Fruit Friend of the Month Nectarine Veggie Visitor of the Month Tomato Brainstormin’ BALANCE Nectarine Humor What do vampires like to eat? Neck-tarines! Nectarine Myth Nectarines are NOT a cross between plums and peaches, but are instead a type of peach. Every once in a while, a peach tree mutates - the gene responsible for the fuzz is turned off, and out comes a nectarine. Nectarine Nutrition Nectarines are a good source of potassium which helps to balance out the sodium we consume. Nectarine Dessert! When nectarines go soft, don't throw them out. It's the perfect time to make a sorbet! Pit the fruit and slice coarsely. Toss into a blender with a few drops of lemon juice and optionally a teaspoon of honey. Blend until no large pieces remain. Pour into individual serving cups and freeze. Delicious! Tomato Funnies What did the macaroni say to the tomato? Don’t get saucy with me! What did the sergeant tomato say to the slacker tomato? Stay Hydrated- Being well-hydrated wards off fatigue and keeps concentration levels strong. To reduce calories and sugar, dilute 100% fruit juice with water for a refreshing drink with a splash of flavor or make it fizzy using carbonated water. 2. Energize your BRAIN- Whole grains provide complex carbohydrates, or a steady stream of energy necessary for a busy school day. Whole grains contain folate and other B vitamins which support memory. Look for whole grains with 5 or more grams of fiber per serving to stay full and satisfied until lunch! 3. Promote Healthy Brain Development- Omega-3 Fatty Acids are heart healthy and promote brain development. Sources include: fish such as salmon, avocado, nuts, and healthy oils. 4. Start The Day With EGGS!- Eggs contain choline which supports neurotransmitters in the brain (chemicals that communicate information through the brain and body. 5. Don’t Forget Your Leafy Greens!- Leafy greens like spinach and kale are packed with lots of vitamins C, K, A & E. Vitamin E is a brain protective antioxidant.
