Everyone is invited to abirthday bash for distin-guished composer Larry
Austin, who turns 80 thisSunday.
To celebrate, the Universityof North Texas College ofMusic is throwing not just aparty for the retired professor, but a concert of his music.
Apropos to the occasion, thefree program will be presentedby the Center for ExperimentalMusic and Intermedia in theMerrill Ellis IntermediaTheater. Not only was Austin adirector of CEMI during histenure at UNT, but he alsohelped establish the theater.
Austin received two degreesfrom UNT and taught at theuniversity from 1978 to 1996.His compositions span multiple
genres and styles, includingavant-garde, improvisational, electronic and computer music, and his works have been per-formed by such noted orches-tras as the New YorkPhilharmonic, Boston Sym-phony and National Symphony, and in Asia, Europe and theU.K.
“Larry is interested in fixed-media pieces — what we usedto call tape music — where themusic is recorded electronicallyand presented over loudspeak-ers,” said music professorJoseph Klein, chairman ofUNT’s Division of CompositionStudies.
“This is first concert we’vehad exclusively of his music in along time,” Klein said.
Among the performers areCollege of Music dean JamesScott on flute and piccolo;
Steven Harlos, UNT coordina-tor of piano and collaborativepiano; and UNT alumnusSteve Duke, guest saxophonist.Veiled Resonance, a 2008 piecewritten by guest composerElainie Lillios, a former stu-dent of Austin, is also on theprogram.
Klein said Austin picked thepieces for his birthday concert.
“He likes to be involved inthe performance aspect,” Kleinsaid. “He collaborates with theperformers. He does the tech. He’ll probably be sitting at themixing board. It would be real-ly hard to put a program likethis together without himbeing involved.”
He said Austin has stayedbusy in retirement.
“He’s been as active, if notmore so, in retirement than hewas when he was teachinghere,” Klein said. “He’s got per-formances happening con-stantly all over the world.”
Of Sunday’s concert, Kleinsaid: “There will be some sur-prises, mostly for Larry.”

A little shine, a lot color andfinely wrought texture are in thehouse at UNT on the Square, the snug University of NorthTexas gallery on Elm Street.
The gallery has two exhibi-tions running.
“Ceramics x 5” shows off thework of alumni from UNTCollege of Visual Arts andDesign: Chris Gray, Bart Fetz,Karen D. Hamilton, ShannonSullivan and Dave Zdrazil.
“Carlos Merida: Carnival inMexico and Mexican Costume”is a rare look at the printmak-er’s gift for space and an eyethat celebrated color. His exhi-bition runs in conjunction withDenton’s Fiesta-on-the-Squarelater this month.
The ceramics exhibit isn’texhaustive, but it does give asampling of the rangeceramists achieve. Chris Grayresponds to the tradition of ves-sel-making with reliable skilland technical finesse.
The pieces he lent to theshow, though, betray his aware-ness of graphic design, and itsability to bring the playful clar-ity of semiotics — the art ofcommunicating complicatedideas with simple, universalimages — onto the same fieldwith branding. Gray repeatsthe profile of a crow on his ves-sels and his pieces, a clever way
to claim good old tablewarewith his personal stamp.
Sullivan takes the craft ofceramics and puts it up on the
wall. Are we seeing the sugges-tion of a cross-section of some-thing? Say, a graft of flesh mag-nified under a microscope until
it becomes an abstract field ofpods, follicles or bubbles? Sulli-van glazes pockets of space withcontrasting colors — all of themwhispers of color rather thanshouts — and pleases the view-er with smooth curves and easydips. Topped with transparentglass or plastic, Sullivan’s workreels us in but won’t let us touchthe pockets of ceramics.
Zdrazil’s work seems to bethe story of pottery. Ceramicsare a mix of earth, water, airand fire. Zdrazil’s platters lookas if aerial photos of lakes werecarved out, glazed and thrust ina kiln. Green, deep blue andbrowns give a topographicaltouch to his series of pieces.
Merida’s 15 prints werebrought out of the Rare Bookand Texana Collections.Merida, an important Guate-malan artist who taught atUNT during the 1940s, isn’t asknown as Diego Rivera, butMerida collaborated withRivera on murals. He movedaway from figurative workbefore merging Mayan andindigenous ideas in his work.
The exhibitions run throughOct. 1.
UNT on the Square109 N. Elm St. Gallery hours are 9
a.m. to noon Monday throughWednesday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 8
p.m. Thursdays, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.Saturday. Admission is free.

Take the funky bass lines fromIncubus or the Red Hot Chili Peppers, stir in some high-speed, jazz/metal gui-tar fingerings and a splash of the musicheard in a street market in New Delhi orDamascus, and you’d be close to thesounds produced by Consider theSource.
On Saturday, the New York band willplay the Boiler Room with its self-described sci-fi Middle Eastern funksound that’s sure to surprise listenerswith a fluid, dynamic jam session thatplays off the crowd’s vigor.
“We 100 percent feel the energy of ouraudience. That’s kind of our main thing,”said John Ferrara, the group’s bassist.“When you’re playing for a crowd thatgets bigger every time you go and theenergy gets really great, we play better,we play differently.”
Ferrara, guitarist-singer GabrielMarin and drummer Justin Ahiyonfound their sound after Marin andAhiyon went to study music in India.
“They went because of this connec-
tion they have with Indian music —when they went, they came back andthey had a whole new way of playing thesame music,” Ferrara said. “The funkand the rock and the jazz and all thestuff the three of us are really, really into— it all sort of came together with thatother sound now.”
Ferrara said he thinks the group’seclectic sounds are an indicator of a shiftin music caused by websites likeMySpace, which give artists a chance to
get their music out for free.“Bands and singer-songwriters that
you wouldn’t have expected to be seenor heard by the majority of people aregetting [more exposure],” he said.“People are already becoming moreopen-minded and actively searching forthat kind of music.”
It’s that acceptance that makesDenton one of the band’s favorite cities.
“I have to say Denton is really one ofour favorite cities to go to because of ourfans there and the people who come see[us],” Ferrara said. “There’s a certainopen-mindedness and a certain energythat they bring.”

Jeff Allen will play the MuleBarn in Justin on Saturday, playing the type of songs
that have driven the countryscene for decades — songsabout the common man, hardwork and old-fashioned fun.
At 15, Allen picked up an oldguitar in his grandparents’home, not knowing his storywould be the stuff countrysongs are made of.
“Through the summer, whenI was working for my parents’cabinet shop, I would go downthere during my lunch breaksand play,” he said. “I would godown there for dinner and play
as long as I could, until eventu-ally my grandfather saw that Ihad taken enough liking to itthat he just gave me the guitar.”
In typical Texas country fash-ion, Allen bucked the conven-tional ways of learning music. When he didn’t agree with thelessons of his guitar teacher,Allen moved beside the radioand taught himself by pickingalong to what he heard on theairwaves.
Taking the stage wasn’talways easy for him. It tooktime, dedication and somegood advice to get him in frontof a crowd.
“Somebody said to me onetime, everything you want isright outside your comfort
zone, so I forced myself onFridays and Saturdays, no mat-ter what, to kind of overcomemy fear,” he said.
It was during a festival in hishometown when he decidedmusic was his passion.
At Oktoberfest in Canton,Allen sang “Jailhouse Rock”with an Elvis Presley coverband. After that, he said, hewas hooked, and with the sup-port of his family, he got seriousas a musician.
Allen said he started off try-ing to imitate other countryartists, but he’s realizing thathis own music is what peoplewant.
“The older that I’ve got, andonly in the last four or fiveyears, I’ve realized there’salready a Merle Haggard andthere’s already a DwightYoakam, so I just need to dowhat I do,” he said.

OPENING FRIDAYBran Nue Dae () A soundtrack in
search of a movie, this crowd-pleas-
ing musical from Australia sees its
toe-tapping production numbers
compromised by a threadbare narra-
tive and shabby construction. The
coming-of-age story follows an
Aboriginal teen (Rocky McKenzie)
who escapes from his strict small-
town religious upbringing in 1969 in
search of adventure and the girl of
his dreams. It’s tedious whenever the
music isn’t playing, although
Geoffrey Rush has some amusing
over-the-top moments as a punitive
priest. Rated PG-13, 81 minutes. At
the Magnolia. — Todd Jorgenson
Flipped () Slight and shameless-
ly cute tale of young romance from
director Rob Reiner follows eighth-
graders Bryce (Callan McAuliffe) and
Juli (Madeline Carroll), who are next-
door neighbors with the ultimate
love-hate relationship. It’s a simple
story of childhood innocence with a
gimmicky construction that sees
each of its vignettes told from the
perspectives of both children in a he-
said-she-said kind of way. The film
has nostalgic charm to spare, but the
construction becomes tiresome
without more depth in its screenplay.
Rated PG, 89 minutes. — T.J.
Legendary () Wrestling substi-
tutes for karate in this Karate Kid-like,
formulaic family drama. A picked-
upon Oklahoma high school student
(Devon Graye) learns how to defend
himself, and gains recognition when
he goes out for the wrestling team
and has success. He initially demurs
because of the shadow hanging over
him by his late father and older broth-
er, both one-time local wrestling leg-
ends. Ordinary and predictable. Rated
PG-13, 103 minutes. At the Inwood. —

Lebanon () This taut Israeli
film stays mostly inside a tank with a
group of Israeli soldiers as they
advance into enemy territory at the
start of the 1982 Lebanon war. Their
succession of suspenseful encoun-
ters are all cleverly rendered by
writer-director Samuel Maoz. He cre-
ates and maintains a constant feeling
of terror and danger. Rated R, 93
minutes. At the Magnolia. — B.A.

Fans of car wrecks, trainwrecks, earthquakes, tsunamisand other disasters will enjoyI’m Still Here, a new documen-tary from Casey Affleck. Betterknown as an actor, Affleck asdocumentarian turns his cam-eras on his brother-in-law, theunnatural disaster known asJoaquin Phoenix.
The strange behavior of theOscar-nominated actor beganin late 2008 amid reports thathe was giving up his actingcareer to pursue one in whatsome might call music.
Hounding paparazzi joinedwith media outlets to conveyimages of Phoenix, by thensporting a definite Unabomberlook. His strange appearance onthe Late Show with DavidLetterman, included in the film, reinforced the idea that Phoenixhad gone over the edge.
Affleck chronicles almost theentire initial period of whenPhoenix seemed to be barrelingout of control, which will natu-rally set Affleck up for chargesof exploitation. Which he does,of course, and it adds to thefilm’s human-interest anglethat Phoenix feels no hesita-tion, on camera, to frolic withnaked ladies of the night, snortwhat looks like cocaine, smoke

Joaquin Phoenix, left, poses for a portrait as Casey Affleck films for I’m Still Here, on Feb.
3, 2009, in Beverly Hills, Calif.
Phoenix’s meteoricdescent caught byAffleck in new film
what looks like marijuana andgenerally act like a creep.
Phoenix has several syco-phants who always seem nearby, ready to placate the obstreper-ous, hot-tempered actor. Itseems his greatest pleasurescome in smoking and in talkingabout himself, both of which he
does constantly. But when hetruly seems to want to performhip-hop, he becomes pathetic.
Phoenix chases down SeanCombs, from New York toMiami to Washington, D.C., andelsewhere.
When they finally meet, thereluctant Combs comes off aslevel-headed and honest — sohonest that he eventually tellsPhoenix what he does not wantto hear: the truth about his mar-ginal musical talent.
Since Phoenix and Afflecktravel in rarefied Hollywood cir-cles, several well-known per-sonalities appear, most ofwhom stand perplexed by this
new persona. But the most painful
sequences come, first, whenPhoenix confronts one of hisflunkies about betraying himbehind his back to the media, and, second, with a nightclubappearance in Miami that endswith Phoenix jumping into acrowd to attack a heckler, beingpulled out by security and led toa bathroom, and then throwingup repeatedly.
So, if interested in the unrav-eling of a porky, uneducated, mumbling, seemingly dense, marginally talented, chain-smoking, temperamental actor,I’m Still Here works.

Roberts has found eternal happi-
ness, true bliss and bodily harmony
in Eat Pray Love, the new mind-bog-
glingly insipid film from director
Ryan Murphy, based on Elizabeth

second starring role of the last six
years, America’s Sweetheart plays
author Gilbert, as she travels to Italy,
India and Bali to find herself after a
failed marriage to one man (Billy
Crudup) and subsequent relationship
with another (James Franco). Mind-

ensemble of erstwhile action-hero
types including Sylvester Stallone

Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Jason
Statham, Mickey Rourke and others,
including a couple of surprise
cameos. The plot involves a group of
assassins on a secret yet dangerous

story takes a clear backseat to
shootouts and explosions that grow
tiresome. Rated R, 103 minutes. —

Get Low () Low-key charac-
ter piece elevated by a superb lead
performance from Robert Duvall,
playing a hermit who emerges from
a life in the Tennessee woods with a
wish to arrange a living funeral so he
can exorcise demons from his past.
The script (remarkably based on a
true story) is thin on its own, but
director Aaron Schneider smartly lets
his actors — including Bill Murray,
Sissy Spacek and Lucas Black — take
command. The result is deliberately
paced but ultimately poignant. Rated
PG-13, 102 minutes. — T.J.
Going the Distance () This
surprisingly funny romantic comedy
delivers some raunchy Hangover-
style humor in a familiar package. A
couple (Drew Barrymore and Justin
Long) meet in New York and fall for
each other. She must relocate to San
Francisco, but they do their best to
maintain a long-distance romance.
The unexceptional narrative gives
way to crackling, R-rated dialogue.

Machete () Stylish if uneven
action-comedy spoof from director

presumed dead by a Mexican drug
kingpin (Steven Seagal), only to
become an unlikely hero during a
fight for immigration rights during
the re-election campaign of a conser-
vative Texas senator (Robert De Niro).
But Rodriguez never engages in much
social commentary, preferring to take
comedic jabs and stage creatively
violent killings. The quirky cast helps
the filmmaker offer several big
laughs. Rated R, 105 minutes. — T.J.

Organizers are keeping their fin-gers crossed that the weatherwill be beautiful for this year’s
Arts, Antiques & Autos Extravaganzathis Saturday on Denton’s downtownSquare.
“I am looking at the forecasts for theweekend, and it looks great,” said eventcoordinator Christine Gossett. “We areso glad.”
“These last two years have beenwashed out by rain,” she said. “I thinksome of the rain and clouds this weekmight make people a little leery aboutmaking plans to come.”
No worries. The free festival, spon-sored by the Denton Main StreetAssociation, will take place, rain orshine, as it has for the past 11 years.
According to Gossett, it all began in1999.
“The History Channel Great Racecame through Denton, and downtownwas a pit stop on that route,” she said.“That day, more than a thousand peoplecame out to see these fantastic antiquecars make their stop in downtown, anda new idea for the former county seatSaturday festival was born.”
In October 2000, the Denton MainStreet Association changed up its tradi-tional fall festival “to reflect more aboutwhat downtown was, and to an extentstill is today,” Gossett said.
“In the past, downtown was the retailbusiness hub of Denton, as well as acrossroads for all vehicle traffic, beforethe highway was built diverting trafficabout the central business district,” shesaid.
“Today downtown is still a centralhub of activity and a place where peoplecome to find antique and collectibletreasures in several stores arounddowntown, and the arts still abound indowntown in studios, retail stores andonstage. So, from this, the committeeback in 2000 named it the Arts,Antiques & Autos Extravaganza.”
