When Jeff Donnelly bought The Bimini Public House in 1999, it was both the catalyst Vancouver needed to inspire modern pub culture and the start of a successful hospitality company known as Donnelly Group. The Donnelly Group Hospitality Suite is replete with full bar, theatre room, parlour games, pop-up barbershop and a giant leather couch. As a head office on weekdays, this space transforms into an immersive event space in the evenings and weekends and is located one floor above the Blackbird Public House. Glass divider walls open the entire space up to promote social interactivity while creating smaller, offset areas such as a 10 chair boardroom.

This elevator accessed space is perfect for private events and can be both catered and staffed for bar service. The room and its furniture are easily manipulated to better tailor the experience.

the new oxford1144 Homer St. | Yaletown

Living proof of Oxford’s rollicking athletic and party rituals, the New Oxford is a nod to British sporting culture and the oldest university in the English speaking language. Its gun-metal millwork, traditional furnishings and ‘study room’ adorned with ivy-league antiques are bridged by a 50 foot long cantilevered bar serving fashionably classic cocktails. Some bloody good local, organic pub food washes down easily with the assortment of craft beer taps and imaginative wines. Spirits are always high on game-days, most notably as home to the Chelsea FC supporters club.

Tavern serves as a basement rec-room for the New Oxford. A winding raw metal stairway connects the two rooms, creating the largest, most versatile local in the neighbourhood. Classic pinball, pool, shuffleboard and buck hunter make up a rambunctious games area. Weekly comedy and karaoke nights keep the back bar and DJ booth lit up and alive with laughter.

Unwind with a Coors Banquet, priced-to-sell bourbon or a selection of serious craft beer to wet your whistle with easy-going pub food to recharge. If you want to crank it up and rock the casbah, do remember, Tavern’s dial always goes to eleven.

cinema901 Granville St. | Entertainment District

Located in the middle of Vancouver’s historic Theatre Row, Cinema is the relaxed antidote to Granville Street’s neon glitz and glam. With custom chandeliers overhead and herringbone-patterned tiles below, it suggests a modern-day speakeasy and delivers a casual dining room accompanied by a bustling bar. The jukebox, classic pinball, foosball and shuffleboard make up a games room kept lively by a DJ booth and well-stocked satellite bar.

In the mid-1800s ‘Three English Greenhorns’ bought and settled the West End giving a beginning to Vancouver’s Three Brits public house — a beach front hangout overlooking English Bay. As the neighbourhood’s original craft brew house, 10 draught taps still pour BC and import beer best matched by it’s locally sourced menu, late night cocktail list and daily brunch features.

Long departed is The Lamplighter’s century old heritage as a dry goods store. A bastion of bourbon soaked history — still strong is its legacy as Gastown’s oldest and liveliest watering hole. Where shelved barley sacks and top hats were once sold in Rubinowitz Departmental, now stands an impressive 50 draught taps flanked by floor to ceiling windows exposing original brickwork behind cold, stacked beer kegs. Pinball and pool make for spirited games nights especially as the Lamp is home to the Manchester United Supporters club.

Named for a Bahamian island haven and supply point of prohibition-era rum runners, the Bimini is no stranger to a dark and stormy. There’s a real neighbourhood history between those wood-panelled walls, where local hippies and Greenpeacers used to hold court, and today it remains the locals’ local.
