occupied at first, but not long after the representative honours followed.

Sharon who travelled with Jacob to Caloundra, had an active role at the Australian Under 15 Badminton Championships working as the Team Manager for the Victorian Under 15 1 and 2 teams.

“Jacob got into badminton probably about four-and-half years ago with us (my husband and I) pushing him to do something because he did not have any outside activities,” Sharon said.

“He has just loved the sport of badminton ever since and found he had a bit of a passion for it – winning juniors here in Geelong.

“It probably started with the backyard badminton, it was quite comical at times.”

It was then a family friend who invited Jacob to train and play badminton at Ocean Grove.

The Ocean Grove Badminton Club which

has 65 members is only one of two registered clubs in the wider Geelong region, the other the Geelong Badminton Club based in Corio.

“One of the squads (Jacob) got into, we weren’t happy with its coaches, so someone else said to us ‘Come down to Ocean Grove’ and we did and we haven’t looked back,” Sharon said.

Ocean Grove Badminton Club President Peter Brown said well-renowned local coach Craig Booley, who has played for Australia, had been a great influence on Jacob’s development in the sport.

Booley works as a coach at both the Ocean Grove and Geelong Badminton Clubs.

“Craig (Booley) concentrates a lot with his speed around the court,

he (Jacob) is probably one of the quickest around the court in the Under 15’s,” Brown said.

Jacob credits Booley for his early success in the sport with a stringent focus on having a heavy fitness regime.

“Craig has been really good, he has been really fitness based, he is really big on fitness,” Jacob said.

Jacob who also trains and plays at the Geelong Badminton Club, improved speed on the court has helped him in other sports activities after he recently finished second at Oberon Secondary School cross country in his year level.

The Ocean Grove Badminton Club, is located at 123 The Avenue and is adjacent to the Ocean Grove Football Club.

Jacob Schueler.

OCEAN Grove 13 sets 461 aces defeated Portarlington 12 sets 405 aces. 12 points to 11 points.

with umpiring. This team Practice night will be held MOST Friday nights, with Committee members being there from 6pm to 7.30pm. The courts are open from 5/5.30 for younger Juniors if they would like to come down with parents earlier. Grove a new force under FlapperOCEAN Grove Bowling Club have commenced their Pennant Season in fine style, with newly appointed Australian player Matt Flapper joining the ranks as Coach.

The Grove boys have recruited well and bolstered their playing stocks, which should see them become more competitive throughout all divisions.

Premier Division started the season in fine style and with some new players in the side they all combined well to record an all rinks up victory against last seasons runner up Sebastopol. Craig Hodges on debut for Ocean Grove, after

a stint with Essendon last season in Premier Division, recorded a 10-shot win whilst Anthony Donohue took the reins in the absence of Coach Matt Flapper and led the side to a solid 17 shot Win.

The boys backed up their round one performance, hosting a very determined Webbcona team at home.

Webbcona made the move early and gave everything to the home side.

The Visitors managed to forge ahead by 15 early but the locals had to fight their way back to lead at the break by 4.

After the Break Ocean Grove came out with a

vengeance and started to establish a lead which they were able to hang onto until the finish.

Matt Flapper’s Ocean Grove team of Rod Swan, Terry Brady and Anthony Donohue were the big winners for Grove taking out a 19 shot win.

Craig Hodges side again solid and getting the points by 10.

Two narrow losses to the other two teams and the home side collecting 14 points.

Division Two have recorded a solid start to the season with two very solid wins after round one’s defeat

over Belmont by 16 Shots with the Keith Goldsmith led four the big winners by 17 shots. They backed up Round two hosting Eastern Park and with the Tom Warren led team the big winners by 26 they were able to capitalise on the round one win with a solid 18 points to nil victory.

Division Three have bounced back with a win by 7 after a narrow first round defeat whilst Div 5 are two from two, special mention to the foursome of J. Hughes, N. Wallace, S. Townsend and Skip Alex Cook who trounced their opposition 44-12.

Division One Ladies registered their first win for the season last Tuesday with a solid performance against Geelong West.

After narrow losses to Queenscliff and Highton the team of Kim McConville, Brenda Anderson, Pat Virtue and Gail Meddings led the way for the home side.

A special mention to four of the OG ladies who will contest the Over 60’s State Pairs Final next week. Adele Ryan and Terri Toye will take on Faye Richardson and Pat Virtue in an all Ocean Grove Final.

By Matt Flapper and Brett McCalman

CLUB Grove full-time Bowling coach Matt Flapper introduces a new group of bowlers that will light up the greens at Ocean Grove this season.

Andrew Doyle - He has come across from Leopold. I have known Andrew for 20 years and I went through juniors with Andrew. Has been steady all the time. Originally a greenskeeper at Belmont, but moved jobs to become a train driver and was a bit of a part-time bowler. Has just got back into it last season and wanted a bit more competiveness. He started playing third in our team, very handy player.

Craig Hodges - Originally from the Highton club and spent last year at Essendon Bowls Club with me. He played third in our Premier League Team in Melbourne and is a very solid player. He was Essendon’s Club Champion last year. He is a very steady player and he will skipper our team (at Ocean Grove) this season and a very good player.

Cal Inderberg - Cal has come across from the Highton Bowls Club. He was Division One skipper at Highton last season. He had a bit of success there, they (Highton) won the pennant (Division One). He is a very solid player, he has moved out of (inner) Geelong to be a bit closer to Ocean Grove and that is the main reason he has joined Club Grove.

Paul Cameron - He has come back to the club, he was at Ocean Grove two years ago. He left last season to go back home which is Camperdown, he went back home to play, his family had another baby. He had a great year two years ago, he will be skipper (on a) rink for us.

Terry Thomas - Has come from playing bowls at Leopold as well, just looking for another challenge. He is a very consistent bowler.

Donated and presented by local soccer legend Cath Sattler, this is to be an annual award for females only, not a best & fairest, but for a player who is dedicated, is a good role model, who shows true team spirit, dedication to their club and the sport of soccer, and exhibits good conduct both on and off the field. The Club’s first recipient was Jessica Harper who was more than a little surprised, but very pleased to recieve the award and a soccer ball signed by the current Melbourne Heart women’s team.

AN inspirational knock from Dean Gills led Ocean Grove A-Grade to a 44-run victory in their one-day match against Jan Juc at Jan Juc on October 6. Gills, who opened the batting, blasted his way to an unbeaten 88, while teammate Mitch Hodgson made 46 not out and Mick Kenneady chipped in with 24 as the Grubbers compiled an imposing total of 4/191 from their 40 overs. Ocean Grove coach Lucas Cameron paid respect to his team’s batting efforts. ”(Dean Gills) Gillsy was superb,” Cameron said. ”Dean and Mick Kenneady started a solid run chase and Mitch (Hodgson) finished off the innings brilliantly.with the ball claiming 3/25 from his eight overs, while Stephen Carlile (3/41) and spinner Mick Gill (2/27) both took valuable wickets.

Round 1 points for Grubbers

REIGNING Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association A-Grade premiers Collendina suffered a shock loss to Portarlington in their Round One match on October 6. The Demons won with four wickets to spare at Collendina Recreation Reserve after the visitors bowled out the home side for 150 in 38 overs in their one-day match.Collendina co-coach Eddie Ellwood described the loss as a disappointing way to start the season for last season’s premiers, but said Portarlington deserved their win.”It was disappointing really not to bat out the overs,” Ellwood said.”It is disappointing to be bowled out in a one-day match, let alone two-day match to be bowled out.”Port were just better than us on the day, so full credit to them.”

LOCAL cricket rivalry is on hold until Saturday after the two-day match between Ocean Grove and Collendina was abandoned due to rain on October 13.

The A-Grade clash between Ocean Grove and Collendina, a re-match of last season’s BPCA Grand Final, will now be re-scheduled as a 40 over per side one-day clash this Saturday.

Of the play that was completed, the Grubbers fired down 24 overs against the Cobras, after Collendina won the toss and elected to bat first, at Ocean Grove Memorial Recreation Reserve.

Ocean Grove gained the early ascendancy as Collendina were 3/36 before play was suspended and the rain continued to tumble down.

Grubbers bowlers Lucas Cameron, Steven Carlile and Shaun Braniff all took one wicket apiece.

“We obviously love playing 75 overs, it suits us to play the two-day games, was looking forward to

today the sun was shining when we arrived, but it just was not to be,” said Collendina captain Jye Hearps on Saturday.

“I guess at least we know there will be a result this weekend.”

Ocean Grove coach Lucas Cameron said although it was a bright start by his bowlers, the right decision for play to be stopped was made due to inclement weather.

“It was probably a bit of a shame we had our noses in front in the contest,” Cameron said.

“Obviously common sense if you lose an hour for a rain and the conditions dictate that you have a rest, then so be it, then you come back for a one-dayer the next week.”

MEANWHILE in other A-Grade games in the BPCA, Jan Juc are 2/93 in their match against Barwon Heads at Barwon Heads, Queenscliff

made a total of 244 against Portarlington at Portarlington, Drysdale were all bowled out for 264 against Anglesea at Drysdale and Barrabool remains at 2/11 after dismissing Newcomb for 154.

In other local matches, Collendina were 8-71 after 27 overs in their B-Grade clash at the Snake Pit against Ocean Grove. Grubber bowler Marcus Wirth doing the bulk of the damage with his spell

of 4/32 from 12 overs, while fellow opening bowler Robert Procter was equally effective with 3/23 from 10 overs.

In the C-Grade match at Shell Road, Collendina were dismissed for 79 in 46 overs against Ocean Grove.

Grubbers bowler Alan Bate was in sizzling form with the ball taking 4/12 from eight overs, while Corey Buxton claimed 3/18 from eight overs.

In reply, Ocean Grove

remains 2/39 after 11 overs.

In D-Grade one-day matches, Barwon Heads (125) defeated Collendina by 14 runs (111), Nathan Madden led Ocean Grove 1 (4/200) to a 65-run victory against Newcomb (135) with a well compiled 76, while Ocean Grove 2’s game against Portarlington at Connewarre was declared a draw with the Grubbers at 6/121 after 34 overs before rain stopped play.

Damp start to cricket season pages 38-39

OCEAN Grove based triathlete Denise O’Loghlen is an inspiration to her family, friends and the local community, writes Mark Heenan.

This week, the 42-year-old mother-of-two headed to New Zealand on Monday to compete in the 2012 ITU World Triathlon Championships in Auckland.

Although a keen triathlete as a youngster, a little more than 12 months ago it seemed like a distant reality that O’Loghlen would be representing Australia at an international triathlon meet.

“Last year I lost a lot of weight, I was very overweight and lost nearly 30 kilos,” said O’Loghlen, who works as a Community Care worker.

“I decided to get back into triathlons because I loved them when I was younger.”

She said her two children had been a big motivation for her to get back involved in the sport of triathlons.

“My two kids have been an inspiration and they are very active as well,” O’Loghlen said.

“They’ve actually been inspired by me as well ‘Oh Mum can do all this sort of stuff ’.”

O’Loghlen’s triathlon race involves a 750 metre open water swim, a 20 kilometre bike ride and a 5 kilometre run on Monday October 22 in Auckland.

“They’ve got the Olympic distance (longer) and the sprint distance with the triathlon, but I qualified for the sprint distance,” O’Loghlen said.

Before the triathlon event begins itself the Ocean Grove local will warm up in the Aquathon event that involves a 1 kilometre swim and 5 kilometre run on Wednesday October 17.

O’Loghlen is an active member of the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club.

Part of her training has involved swimming in the chilly spring waters at Ocean Grove main beach, running at Geelong’s Landy Field and clocking up valuable miles on her bike at Eastern Beach.

OCEAN Grove Bowling Club coach and Australian representative Matt Flapper has returned home after some strong performances at the Asia Pacific Merdeka Indoor Bowls Championships in Malaysia.

Flapper, who took over as full-time coach in May, became the 137th player to represent Australia at the international bowls event earlier this month.

The 33-year-old teamed up with Mixed Pairs partner Carla Odgers where they finished fourth after losing their bronze medal play-off to host nation Malaysia 13-7.

The Australian mixed pair of Odgers and Flapper won their quarter-final match against the Philippines 14-9, before losing both their semi-final and bronze medal games to Malaysia.

The pair finished on top of the section.”

Flapper also represented Australia in the Mixed Fours event with Odgers, Claire Duke and Dylan Fisher where they lost to Malaysia 10-15 in the quarter-finals.
