J. N. Burnett Newsletter
Newsletter #2 October 2015
Dear Parents and Guardians:
Our semester 1 interim reports and parent/teacher conferences have been completed. It is important for students and their families to monitor the progress in all the courses through goal-‐setting, and discussion about the overall strengths and areas in need of improvement.
October was a busy month at Burnett, with many clubs planning different events. On October 22nd a group of our students attended the We Day celebration at Rogers arena. Around 20,000 students from schools throughout British Columbia came together for an inspiring day, listening to different speakers on various social responsibility topics. I am proud to see so many of our students involved in these types of clubs. To end the month of October, our Student Council planned a great Halloween dance, with well over 200 students coming together for a fabulous evening. The month ended with many staff and students coming to school on Friday demonstrating school spirit by dressing up in a variety of costumes. Well done, Breakers!!
AN IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING MIDTERM REPORT CARD DATE: as a result of a planned 5 day shutdown of our provincial computer system, we have to delay issuing our semester 1 midterm report card from November 17 to November 20. Parents and guardians are asked to take note of this change.
I would also like to inform parents that we have partnered with the Canadian Diabetes association and placed a clothing donation box in our parking lot. This non-‐profit organization is prominent in raising awareness about diabetes, a disease affecting many Canadians including young people. Parents and guardians can drop off used clothing bags at any time and your help is much appreciated.
Please take a minute to read about other highlights and happenings in our J.N. Burnett school community.
Sincerely, B. Wiens Principal
SCHOOL PARKING LOT AND SAFETY
As it is every year, parking lot safety continues to be a concern at Burnett. Unless it is absolutely necessary, please have your child walk to and from school to help us combat the congestion in the parking lot. For students who need to drive to school, please remember that there are many people on foot and bicycles in our parking lot, so be sure to drive with due care and attention at a slow speed.
INTRAMURAL VOLLEYBALL

REMEMBRANCE DAY CEREMONIES
We are busily planning two large assemblies that will take place in the large gym. Due to fire regulations, we are not permitted to have the whole school in the gym at one time. Each assembly will be approximately 30 minutes long and will take place on Tuesday, November 10th. We encourage parents to attend and will set aside a seating area for all visitors who are able to join us. At the time of writing this newsletter, plans for the ceremonies have just begun. The first ceremony will begin at approximately 9:50 and the second one at approximately 10:45. Those parents planning to join us may wish to call the school the week of November 2 to confirm the exact times of the assemblies. This year’s ceremony will be a result of the contributions of many students from a variety of subject areas. We will be collecting contributions for the Headstones of deceased veterans who do not have these markers. Collections will occur throughout the week and we encourage all students to do their part. Poppies will be handed out just before the ceremony on November 10.
TAKE OUR KIDS TO WORK DAY
GRADE 9 STUDENTS This year “Take Our Kids To Work” day is Wednesday, November 4th. This is a National Day started over 10 years ago that involves Grade 9 students across the country. All Grade 9 students are encouraged to participate by going to work with their parents to job shadow for the day. Students may also job shadow a relative, family friend or volunteer host. This is an opportunity for students to get a sense of what it is like to be part of the work world and think about what they might like to do in the future. If you will be taking your Grade 9 child out of school on November 6 to participate in this day, please fill out the paperwork (available in the office or on line at http://www.thelearningpartnership.ca/document.doc?id=416) and inform the school at 604-668-6478.
