26 The Mail on Sunday October 14, 2007 By Claudia Joseph UDDLED together in a bar in the Portuguese town of Leiria, the charis- matic football coach Jose Mourinho and his attrac- tive mistress Elsa Sousa sipped their coffee and talked in hushed tones. Despite still being married to his wife Tami, his childhood sweetheart and mother of his two young children, the future man- ager of Chelsea and his fashion- able girlfriend barely merited a second glance. All the locals believed he was sepa- rated from his wife: after all, he lived in an apartment near the club’s sta- dium, while his wife remained at the family home in the exclusive suburb of Setubal, near Lisbon, where he grew up. He and Elsa, who had a designer boutique in the town centre, had been dating for three months, were virtu- ally living together and were regu- lars at local bars and restaurants. But their conversation that day in January 2002, was to have a pro- found effect on Mourinho’s future career – launching him into the lime- light as one of Portugal’s most successful coaches and eventually leading to his £4 million-a-year contract as the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ at Chelsea. He had arrived at the first division Uniao de Leiria football club the pre- vious year, after working as Sir Bobby Robson’s translator when the Englishman was manager at Sport- ing Lisbon, Porto and Barcelona. Elsa recalls how, on the day, Mourinho picked her up from work and took her to a ‘nice cosy bar’. ‘We sat down at a table and he talked to me about what was going on in his football life. ‘He told me that he had had two offers, from Benfica and Porto, and asked me what I thought about them. I told him that I would prefer him to go to Porto because it was the club I supported. ‘He said he trusted my instinct and would choose Porto because of me. Thanks to me he went to Porto and became that big famous coach.’ With her slight frame, long blonde hair and designer wardrobe, Elsa, 38, looks like a typical footballer’s girl- friend but she speaks several lan- guages, has none of the brashness of the British WAGs and has always remained discreet about their rela- tionship, which lasted more than a year and ended five years ago. Now, just weeks after Mourinho was sacked by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, she has decided to talk for the first time about the man who duped her into believing he was going to divorce the wife he met as a teenager and married in 1980. She says: ‘The only reason I’m talking now is because he is back in Portugal which means everybody will start gossiping again.’ Now, with Mourinho back in his £3 million family home, complete with a swimming pool, in Setubal, she says he is a weak man, who sacrificed their love for the sake of his family. It was in July 2001 when Elsa first set eyes on Mourinho, then 38, as he was walking into a restaurant in Leiria where she was lunching with a girlfriend. ‘I was sitting at a table in a corner and was coming to the end of my meal when I looked up and spotted him and he smiled at me. ‘I had no idea who he was but I knew he was new in town because everybody in Leiria knew each other. ‘Mourinho started going around with my friend Zuela, a footballer, who was trained by Mourinho but was not in the first team. ‘They always seemed to be in the same cafes and restaurants as me. He never talked to me – he just looked at me but I was flattered by the attention.’ A couple of months later, Mourinho visited Elsa’s shop. ‘He introduced himself to me. He used the formal mode of address in Portugal and said, “You are a very beautiful woman. Can I look at you?’’ I said, “Yes.”’ It was Zuela who gave Mourinho her phone number, and he kept tex- ting her. ‘The first time he texted me, he said, “You are beautiful.” He signed it JM.’ A couple of weeks later, he began telephoning her. ‘After that he would call me all the time, day and night,’ Elsa says. Their first date was towards the end of September, but as a foursome with Zuela and a girlfriend of Elsa’s. ‘We met halfway and then went the rest of the way in Mourinho’s car,’ recalls Elsa. ‘It was a black convertible Volvo with leather seats. He was always showing off. It was his way. ‘Mourinho was like that, as if he was saying, “I’m Mourinho. I’m the special one. I’m God.” I wasn’t par- ticularly impressed. I’m used to nice cars but I liked his arrogance. ‘That’s what got my attention. His confidence was very attractive. He is very proud of himself and he would compliment himself a lot. He would say, “I’m very good. I’m the best. I know I can do it. I know what I am worth.” He believed in himself. He knew what he wanted. ‘The only thing he didn’t know was what he wanted in his private life. He was like a genius, who can only con- centrate on one part of his life.’ On that first date, Elsa says, they had just one drink – a Baileys each – but talked all night. She adds: ‘When he dropped me home about midnight, he told me that he was separated from his wife because he was not happy with her. I am sure he was telling me the truth. ‘He wasn’t wearing a wedding ring and I had no reason to disbelieve him. I am sure the only reason he was not divorced was because of his family. He said that I didn’t deserve to be fooled around. ‘After that we went out almost every night. We used to go back to his flat for a drink. It was a simple three-bedroom apartment, which was owned by the club. Two of the bedrooms were always locked. He didn’t have many things there, just his clothes and a few papers and CDs. There were no photographs anywhere. It was like a hotel room. We didn’t really spend much time in the apartment. We had a few things in the fridge but we always went out for meals. I can’t imagine him cooking. ‘We didn’t even drink at home. When we were there, he used to light the fire and put on some music. He had about six or seven CDs. ‘We used to listen to the Eagles song Hotel California, which I liked, and Sting. Most of the time, we listened to a radio station that played Ameri- can golden oldies and romantic ballads. That was the music which soothed us.’ A month later, after dinner with friends at their favourite restaurant, they made love for the first time. Elsa says: ‘He lit the fire, put on a ballad, and told me that he had fallen in love with me. He was very gentle, very sweet and attentive towards me. I stayed the night and didn’t move out. ‘After that he would always drive me to work, like a husband,’ she added, giggling. ‘We would stop at a newspaper kiosk and he would buy the sports papers A Bola and the Record and then we would have breakfast together if we H EXCLUSIVE The former Chelsea manager’s secret lover talks for the first time about the man she regarded as a husband ‘He liked showing off – it’s just his way’ LOVE MATCH: Mourinho’s former mistress Elsa Sousa. ‘I liked his arrogance,’ she says.
