OCTOBER 15, 2017 28 TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME D ear Parishioners, Autumn and the month of October is upon us, it is a good time in the year of the Church to focus on pray- ing the Rosary and especially inter- ceding on behalf of the pro-life cause! The pro-life movement is one of the gems of American Catholicism, it was born here in the USA and slowly has spread to other continents in recent years. For many years, only in the USA could one find such fervor, prayer, and public witness on behalf of the unborn! The March For Life in Washington DC, or as I like to call it “the best kept secret in the media” draws more than 200,000 people and God-willing, will again include a youth group representing our parish in 2018 as well. Locally, a good and peaceful way to witness for life, is at the 40 Days for Life campaign going on right now in front of Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in Ann Arbor. One can sign up for an hour of prayer on their website, and hold a sign, or simply pray a rosary. Such witness is important and effective; babies are saved when mothers change their minds, and the society at large is not allowed to forget this grave sin going on daily in our country. The rosary, is one of my favorite prayers, and one that I and many struggle with from time to time. Traditionally, our Lady appeared to St. Dominic in 1206 after Dominic was praying and performing penances for conversion of heretics without much success, and gave the saint the rosary as a ‘mighty weapon’ to use instead. Great Christian victories have been attributed to the Rosary ever since: the Albigensian heretics were converted or defeated, the naval victory over Islamic forces at Lepanto in 1571 and other battles. Many private individuals report receiving great favors and graces through the regular prayer of the rosary. To get the most out of the rosary, it is not necessary to be 100% mentally focused on each mystery of the decade every second of the long prayer. Instead, I have found, that using the repetitions of the ‘Hail Mary’s’ is a wonderful way to calm the mind and spirit and open oneself to contemplation. That contemplation can be on the mystery of the decade or even on another holy topic that the Holy Spirit suggests: a healing of a memory, a grace received, a sacrament. Even though at times the rosary may seem like a chore, especially if we are praying with little ones in our families, the benefits are real and stretch long into the future. I have often prayed the rosary more out of routine and with little consolation, only to experience a wonderful grace with the last “Hail Mary”! Children who grow up with the rosary, praying it as a family together, are given a tremendous gift. They are being taught how to spend time wisely avoiding the temptations of screen time and other modern amuse- ments and at the same time are developing a habit that may be life- saving for their future spiritual lives. Now a couple words on the ‘goings on’ at our parish! Your voices have been heard: we have decided to expand our donut Sundays from once to twice month- ly: every 1st and 3rd Sunday will be donut Sunday! This will allow our TLM Latin Mass parishioners to experience the joys of donuts on the Sundays when the EF Mass is not held. It will also help build commu- nity and fellowship at our parish, especially if we reach out and talk to someone new or different from our usual ‘group’ at the hall! Donuts are not cheap, you may be surprised but I’ve been signing checks between $300-$400 for each donut Sunday. The money from the donut basket doesn’t even come close to covering it! We want to ensure we have the best donut, but also to be prudent, so I am ask- ing everyone to limit themselves to ONE donut per person (adult, child, youth etc). Also, if you are eating you should be dropping $omething in the donut free-will offering. Nobody wants to see the quality of donuts decrease because of the prices so please let’s do our part! We are grateful to the Hayes NOTES FROM FATHER TOM Continued on inside cover

D ear Parishioners, Autumn and the month of October is upon us, it is a good time in the year of the Church to focus on pray-ing the Rosary and especially inter-ceding on behalf of the pro-life cause! The pro-life movement is one of the gems of American Catholicism, it was born here in the USA and slowly has spread to other continents in recent years. family for sponsoring the donuts in the past (picking them up, and serving). I have asked them to continue doing so once a month , while the other donut Sunday will be sponsored by a group from the parish: Knights of Columbus, Ladies Society, Youth Group, etc… Let’s all get behind this very sweet effort and support our donut apostolate! I’ve been asked to give an update on the front steps of the church. As you can see, the main work has been accomplished, we are still waiting on installation of railings (they are being fabricated as we speak) for the middle of the stairs, the ramp, around the stairs leading to the basement of the church and the steps to the sacris-ty at the back. (It’s a lot of iron railing, and we have gone to great lengths to purchase a beautiful iron wrought design, which is in accord with the historic aspect of the church). We are also looking into purchasing some year-round benches to be placed in

front of the church. Finally, there will be new asphalt placed on part of the Northfield Church Road to help with water drainage and hopefully eliminate the perennial puddle in front of the church. It has been a lot of work and a bit of a learning curve for me adminis-tering this project. I am glad for the help of the finance committee as well as many others who gave their input: including Mrs. Debbie Welch, Mr. Mark Westhoven, Mrs Noelle, a friend of Mrs. Crystal Russell, and the astute Catholic project manager, Mr. Richard Deleruyelle, from O’Neil Construc-tion. I am very grateful to Jack Kennedy, a long time parishioner of Old St. Pat’s, who graciously donated the money for the brick pavers and Celtic cross in front of the church. You may remember that I asked for someone to help pay for this in a bulletin article, and Gladys, Jack’s wife, read this to her dying husband. One of his last wishes was to contribute to the parish he loved and served for so

many years. John or “Jack” has been living in Chelsea for the last couple years of his life, no longer being able to attend church. His family, is one of the founding Irish families of Old St. Pat’s and their name can be found on two of the stained glass windows on St. Joseph’s side of the nave. For many decades, Jack was a faithful contributor and volunteer at our parish events. Many, many people turned out for his funeral and his body was buried in our cemetery. It was a beautiful grace to have him sponsor the brick pavers and Celtic cross in front of the Church which adds so much to the beauty of our entrance. You may see his name engraved in a commemora-tive brick beneath the Celtic cross, and this can be a an opportunity to say a quick prayer for his soul. Keep praying the rosary, watch those donuts, and keep praying for the pro-life cause and movement! ~Fr Tom
