081612 Cafe Du Luxe is celebrat-

ing another year in busi-ness with its third Birth-

day Bash on Saturday. Festivities are slated to take

place from 6 to 10 p.m. at therestaurant at 3101 UnicornLake Blvd.

Throughout the eveningthere will be a half-priced spe-cial on all food and drink pur-chases, live music, free coffeeand tea, cupcakes and limited-edition T-shirts for every 10thcustomer.

Cafe Du Luxe, owned byDavid Carles and JanaEtheridge, opened in July2009 as a coffee and wine cafe.It was originally designed as afranchise prototype, Carlessaid.

In the last three years, hesaid, they’ve built a strong, loyal and growing customerbase. He described the busi-ness’s first three years as excit-ing, gratifying and challenging.

The biggest change to CafeDu Luxe in that time, Carlessaid, was how “we perceivedourselves and what we offered

the clientele.” He said what theowners learned is that peoplewanted a restaurant, so thebusiness has been refashionedto become restaurant-orientedwith an expansion of its foodmenu.

“We’re an upscale coffee andwine bistro,” he said. “We’re notyour average restaurant.”

Carles said the birthday bash

is an opportunity to celebratethe cafe’s accomplishments andits customers.

“It helps us to give back tothe people that have been loyalto us,” he said.

The cafe is known to many asDenton’s best-kept secret,Carles said, but now, “We’d likethe secret to get out.”

Texas Woman’s University art professors invited artists they

admire to join the School of Arts’ biennial exhibition “Combi-

nations.” The show opens Aug. 27 in the East and West galleries

in the TWU Art Building, at Oakland Street and Pioneer Circle. Faculty

members invited artists who have influenced their work, artists

they’ve shown with before and artists who have mentored them to

submit work to the show. The show features an array of media — tra-

ditional painting, experimental video, sculpture — and gives visitors a

broad view of the scope and variety of art being done by the faculty

and guests, both in the community and in the classrooms. The exhibit

runs through Sept. 20. A reception will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 4.

Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday when the

university is in session. Galleries are open on weekends by appoint-

ment only.

Danny Rush’s latest keeps it quiet

Danny Rush and the Designated Drivers are sure to play some choice tracks from the band’s latest album, Brown and

Blue, on Friday at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios.

Danny Rush and theDesignated Driversmight tie one on dur-

ing the band’s gig Fridaynight at Rubber Gloves.

If not, the audience will bebuzzing on the slow, smoothmusic the band makes underthe leadership of Denton’sDaniel Folmer — even if it isoccasionally is a bit behindthe beat.

Danny and the Drivers justreleased the alt-country full-length Brown and Blue.

You can take the album anumber of ways.

You could take it as a song-book written — in longhand— by a chivalrous countrygentleman who is doing hisbest to aim his anger at theone who left him rather thanat the culprit: the narrator’srecurring emotional impo-tence.

Brown and Blue could alsobe heard as poetry by a guy

who is able to fixate fully onmore than one object ofaffection, but is useless atkeeping secrets.

It’s just as likely that thealbum continues Folmer’sadroit way of giving countrymusic relevance to those whodon’t love the form. Song bysong, Brown and Blue is arefreshing take on the tear-in-my-beer country ballad. This time Folmer and hisbuddies demolish every parti-cle of slide-guitar sentimen-tality — the kind that cantake down a folk outfit — andkeep just what each songcalls for.

In “Without You,” the slideis as spare as an upright bassand the keyboard is restrainedand imperfect. “Brakeman”finds our narrator playing thepart typically occupied by a

woman, with the hero of thestory in an empty kitchen, singing: “I made dinner forthe both of us and ate it allalone/And I won’t be yourbutler anymore.”

Folmer uses his signaturesoft tenor. Band membersJustin Collins, Chris Garver,Tony Ferraro and Taylor Simsnever force their way in, butfill in the brushstrokes thatmake Brown and Blue, thetitle song and the album, aneeded wellspring of quiet.Quiet, but neither affectednor schmaltzy. The har-monies are as easy as theensemble.

If you need to come downa little from the Kyle Parkshow at the North TexasState Fair and Rodeo, DannyRush and the DesignatedDrivers are just the ticket.

Sounds like: all of yourdepression and anxiety platedin smooth chrome, or the act

on a bill between the HopeTrust and Don Williams.

In summing up everythingthat took place during theevents seen in The Imposter, aperversely entertaining newdocumentary, one of the mainparticipants nails it. She says:“It was starting to get ridicu-lous.”

The Imposter examines abizarre series of events thatoccurred mostly in the 1990s.Why it is just now grist for afull-length documentary mightbe because no one found a wayto tell the story.

Documentarian Bart Laytontackles the subject of the disap-pearance of Nicholas Barclay, although he cheats by usingfrequent re-enactments. Butthat’s almost understandablebecause, at the time, no onecould foresee the consequencesof Barclay’s disappearance andhis miraculous reappearance —of sorts.

Thirteen-year-old NicholasBarclay left his San Antonio

home in 1994. Maybe it wasafter an argument with hismother and maybe not. Amongmany other things in the docu-mentary, that fact remains fluid.

He eventually became one ofthe country’s many missingchildren, sought out by author-ities. From this period, Laytonincludes some still photos anda few home movies fromNicholas’ mother, BeverlyDollarhide.

Three years later, someonepurporting to be Nicholasturns up in Linares, Spain. Thisis “The Imposter,” the man whosits in front of Layton’s camerasand relates the story of how hewent missing (he was kid-napped and sexually abused, hesays), how someone found him,and how he was ready to goback home.

As the imposter tells hisstory, a viewer immediately

notices that, unlike the blond,blue-eyed Nicholas, this otherNicholas has brown hair, darkeyes, and speaks English with aFrench accent. But in 1997,Nicholas’ family just cared thathe had allegedly been foundand wanted to come home.

His sister, the oft-interviewedCarey Gibson, speaks to himand then flies to Spain toretrieve him after authoritiesthere tested him for authentici-ty.

He returns, as The Impostertells us, and before long, theFBI is called in, many ques-tions are raised, and everythingseems in flux. During it all,Gibson and Dollarhide looklike they are indulging in wishfulfillment. At one point,Dollarhide says about that peri-od: “My main goal in life wasnot to think.”

But if this isn’t Nicholas, where is he and who is theimposter? To answer thosequestions, a canny privateinvestigator shows up, the FBIgets a tip from Interpol, andDNA and fingerprints comeinto play.

The solutions may not be sat-isfying, but they are certainlyentertaining.

COVER STORY

Dusty tunes and true gritBy Lucinda BreedingFeatures Editor

When it came time for the JoshAbbott Band to put out its lat-est full-length album, Small

Town Family Dream, the rising countryband decided to get to work in a small-town studio.

That studio was Panhandle House inDenton.

“We’d actually heard about it fromsome other bands,” said Preston Wait, theband’s fiddler.

The Josh Abbott Band comes back toDenton to play at the North Texas StateFair and Rodeo next Thursday, Aug. 23.The band plays the Budweiser Stage, thelarger of the rodeo’s two music stages.

Wait had praise for the local studio andits founder.

“Erik Herbst is just a really great engi-neer; he gets such great sound. Denton isa good little music town,” Wait said. “Wewould have used the studio before, butwe didn’t have the funds.”

Caleb Keeter, the band’s electric gui-tarist, tightens the band’s link to NorthTexas by living in Denton when he isn’ttouring with the Austin-based band.

Small Town Family Dream wasreleased on Abbott’s own Pretty DamnTough label, and it manages to be a col-lection of just the kind of independentproduction that’s poised for broadappeal. In fact, Wait said, the band hasbeen blowing up, with industry folks pre-dicting that Abbott and his band mightfollow a trajectory similar to the Denton-born Eli Young Band.

Wait said the band’s success probablyhas as much to do with the group’s cre-ativity and work ethic as anything else.

“We really are a band, which was some-thing you didn’t see in country music fora while, but are seeing now with the ZacBrown Band and Eli Young Band,” Waitsaid. “People appreciate that. They knowwho the drummer is and where he’s from.

“We play together a lot. And I thinkthat it helps that we all have our individ-ual styles, even though we play togetherso much. We don’t rehearse all that muchbecause we play three or four nights aweek. When you play together that much,

you know what everyone is going to doand you know what everyone’s style is. It’slike you perform in your style, but youalso perform as a band.”

Wait said Abbott is the uncontestedband leader, setting the creative agendaand writing songs, but Abbott expects theband members to chip in, and chip smartand proper. Wait’s fiddling is a goodexample. On Small Town, Wait con-tributes fiddle phrases that yodel consis-tently in a comfortable mezzo timbre.

“We just mesh so well together,” Waitsaid. “Josh has really been up front withme and putting the fiddle out front. Wego into the studio — before that, even —and he says we’ll do the fiddle here andwork it there, which I appreciate. Our

last banjo player, who startedwith us, is back with us now,and it’s been a lot of fun to puthim back into everything.”

Small Town Family Dreamdances on dangerous ground.Love of home and hearth, plowand plains are cliches of coun-try music, and Abbott takes thepretenders to task for exploit-ing rural American life a littletoo easily.

“Just about all of us grew upin small towns,” Wait said. “Igrew up in Colorado, in a townthat was maybe a population of140 at the most — if that. Thestuff you hear about on thisalbum, that’s how a lot of uslived. I came home from schooland got on a tractor, and whenit got dark, you parked it. Therewas no girl in a bikini waitingfor me.”

With a cover of Adam Hoodand Brian Keane’s “I’ll SingAbout Mine,” the band offers arebuttal to the glossy, romanticNashville version of the familyfarm. These days, there areprobably more urban cowboysrustling rush-hour traffic inSUVs than lads rumbling alongcrop rows on a Massey Fergu-son 5400.

The band keeps the albumfrom tipping into cliche mostlythrough Abbott’s conviction(references like “winning state”and “faces may change, but lastnames never do” are touches ofSouthwestern culture that ringtrue) and the band’s rootsy riffs.Wait’s fiddle comes in soundinglike a singer, easy does it. Thebanjo jangles, drawling just atouch, behind Keeter’s rockingguitar.

In fact, Small Town plays like

a scrapbook of a rural commu-nity, if there were such a thing. The album opens with “Idalou,”Abbott’s hometown, which issmall enough to foster a grownman’s sense of responsibility ona good year and up-closeenough to stifle a restless soulduring a bad one.

“Touch” is a portrait of lovediscovered, unruly and insis-tent. “She Will Be Free” is a loveletter to the one who got away.“Hotty Toddy” is a radio-readytribute to a woman with valuesthat fit the farm but with wilesthat can handle the city (“She’sa Kentucky Derby and anOxford grove.”)

Abbott and band also coverTerry Allen’s “FFA” and “Flat-land Farmer” and share theLone Star-saluting “My Texas”with Abbott’s musical crush,Texas roots man Pat Green.

The Josh Abbott Band hasbeen through the fair before, and is bound to embroider itslive set with gems like 2010’s“She’s Like Texas” and earlierrecords.

Wait said the band is just asdedicated to entertaining audi-ences live as it is devoted to cut-ting records you can sink yourteeth into.

“We’ve always worked hardto be entertaining,” Wait said. “Iwould like to think we do thateven on the recording side. Therecording and the live side, theykind of go together as far aswe’re concerned.

“Watching the crowd is how Iknow if we’re working hard. If Idon’t feel like I’ve connected orgiven something by the time Ileave the stage, I don’t feel likeI’ve done my job.”

FAIR MUSIC SCHEDULE

91 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. —

Boo Allen

The Expendables 2 After a seem-

ingly routine mission goes awry, a

band of mercenaries stumble onto a

global threat. Rated R, 103 minutes.

— Los Angeles Times

ParaNorman (1/2) No one wants

to tell 60 puppet makers that their

months of toil were ill spent. But the

wondrous and whimsical visuals far

surpass the disappointingly slipshod

story of an 11-year-old boy (voiced by

Kodi Smit-McPhee) who can see and

speak to the dead. Rated PG, 92 min-

utes. — The Associated Press

Sparkle In Motown-era Detroit, a tal-

ented young singer tries to balance a

new romance with her manager, her

family life and her ambition. Rated

PG-13, 111 minutes. — LAT

360 (1/2) Fernando Meirelles (City

of God) directed this fragmented

film, jumping among various locales

— Vienna, London, Denver, Bratislava

— to tell Peter Morgan’s superficially

woven story involving various char-

acters. People meet, interact and

have influences on others’ lives, as

seen in several other similar films.

Boosting the overall effect are a late

action sequence and some good per-

formances, including Anthony Hop-

kins as a grieving father and a terrific

Ben Foster as a paroled sex offender.

Rated R, 110 minutes. At the Angelika

Dallas. — B.A.
