LETTERS fROm THE ACTIVE CHAPTER

LETTER fROm THE PRyTANISDustin McKenzie (Nu #1078)

History tends to repeat itsel; au Kappa Epsilon at NuChapter has once again ound itsel in a huge transitional period. However, need or concern is vastly unwarranted. Despite theact that we have graduated 18 extremely benecial Fraters (who

have made up the two past ocer corps) we have also broughtn 25 men who have already begun to make enormous changen KE-Nu. Te achievements and accolades o the chapter

have only multiplied in the last semester. Case in point: For theecond year in a row, and or the third time in ve years, KE-

Nu has been awarded the op eke Award. Tis award goes tohe top 10 chapters throughout the nation, based on academics, hapter size, recruitment, community service, alumni relationsnd extracurricular activities. KE-Nu joins USC as the only

op eke chapters in Caliornia, and one o only three west o he Mississippi. KE is growing quickly, and it is growing with

he right kind o men who will help continue to build o o what KE has become, and push au Kappa Epsilon to its nextevel.

KE continues to be one o the most impressive housesn the Cal campus. We currently have 64 actives, 16 pledges,nd everyone is embracing the brotherhood to its ullest. Tis

next semester we will see the house ull to its capacity withntelligent, social and well-rounded men. More importantly, the

majority o these men are reshmen, sophomores and juniors.Tese Fraters will continue to leave their mark or a number o ears as the house continually grows larger.

Academically, KE is still among the best on campus. We were just ranked sixth best GPA on campus out o the6 raternity houses in IFC. Last semester we hit the books

hard and boosted our GPA to 3.36 collectively as a house. Our goal this semester is to see each member’s GPA rise andcademic goals met. Te work ethic o the brothers right now s phenomenal and I see each and every one o us reach our goal, not surpassing it.

Philanthropically, our chapter and Nationals haveontinued to strengthen our bond with St. Jude Children’s

Research Hospital. Tis semester we have begun planning

ur Battle o the Bands event to raise unds or St. Jude’s. Lastear this event raised over $1,800 and drew in more than 150eople rom the Berkeley community. Tis year we hope tourpass $2,000 or St. Jude’s, and see over 250 individuals athe event. In addition, we surpassed last semester’s goal o 500ommunity service hours by providing over 800 hours o timeo the Berkeley community. We continue to raise our goals, andhow the community how caring the ekes are!

Te bottom line is that KE has continued its upwardrend this semester. Te Nu Chapter o au Kappa Epsilon

is thriving right now, and we are operating better thanhave in the past. Our members are all passionate abouhouse, and making it the best house at Cal. I cannot to see what we can do to end this semester and startnext. Tis is a very exciting time to be a eke. Tankor your continued support, and I hope to see as manyou as possible around the house soon! Go KE! Go B

mESSAgE fROm THE EPIPRyTANISEric ye (Nu #1081)

As Epiprytanis I have two main roles in the house. Teis that I am the keeper o the constitution and am responsiblmaking sure the house abides by it at all times. My secondis that I actively manage all 17 chair positions that we currehave this semester. At times this can be a very time-consumduty because I have to be in constant communication withonly all the chairs, but also all the other ocers to ensure thlevels o leadership in the house are working in unison. Butime and energy that I out into my job is constantly rewa when the chairs put on successul events that the brothersalumni can enjoy alike.

Tis semester I eel the house is in a better position thhave ever seen in my our semesters as an active brother, in terms o how successul our events have been (includiphenomenal rush), as well as the strengthening o the b  within the house. Furthermore, knowing the younger currently in the house, I have no doubt that we will continu

improve in all aspects o what it means to be KE in the comyears.

mESSAgE fROm THE gRAmmATEUS

David Herschorn (Xi #1104)

I am so proud and excited to be an ocer o our raternity ight now. We were just named a top KE chapter or lastemester, and it is simply thrilling to see how everything isoming together right now. Indeed, as an ocer corps, we are

delighted with the success o our members in their pursuits, hankul to our alumni or their support and laying out the

historical oundation or what we have continued, and ready to

nish out this semester strong. As Grammateus, I have just nished building a large,

Plexiglas-covered calendar that hangs at the bottom landing the stairs on the rst oor to keep everyone up to date onvents. I have been successul in increasing my meeting minuteseadership over the last semester, but am now starting to ocusn what our ocer corps will leave behind.

So ar I eel that our ocer corps has done many thingsight, and I hope to codiy that to pass on to the next and alluture ocer corps. I am working on a set o orms and a diary-ike outline-based system or ocers and key chairs to record

heir thoughts about what they did during the semester, andhow they did it.

Chapter Advisors Peter Cloven and Steve Schmidt seehemselves as the keepers o institutional knowledge o the

house, and do a very good job. However, small details such ashe way we set up and prepare or certain events, and how variousituations were handled, can still get lost over the years with theurnover o the house. I hope to stem this and implement aystem that will allow uture chapter leaders to build on today’successes to make an even stronger KE Nu.

As or me, I am a junior Developmental Studies Environmental Economics and Policy major. I plan to spthis coming spring semester in Washington D.C. (as Frater Paulino is doing right now), but will be back in the house Fall or my senior year. It’s strange to think that in less thamonths I will be graduating, as so much has changed or mthe past two years. Te one thing that has kept me centered

on track, though, has been my brotherhood that is always tor me, and that I cannot even imagine having gone throcollege without.

mESSAgE fROm THE HyPOPHETESKyle Meshna (Xi #1092)

Tis semester I am trying to improve scholarship brotherhood by going to the library with dierent peevery week in order to promote good study habits w

getting closer with each brother. I am going to continuthrow un brotherhood events, and am currently planningsemester retreat. Since becoming a brother, I have seenbrotherhood and morale o the house drastically increase, asee it continuing to rise in the uture. Nu Chapter truly isKE.

mESSAgE fROm THE HOUSE mANAgER  Josh Feldman (Xi #1090)

Tis semester we have taken the initiative o re-landscaour yard. We have taken out several trees and extended theto make our patio more accessible and attractive. We hopalso add a bike rack and tool shed to the back yard in the uture. KE has meant so much to me over the past two ysince I have joined. I have met so many o my best rihere, and I can’t imagine what my college experience woul without being a member. I am so excited about what wgoing to accomplish this year with such a great group o m

urselves as young men to be the responsible, determined andnuential men o tomorrow. Trough my candidate educationrogram, I learned how important six words and one paragraphan be in becoming a successul and morally excellent person inhe lie ahead o me.

Being the most recently installed ocer, as Hegemon, aswell as being a recently initiated brother (Pi class), I have beenble to create a new approach in instilling these values as a KE

Nu. I believe that the bond we share as a house is strongerhan anything that I have ever witnessed. A common saying, opposites attract,” can be clearly seen in our house. Every rother supports diversity wholeheartedly, and this is somethinghat I have been proactively promoting to the new class. I plano teach the most recent candidate class the importance o theix pillars, as well as the ninth paragraph, and how these words

will guide them through this semester, as well as through theest o college and beyond.

mESSAgE fROm THE CRySOPHOLOSAlvin Yi (Xi #1097)

I am a third year Economics major rom San Jose, and I amery excited to be entering my second semester as Crysophylosor Nu Chapter.

Last semester I made it a goal to increase the transparency o ur chapter’s nances with the members-at-large and I believehat I have made signicant progress keeping the chapternormed. I have been holding open budgetary meetings and

have been working very closely with Epiprytanis Eric ye in

helping individual chairs prepare responsible budgets. I alwaysnd mysel amazed at both the creativity and execution o thesehigh quality events.

I believe that our chapter as a whole has achieved a new evel o nancial responsibility, and I have no doubt that KEwill continue to improve over time. It has been an honor towork with this ocer corps, and I look orward to a antasticemester.

My name is Drew Flood. I am a third year History majornd Global Poverty Minor rom San Diego, and I am the Rush

was especially exciting, because I already had the experience o ne rush under my belt, so I really elt comortable in assuminghe responsibilities o Rush Chair, and making a strong imprintn the uture o the house.

My name is Ryan Jensen. I am a third year Psychomajor rom San Clemente, Caliornia. Tis being my secsemester as Rush Chair, I elt that my experience last sem was helpul as great insight in planning events and recruitigreat pledge class.

Tis semester we tried to emphasize the need or stbrotherhood involvement in making rush as un and ecas possible; and with the help o a great house and h

brother participation we had an incredible rush, ending witpledges, 13 o whom are rst semester reshmen, and creaa bright uture or Nu Chapter o au Kappa Epsilon. Rho class appears to be a very strong group o individ  who could potentially represent the values and ideals oraternity extremely well, and I am greatly looking orwartheir possible membership in the house. KE is importanme because o the bonds and true riendships I have withbrother in the house, and I believe that these young menprove to be ne additions to Nu Chapter. I look orwarpursuing new positions in the uture and urther contribu

When it comes down to it, I joined the chabecause I love the brothers – brothers who I know will supme and always have my back.

One o the main reasons I joined this raternity is becausemembers o au Kappa Epsilon consistently motivate each

So in ttwo weeks my Dad and I rebuilt the ence to keep the cout, set the headstones back in place, made new markerthe 32 unmarked graves, and built a new gate and sign o

entrance.“Summer ended with a class reunion or the King

High School classes o 1980-85. Tis was my 27th year reunion, and it was a blast. Pictures o me that night, in athan sober condition, continue to surace on Facebook, helme to remember how much un I actually had.

“Now I’m in my 20th year as a teacher and my year at Lowell High School in San Francisco.”

nd thus ar it has been nothing short o amazing. Besides theights and experiences I have been having, I have also beenery busy with work here. For the past six weeks, I have beenworking or an environmental consulting rm, Te GreenHouse (www.tgh.co.za) located in Cape own. Tey are a smallniche consultancy, but collaborate with various partners onheir projects.

One o the projects is a survey o the entire coalndustry in South Arica. Te rm has been hired by the

Department o Minerals and Energy to evaluate the currenttate o the coal industry. I have been primarily doing researchor them, including processes o extraction, transportation,mporting/exporting and much more. Tis is a very big project, onsidering that 90% o all coal reserves in Arica are located inouth Arica. Tis project will be used to strategically plan theuture o the industry while understanding the eects as South

Arica moves toward renewable energy.I am also helping with the development o a Low

Carbon Action Plan proposal or the government. We haveeen hired by the World Wildlie Foundation to work withther partnerships to create a workable solution or climate

mitigation. And lastly, I am conducting Lie Cycle Assessment work withinhe dairy industry. We have been working with all aspects o the

dairy value chain, and are working closely with armers to helpower their carbon ootprints. My responsibility on the project isesearching dairy concentrates in an attempt to understand theirontribution to the dairy industry’s environmental impact.

Te company owners got their PHDs at the University o Capeown, and still do a lot o work with the University. Tis hasllowed me to attend meetings and seminars with them, as

well as other aculty members. Tis work is exposing me to allorts o great experiences and people. For instance, I was athe University the other day, meeting with chemical engineers, conomists, policy makers and others to collaborate on theoal industry project. Te work that the Green House doess very interdisciplinary and covers a wide range o issues. My xperiences with the Green House and in Israel have reinorced

my commitment to environmental issues and motivated meoward entrepreneurship because I have directly observed theignicant impact new and innovative businesses can have.

I will be returning to Caliornia around Tanksgiving, which is when I plan to complete my graduate school applications.Currently the Bren School at UC Santa Barbara is my numberne choice. I have visited the campus a ew times with riends

who are currently in my prospective program. I plan to getmy Masters in Environmental Sciences and Management with

ocus in eco-entrepreneurship.Beore beginning graduate school in the Fall o 2011, I

m considering several options to gain additional eco-businessxperience, including an eco-architecture project in Haiti.

Because Haiti is slowly rebuilding its inrastructure, many nvestors are looking or sustainable development as a means or

both environmentally and economically viable options outure. However, I am still searching or other opportunand would appreciate any suggestions o opportunities come my way.

I will continue to stay in touch, and am very interein hearing responses and updates about Fraters’ current busendeavors and projects they will be working on in the uture.
