New England Style with a European FlareThe Yellow House? In the fashionable community of Old Oakville, tout le monde knows the Yellow House. It was the highlight of Oakville’s popular biennial St. Andrew’s Christmas House Tour a few years ago. On a freezing cold day, the lineup stretched around the block; 1,500 décor mavens traipsed through the front door. They had come—as you will—to admire, and take inspiration from, the home’s cohesive blend of layered eclecticism, the mix of old and new eras, the sleek and the ornate and the formal and the casual.

Yes, you probably do know the Yellow House. Location scouts favour it as a setting for movies, including New York Minute starring the Olsen twins, and commercials for Sears, The Bay and Home Hardware. The house was featured in Canadian House and Home. And no less a tastemaker than the CEO of one of Canada’s most pre-eminent multinational architecture and interior design firms is a fan of the house—he’s the previous owner.

Though dating from 1995, the custom-built home nestles comfortably amid the neighbourhood’s century homes. The five-bedroom, five-fireplace house looks gracious, romantic and like it’s always been there.

It fits right in, thanks to welcoming, traditional features such as the pillared front verandah, which evokes the Old South, and clapboard siding and a dormered roof punctuated by Palladian windows (that hark back to New England) and plantation shutters.

What an agreeable location this is, on a quiet street with mature trees. Yet you are but a short walk from the smart downtown boutiques and eateries stretching along East Lakeshore Road, or the GO Train that will whisk you to Toronto, 20 minutes away.

In the front hall, just past the front door, notice the first of the house’s many unexpected luxury touches. On the balustrade flanking the stair and on the

second-floor landing, French-inspired custom metal grille work takes the place of typical plain wooden pickets. The metalwork complements the classic dentil crown mouldings and detailed custom trim work that enhances the sense of scale in the hall and throughout the principal rooms.

A wall of French doors with transoms and sidelights connects the hall to the dining room, making the ample dining room look even more expansive. Here and in the family room, pay heed to the bird’s-eye maple flooring, which was sanded and polished to make its grain pattern yield up layers “as deep as the ocean,” the previous owner says.

Nothing is too good for your guests, as the second powder room, with its spectacular, Kohler Artist Editions “Fables & Flowers” pedestal sink, makes clear.

If those guests congregate in the kitchen, as party guests are wont to do, the oversize, 526-square-foot cantina will accommodate them all without tripping up the chef. The original owner was a chef who gave classes here, which explains the double, professional-grade everything: Gaggenau warming drawers, Fisher & Paykel dishwashers—including one in the large centre island—and the industrial-size sinks and fixtures.

Non-gourmets will appreciate the see-through convenience of the glass door on the Sub-Zero commercial refrigerator, even if they don’t fully exploit the Gaggenau stove top with barbecue grill, deep fryer, steamer, pasta basket, wok and Grohe pot filler.

The custom cabinetry by Downsview Kitchens, embellished with antique hardware, is fitted with lazy susans, wood utensil dividers, pot drawers, soft-close drawers and pull-outs and organizers. There is built-in storage for everything from pots to cookie sheets to cutting boards.

The lack of clutter will make it easy to focus on the stenciled quotes marching above the kitchen windows. The quotes borrow from Shakespeare’s King Henry VI, Part III and other literary works.

The kitchen’s expanse of stone surfacing includes slab honed granite counters and backsplash, and book-matched grey marble wall paneling enlivened by subtle, though dramatic, dark veins running on the diagonal.

French doors across the back of the house lead from the kitchen to the professionally landscaped backyard and its in-ground Oasis Gunite swimming pool and spa and patio.

The ground-floor master bedroom has a private walkout. Custom arbours add architectural interest while providing privacy. Indeed, the previous owner dispensed with window coverings for the vaulted, skylit family room that acts as the hub of the house.

With its 1,500-plus panes of glass in the indoors and out, this house may well be the lightest, brightest, airiest dwelling you will ever live in.
