The Nubian Message:

There is an African proverb thatsays,"Until lions have their own his-torians, the tales of hunting willalways glorify the hunter." I believethat certain members of the estab—lishment are aware that manyAfrican-Americans are not knowl—edgeable of the fact that historicallypublic opinion has not alwaysworked in our favor. Yet, out of thedarkness of misrepresentation came“the Nubian message.” The NubianMessage was established in 1992 byit’s founder Tony K. Williamson.The first issue of NC States FirstAfrican American Newspaper waspublished in November 30, 1992 onthe campus of North CarolinaCentral University. Thispaper was:established as a solution to ourmedia problems. It has been used asa way for students to speak outagainst unfair conditions on ourcampuses, to counteract the unjustmedia coverage of the African—American community, and to keepAfrican—American student abreast ofthe activities occurring in the blackcommunity on this campus.“The Nubian Message has been

created to represent the African—American community at NCSUtotally, truthfully and faithfully. Indoing so, we shall cover everyaspect of African—American life atNCSU,” said it s founder in thepremiere issue in 1992. He furtherstated that, “ The Nubian messageshould and will be the media voicefor African Americans at NorthCarolina State. It will be a publica-gtion in which people can learn aboutdifferent aspects of our culture, aswell as find useful informationabout state s campus.”

With the concentrated efforts ofthe Nubian staff and the support ofthe community, this vision hasbecome a reality. “The NubianMessage” has become a catalyst toresurrect the passion and desire tofurther advance on this predomi—nately white campus. It is impor-tant that everyone realize that thisnews paper is not a racist publica-tion We are not seeking superioritynor segregation; all we want is anequal voice on this campus and withthe Nubian message, the door isopen for us to have that voice.Historically, African-AmericanStudents and blacks in this societyhave not had the luxury of our ownidentity.

According to admissions, 435African— American students wereadmitted to NC. State Universitythis semester. For the 3,757 newfreshmen at NCSU, only 393 wereAfrican— American.

The most recent statistics atNCSU shows that the black studentpopulation makes up approximatly9.5% of the student body. From1995—1999 the graduation rate ofthat 9.5% has not exceeded 7.0%.

What happened to that 2.5% ofstudents who entered State withhopes, ideas and dreams of graduat—ing? Does NC. State really care?

Tracey Ray, coordinator forAfrican- American student affairs atNCSU states, “ the help is definatlyhere for African— American studentsbut it’s up to the students to go afterit.” Ray believes that State hasmade a lot of effort to make sureAfrican- American students feel con—nected.

Competition. amoung universitieshas increased. In order to keep up,NCSU has created the Chancellors

Leadership Scholarship. It is com—posed of a $2500 scholarship,renewed every year as long as stu-dents maintain a 3.5 GPA. TheAfrican- American symposium forincoming freshmen is also an excel—lant way to prepare new students for

Thesementors act as big brother or big sis-ter to first year students, they shareinformation with them about policiesand resources for them on campusand maintain regular contact withstudents to make sure they areadjusting to campus life.A new program that is now up

and running through the office ofAfrican- American student affairs isSABA. This is a tutorial programgeared to empower students anddevelop their skills for academicsuccess. SABA is not only focusedtoward helping students having aca-demic difficulty but also towardshelping students to maintain a highGPA. The counselors of SABA helpstudents with their educational, pro-fessional and cultural aspects of heirlives.

AASAC holds first meeting; plans retreat

S_TA_F£On September 8th, the members of the African—

American Student Advisory Council (AASAC)held their initial meeting in the Witherspoon stu—dent center. Organizations such as the NationalPan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), Dance Visions and“the Nubian Message” were represented by theirexecutive officers.

Courtney Hodge, AASAC president, called themeeting to order by introducing the executive offi—cers. Hodge announced, during the meeting, thatbecause of the work done by her and otherAASAC members, city and county officials haveapproved an on campus voting location. Hodge

also announced AASAC’s participation instatewide minority recruiting.

“Sign up, get all your friends to sign up. This isextremely important,” said Kim McNair, presidentof the Society of Afrikan American Culture andAASAC parliamentarian. The recruitment pro—gram is being administered in cooperation withthe Park Scholars and seeks to increase the num—ber of minority applicants for scholarship awards.

The initial AASAC retreat will be held laterthis month and will be the council’s next meeting.

According to Hodge, the event will either be inVirginia at Dr. Clark’s retreat or in Durham. Afterall questions where addressed, announcementswere made and the meeting was adjourned.

AASAC is composed of representatives from33 African—American student organizations.During the year AASAC serves as a think- tank todevelop strategies aimed to promote issues impor—tant to African-American students.

Also present were the College of Humanities &Social Sciences Multicultural Association forStudents represented by Tina Gillespie, UnitedStudent Fellowship represented by Toby Crandall.the Heritage Society represented by KamillaWright, and Student Government represented bystudent body president Harold Pettigrew and stu—dent body treasurer Michael Anthony.

In 1921, she earned anInternational Pilot's License, makingher the first African Americanwoman to achieve such an accom—plishment.On Labor Day in 1922, she

appeared for the first time as a stuntflyer in the United States.Ms. Coleman was killed during a

test flight in 1926 in Jacksonville,Florida after her aircraft crashed.In 1995, Ms. Coleman became the

eighteenth honoree in the U. S.Postal Service's Black Heritage.Stamp Series. Strawberry Pleads Guilty,Sentenced to House Arrest

TAMPA, Fla. ~ Suspendedslugger Darryl Strawberry pleadedguilty to driving while impaired andleaving the scene of a traffic acci-dent and was sentenced to two yearshouse arrest.

The New York Yankeesoutfielder had spent the night in jailafter his arrest on Monday morning.After pleading guilty today,Strawberry was sentenced to com—munity control, which allows him toavoid jail time but requires him tostay at home except for specificallyapproved outings. It has not beendetermined if he will be required towear an ankle bracelet while underhouse arrest. '

According to a policereport, Strawberry's sports utilityvehicle hit a street sign and a carMonday morning and then contin—ued down a road in downtownTampa. An off-duty officer sawStrawberry‘s vehicle weaving overthe road, pulled the outfielder overand arrested him.

Strawberry was taken into cus—tody and passed an alcohol breatha—lyzer test, but was charged withDWI, a misdemeanor, for the actionshe displayed during his field sobri—ety test. He also was charged withleaving the scene of an accident

Strawberry, who has a history ofsubstance abuse, attributed his poordriving to the prescription sleepingdrug Ambien. Tuesday he wasordered not to drive while takingmedication.

Strawberry underwentsurgery last month to remove a can-cerous tumor from his abdomen. Hewas diagnosed with colon cancer in1998. _The arrest was the latest in a

series of troubles for Strawberry,who earlier this summer dropped outof a drug clinic where he had beenundergoing rehabilitation.Strawberry said he left the SobrietyClinic in Fort Lauderdale, Floridaafter just 3 1/2 months because heneeds to support his wife and chil—dren.

Strawberry, currently serv-ing a one—year ban for violatingbaseball's drug policy, has appliedfor reinstatement. To make mattersworse for Strawberry, SportsIllustrated recently published a pho—tograph of him and an apparentlytopless woman at Trapeze II, a FortLauderdale swingers club.

Major League Baseball suspendedStrawberry in February after con-firming that he tested positive forcocaine in a mid~January drug testrequired under terms of his proba—tion. At the time, Commissioner BudSelig made no provisions for short-ening the suspension for goodbehavior.

Strawberry was banned 60days for failing a drug test in 1995and 120 days last year after pleadingno contest to drug and solicitationcharges resulting from an April 1999arrest.

The 38-year-oldStrawberry played in just 24 regularseason games last season and hit.327 with three home runs and sixRBI in 49 at—bats.The eight—time All-Star missed

the 1998 playoffs after being diag-nosed with colon cancer. TheYankees dedicated the postseason totheir stricken teammate and capturedtheir 24th World Series title.

Once considered a futureHall of Famer, Strawberry admittedto substance-abuse problems morethan six years ago, and his careerhas been wrecked by those problemsand other legal woes.

During eight seasons withthe New York Mets, he won the1983 National League Rookie of theYear award, was a, World Serieschampion in 1986 and led the NLwith 39 homers in 1988.

This is a debate that couldlast forever because there have beenmany great running backs in thehistory of the NFL. When one con—siders who this is, there are manydifferent aspects of the game thatneed to be examined. The first onehas to be statistics; numbers are thefirst things that anyone looks atbecause they Show productivity.Also, other factors such as howgood the runningback makes histeam, and whatgera he runs in canbe looked at as criteria. It is hard todistinguish how a running backcould perform in another era, butthis is still a factor that is used.Some names that might come out inthis discussion are Walter Payton,Jim Brown, Gale Sayers, BarrySanders, OJ. Simpson, and EmmittSmith. Yes, I said Emmitt Smith,not known as the most graceful, likePayton and Sanders, or even themost powerful, like Jim Brown, butEmmitt Smith brings a combinationof all off these styles to the table ashe hustles his way toward the hallof fame.

Personally I can't say whois thegbest, but statistically one hasto give Smith a hard look. In 10seasons, Smith has made an impacton'the NFL that few running backscan compete ‘with. He is the thirdranked- rusher of all time. _- Emmitthas also won four NFLrushingtitles and three Super Bowl titles.His career—rushingtotal of 14, 051

In 1997;, Emmitt'start-ed a new scholarship and mentorprogram to support and encourageat-risk youth to not only finish highschool, but to go on to "college.While we all know that many of ourschools are failing too many of Our}youth, Emmitt took the ball into his.own hands. First, he led ’by’, exam—a .ple and went, back to college in theoff-season to finish hiseducation.Then he started his scholarship pro;gram to help guide qualified stu—dents through the often discourag-

This victory enabledWilliams to take home $800,000dollars in comparison to Davenport's$425,000 dollars. She also swipedthe trophy from her younger sister,Serena.

"I thought he was a really,really good back who was sur-rounded by a lot of talent," saidShelmon in an interview. "Once Igot here, I found out he was a muchbetter back than I had ever givenhim credit for. "

As Emmitt Smith's careercomes to an end, he has to over-come a few obstacles to reach therushing record. Smith did not playin the pre-season, in an effort torest from off-season surgery. Hehas not been injured for a long peri-od of time, but with age, injuriestend to increase, With the recent

Before Dutton'ssuccess as an actor, writer, anddirector, he endured a tough life.

Dutton was born in Baltimore,Maryland on January 30, 1951.Prior to his success in entertainment,

For fatally stabbing a manduring a street fight, Dutton served aseven- year sentence in prison.During a fight in prison with anotherinmate, he was stabbed in the neckwith an ice pick. Dutton refused toretaliate on the inmate, and it wasthis incident that turned his lifearound. It was in prison that hedeveloped his passion and love fordrama. Continuing to serve his sen-tence, he completed a two-year col-lege degree course. After his releasefrom prison, he was accepted intothe Yale School of Drama. At Yale,he studied under playwright, AugustWilson ("Fences"), and director,

Dandridge, is~ a drama about thetragic actress-dancer-singer who wasthe first black woman nominated foran Academy Award as best actress.Dandridge died on September8,1965, at the age of 42. Autopsiesshowed that she died of an overdoseof Tofranil, an antidepressant thatshe was taking. It is still unknownwhether the overdose was intentionalor accidental.

Both Charles S. Dutton and HalleBerry have faced their share of per—sonal setbacks and tragedy.However, because of persistence,faith, and dreams, they have bothbeen able to attain the level of suc-cess in Hollywood that is usuallyreserved for their white counterparts.Both black and white America haveembraced this actor and actress on

Last year while walking down Gormanstreet at night, I was stopped and questionedby Public Saftey. The reason was simplybecauseI was a black man. In fact, the offi—cer told me so.

"Son, we had a description come over theradio of a black male. You're a black male,what do we do?"

Simply put, this was racial profiling at itsbest. While I was standing there on the sideof the road, sorrounded by at least threesquad cars, lights shined in my face; Irecieved a message loud and clear. My darkskin, my existence as a black man, makesme a suspect. No matter how well I dress, nomatter how proper my diction, how well Idot my "i"s, all of that does not matter. I ama suspect.

Indeed a few days ago, I was sitting insidemy dorm room when I over heard a conver—sation going on outside my window. The

Well if you are one of those people, thenlisten to what I have to say because youobviously do not get it. If that girl had madethe announcement of "some white guy," thecommon reaction would have been one of,"why did she say white?" The bottom line isthat a description as basic as that would nothave cut it. Attached to the white male labelwould have been: short hair, blue eyes, thickbuild, early 20s, about 5-10. There wouldhave been more identifiers in order to distin—guish the "suspect" from all of the other

white males in the residence hall. For somereason, when the skin is dark, all that doesn'tmatter.And if any of you are wondering, after my

run in with Public Safety, I had a meetingwith the Assistant Director of Public Safety,Mr: Terry Wright. Also present were anadministrator and a director on campus. Mr.Wright, if you are ready to follow throughon the things you promised me over 8months ago, you have my number, I am stillwaiting.

Perhaps this is just the way it is, maybe Ijust need to get used to my "suspect" status.I know my grandfather'had to. I wonderwhat would have happened to him if he hadwrote an article like this in North Carolina.

Well, no time to ponder such things, pub—lic safety just sent me a crime alert.
