Dear Parents, Thank you all for your support in the opening weeks of school. The start of the year has been wonderful. Students are in class developing the routines they will carry forth throughout the school year. We’ve checked out books, issued lockers and helped students get their school lunches. Students are taking tests, doing presentations and dialoguing with their peers on new and interesting topics. When students struggle in school, we determine if there are problems in any of these areas. We find that when students improve in one or more of these areas, they improve in school.

Brian Corrigan: Malibu High Calculus Teacher & EDUCATION TRAILBLAZER!New Video Learning Equipment allows Santa Monica High kids to take Calculus DE - remotely! Malibu and Samo students are in class together. Starting this fall Malibu High and Santa Monica High are piloting a program using Cisco Telepresence video conferencing units. Each afternoon students from SaMoHi join students from Malibu High under the tutelage of Brian Corrigan and study Calculus DE - multi-variable Calculus, the highest level high school Calculus course offered in our school system and across the country. In prior years students at Santa Monica High School would have to travel to SMCC to take this level of mathematics. This year with only three MHS students signing up for the class, it was likely that it would not have been offered. There were a number of hurdles to overcome not the least of which are schedules that don’t match. It took a real commitment from Mr. Corrigan and Principal Mark Kelly, as well as the District’s willingness to invest in some cutting edge technology to make this happen.

Acknowledging that this program is a small first step, the District hopes to expand the program in the future so that more electives can be offered at MHS and SaMoHi. In addition to holding remote classes, the video units are capable of providing access to virtual field trips to other locations as well as providing staff and community access to programs at both the District office and Santa Monica High. Below is a photo of Mr. Corrigan and his Malibu High students interfacing with their colleagues at Santa Monica High School. Once a week, Mr. Corrigan teaches the class in Santa Monica and transmits to Malibu High so that he can develop relationships with all of his students.

Our school year started with news of success. We learned that we gained 27 points in our Academic Performance Index (API). Our API of 862 is our highest score to date. We attribute our gain to continued focus on teaching the California Content Standards, examining data to identify particular areas for growth and encouraging our students to do their very best on the STAR exams. Our students showed gains in English language arts, science, social studies and mathematics. Our high school English teachers developed an incentive program to motivate students to do their best on the STAR tests. This extra push appears to have paid dividends as we saw strong gains in English language arts. In addition, we started Goals for Graduation as a support system for our Latino and English learners. This program also appears to have made a difference as we had gains of 63 and 45 points, respectively. We are proud of our achievement gains, and I am personally humbled by how hard our teachers and students worked to make these achievement gains.

Our school’s academic success exists within the context of SMMUSD. By now, you have received a letter from the District informing you that our District has entered Program Improvement (PI) status. SMMUSD entered PI status after our District failed to meet Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) as required by No Child Left Behind. In general, schools or districts that receive federal Title I funding, and fail to meet AYP for two consecutive years, enter PI status. Schools, districts, or both schools and districts, may be designated as PI.

What does PI mean for Malibu High? First, we are informing you of the District’s status. Second, we will ask parents and teachers to complete informational needs assessments that will inform the District about our academic programs. Last, the District may implement new programs for improving achievement in specific academic areas.

Malibu High School will never be PI because we are not a Title I school; however, we do contribute to the District’s PI status. A district may fail to meet AYP in 50 ways. Our district missed several targets including participation and achievement targets. Our students are part of the whole, and thus we are a part of the District’s PI status. It is remarkable that our District was able to fend off PI status for ten years. The flaws in the legislation affect all districts (that serve Title I students) making PI status impending for all of us. MHS students are a part of the whole district, and in this way, we too must pursue ways for all of our students to achieve proficiency.

We will continue to focus on areas in which our students’ achievement does not meet our own, or federally legislated, expectations. The goal is for 100% of our students to achieve proficiency in English language arts and mathematics by 2014. One might argue that such a goal is unrealistic or easily argue that the legislated achievement expectations are seriously flawed. However, as a professional educator, I must philosophically embrace the goal of having all of our students achieve proficiency. Anything less would be malpractice. On one hand, we are proud that 70% of our students are proficient in a subject. On the other hand, when we place achievement in the context of a classroom, the number is not so rosy. In a class of 35 students, 70% proficient means 25 students meet our expectations; ten did not. We should never accept that ten students would not learn what they are supposed to learn. We must always maintain a commitment to having the ten students become proficient while ensuring that the other 25 remain proficient. I believe that when we teach students well, they will perform. Our commitment is to teach our students well so they perform and achieve the level of proficiency we expect. Achievement and success are the outcomes of a quality education.

Our API of 862 is wonderful growth for Malibu High. We also met AYP by meeting the required targets in four areas: AYP proficiency levels, API, student participation rates on STAR tests, and graduation rates. We are proud that we are meeting expectations, but remain committed to improving. We continue to strive to provide a high quality, well rounded and personalized educational experience for all students. We do this with your support and by knowing that you place your trust in us to educate your student well.

Thank you for your support, Mark O. KellyPrincipal

Dr. Mark Kelly’s PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE - CONT’D SEPT./OCT.

MENSAJE DE DIRECTOR - DR. MARK KELLY - CONT’D SEPT./OCT.

¡No espere!

Hi Parents, Teachers, Staff, and Students,! Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year. I would like to encourage you to join the Malibu High School and Middle School Parent, Teacher Student Association (PTSA). Through your participation we can provide a stronger voice for our youth in Malibu, Santa Monica, Sacramento, and Washington DC.  Membership is only $6.50 per person and is open to anyone in our community who would like to support the work of our organization.  ! The mission of the PTSA is to make every child's potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children.! For more than 100 years, PTAs and PTSAs have provided support, information and resources to families focused on the health and education of children. The organization was founded in 1897 in Washington DC as the National Congress of Mothers by Alice McLellan Birney and Phoebe Apperson Hearst. This is especially awesome when you consider that women didn't even have the right to vote at this time! ! Some of the big issues PTA has championed over the years include:

•the creation of kindergarten,•institution of child labor laws,•public health service,•hot lunch programs,•a juvenile justice system,•mandatory immunization

More recently  the national PTA has advocated for Science Technolgy Engineering and Mathematics education in core curricula and parent involvement resources.! More than 40 years of research shows that engaged parents and families lead to improved educational outcomes for students.  Membership in PTA is open to anyone who wants to be involved and make a difference for

the education, health, and welfare of children and youth.

Iʼd like to personally thank Vanessa Van Patten (pictured above) for being part of our first Parent Ed Night. Sixty parents turned out for Vanessa’s talk about raising teens in a digital age and how to be more in-tune with their non-verbal communication signals. Her self-effacing sense of humor and ability to bridge communications between teens and parents made her informative and easy to listen to. After taking questions she signed copies of her newly released book, Do I Get My Allowance Before or After I'm Grounded? if you'd like to learn more about her, visit her at her blog Radical Parenting found on the web at http://www.radicalparenting.com/.

Malibu sports teams (soccer, football, track and field, cheerleading, dance team and lacrosse) stand to benefit from an amendment to Malibu’s local coastal plan that would allow lights on the field until 7:30 at night. The football team once enjoyed games at night but for two years have had to hold day games to the dismay of parents and other fans who cannot attend day games. The girls soccer team was unable to compete in CIF championships due to the lack of field lights at MHS.

Voters passed Proposition BB in 2006 to provide 269 Million dollars for School Renovations in our District. Malibu High is getting 8 new classrooms, 2 new bathrooms, a new library and administration building as well as upgrades in existing MS classrooms. Over the summer, school wide safety improvements took place. The building project is still moving through the necessary City and State approval processes.

REFLECTIONS 2011 THEME is“DIVERSITY MEANS…”Top 7 reasons to create an entry for this year's PTA Reflections contest:

1.  You will show everyone your creative side.  Or a different creative side.

2.  When you win, you will be able to put this wonderful achievement on your college application.

3.  You might get extra credit.  Ask your teachers!

4.  You have something important to say about what DIVERSITY MEANS … (this year's theme.)

5.  You write/draw/paint/dance/make videos/photograph stuff etc. anyway because you love to. Why not channel your efforts for this National Contest?

6.  When you see the winning entries, you will kick yourself and say, "I could have done that!  Why didn't I take the time?"

7.  Your family and friends will see you and the other winners in the newspaper and congratulate you for weeks!

Get going on those entries!  Categories are literature, visual arts, film, musical composition, dance choreography and photography.    You can enter more than one category, too.  Middle school and high school are separate divisions.  Deadline is October 28.  You can find all the forms you need on the MHS website.  Go to "Parents" at the top of the home page, then "PTSA," then "Reflections."  (If you can't read the PDF's, try using a different browser.  Google Chrome works for Macs.)

Ninth grader “Lunches with Counselors”Starting September 26, ninth grade students will be meeting in groups of 20 with high school counselors, Luke Sferra and Elle Yaghoobian, for a pizza lunch to get acquainted and share their experiences on the transition process between middle school and high school at Malibu High. This initiative came out of parents’ and counselors' desire to develop relationships with students earlier in high school. The goal  is that with this introduction students will feel more comfortable approaching counselors when they have problems and will develop better relationships with the people who will eventually be writing their college admissions letters of recommendation.

Bike It! Walk It! Pool It! DayThis October 5, make a difference by how you get to school! Ride your bike, walk, take the bus, or carpool to school.

Join this national campaign to reduce emissions, get exercise, and raise awareness of students near schools.

Drivers, please be aware of students on their way to and from school! If you would like to help get this program off the ground at MHS, contact Audra Lembertas Hotchkiss at [email protected]. School leaders at Santa Monica High School won the Presidential Commendations in May for their efforts to increase the use of bicycle transportation to schools in our district. Let’s show all the ways that Malibu students can fulfill the challenge of BIKE IT, WALK IT, POOL IT DAY!

PTSA/COLLEGE CENTER-Book Talk and ReviewHave you started reading? The College Center and PTSA will be hosting a discussion on The Gatekeepers by Jacques Steinberg. This nonfiction book tells the story of a college admissions officer's journey to select a talented, diverse freshman class for a highly selective East Coast university. From pot brownies to chatting with Chelsea Clinton, the author weaves an entertaining story of students, parents, and administrators grappling with the college admissions process. Come meet with other parents and our college counselor, Ah Young Chi, to discuss this book on Tuesday, November 28 at 8:30 am in the MHS library.

July 2011

Greetings to All in Our Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Community,

I am thrilled to introduce myself to all of you as the new superintendent of SMMUSD. During the past nearly twenty-five years, I have had a rich and varied career in education, beginning with my student teaching days in San Francisco up to my most recent post as Chief Leadership Officer for the Palmdale School District. I am eager to bring my experience and passion for public education to SMMUSD. As I have begun to meet people in the area, I am continuously impressed with the pride our community has in our schools and with the personal commitment so many have made to make our schools great.

I know this year will continue to be a financially challenging one. We will need to work together to respond appropriately to the budget constraints, while striving to use our resources wisely to provide the best education possible. This is clearly a community that unites to support the endeavors of staff and the Board of Education as they strive to provide a high quality learning environment for all of the students we serve. As such a community, I have no doubt that we can work collaboratively to handle these difficult times and continue to move the district forward.

As I become familiar with all there is to know about the Santa Monica-Malibu USD, I know that there is much work that has already begun and upon which we will build. This includes the outstanding work done by staff and the community in developing the Strategic Plan 2015. I will be continuing this work and collaborating with the committee and the community to develop our implementation strategy and timeline.

I look forward to the opportunity to get to know all of you and will be spending much of my time in the next few months meeting staff, parents, students, and community members. I want to begin to understand the culture and climate of SMMUSD, learn about our rich traditions, and hear the hopes the community has for the future of our district. I will work to continue the partnerships already established in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District and to build on the work already in place. Meanwhile, we will pursue innovation and improved practices and we will reach out to forge new relationships that will help us continue to provide an excellent education for each and every student in our district.

I look forward to working with all of you.

Sincerely,Sandra LyonSuperintendent
