January 11, 2015 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, With the 2015 calendar year just starting, I write to you on this important Feast of the Baptism of the Lord which marks the end of the Christmas Season. Shortly, Ash Wednesday, which is February 18th, will be upon us and the eve of the Lunar New Year—the Year of the Goat. For many of our Asian brothers and sisters, the beginning days of the Lunar New Year are days of celebrating faith and ancestors, culture and tradition. For those very reasons, a request was made for dispensations from the Ash Wednesday and First Lenten Fri-day obligation of fast and abstinence. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Commit-tee on the Liturgy stated: Because the assignment of the day for Ash Wednesday is entirely within the competence of t he Holy See, inasmuch as it establishes the liturgy cal calendar of the universal church, pastoral ques tions in regard to fast and abstinence should be addressed by each diocesan Bishop. (Newsletter, Vol. XLI, January 2005) Therefore, judging as a competent authority of this local Church of Orange and as a spiritual benefit for those who observe the Lunar New Year this year (CIC 87§1), I approve: 1. The transfer of the obligation of fast and absti-

nence of Ash Wednesday of this year (February 18th) to the Wednesday of the following week (February 25th).

2. The transfer of the obligation of abstinence on the First Friday of Lent (February 20th) to the Monday, Tuesday or Thursday of the following week of 2015. Mùa Chay Là Gì?

Mùa Chay là mùa ăn năn thống hối, cầu nguyện, bố thí, mùa chịu nạn, thương khó, chuẩn bị cho đại biến cố Phục Sinh. Được bắt đầu từ thứ tư Lễ Tro và kết thúc với Chúa Nhật Phục Sinh. Nó chứa đựng 40 ngày chay tịnh để tưởng nhớ đến biến cố Chúa vào trong hoang địa ăn chay, cầu nguyện và sau đó chịu sự cám dỗ trong 40 đêm ngày; là thời gian của thương khó và thống hối. (thực sự là 46 ngày, nếu tính từ Thứ tư lễ Tro cho đến Chúa nhật Phục sinh, nhưng theo nghĩa hẹp, Mùa Chay tính từ Chúa nhật thứ nhất đến chiều Thứ Năm Tuần Thánh, nghĩa là cho tới lúc cử thành thánh lễ Tiệc Ly vào ban chiều "in Caena Domi-ni", trong đó Chúa lập Bí tích Thánh Thể, rửa chân cho 12 môn đệ và truyền lại Giới răn mới) (Thời gian 40 ngày cũng để nhớ lại 40 đêm ngày Maisen cầu nguyện trên Núi Sinai và được Chúa trao cho 10 Giới răn. Rồi 40 ngày còn để nhớ lại cuộc hành trình 40 ngày trong sa mạc của Tiên tri Elia, lúc ông trốn khỏi cơn thịnh nộ của Hoàng hậu Gezabele, để tiến về Núi Oreb (cũng là núi Sinai, kế Biển Ðỏ và Kênh đào Suez), nơi đây Chúa mạc khải và trao cho ông sứ vụ mới (1 Vua 19),

Trong ba thế kỷ đầu, Mùa Chay chỉ kéo dài hai hay ba ngày, sau đó kéo dài từ ba đến bốn tuần. Con số bốn mươi được áp dụng do quy định của Công Đồng Nicaea (325). Ngoại trừ những ngày Chúa Nhật, Giáo Hội đề nghị các tín hữu nên ăn chay theo luật định. Toàn thời gian Mùa Chay cũng là thời gian chuẩn bị tâm hồn cho cuộc khổ nạn, chịu chết và Phục Sinh của Chúa Giêsu Kitô. Trong Mùa Chay không được kết hôn, Linh mục mặc áo màu tím, không có kinh Vinh Danh và Alleluia trong Thánh lễ. Không đệm đàn khi không có tiếng hát. Không trưng bông trên bàn thờ. Mỗi ngày có Thánh lễ với những lời mở đầu Mùa Chay khác nhau. Trong thời gian này, Giáo Hội chuẩn bị cho biến cố trung tâm của lịch sử, sự Cứu Chuộc nhân loại của Chúa Giêsu Kitô.

Công Đồng Vaticanô thứ hai dạy rằng :” Mùa Chay có hai đặc tính :1/ Hồi tưởng lại bí tích rửa tội hoặc là chuẩn bị cho bí tích này. 2/Nhấn mạnh đến tinh thần ăn năn, sám hối. Bởi những ý nghĩa đặc biệt này, mùa Chay chuẩn bị cho các tín hữu sẳn sàng cử hành mầu nhiệm vượt qua sau

Vì lý do trên, Đức Cha Kevin Vann, Giám Mục Giáo Phận Orange miễn chuẩn ăn chay, kiêng thịt ngày thứ Tư Lễ Tro và thứ Sáu tuần thứ I mùa Chay qua những ngày khác như sau: 1. Dời ngày ăn chay, kiêng thịt thứ Tư Lễ Tro (18

tháng 2) qua thứ Tư tuần sau (25 tháng 2). 2. Dời ngày kiêng thịt thứ Sáu tuần thứ I mùa chay

(20 tháng 2) qua thứ Hai, thứ Ba, hoặc thứ Năm tuần sau.

*** Các em học Giáo Lý, Việt Ngữ và Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể sẽ được nghỉ học vào Thứ Bảy và Chúa Nhật ngày 14 & 15 và 21 & 22 tháng 2, 2015 để mừng Hội Chợ Tết của Giáo Xứ, và mừng Tết Nguyên Đán Xin quí phụ huynh đưa các em trở lại học vào Thứ Bảy và Chúa Nhật ngày 28 tháng 2 và mồng 1 tháng 3, 2015. Do đó Giáo Hội kêu gọi các tín hữu hảy hăng hái hy sinh, hãm mình, làm việc bác ái, cầu nguyện và làm việc Tông đồ trong Mùa Chay Thánh.

DIAS DE OBLIGACIÓN

1. La obligación del ayuno y la abstinencia del miér-

coles de ceniza de este año (18 de febrero) se traslada

al miércoles de la siguiente semana (25 de febrero).

2. La obligación de la abtinencia del primer viernes de

cuaresma (20 de febrero) se traslada al lunes, martes o

jueves de la siguiente semana de 2015.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

Jesús manifiesta su poder mediante el perdón de los

pecados (Marcos 2:1-12). Por medio de la reconciliación con

Dios, Jesús sana a los enfermos, marginalizados y hasta sus

propios enemigos. Este poder de perdonar pecados Jesús mis-

mo lo encarga a su Iglesia, infundiendo su Espíritu sobre los

primeros discípulos (Juan 20:22-23).

Según el Símbolo (Credo) de los Apóstoles, los cris-

tianos creemos en el “perdón de los pecados”. Esta creencia se

relaciona con creer en el Espíritu Santo, la Iglesia, la co-

munión de los santos, la resurrección del cuerpo y la vida

eterna. En el perdón de los pecados, el Espíritu Santo manifi-

esta su continua presencia y acción en la Iglesia y comunión

de los santos. Quienes reciben el perdón de los pecados medi-

ante la celebración del Bautismo o del sacramento de la Rec-

onciliación, están preparados para la resurrección y la vida

eterna.

El perdón de los pecados manifiesta el poder de Cris-

to, del Espíritu Santo y de la Iglesia. Los cristianos estamos

llamados al perdón; perdonando, así como deseamos ser per-

PARA LA GLORIA DE DIOS La historia completa del pueblo judío va dirigida ha-

cia una meta: que Dios sea glorificado por medio del pueblo

escogido. Los cristianos también están llamados a “hacer todo

para la gloria de Dios”. En las Escrituras de hoy Pablo nos

recuerda que la mejor manera que tenemos para glorificar a

Dios es buscar el beneficio de “todos” tal como Cristo hizo cu-

ando derramó su sangre por toda la humanidad.

La lectura de Levítico explica una manera en que los

judíos buscaban el beneficio de muchos, manteniendo a los

leprosos y la lepra alejados del pueblo escogido. Jesús encuen-

tra una manera mejor: cura al leproso, que inmediatamente

retorna a la comunidad para difundir la Buena Nueva de

Jesús a todo el que le escuche. De este modo tanto Jesús como

el leproso cumplen con su llamado de glorificar al Dios que nos

llena “con la alegría de la salvación”.
