North Branch Library isthe place to be for cre-ative types Friday night

and Saturday. The branch will host the Bet-

ter Denton Hackathon and 24-Hour Comics Day, both of whichstart at 5 p.m. on Friday and endon 5 p.m. Saturday. Together, theevents make up the Denton Pub-lic Library’s “Up All Night” event.

The Better Denton Hackath-on is for anyone with an idea —be it technological, commercialor cultural — to either team up

with others to develop their cre-ation or work on it individuallythrough the night. Teams willdemonstrate their concepts at 3p.m. Saturday. Judges will deter-mine the winning idea, and thegroup or developer behind it willwin a trophy.

The comics event is part ofthe International 24 Hour Com-

Both Hackathon and comicscreators have to bring their ownmaterials — art supplies, handtools, laptop computers and per-sonal hygiene items. The librarywill provide coffee, water andsome snacks, but participants

can bring their own “survival”snacks. “Up All Night” will be alock-in event between 11 p.m.and 9 a.m., according to a libraryannouncement.

The Winter’s Tale chroni-cles the fallout of a king’sgossip. The Shakespear-

ean drama finds a king and hisfamily floundering in the shrap-nel 16 years from the moment hefalsely accused his wife of infidel-ity with his best friend.

Denton’s Sundown Collabo-rative Theatre presents an adap-tation of the play using the musicfrom the Icelandic band SigurRos and Shakespeare’s words. With music and poetry, the com-pany examines how the charac-ters — King Leontes of Sicily; hisaccused but virtuous wife, Her-mione; Polixenes, the King ofBohemia and Leontes’ boyhoodfriend — restore their lives. Rec-onciliation seems probablewhen Leontes’ daughter, Perdita, and Florizel, the son of Polix-enes, get engaged.

The company opens the playin Denton, with performances at8 p.m. Friday through Sundayand Oct. 10-12 at Green SpaceArts Collective, 529 Malone St.The company closes the run inDallas, with performances at 8p.m. Oct. 17-19 at Rockin’ Re-hearsal, 1430 Regal Row, Suite340.

MOVIES

Sympathies change, andthen they change again in thedynamic Gone Girl, a twisting-turning new crime-thriller fromDavid Fincher. The heralded di-rector builds an engrossing, es-calating mystery before unveil-ing a few surprises that pull therug out from everyone.

Gillian Flynn supplies thescreenplay from her own novel. The writer has created a storywith hidden corners and deep

alleys for her characters, not let-ting the audience fully under-stand the complete story untilthey have the complete story.Reportedly, Flynn slightlychanged her ending at Fincher’srequest, so even readers of thenovel might find a surprise. Ornot.

Fincher worked again withhis regular cinematographer JeffCronenweth, and the film bene-fits from the director’s knownhabit of shooting multiple takes. The overtime results in a pair offine performances from the twolead actors, Ben Affleck and Ro-samund Pike. Without suchstrength at its core, Gone Girlcould easily falter and slide intostrident melodrama.

Fincher follows his story, al-

ways jumping to where neededto string out the mystery andsustain the tension. Dominantscreen time falls to sad-sackNick Dunne (Affleck). The for-mer New York resident has re-turned to his Missouri home-town with his Harvard-educat-ed wife, Amy (Pike), only to hitnear bottom.

Fincher chronicles Nick andAmy’s faltering marriage, mostlythrough narration from Amy’sdiary. But, like Nabokov’s unreli-able narrator, Amy proves elu-sive with the truth, even to her-self.

The main plot revolvesaround Amy’s disappearance, initially treated as a missing per-son investigation. Friends andneighbors rally around Nick, un-

til it increasingly appears he mayhave murdered his wife. The in-vestigating detectives (KimDickens and Patrick Fugit) be-gin friendly but then turn nastyand suspicious.

Flynn’s story takes Nick froma public object of pity to one vil-ified by the tabloid media, aswell as his friends and Amy’sfamily. Nick can only find refugewith his twin sister Margo (Car-rie Coon).

At this point, Gone Girl takes

a surprising turn best not re-vealed. The twist, however, pro-vides a fuller look at Amy, whilealso, not coincidentally, provingonce again that Pike is an ac-complished actress.

Fincher’s demand for height-ened technical polish and per-formance-excellence showsthroughout, not just with theleads but also with Coon and inimportant supporting rolesfrom Tyler Perry and Neil Pat-rick Harris.

Fincher uses them all toweave a gripping story filledwith unexpected drama.

NOW PLAYINGThe Boxtrolls ( ) Oregonanimation studio Laika’s 3-D stop-motion film is set in the British villageof Cheesebridge, whose supposedscourge is the Boxtrolls, little noc-turnal creatures who wear discardedboxes like a turtle shell and scavengefor mechanical parts. Your chance at ‘Eternity’

Fathom Events

It doesn’t seem possible that From Here to Eternity could get more sultry than the film’s iconic passionate kiss on thebeaches of Pearl Harbor. But Tony Award-winning musical-maker Tim Rice adapted the film for the stage, and if reports aretrue, audiences had to fan themselves through the big numbers. A filmed version of the musical — about young Army men

in 1941 and the women they love — was made of this spring’s production on London’s West End, starring Darius Campbell asFirst Sgt. Milton Warden and Rebecca Thornhill as Karen Holmes. The company men doff their shirts and the women playpeek-a-boo with pinup-style curves while the band plays on. Fathom Events screens the musical at 7:30 p.m. today at theatersincluding the Denton Cinemark, 2825 Wind River Lane. A repeat screening is at 7 p.m. Oct. 9. The musical is rated R for adultsituations. For tickets, visit www.fathomevents.com.

When a mutual friend of Fishboy founder EricMichener and writer, actress, comedian andmusician Charlyne Yi (Paper Heart, Knocked

Up) said Yi was looking for DIY spaces for a tour, Miche-ner knew just the place.

occasionally leaky) space at thelocal pizzeria at 9 p.m. Monday.Fishboy opens for the duo.

Michener was quick to ex-plain that he’s not met or talkedwith the actress yet. He justhooked her up with a place thatmet her description.

“She preferred a DIY spaceand not a club,” Michener said.

In Michener’s estimation, thebasement fit the bill. The musi-cian has played solo sets in thebasement, and his band, Fish-boy, has played there too.

“I like that it’s an intimate set-ting and I like that it’s fairly easyto set up,” he said. “And theshows are generally donation, sothere’s not as much pressure tomake the club money, I suppose. Not a lot of pressure to bring the

people out.”One of the first shows Miche-

ner saw in Denton was at J&J’sabout 15 years ago. He learnedabout one of the best perks of thespace when he played there.

“They give you free pizza if youplay, and it’s delicious,” he said.

Fishboy opens for SacredDestinies with its newest lineup— Scarlett Wright, Grahm Rob-inson and Samuel Escalante. The band will play some songsfrom its upcoming album, AnElephant, and from the band’searlier records.

An Elephant is an albumand a comic about the ghost of aperturbed pachyderm electro-cuted in 1903. The album imag-ines that the elephant, Topsy, gets to avenge her death. Thom-as Edison used 6,600 volts ofelectricity to kill the elephant ina publicity stunt meant to scarethe public away from using al-ternating currents.

An Elephant will be releasedin November, but it’s availablefor streaming online now.

Michener talked about his ap-proach to music, which is oftenincludes drawing comics that riffon the songs or elaborate onthem. Fishboy often makes hap-py music about serious things.

“I'm really aware of songwrit-ing cliches,” Michener said. “And

so I am aware of what a perfectsong, for me, is. It’s usually acombination of things. I don’treally want to write in first per-son about myself unless it’s acharacter’s point of view.

“I love songs that make youso happy you cry. I like havingthat challenge. I like creatingemotion in something thatwouldn’t maybe have a story.”

Michener is Fishboy’s leadvocalist, and he has a knack forwordplay — which the artist saiddoesn’t necessarily come natu-rally.

“It’s hard for me to write lyr-ics unless I’m sitting there, working at it for a while,” Miche-ner said. “Trying to set limits formyself in that way is what I needto be able to write lyrics. We have

a new song on the new albumcalled ‘Totes.’ There is a word inevery line that has a long ‘oh’sound. That’s the kind of thing Itry to do.”

Michener said the full bandwill play on Monday. SacredDestinies has just one song post-ed on its Bandcamp.com page, but “Storks and Mosquitos” im-plies that the two bands are agood match.

“I think it’s cool that she’s go-ing on this super-duper DIYtour,” Michener said. “We’ll stopat around 11. J&J’s closes at mid-night, and it’s going to be a Mon-day, but it should be a fun show.”
