New business model makes latest mobile

phone technologies available to all

ZTE and mobile network operator TMN have shaken

up the Portuguese smartphone market with a business

model that makes smartphones available to virtually all

handset users, enabling anyone to enjoy mobile internet

access and the latest mobile applications.

ZTE is now speaking to operators around Europe

about the production of operator branded or joint-

branded smartphones.

ZTE's handset business is focused on customising

phones in association with operators for each individual

market – targeting specific market segments that the

operator believes offer the best business opportunities.

"We cannot disclose any of the discussions currently

under way with other operators, but we expect to be

delivering smartphones into most Western European

markets by the end of 2010," said ZTE Executive Vice

President and head of the Mobile Terminals Division, Mr

He Shiyou.

Since its launch in May this year, the co-branded

ZTE/TMN Bluebelt 3G handset has taken 30% of the

Portuguese smartphone market, and is predicted to take

over 40% percent by the end of the year.

ZTE and TMN have launched the new Bluebelt II and

Silverbelt phones running Microsoft Windows® phone

to maintain the momentum of the Bluebelt handset's

success, and expect to continue building market share.

Demand for smartphones has reached the point

where they are no longer seen as a luxury or a strictly

work-related item. ZTE recognised this trend early on and

invested in the development of smartphones that not only

offer the sleek design, superior processing capabilities

and attractive prices consumers desire, but that also work

Information Rounder

Bluebelt's first steps occurred in April 2008 when Mr. He Shiyou, Executive

Vice President of ZTE visited TMN Portugal and attended a high level meeting with

TMN's and Portugal Telecom’s Board Management.

In April 2008, the project of ZTE known as "Xiang" was launched and

positioned itself as a 3G Windows Mobile PDA with a set of features that would

make it perfect for the corporate sector and, at the same time, appealing to the

mass market segment.

Thus was born a challenge for ZTE to produce an exclusive terminal for

Portugal and for the Portugal Telecom Group. The phone should be feature-rich,

have an aggressive price, and suit the image of TMN. During the summer, there

were numerous project meetings for the detailed definition of terminal specifications.

The first step was to customize the look of the terminal. Details such as the shape

of the keyboard, the size of the keys, the display screen, the color combination, and

handset size are essential to achieve correct positioning. The second step was the

definition and approval of software specifications.

Meanwhile the first proposals were born and TMN gave the phone the name

"Bluebelt". The project went on at full speed and in late summer the first operative

samples appeared. It was a moment of great satisfaction.

For ZTE, the project held great importance despite the relatively small size

of the Portuguese market; the experience of PT Group in launching innovative

products and the level of partnership between the two companies made it possible

Press Clipping

to develop a product that would be included in the product

portfolio of ZTE, with benefits for both companies since it would

be an exclusive handset to Portugal.

The process of terminal customization meanwhile was

completed and the phone arrived at the final point. At that time of

the project, a team of eight people were working in Portugal on a

permanent basis in direct contact with the R&D team in Shanghai,

to test and improve the successive versions of software. Even

during Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year holidays, the

team continued to work. In early February, 2009, the final version

was almost ready and the launch was getting closer and closer...

The final product is a stylish PDA with an original design,

whose name derives from the blue line surrounding the terminal.

The main features are the high speed data transfer rate —

HSUPA technology, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth — Windows Mobile

6.1 Pro, push-mail, video call, FM radio, pre-installed TMN

applications, 3.2 MP camera with flash, GPS, dedicated access

keys Meo, memory card, bi-directional mouse, "qwerty" and

"touchscreen" input, between other features that aim to position

"Bluebelt" prominently as the best value for money/quality

segment. (from TMN’s magazine t notícias)

mobile TV and mobile music have widespread use in

these functions at these times."

In 3G era, the network speeds are increased

greatly, which enable us to watch TV programs on

mobile phones using streaming media technology.

Meanwhile, the entrance of China Mobile Multimedia

Broadcasting (CMMB), Digital Video Broadcasting

(DVB) and other mobile TV standards enrich the ways

for mobile TV access. As to mobile music, the current

online music download but the traffic volume and time

"Online shopping has become a fashion. As 3G networks

of mobile phone users would shop from their mobile phones,

even purchasing the daily utilities such as rice and detergent.

What's more, people would pay fees, transfer accounts,

do financing and perform other functions via their mobile

phones. I have been expecting such life for a long time."

Mobile phone shopping will embrace its high-growth

period in the near future. The users can then use mobile

phone to search product information and buy products

online as long as their phones support mobile Internet

service. In 2G age, we can receive and inquire about bills via

mobile phone. In 3G age, we can receive and search bills

of more service types, including water, power, gas, TV and

broadcasting, and communications. The items of mobile

phone bills will also be more diversified, including fees,

account balances, point accumulation, preferential items,

consumption analysis charts, and other information.

October 2009

way was making a phone call, but we could

only hear their voice, and it was impossible

to see their face. But now, we can dial their

numbers whenever we miss them, and

directly see their video when there is the

option to place video call. Everything has

a bad side. For instance, you want to go

outside with your friend and lie to your family

that you are working overtime; but your lie is

exposed by a video call…

Video call is not only applied to the family

life, and video conferencing is also introduced

as a new 3G service. Although there was the

video conferencing system before the 3G

rollout, we could only have video conference

on computer. Now, with the kick-off of 3G,

we can hold a video conference between

mobile phones. Thus, even on a rushing train

we can still conduct a timely meeting; we can

learn situations of the company when on a

vacation overseas…

Some say the world has become

smaller, and the 3G video conferencing is

the greatest contributor to it.

Mobile Multimedia Entertainment is needed to turn an

insipid life into an interesting one. From

the beginning of 2G era, we could enjoy

multimedia services via mobile phone,

for example, watching streaming media,

reading books and other informative

resources online, but due to the limited

network speeds and contents, we can

hardly get satisfactory results.

With the launch of 3G, mobile TV is

added into the list of featured 3G services.

We can directly watch TV on our mobile

phones, which are synchronized with TV

broadcasting programs. Thus, on the way

to and from work we will no longer worry

about missing a ball game, we can just

find a place near the window, take out the

phone, plug in the earphone, turn on the

mobile TV, and enjoy ourselves all the way.

In addition to mobile TV, we can also

enjoy the 3G mobile music service. Although

in 2G era we could download ring tones and

MP3s via cell phone, the network speeds and

contents fell far behind our requirements; in the

process of searching and downloading songs,

we could have exhausted our enthusiasm.

Now, our mobile phones can be turn into magic

music boxes at any time — we can quickly find

and download the songs we want. What needs

to be worried is only that whether the storage

space is big enough.

Online Game It's no longer anything new to play

games via a mobile phone. We are usually

accustomed to playing Taken, Fantasy Era

and other hot mobile phone games. However,

such online mobile phone games are relatively

simple, and the pictures are somewhat coarse,

which are incomparable to computer games.

With the arrival of 3G era, operators in different

countries has been actively building the mobile

phone game platform, and many quality

games come forth one after the other. We

can experience online mobile phone games

that are more stable, faster, cheaper, and have

higher compatibility and better visual effects.

Thus, when we feel bored, we would select a

game and enjoy ourselves to the full.

3G networks are seeing rapidly improving performance worldwide. As the network

coverage ratio gets higher and the selection of terminals gets richer, 3G will become an

indispensable part of everybody's life. Whether it is work or entertainment, 3G is your

best companion.

Experience 3G

October 2009

In countries where 3G is still at its early stage,

people are accepting and expecting various changes

brought by this new thing. These changes are not

simply about network upgrade, but represent a

move towards a whole new lifestyle. In countries

where 3G is at its advanced stage, 3G has totally

changed everybody's life. Mobile phone monitoring,

distance education and other 3G applications are all

part of a new life, part of high-tech life in 3G era.

The Future 3G Video E-mail

It is no longer anything new to send and receive e-mails via a cell

phone. The mail contents are usually some monotonous words, pictures or

attachments. What if one day we do not want to write, nor is it convenient

to write while it is necessary to send e-mails. Never mind, let's just use

video e-mails. Japan's NTT DoCoMo provides the video e-mail service,

and people has been accustomed to use mobile phone to make video

records on streets, buses, in malls, then send the video e-mails to the target

locations, which saves the trouble of typing words into the cell phone while

allowing the mail contents to express people's thoughts more directly.

Mobile Phone Monitoring In those countries where 3G is mature, mobile phone video

has a significant usage — mobile phone monitoring. People can

realize remote monitoring at any time and any place via cell phone

or computer. It includes mobile video monitoring, intelligent security

and protection warning, intelligent home appliance controlling and

other functions. With a mobile phone, shop owners, can monitor

their shops at night; businesspersons can monitor and examine the

offices; people on duty can monitor and look over their children,

elders or pets; in case of a fire alarm, people can know it in time,

and take actions to reduce the loss. When it is found that lights

have not been switched off due to negligence, you can turn them

off in time via the intelligent home appliance controlling function…

Distance Education Distance education institutions we often see actually only play

recorded educational lecture videos via a computer. But with the support

of the 3G network, the distance education has already evolved into online

video-based education. We could put questions to teachers and have

them solved in time, just as we are having a lesson at school.

Wireless Life In Japan, wireless life has permeated every corner of life and wireless

services such as mobile phone video and mobile payment are prevalent.

In 2004, NTT DoCoMo began deploying mobile devices containing the

FeliCa contactless IC chip developed by Sony. The FeliCa card makes it

possible for mobile devices to contain data such as personal identification,

bank account numbers and other personal information. Therefore, NTT

DoCoMo phones enabled consumers to pay at vending machines and

merchants'point of sale. Based on Mobile FeliCa, NTT DoCoMo has

developed a wide network of partnerships and business models. In Europe

and USA, real-time video traffic service for mobile phone has already been

launched. Hutchison 3G has innovatively introduced the "Traffic Live"

feature, where live traffic data is quickly transmitted via 3G network to those

who need it. This is a task impossible in 2G era. You needn't worry about

being directly jammed into a flow of vehicles by the dull GPS.

3G is already walking into our life. The wonderful 3G

life creates closer ties between countries and brings people

into closer contacts. We are always expecting more stories

related to 3G while there are already beautiful sceneries

along the road to 3G.

InterviewPeople

An Interview with Mr. Zhang Yadong, General Manager of ZTE's Data Card Product Line

ZTE's data cards did not gain momentum

until this year, but once the momentum is

generated, nothing can stop it from soaring in

the market. ZTE's data card sales have topped 7 million

in first half of 2009, representing an increase of 366%

compared to the same period last year, the fastest growth

amongst all manufacturers. Meanwhile, ZTE has made a

breakthrough in the overseas high-end markets with the

revenues from high-end markets such as Japan, North

America and Europe making up 40% of the overall

revenue. What do the numbers of rapid growth indicate?

We have recently conducted an interview with Mr.

Zhang Yadong, General Manager of ZTE's Data Card

Product Line.

Though there was a prior appointment, the interview

was still in a hurry. Mr. Zhang had a meeting in the

morning and had to rush to another company for business

negotiation in the afternoon; then he had to go on an

overseas business trip. So our interview had to be done

during the one-hour break at noon.

Enhancing Technology InnovationIn 2008, there was a large gap between the shipment and sales revenue of

ZTE data cards and those of our major competitors, which urged the high-level

management of ZTE to rethink the product strategies.

Mr. Zhang said ZTE began research on data cards as early as 2004, and

therefore is technologically well-grounded. With the arrival of the 3G era, global

demands for data cards soar. At the end of 2008, the high-level management

of our company made a decisive move to separate data card from the WCDMA

product line. The crux was to improve our product planning, cost control and market

competitiveness combined with our own rapid growth. Meanwhile, by concentrating

the resources, we hope to make headway in R&D and marketing.

Dedication and Persistence Pay OffBy Zhao Lili

InterviewPeople

With a R&D team of over 600 members, we rapidly established a comprehensive data

card product line, which includes professional teams of demand exploitation, system design,

hardware and software development, structure design and testing. At present, we have

a comprehensive data card product portfolio, which can be divided into eight categories:

2G EDGE, CDMA2000 1×, TD-SCDMA, WCDMA, CDMA EV-DO, WiMAX and modules

(including Mobile Internet and Machine to Machine modules) and netbook, he said.

As for product R&D and technology innovation, Mr. Zhang emphasized that ZTE's

data card R&D team has a good understanding of terminal products and is far-sighted.

Meanwhile, the R&D strategy, which focuses on cost control, enabled the team to harvest

great R&D success. This year, ZTE launched the HSPA+ data card MF662, offering the

highest speed in the industry, the world's first plug-and-play TV data card MF645 and the

latest Windows 7-based data card.

Data card, as a consumer product, should not only meet consumer demands in

function, but also pays great attention to Industrial Design (ID). Fine and exquisite design

is a source of aesthetic enjoyment that promotes consumer's purchasing desire. Mr.

Zhang told the reporter that design includes three aspects: technology, material and ID.

In particular, technology is of the greatest importance because it affects the class and

feel of the products. Only the products with high technology can give people a sense of

visual enjoyment. Second comes the material, which includes both material and texture

in a broader sense and determines the quality of products. Last comes the ID, which

determines the appearance of products. ID is the forerunner in the turnaround and upgrade

of manufacturing, and innovation of design is very critical.

ZTE has devoted great energy to the design of terminal products, and it has set up

China's largest wireless broadband terminal

design center in Shanghai. The company

has six design teams located in the world's

major markets, which analyze the consumer

demands, and also China's largest terminal

user experience center. Especially, ZTE has

established partnerships with many world-

renowned design companies. All these

guarantee the first-class innovation and design

of the products. ZTE's products are designed

to be slim, compact, colorful, fashionable

and exquisite, so as to meet the aesthetic

requirements of various customers.

It is also revealed that the research teams

of ZTE data card are distributed in overseas

places such as USA and Sweden as well as two

Chinese cities Shanghai and Xi’an. The company

spends 10% of its revenue on R&D to guarantee

its leading position in the data card industry. With

profound understanding of market demands,

heavy investment in R&D and the research ethics

that emphasize innovation, the company has

been able to become the leader of the wireless

broadband terminal market in a short notice of

time.

Making Breakthroughs in High-End Markets

In March 2009, CCID Consulting released

its report entitled Review of China's 3G Mobile

Phone Market in 2008, which pointed out that

the sales volume of 3G handsets reached

352,000 units in 2008, and ZTE's data card

and handsets held a 37.8% market share to

take the first position in China's 3G terminal

market. Meanwhile, ZTE's data cards

occupied a share of 60.5% in China's 3G

data card market, taking a far lead over other

manufacturers. ZTE also records rapid growth

in the whole field of wireless broadband

data card: In the first half of 2009, the sales

volume of ZTE data cards reached 7 million

sets, which is a 366% increase over the same

period last year. Till the end of Q2 2009, ZTE ZTE and Kyivstar, Ukraine's largest GSM operator, hold a joint conference to launch data products ZTE MF622 and ZTE MZ31

October 2009

has narrowed the gap between it and the

industry leader.

"We have a highly skilled team covering

research, marketing, logistics, legal affairs

and production, which enables us to break

our shipment record each month and remain

at the front of the industry", Mr. Zhang said.

"In addition to extensive cooperation with

China's three major domestic operators,

we also establish partnership relations

with overseas mainstream operators with

breakthrough made in three high-end

markets including Japan, North America and

Europe. In Europe alone, our data cards have

entered five major multinational operators,

namely, T-Mobile, Vodafone, Telefonica,

Orange and H3G. We also have large

shipments to South and Central America,

Russia and China."

This July, he said, we have signed a

cooperation agreement with WILLCOM, the

fourth largest mobile operator in Japan, for

supplying our 3G data card MF633 to Japan's

market. This cooperation marks a milestone in

our overall strategic business roadmap.

In addition, in the first half of 2009,

ZTE cooperated with Vodafone Italy for

supplying Italian users with 3G data cards

including 3.6M HSDPA data card K3565 and

7.2M HSUPA data card K3765. These two

products have high level of customization

and rich colors including white, pink,

blue, purple and black. In Vodafone Italy's

Website, ZTE's colorful data cards hanging

from the balloons are flying in the sky, like a

gust of colorful wind.

It is also revealed that ZTE has signed

an agreement with Norwegian operator

Telenor this July, which involves the delivery

of two million sets of USB data cards in the

coming 12 months to Telenor. At present,

ZTE has provided data card products to over

160 operators in 88 countries worldwide,

supplying them more than 2,500 customized

versions of data cards.

Strengthening Cost Control Meeting customer requirements is critical to longevity for a product. Meeting customer

requirement is not only embodied in meeting the requirement for product functions but

also reducing cost for customers. Mr. Zhang said ZTE's data cards take cost control into

consideration in both the initial stage of R&D and design and the later stage of packaging.

As for function development and design, ZTE, after surveying its targeted market, makes

customized products for different customers and pursues minimal design to lower

development cost and accelerate time-to-market.

Green packaging has been a prevalent ethic of the world today, which is also a

guideline for data card products. Mr. Zhang told the reporter that ZTE has always tried to

incorporate the ethics of environmental protection into the product design. For example, it

launched the eco-friendly packaging for Internet access card, which reduces the weight of

packaging by 75% and the associated carbon emissions by 75%. Moreover, 90% of the

packaging material is recyclable. Meanwhile, the Internet access card improves its design

for lowering power consumption and the power will be reduced from 10 to 3mA when the

card enters the standby mode, reducing energy consumption. This packaging suits users,

improves enterprise profits and contributes to lower air freights.

It is the company's pursuit of innovation in design, cost control, and environmental

protection that enable ZTE data card to expand its brand value.

Calm but Confident At the end of the interview, Mr. Zhang talked calmly about the prospect of data cards:

"We are trying our best to reach the goal of producing 15 million data cards in 2009 and

become neck and neck with the No. 1 of the industry in terms of shipment in 2010 and

strive to be the No. 1 of the industry in 2011." His unparalleled confidence is hidden in

his poised manner.

By Jin Yi

It is deep into midnight and everything is silent. The dim moonlight sheds

on the milky table through the folded curtains. I get up and push the door

of my study open and begin to recall those days in Havana…

Feb. to , Overcast in Shanghai, Drizzling in Paris, Cloudy in Havana

It had been three years after I boarded the

B777 of Air France last time, and the excitement

of my Romanian trip had vanished. The steel

frames of the Pudong Airport were magnificent

as usual at night. Except for a short stay at

Charles de Gaulle Airport, I shall spend the

greater part of my future journey in the narrow

passenger compartment. Thinking of this, I was

overwhelmed by a feeling of repugnance.

During the 30 hours journey, the plane

flew across the Euro-Asian continent, and

across the vast Atlantic Ocean. There was

an outburst of cheering and applause as

our B747 (we were transferred to B747 in

Paris) landed in Havana Airport. I was deeply

affected by the simple and enthusiastic

expression of feelings from the passengers.

So we left our suitcases behind, rolled up our

sleeves and started our initial cooperation with

our Cuban friends.

Most buddies would readily agree that

exhibition arrangement is more of labor work

than mental activities, which is one of the

signs of our equipment's matureness. Of

course we were much obliged to the previous

efforts of Cheng Weichu—who canceled the

trip to hometown on New Year's Day, flew to

Shenzhen and took up the responsibility of

coordination. Facing the tidy exhibition booth

and smooth service demonstration, I could

not remember what we had been doing for

the last four consecutive days. But the sincere

smile of the Cuban buddies, the hustle and

bustle of two girls, the busy Hu Jing, and the

before-sales colleagues who rushed to the

exhibition hall right after arrival, all had left a

deep impression on me.

Simplicity is truth. Why not get over the

miserable and embrace Havana with a light

mood?

Feb. to , Cloudy to Sunny in Havana, -0 Degrees

Rubbing my bleary eyes, I walked to the

window, pulled open the golden curtains and

pushed the light blue window open. A wave

of sea breeze touched my face with humid

moisture and soothed away my tiredness.

After the arrival yesterday, my buddy

Hu Jing at the local office drove us to the

exhibition site. The exhibition hall of our

company was stacked with wooden boxes

and some of them were ripped open; the

Radio Network Controller (RNC) stood

impressively before us. A few Cuban buddies

were discussing how to arrange them.

Obviously, we needed to give them a hand.

The exhibition began on Feb. 9, which

was the traditional lantern festival in China. Half

a hemisphere away, my parents were admiring

the moon while I had much regret not being

able to spend the holidays together with them

for so many years due to my busy work.

The beautiful PANOROMA Hotel was

facing the sea to the north. Though unable

to see the sun coming out from the sea, we

were able to admire the sunset in the ocean.

Cheng Weichu and I witnessed the grand

moment of the sun falling into the Caribbean

Sea. We sat silently on the rocks by the shore

and did not speak for a long while, until the

sun was dimmed by the darkness. Cheng,

who was abroad for the first time, had never

been to the seaside before. I had no idea

how he felt at that moment; for me, it was just

tranquility. The stars in the night reminded me

of my childhood and the sound of sea waves

reverberated in my night dream.

We had met many Chinese people during

the five-day exhibition. Some were friends

from the industry who generously offered their

help; some were overseas students in Cuba

who were visiting the exhibition. Seeing many

Chinese exhibitors and the Yutong Bus in

front of the hotel gate, I once again deeply felt

the strength of our motherland.

Feb. to , Sunny in Havana, Overcast with Rain in Paris, Drizzling in Shanghai

It was a short stay, but the old city of

Havana was all unfolded before our eyes.

This was a picture of blue sea, white

seagulls, gray lighthouses, colorful paintings,

soaring church buildings, dilapidated cabins,

magnificent squares and layered old city.

We did not see a single fishing boat in the

long bay; the occasionally passing container

ships entered the port silently. Without the

usual stench of ports, the shore was a pleasant

site for the tourists even without the beach.

The architecture of Havana was nostalgic,

the people there were cheerful.

What I saw was beyond the description of my clumsy expression; yet what I heard

will always stay a treasured memory in my heart.

I wished so much to stay when I had to leave Havana. At night, Hu Jing drove us to the

airport and Zhao Dan, who always smiled, hugged us goodbye, one by one. The sunset glow

shed on the somewhat shabby airport terminal and left a long, long shadow. I looked forward

earnestly for the next time when I can visit Havana again and say "Hello, Havana!"

The Master of Animation If we have to choose a name to represent

Japan's animated films in the 1990s, it

must be Hayao Miyazaki, who can be

compared with America's Walt Disney. His

representative animated movies include:

Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, Kiki's

Delivery Service, Only Yesterday, Porco

Rosso, Ocean Waves, Spirited Away and

Howl's Moving Castle. While animation is

often considered to be for children, Miyazaki's

films have universal appeal. This is because

Miyazaki's animations explore profound

themes such as humanity's relationship with

nature, growth, search and freedom while having

a distinct flavor of Japanese culture.

The Path of GrowthHayao Miyazaki was born Jan. 5, 1941 in

Tokyo. During World War II, Miyazaki's father

was the director of Miyazaki Airplane, owned

by Miyazaki's uncle. During this time, Miyazaki

developed a fascination with aviation, which

was later manifested as a recurring theme in

his films.

Miyazaki attended first through third

grades at a school in Utsunomiya City, where

he got close to nature. Humanity's relationship

with nature is a recurrent them in his later films.

From 1947 to 1955, Hayao's mother was sick

in bed with spinal tuberculosis. His later film My

Neighbor Totoro (1988) was, in many ways, a

reflection of this ordeal.

In his third year at high school in

1958, he saw the film Hakujaden, which is

considered "the first-ever Japanese feature

length color animation". His interest in

animation began at that time and he decided

he wanted to become a comic artist. After

high school, Miyazaki attended Gakushuin

University, where he was an active member

of "Children's Literature Research Club".

In 1963, Hayao graduated from the

University with degrees in Political Science

and Economics. He landed a job at Toei

Animation in 1963 April and began his

road as an animator.

Miyazaki's AnimationThe reason why Miyazaki's films

have a large number of audience is that

he invest his films with rich meanings —

profound reflection on nature, growth,

search and freedom.

NatureThe Japanese people have a reverence

for the spirits of nature and they believe

that every object has a spirit inside. Under

this influence, Miyazaki's animations

frequently explore the relat ionship

between human and nature.

From the contradiction between the

"rotten sea" and human in Valley of the

Wind to the battle between a man-made

iron mill and the animal gods in Princess

Mononoke and again to Muska's looting

of the castle in the sky in Castle in the

Sky, Miyazaki explores the irreconcilable

conflict between man and nature.

Growing upMiyazaki has expressed strong feelings

about the independence of children, saying

that what he wants to do is "to tell children

that you can not be swallowed by your

parents and you must be independent from

your parents". Spirited Away is a typical film

themed on growing up. Miyazaki tried his

best to create the protagonist Chihiro,

a sullen 10-year-old girl. She grows up

thanks to a strange, sometimes terrifying

journey to another world. When in an

extremely helpless situation, she begins

to discover her own power and her true

value of existence.

SearchThe films of Miyazaki constantly

remind the audience: Do not forget

too fast; do not move too fast; stop

sometimes to ask yourself "Who am I?"

It is a profound philosophical proposition

that Miyazaki tries to explore through his

animations. This is embodied in Laputa,

a city in the sky in Castle in the Sky,

Sophia who regains her youth after a

great adventure in Howl's Moving Castle.

Of course, it is Spirited Away that delves

most deeply into this proposition. The

film has received many awards.

Chihiro is accidentally thrown into a

spirit world and is forced into slave labor

at the bathhouse which Yubaba the

witch rules. Yubaba gives her the name

"Sen" which is derived from "Chihiro".

Chihiro regains her original name after

great hardships; Haku, who used to

be "Kohaku River's Spirit", falls into

Yubaba's servitude due the destruction

of the river. At last, Chihiro helps him

A Name Card of the AgeFrom his first film Valley of the Wind (1984) to Howl's Moving Castle in 2004, Miyazaki's

Overall CustomizationCreating a Dignified Life

Since ancient times, customization has always been associated with dignity. It was once a privilege enjoyed by

the royal family and genteel aristocrats. Gradually, customization has toppled the cheap mass production in

the industry era, and customized jewelries, customized dresses, etc. have entered every aspect of a high-taste

life. No wonder that Hollywood stars have been pursuing customization. Audrey Hepburn liked to show her style

through"custom ceremonial clothes and jewelries"; Marilyn Monroe chose custom fit shoes from Ferragamo to play

up her unique sex appeal; Madonna wore customized jewelries at her concerts …

What is Customization Customization does not simply mean customization of products demanded by

users, tailored technical services and follow-up services are also an important part of

customization. Of course, customization does not necessarily mean costliness and

privilege, for example, in the communications industry where a mature customization

service chain has already been established for a long time, customization has been

accepted by more and more people.

Worldwide, terminal customization and service customization have already

become the mainstream development direction of the communications industry in

the 3G era. Just as mentioned above, customization is not confined to terminal alone,

service customization is also an important part of it. As a leading global provider of

telecommunications equipment and network solutions, ZTE not only has a rather good

performance in terminal customization, but also in custom-made service.

ZTE's Road of Customization With experience in providing customization

service to more than 500 operators globally, ZTE

has also played various important roles in China's

3G customization development. In 2009, ZTE

has carried out a series of terminal customization

cooperation with China's three major operators.

In addition to this, ZTE has a comprehensive

development in customized after-sales services. ZTE

provides customized after-sales services for China's

three major operators, draws up special after-

sales service strategies, and organizes professional

customized service teams. In May 2009, ZTE

October 2009

launched a mobile club www.ztemc.com, which

provides download services of pictures, music,

games, software, videos, and e-books. In

particular, the mobile club provides customized

contents and services for users of different

operators.

ZTE also has an equally outstanding

performance in customization cooperation

with international operators. In the international

market where operator-customized services

are well developed, ZTE carves a niche for itself

by providing end users with richer customized

services.

Take the customized after-sales service

in Australia as an example: ZTE adopts three

different modes according to sales channels and

product characteristics.

1. Terminal user – shop – after-sales agents. For

terminal users of operators’ sales outlets, they can

be directly served in operators’ shops; then the

after-sales agents will repair the faulty handsets.

This makes the network cover remoter places,

and enables more users to enjoy fast services

directly.

2. Terminal user – after-sales agent. For terminal users

of the sales outlets not directly under operators, they

can directly require the agents to provide services.

This enables terminal users to talk with the agents to

have more satisfactory services.

3. Home service. As for vehicle-mounted

Recognitions Around the World Capitalizing on years of accumulation in customized services, ZTE's after-sales service

has repeatedly received honors and awards. ZTE has won high approvals from China's three

major operators for its excellent accomplishments. The latest award is an honorary award for G3

terminal marketing cooperation given by China Mobile Beijing Branch in July 2009.

In providing customization service for international operators, ZTE has also gained

honors repeatedly. In June 2009, a high-level official of Telstra's Retail Group stated that

his group (the national repair center) has had a two year history with ZTE and that of all the

vendors his team deals with, ZTE is, by a large margin, the most professional and easiest to

work with of all the vendors. He explained that it was ZTE's process that was inspiring.

In June 2009, ZTE after-sales achieved a good result in the quarterly scoring of the US

operator MetroPCS. The scoring covers comprehensive appraisal and ranking in terms of

market, logistics, brand, after-sales service and other items of MetroPCS's seven suppliers.

With respect to the after-sales service, ZTE was ranked the first place among the seven

suppliers in both the third and fourth quarters of 2008, and the second place in the first

quarter of 2009. Among the seven suppliers: ZTE, Motorola, Samsung, Nokia, Kyocera,

Huawei and UT Starcom (replaced by RIM in 2009), ZTE has a remarkable advantage in

after-sales service.

products, the after-sales agents will come to the customers’ homes for warranty services.

While providing customization services for the US market, ZTE has adopted more

meticulous, intimate services, regarding US consumers’ consumption habits and industry

practices as well as sales modes, for example, complete replacement of the shell, mirror

surface and other external small spare parts, for faulty handset. In order to monitor the

service quality for customers, ZTE also introduces strict quality inspection and testing

specifications in the US, for example, the AQL standard.

In the development of future cell phones, customization is an inevitable trend.

Especially in the communications field, one can only become outstanding in numerous

manufacturers by providing overall in-depth customization plans. What ZTE relies on

for its success in the customization road is not only its own powerful technological R&D

strength, but also its unremitting efforts in customization service. With such an attentive

manner, ZTE will still play an important role in the future development of customization

service.

Overview of Smartphone

Definition of a SmartphoneThe appearance of computer has

brought great convenience to our life, and

most importantly it enables our world to

enter a road of artificial intelligence. We have

seen intelligent refrigerators, intelligent TV,

and even intelligent toothbrushes. Mobile

phone, an indispensable part of our daily life,

has been revolutionizing to smartphones. A

smartphone is a mini computer with phone

capability. Like a computer, it is powered

by an operating system for software

expandability. And it offers advanced

features such as Internet.

Distinguishing a Smartphone How should we dist inguish the

differences between a smartphone and a

mobile phone? There are several key points

to it.

Firstly, a smartphone looks a little

bulky. Yet at present more and more

smartphone manufacturers come to realize

the importance of form factor, so with such

judgment criterion we can only distinguish

earlier smartphones.

Secondly, the user interface of a

smartphone can achieve such effects as

dynamic backgrounds, custom icons, and

widgets, which is completely different from

a regular phone, which only supports simple

alternations of icons and backgrounds.

Thirdly, a smartphone allows us to install

and run applications of our choice.

Moreover, a smartphone provides multi-

tasking ability, allowing various applications

to run simultaneously with switching

between one to another. We can also make

a distinction through the hardware, for

example, generally a smartphone comprises

a processor, Random Access Memory

(RAM), permanent storage, etc. while an

ordinary handset does not rely highly on the

hardware.

By He Peng

The mos t common l y u sed operating systems in smartphones usually include Symbian OS, Windows Mobile, Linux, Palm OS, Mac OSX, and Android.

Few misunderstandings about smartphones: Not all large-size cell phones that have a stylus pen and a touchscreen are smartphones and also it is not true that a cell phone with more built-in functions is a smartphone.

PerspectiveTech Frontier

Smartphones with powerful and fast

processors, large memory, touchscreens

and open operating system are becoming

an integral part of our lives. Now, let's take

a closer look at this device which is bringing

entertainment and business to our finger tips.

October 2009

TIPSZTE has made great achievements in Windows Mobile-based handsets and its

WCDMA and CDMA2000 handsets with Windows Mobile and a Qwerty keyboard are in hot sale in markets such as Europe and China. Its Windows Mobile 6.5-powered touchscreen handsets hit the market on October 6, 2009 as one of the first Windows Mobile 6.5 devices. Meanwhile, devoted to the R&D of Linux, ZTE will launch OPhone handsets customized for China Mobile in Q1 2010 and the company will probably release Andriod-based phones in the near future. ZTE has indeed made a great contribution to the smartphone industry.

Knowing a Smartphone Next, we will learn some smartphone usage

principles.

In fact, a newly-bought smartphone does

not have the programs we need. Then, we have

to install software programs compatible with the

operating system. We may also wonder why it

has such a long turn-on time, and why a high-

capacity battery will be running low in only one

day ... So we have to learn how to use it.

Do backups often: The operating principle of

a smartphone is similar to that of a computer, and

it may also encounter viruses, abnormal crash

and other problems; so it is a good habit to take

regular backups; it is convenient to take backup

as you can synchronize data on your phone with

your computer;

Clean up frequently: When we have installed

a number of software programs and theme files,

garbage files will usually be generated under the

system file directory, so we must delete these

applications which are not often used, or clean

up temporary folders often;

Prepare a battery: Smartphone battery

generally has a bigger capacity than a common

cell phone, but it has numerous embedded

auto start software programs, which leads to

lower endurance; therefore, we should prepare a

standby battery.

As a device that takes cares of all our

handheld computing and communication needs,

a smartphone can be used for multitasking,

playing online audio and video files, writing

programs, handling our work, locating our

positions, etc. When Social Networking Sites

(SNS) are popular around the world, you can

also use smartphone to visit popular SNS such

as Facebook and MySpace through Internet or

specially designed software.

After learning such elementary

knowledge, we will find that smartphones

are easy to use, and perhaps we may even

gradually feel their unique charms in the

future.

Symbian OS: Its interface looks like

the hybrid of Windows Mobile and Linux

systems.

Windows Mobi le: The system

is developed by Microsoft. Nearly all

knowledge you have about Windows

computer system is applicable to this

operating system.

Linux: Motorola has been a leader

in the development of Linux-based

handsets. Due to the expandability

reason, Linux has been in the decline.

Since Andriod and China Mobile's Open

Mobile System (OMS) uses Linux as a

basis, Linux is on the rise again.

Palm OS: It is one of the major

handheld operating systems. It has

many powerful business features,

and abundant software programs are

available for Palm-based phones.

Mac OS X: The revolutionary iPhone

is powered by this system.

Android: Currently the most

commonly seen Android phones

are OMS-based ser ies models

independently developed by China

Mobile as well as Google's phones.

Since Android is open-source software,

it can be freely used and modified by

us.

Making Life Light

By Li Yuning

With too many thoughts, we get stuck; with too much burden, we lose

our orientation; with too much pressure, we get depressed; with too

many gaudy clothes, we get fidgeted; with too much greasy food,

we may get fed up.

In a disturbing world, we are always looking for a private land of peace and

purity where we can breathe and live easily. In fact, the pure land is always there,

just beside you. It is the pure land that allows you to relax and the spirits that enable

you to live an easy life. However, how many spirits remain undiscovered?

Light Make-up At present, light make-up is in fashion. I am always

attracted to girls of natural beauty, shining skin and light

smiles. This is due to the power of natural endowment.

Perhaps it is the admiration for natural beauty that leads to

the return of light make-up.

With the return of light make-up, we also witness the

prevalence of "nature" and "translucent" cosmetics. Loose

powder is the lightest cosmetics. The best-quality loose

powder can be made to be as fine as the floating dust in

the air. You may not feel its existence as you close your eyes

and apply it to your face with your fingers. Obviously, top-

quality loose powder is not a burden.

DiorSnow Sublissime Whitening UV Loose Powder

SPF 15 is your optimal choice. The powder texture is super

fine, which keeps your skin bright and beautifully luminous.

Meanwhile, the powder has SPF15/PA++ index and vitamin

C enhanced texture, which acts as a pro-active barrier

against external aggressions.

The Enchantment of Transparency What is transparency? It is a color; the color without colors. It is a floating state in the

vacuum. It is also a state of purity, which you can penetrate.

In our life, we have seen various dazzling colors, and sometimes we just become

numb and irresponsive. Only when we encounter subjects that are pure and flawless we

can be touched. In our deep heart, we reserve a sacred place for purity, which makes our

life pure, light and easy.

I still remember two transparent iPod speakers: AquaTune nano 4G and AquaTune

v2, whose crystal appearance is fashionable and fascinating. Meanwhile, the two IP67

rated waterproof speakers use the silica-gel body, and they are submersible up to one

meter for half an hour. With such crystal products, is our life still so heavy?

The Fascination of smiles "A smile makes you ten years younger". However, can we smile on our life? I am

afraid not. Most people are too concerned about the profit and loss, which is also a major

reason why modern people often get depressed.

People smile when things are going smoothly and become gloomy when facing

adversity, without realizing that smiles are most needed to confront adversity. Smiles are

the key to a light-hearted life.

October 2009

If you are gloomy all day long, then just look at how Jacqueline

Kennedy, the most popular first lady in American history, lived her

life. After the death of her husband, her re-marriage to the Ship King

became a controversial issue. However, is it necessary to sacrifice

one's happiness to conform to the American norm? Which is more

important, a perfect life or an easy life? Jacqueline made her choice:

raise her head, and smile it off.

Light-load Exercise For most people, doing exercises consumes a lot of energy

and is quite unrelated to the light life we advocate. In fact, we are

talking about a "light-load" exercise that can bring fun to our life and

improve the quality of our life.

Light-load exercise emphasizes the process of exercise, is low

in intensity, and therefore produces scanty or very little perspiration.

It regulates the functions of our body and makes our life easier.

Yoga is a well-known sport originating from India, which is also

a light-load exercise. It becomes popular in the world as it seeks to

harmonize the body, mind and soul. It allows us to enjoy peace and

get relaxed.

The practice of yoga will help us to realize that light life is just

around.

Light Diet Light diet is by no means the synonym of tasteless food or

skipping meals; it emphasizes on food's pure and natural taste.

Light diet is actually the purest tastes created by fine

seasonings that people tend to forget. Take a famous seasoning in

French food, the GUÉRANDE salt for example. This sea salt comes

from Brittany France, and it has enjoyed the highest recognition in

the gourmet world for thousands of years. It retains trace minerals

that naturally occur in seawater, including natural iodine and gives off

The Water of Purity The market is filled with various brands of mineral water. We are dazzled

and lose our interest to select. In fact, pure water does not merely relieve us from

thirst; it also supplies us with trace elements without adding to our burden; it

allows us to truly relax.

Speaking of pure water, the earliest mineral water could be the Chateldon

1650 sparkling mineral water, which is know as the water of Louis XIV, probably

France's most famous ruler. Meanwhile, brands of mineral water from New

Zealand such as Waiwera and Antipodes are also rated world-class.

Light Music Tired of the noise of heavy metal or rock? Let's take a break and enjoy some

light music! If heavy metal and rock ‘n’ roll make you high, light music surely gives

you another feeling. It purifies your soul and helps fine tune the rhythm of your

heart.

Speaking of light music, Bandari is the absolute token. In Bandari music, the

sound of flowing water and twittering birds refresh your senses, and gives you a

feeling of returning to nature. For me, the music of Banari is the most natural, the

most graceful and the most heavenly.

Light life does exist! It is life's little pleasures, and the easy attitude

that is demonstrated in every aspect of your life. Life is our own path.

Yet, to make our life light we have to learn how to give up and make

choices.

the scent of violets. It is wonderful for seasoning meat.

Speaking of light diet, it is necessary to mention the light Japanese cuisine.

Japanese cuisine heavily relies on mild, low-calorie seasonings, such as Wasabi,

kelp and grapefruit sauce. Sushi, salmon and soba noodles all preserve their

pristine flavors, bringing us a perfect light diet.
