Matthew 21:28-32: Mercy Over Sacrifice

The Gospel passage for this Sunday, once again, is peculiar to Matthew. However, the first line of the parable—“A man had two sons”—is not uncommon among Jesus’ many parables. One can call to mind the famous parable about the prodigal son (Luke 15) with the same beginning. And somewhat like Luke 15, this story of the two sons in Matthew is about mercy… The point is very obvious: the son who said “No” to the father’s request but eventually changed his mind did in-deed do the father’s will; the other son who said “Yes” but never followed through

did not carry out his father’s will. From the context Jesus’ parable, and in the larger context of the Gospel, we know that the first son represents the “marginalized” in society—namely, tax collectors, sinners, and prostitutes—and the second son would represent the Jewish religious leaders, Pharisees and elders. The father, of course, represents God. First of all, we do have to pause a little bit and reflect on the second son’s Yes. In the minds of many modern readers, he already stands condemned. But one cannot underestimate his willingness to say Yes to the Father. Even though it was not a good Yes, his saying it does say something about his initial commitment to the Father. In other words, before we can con-demn the religious authorities of Jesus’ time, we have to give them due credit for their merits in trying to preserve the integrity of their religious traditions. But what those leaders lacked was at the core of Jesus’ preaching: mercy. And that brings us to the first son who said No. During Jesus’ time, tax collectors and prostitutes were sinners by the very nature of their professions. The former collected money from their fellow Jews for a foreign authority, the Romans. The latter sold their services to the Roman sol-diers. Thus, they were notoriously immoral and were very much despised by their own people. The magnitude of their sins is explicitly emphasized in the first son’s No. By having said No to the Father’s request, this son had willfully rejected him! Again, one cannot underestimate the seriousness of this No. However, through conversion of heart, he was able to come back to the Father. Likewise through conversion, tax collectors and prostitutes were eventually accepted into the Kingdom even ahead of the religious leaders. What this means for us is that, with God, there is always another chance to repent and to come back to him. And that is the great message of mercy proclaimed by the Lord! The religious authorities and elders might have had an affinity to the religious traditions, but they forgot about mercy. This also serves as a reminder for religious authorities today… In all things, we have to let mercy be the guiding principle: “I desire mercy, not sacrifice. I have come to call not the righteous, but sinners,” (Matthew 9:13).

1. Chương trình Giáo Lý Song Ngữ kính mời quí phụ huynh tham dự buổi họp Phụ Huynh Toàn Trường vào ngày Chúa Nhật 15 tháng 10, 2017, từ 1:30 đến 3:00 giờ chiều tại Hội Trường nhà xứ. 2. Chúng tôi cũng xin kính mời quí phụ huynh và các em học Giáo Lý giờ I và giờ II tham dự Thánh Lễ Khai Giảng Giáo Lý vào sáng thứ Bảy ngày 21 tháng 10, 2017 lúc 9:30 tại nhà thờ. Các em xếp hàng trước Hội Trường theo từng lớp lúc 8:45 AM. Qúy Thầy Cô sẽ dẫn các em vào nhà thờ để cầu nguyện và suy niệm gương Thánh nhân trước Thánh lễ. Sau Thánh lễ mỗi em sẽ lên dâng hoa kính Đức Mẹ Fatima. Xin quý phụ huynh cho mỗi em $1.00 bỏ vào rổ tiền nhà thờ để chi phí mua hoa; số tiền dư sẽ giúp học sinh nghèo tại Việt Nam. Truyền thống Công giáo tôn sùng Đức Mẹ là Đấng có đời sống thánh thiện, cách đặc biệt để thể hiện lòng sùng kính Đức Mẹ là trồng Vườn Hoa Đức Mẹ (Mary Garden). Điểm tập trung của khu vườn là tượng Đức Mẹ. Kích cỡ tượng hoặc khu vườn không là vấn đề. Nghĩ về Hoa Đức Mẹ để suy niệm về cuộc đời Đức Kitô qua Đức Mẹ – và Đức Mẹ luôn hướng dẫn chúng ta tới Chúa Con. HOA HUỆ: Truyền thuyết nói rằng Sứ thần Gáp-ri-en cầm hoa huệ khi tới truyền tin vui rằng Đức Mẹ được Thiên Chúa tuyển chọn làm Mẹ của Đấng Cứu Thế. Hoa Huệ thường được thấy trong các hình Đức Mẹ để biểu thị đức trinh khiết và ân sủng. HOA TÍM: Hoa này là biểu tượng của sự khiêm nhường và giản dị. Đức Mẹ khiêm nhường “xin vâng” như lời Sứ thần: “Vâng, tôi đây là nữ tỳ của Chúa, xin Chúa cứ làm cho tôi như lời sứ thần nói” (Lc 1:38). HOA HỒNG: Hoa này biểu tượng Đức Mẹ là Nữ Vương Thiên Đàng. Hoa Hồng Đỏ biểu thị nỗi buồn. Hoa Hồng Trắng biểu thị niềm vui, và Hoa Hồng Vàng biểu thị lòng tôn trọng dành cho Đức Mẹ là Mẹ của Đấng Cứu Thế. HOA CẨM CHƯỚNG (Carnation): Theo truyền thuyết, hoa cẩm chướng nở vào đêm Chúa Giêsu giáng sinh and was a sign of Mary's joy at the Child's birth. HOA CHUÔNG (Bluebells): Hoa có hình chuông nhìn như cái đê (dùng để lót tay khi khâu vá) và biểu thị Đôi Tay Lao Động của Đức Mẹ, và thường được gọi là Đê Tay Đức Mẹ (Our Lady's Thimbles). CÂY HƯƠNG THẢO (Rosemary): Truyền thuyết nói rằng Đức Mẹ đã phơi quần áo của Chúa Con trên bụi cây này. Sau đó, cây này có mùi ngọt thơm. HOA HUỆ THUNG LŨNG (Lily of the Valley): Hoa này còn gọi là Hoa Nước Mắt Đức Mẹ (Our Lady's Tears). Truyền thuyết cho rằng Nước Mắt Đức Mẹ rơi xuống bên chân Thập Giá và hóa thành loại hoa thơm này. HOA ĐỔNG NỘI (Meadow Cress): Cây này còn gọi là cây Áo Choàng Đức Mẹ (Our Lady's Smock). Giống như các cô gái cùng tuổi, Đức Maria cũng học may vá và thêu thùa, và hoa này biểu thị các quần áo mà Đức Mẹ đã làm. HOA VẠN THỌ (Marigold): Các Kitô hữu thời sơ khai đặt Hoa Vạn Thọ xung quanh tượng Đức Mẹ và gọi đó là “các đồng tiền vàng của Đức Mẹ”. THẢO DƯỢC: Hầu hết các thảo dược đều có thể được sử dụng trong vườn để biểu thị Mary. Các thảo dược làm dễ chịu và chữa bệnh tượng trưng tình yêu và lòng trắc ẩn của Đức Mẹ. Các thảo dược đắng và chua tượng trưng các nỗi đau buồn của Đức Mẹ, và các thảo dược ngọt tượng trưng sự ngọt ngào của Đức Mẹ. HOA HUỆ TÂY: Truyền thuyết nói rằng thế kỷ XIV, một hiệp sĩ rất giàu có nhưng từ bỏ tất cả để vào tu Dòng Xitô (Cistercian Or-der). Vì yêu mến Đức Mẹ, ông chỉ muốn lặp đi lặp lại suốt ngày đêm: Ave Maria. Khi ông già và qua đời, ông được an táng tại sân nhà nguyện của nhà dòng. Hoa Huệ Tây đã nở trên mộ ông làm bằng chứng rằng Đức Mẹ đã nghe lời ông ca tụng bằng lời cầu nguyện ngắn gọn nhưng đầy lòng sùng kính. Khi cánh hoa lấp lánh, người ta thấy chữ Ave Maria sáng lên. Khi trồng hoa và tận hưởng Vườn Hoa Đức Mẹ, bạn tôn kính Đức Mẹ và có thể hiểu đầy đủ lời “xin vâng” của Đức Mẹ, đồng thời đem Đức Mẹ đến cho toàn thế giới! Trích sách Lẽ Sống

Diocesan Children's Choir to sing in Rome

for the Pope!

The Orange County Diocesan Children's Choir will sing a Concert, Mass at St. Peters and in Assisi at the Basilica of St. Francis, and for the PAPAL Mass on the Solemnity of the Epiphany with the Sistine Choir. This is a huge honor and we need your help!

Diocesan Children's Choir The Diocesan Children's Choir of Orange, begun in 2016, rehearses on average three Saturday's per month. The Choir sings for the major liturgies of the diocese and one Saturday evening Mass at Christ Cathe-dral. It is presently made up of 63 young musicians who come from throughout the Diocese of Orange, over 20 parishes. In their first year, they have sing at several special diocesan liturgies, in festivals, at several parishes throughout the diocese, in two major concerts at Christ Cathedral and are now preparing for a trip to Rome. Please consider helping these great young singers.

commitment of accepting certain religious and

spiritual responsibilities for the child by both

parents and godparents. The role of the parish

staff is to help assist you in making these commit-

ments.
