IMPORTANT NOTICE OF LATE RETURN

If your child is not returning to J.N. Burnett Secondary School in September, or if he/she will be returning later than September 5, 2017, you MUST advise the school office at 604-668-6478, otherwise the student’s name will be removed from the roster.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING TEXTBOOKS

During the first week of 2nd semester, students were issued textbooks by their teachers. This is just a reminder that it is the student’s responsibility to take good care of all the textbooks that he or she is issued. At the time the textbook is issued, the number printed in each of the books is scanned and recorded. At the end of the semester, students are expected to return the textbook that they were issued, in good condition. Textbooks are very expensive and parents should be aware that students would be required to pay for lost or damaged textbooks at the end of the year. It is important to emphasize that students are required to hand in the textbook that has the number that they were issued, not simply a textbook that they may have ended up with. We do not wish to unfairly charge someone for a missing textbook they are unable to return because someone else has it. Students who have lost or damaged their textbooks will be given assessments that must be paid by Friday, June 16th to the Business Assistant. Students who have outstanding fees after that date will not receive their yearbook on June 28th when others receive them. Any students who still have outstanding debts in September will not be issued any further textbooks or permitted to participate in any activities for which monies must be collected, until all outstanding debts are cleared up.

SCIENCE WORLD

Going to Science World really opened our eyes. They showed us that there is much needed improvement when taking care of our world. They offered us a meal that was made of food that would normally be thrown away even though it's completely edible. There was a discussion during the meal about the world's problems and how we can try to fix them. In the beginning of the event, they held a game of charades with a twist of being environmentally friendly. It was loads of fun and our personal favourite of the night. By: Ms. Jessa's Science 8 students (Cameron, Melissa, Kristen, Victoria, Elizabeth and Linda)

KWANTLEN POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY JUNIOR PHYSICS AND

ENGINEERING COMPETITION

The five of us attended the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Junior Physics and Engineering Competition (JPEC) on Saturday, April 29. We participated in the Compressed Air Car, Helium Balloon, and surprise mystery building events and, along the way, encountered many obstacles: our prized helium balloon popped at the last possible moment, and the battery of our motor detached. Yet, we persevered in the face of adversity. With unwavering determination, we sought out solutions, even driving to Steveston to find another balloon to resolve the desperate situation. Through our collaborative team dynamic, unwillingness to surrender, and passion for science, we won third!

ADVENTURES WITH A BIOCHEMIST

On Friday, May 19, I had the incredible opportunity of working with Evelyn Sun, a graduate biochemist at UBC and a former student of Ms. Jessa. After a short tour of the Hancock laboratory, I was introduced to Evelyn’s research in the genetics of microorganisms. This included a quick pipetting tutorial as well as a lesson on the extraction and cloning of DNA. During the rest of the day, I was taught many new and fascinating practices. I learned how to operate a centrifuge, perform a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) procedure, and prepare “mini preps” for molecular analysis. All in all, I had a wonderful experience, and I really enjoyed my time exploring this particular aspect of science and university life. Written by Horman Qian

MY STEPS I HAVE TAKEN AND ARE TAKING TO BECOME A POLICE OFFICER To become a Police Officer is no easy task. If you're like me and are starting young, here are some tips and opportunities you can do to help you in the future and to see if this career is right for you. 1. Fitness Firstly, start your fitness training as soon as possible. Focus mainly on your cardiovascular system so that in the future you won't have to work as hard because you started early. Weights are very important too! 2. BE CAREFUL! Nowadays with social media, it is very easy to hurt your chances with future jobs because of the digital footprint you leave behind every time you send, receive or like anything. This is very important because when applying to a Police Agency they will look at everything; all your social media accounts, your friends, and your family. This can hurt you because if you're not careful about what you post, like or who you are friends with, they can and will decline your application to join the force. I CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH! BE CAREFUL WITH EVERYTHING YOU DO ONLINE! They will see it. 3. The RCMP Youth Squad The Youth Squad is a great opportunity for you to get a true insight about the RCMP and all the other specialties within the RCMP. Once a week, every Thursday from 6-9pm for 10 weeks, you will get all the information you'll need to see if this career is right for you (Grade 10-12). 4. The RCMP Youth Academy If you want the best hands on experience about what being a Police Officer is truly like and you would like a little taste of DEPOT, this 8-day long Academy at Still Wood Camp will show you everything you need to know. Without giving any spoilers, let’s just say this was the hardest week but the best week of my life and a week I will forever remember. The Youth Academy confirmed that law enforcement is what I want to do with my life. Be physically and mentally fit. (Grade 10-12). 5. Grade 12 Law Next year I will be taking this class to further learn about Canadian Law. This class will be great for you to get an inside look into how court and court documents work. This class will also be useful for anyone who is wanting to become a Lawyer. 6. Volunteer Volunteering is a very important aspect if you want to become a Police Officer. They want to see that you are involved in your community and helping others. Volunteer anywhere and everywhere and volunteer as soon as possible! 7. Steveston Community Police Station This point ties into point #3 about volunteering. This will be the best volunteering opportunity for you. Here you can do various volunteering opportunities such as Speed Watch, Lock Out Auto Crime, Stolen Auto Recovery, Volunteer Bike Patrol and Location & Coverage Area. All of these are highly recognizable between all Police detachments and is a great chance for you to get know the other Police Officers. For more information google "Steveston Community Police Station" and it will be the first link. (18 years old). 8. Justice Institute of British Columbia After graduating High School, I am planning to enroll at the Justice Institute of British Columbia and take a two-year Diploma in Law Enforcement Studies. Post-Secondary is not necessary to become a Police Officer but I want to because this will give me a head start on what I will go through at DEPOT. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Mrs. Jessa has all my contact information and remember, work hard, be safe, be smart and you can accomplish anything you work hard enough for. - By: Vaughn Gordon

ARC Newsletter May 2017

Rescued! Congratulations to the Staiger family of Burnaby on their recent adoption of Toklo (formerly Cheng-Cheng).

Toklo was our first rescue from Taiwan. He arrived in the fall and was fostered by the Staigers. Toklo is nervous

around new people and dogs, but his family has worked tirelessly to socialize him. He is now a regular at his local

dog park and his family is learning to manage him when he meets strangers. ARC appreciates the effort that foster

families put into learning to train and socialize rescued dogs. If you are interested in becoming an ARC foster,

please contact Margaret or Ruth for more information.

ARC Raffle We raised $500 in the ARC winter raffle this year. Thank you to everyone who purchased a ticket. Our

runner-up prize winners were: Linda Sakai, Janis Tancowny, and Aidan Galan. Special congratulations to

our grand prize winner, Michelle Zhou, who won an artisan paw print clock, Border Collie needlepoint,

and dinner at the Steveston Seafood house. She is pictured here visiting ARC to collect her prize.

The money raised in this raffle was donated to two of our favourite charities, Greyhaven Exotic Bird

Sanctuary and German Shepherd Rescue of British Columbia.

SAINTS On spring break, ARC representatives visited SAINTS animal rescue (Senior Animals in Need Today). SAINTS

is located on a farm in Mission, and rescues farm and domestic animals. Most of the animals at SAINTS are

seniors who have had difficulty finding homes through typical shelters and rescues due to their age and, in some

cases, special medical requirements. SAINTS offers volunteer-led tours every Saturday and Sunday at 11:00 a.m.

We were impressed by the level of care the animals receive, and the attention given to their unique needs. A

pot-bellied pig who prefers to live indoors enjoys napping with his canine friends in the house while other pot-

bellied pigs have chosen a life in the farmyard (with the occasional Cheetos snack thrown in). If you have an

opportunity to visit this wonderful place, please check out their website: http://www.saintsrescue.ca/ and consider taking a tour.

ARC PawPrints Fundraiser ARC is offering personalized pads of paper for sale. We make solid print or watermark print pads of 8.5 X

5.25 inches (two 50-sheet pads) for $12. Our sample shows a watermark image of Ruth’s dog, with no

printing. We can add printing (eg. “From the desk of… ) or the image can be non-transparent and made to

the size and position on the page that you request. At this time, printing is available in black and white

only. We can do large paper pads (one 8.5 by 11 pad of 50 sheets) or four smaller pads (4 X 5.25 of 25

sheets each) for the same price. Personalized paper pads make great gifts. Just send us a jpeg picture of the

pet (or any special photo) along with the any wording you require to Margaret or Ruth.
