Biographical Sketches
Third grade students from Mrs. Torre’s classroom create “Biographical
Sketches”, through research of
American historical figures. A variety of resources were available for use. Students learned how to navigate search engines,
select information relevant to their
topic, and organize their findings to
create a biographical sketch using not only pictures, but words, as well.

For the past ten years, I have worked as a director and program coordinator for an elementary school in Havelock NC. I will be completing my bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education (birth-kindergarten) at the end of this month. I have a 3 yr old daughter, named Avery. I am so grateful to be a part of an awesome school. I look forward to an exciting school year.
YUM….I Like It Lifetime Nutrition and Wellness is a newly designed course (formally known as Nutrition and Food Science) in Texas.
This course focuses on food safety with a strong emphasis on Nutrition. Students are learning about the role of
nutrients, long term effects of food choices, how to read food labels, and many other topics to help them have a
healthy lifestyle. The students’ favorite part is cooking….and yes….Mrs. Duron is choosing healthy recipes. This week, students made bran muffins, and they actually
liked them.

First grade students pick up litter and check the bird food supply in the school habitat. Each month a grade level is responsible for making sure this
area is maintained.
Thank you to all the helpful kids!
Everyone Loves Money!First graders in Mrs. Allen’s class work with money. Too bad it was just play money but they were still excited. It helps to practice learning to recognize
the coins.

UClean Water for Every Child
The average American uses 150 gallons of clean water a day. The average person in a developing nation struggles to find 5 gallons.
50% of all schools in the world do not have access to clean, safe water.
Unsafe water causes more deaths each year than all forms of violence, including war. 90% of these deaths are children under the age of 5.
Lackland Elementary's theme this year is "Working Together to Change the World". One of the world's largest problems is the lack of clean water and basic sanitation. People in developing countries spend many hours a day walking miles to the nearest water source, which is often unprotected and likely to make them sick. Women and children usually bear the burden of water collection, which exposes them
to many risks and prevents them from attending school. The water they often find is not safe and causes many of the people to become ill and to catch diseases.
This year, Lackland Elementary will work together to change the world by raising money to build a well in a developing country. Our goal is to raise $5,000, which will fund an entire well project and provide clean water for an entire community. We will be working with Charity:Water, a non‐profit organization
where 100% of public donations directly fund water projects. We will be hosting several events throughout the remainder of the school year in order to raise money for this cause. Just $20 can provide
a person with clean water for 20 years! Our first fundraiser is a “Change for Change” money drive, where students are encouraged to bring in
any change to donate to our service project. Students can ask their families to donate money instead of buying them gifts or toys or paying them allowance for any chores they do. Families can also make a
donation online at our Charity:Water homepage, http://mycharitywater.org/lacklandeagles. Thank you for your support and for helping us to work together to change the World!
