Honor Council

Our Council did make Honor Council this year again. So thank you to everyone who helped out with our council activities in any way – either by helping with planning or attending any of our events.

Little Free Library I just had to share this with all of you. Last week I found a bag of books with a note fastened to it hanging on my mailbox from a couple of young men who had used the Little Free Library that is on my front lawn. Here is what their note said: “My name is Branden. Me and nephew Miguel walk by your little library every once in a while and he’s checked a few books out. Tonight he was reading a few of his own books and he said he would like you to have them so other boys and girls can enjoy them.

Thank You.

Branden and Miguel”

Young Authors’ Festival The Young Authors’ Festival is coming up on April 29th at WITC Conference Center in Rice Lake, Wisconsin from 8 a.m. to noon. We have several helpers lined up, but if you have not volunteered to help and would like to help, we will find a job for you. We do appreciate everyone who has volunteered to help so far.

Tidbits from Wisconsin Reading Association 2017 Convention

Mem Fox Mem Fox was the keynote presenter on Thursday at the convention. I wish you all could have heard her. Here is a little background on her. She was born in Australia, grew up in Africa, studied drama in England and returned to Adelaide, Australia in 1970. She is Australia’s best loved picture book author. Fox was an associate professor of Education at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia, where she taught teachers for 24 years until she retired in 1996.

Mem Fox’s message that came through “loud and clear” was that reading aloud is very powerful! She said one needs to make the words sing and read the most interesting delightful stories you can find. This will change lives and maybe even the world.

Another point Mem made was that kids need to be read to if they are going to be writers. This brings extra-ordinary language to kids that they may not here unless they are read to.

She also said that children need real books. Then stated that basil readers all have the same sluggish qualities and do not have anything that will touch the hearts of readers. Mem said when she writes her books, she tries to find words that will tweak the reader’s interest and promote love and kindness.

Here are three of Mem Fox’s books you might like to find and read to your children/students.

Possum Magic, Tough Boris and Guess Who?

They are delightful stories.

Mem’s professional book called, Reading Magic: Why Reading Aloud to Our Children Will Change their Lives Forever, is an excellent book to give to all parents and teaching staff to read. This book tells the value of reading aloud to children.

“Great art communicates before it is understood.”

Mem Fox, February 2017

Books from the Convention Professional Book Read, Write, Lead by Regie Routman

Regie Routman was the keynote speaker at the convention on Saturday morning. Her book is an excellent resource for teachers who are looking for ideas to improve their teaching and student learning.

Student Books Booked by Kwame Alexander

This book is about a young man named Nick Hall who likes to play soccer. It is all written in poetic verse which makes it an easy, fun read.

I Lived on Butterfly Hill by Marjorie Agosin

This book is about eleven year old Celeste Marconi, who lives in Chili. She is a dreamer, a writer and a collector of words. Her beloved country of Chili has been taken over by a military dictatorship and subversives are in increasing danger. Because of this Celeste’s doctor-parents must go in hiding to remain safe. Celeste, heartsick, must say goodbye to them.

This is an excellent book- a “page turner!” It would also initiate some excellent discussion.

Leadership Team If there are any members interested in being on the Northwest Wisconsin Leadership Team next year, please contact Jan Kienbaum ([email protected]). I have had one person come forward so far, but the council could use one more person. Thanks.

New Northwest Zone Coordinator Terri Lassig from the Midwest Reading Council will be the Zone Coordinator for the reading councils in the Northwest Zone. She will be contacting our leadership team when she has a date for the Zone meeting the end of June.
