ARTIST: Vestard Shimkus, piano Richard Wagner’s music was rarely performed and recorded, and so the listeners heard usually piano transcriptions. However, Vestard Shimkus presents not only transcriptions which were simply transferred, but he deals with the music in a creative way. One such treasure – the monumental „Fantasia in Fsharp minor WWV22“– with its countless operatic recitatives and long singing themes – is a welcomed addition. His own transcription of „Isoldes Liebestod“ was written especially for this album. When creating it, Shimkus listened to an orchestral recording of this piece over and over again and let his imagination be inspired by particular textures of Wagner’s orchestration until he had the definite idea of how to express it on the piano by using the fantastic possibilities offered by a piano of the 21st century.

BIS SACD 1773 Label Code 419 Price Code P Pavane Maurice Ravel: Pavane pour une infante défunte Gabriel Fauré: Après un rêve, Op.7 No. 1; Élégie, Op.24; Romance, Op.69; Pavane, Op.50 Richard Dubugnon: Incantatio, Op.12b; Lied, Op.44b Claude Debussy: Clair de lune; La fille aux cheveux de lin ARTISTS: Maxim Rysanov, viola; Ashley Wass, piano In his Treatise on Instrumentation, Hector Berlioz wrote of the viola that ‘the sound of its strings is particularly telling, its upper notes are distinguished by their mournfully passionate accent, and its quality of tone, of a profound melancholy, differs from that of other instruments played with a bow’. In devising the present programme, Maxim Rysanov could almost have been inspired by this description, and by the affinity between the timbre of the viola and the particular colours in French music. The pieces – all arrangements – by Ravel, Fauré and Debussy are bathed in an atmosphere of calm beauty with a hint of melancholy. Framed by two Pavanes, they include perennial favourites such as Après un rêve and Clair de lune, performed by a player who ‘couldn’t make an ugly sound if he tried’ and who ‘better than almost anyone else is able to bring out the beauties of the viola’ according to reviews in International Record Review and on website klassik.com respectively. Two contemporary pieces are included – both of them by the Swiss-French composer Richard Dubugnon (b. 1968), described as belonging ‘to a tradition that looks back to Ravel by way of Dutilleux’. Incantatio and Lied, both for viola and piano, are adaptations by the composer of existing works, made especially for Maxim Rysanov. For BIS Rysanov has previously recorded a solo disc (with three of Bach’s cello suites) as well as his own arrangement for viola and orchestra of Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations. He is here partnered by the eminent British pianist Ashley Wass.

BIS SACD 1828 Label Code 419 Price Code P Yevgeny Sudbin plays Liszt, Ravel & Saint-Saëns Franz Liszt: Funérailles; Nos 10 (Allegro agitato molto) and 11 (Harmonies du soir) from Études d’exécution transcendante; 3 Sonetti del Petrarca Maurice Ravel: Gaspard de la nuit (Ondine, Le Gibet, Scarbo) Camille Saint-Saëns: Danse macabre (based on the transcription by Franz Liszt) ARTISTS: Yevgeny Sudbin, piano Following a series of highly acclaimed recordings dedicated to individual composers, Yevgeny Sudbin has combined works by Liszt, Ravel and Saint-Saëns into a recital with the three-stranded theme Love, Delirium and Death. First to make its presence felt is death, in Funérailles, Liszt’s grandiose elegy for his Hungarian countrymen who died in the 1849 uprising against Habsburg Rule. It reappears in Ravel’s depiction of a hanging – Le Gibet (The Gallows) from the triptych Gaspard de la Nuit – and closes the programme in Saint-Saëns’ Danse macabre in which Death personified provides the music for a morbid ballet of corpses, playing a fiddle and tapping his foot on a tombstone. Love enters the programme with the Petrarch Sonnets, originally song settings by Liszt of three of the many poems in which Petrarca immortalized Laura, the object of his life-long but unrequited passion, and later reworked for piano solo by the composer. A similarly hopeless attraction is described in Ravel’s Ondine – the tale of a water nymph tempting a mortal to join her in the depths of the lake. Delirium, finally, is present throughout the disc – most manifestly in the nightmarish portrait of the goblin Scarbo, but also as an essential ingredient in many of the other works. The programme thus poses a huge challenge for the performer in terms of transmitting a wealth of super-charged emotions and images while simultaneously negotiating immense technical demands – a worthy task for Sudbin, whose Scriabin interpretations were described in BBC Music Magazine as being ‘as terrifyingly changeable and emotionally all-engulfing as the music itself’, while his Rachmaninov disc to the reviewer in Piano Magazine revealed ‘a musical dramatist of exceptional acumen and sophistication; a poet who moves seamlessly between unbridled rhetoric and extreme intimacy; a stylist who catches the particular spirit of everything he plays…

BIS SACD 1856 Label Code 419 Price Code P DVORAK – Symphony No.9, ‘From the New World’ Antonín Dvorák: Symphony No.9 in E minor, Op.95 (‘From the New World’) Czech Suite, Op 39; My Home, overture, Op.62 ARTISTS: Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra / Claus Peter Flor The most gripping Dvorák to come along in many years’ is how website Classics Today described the recently released disc with the composer’s Seventh Symphony, performed by Claus Peter Flor and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. This was quickly followed by the same team’s recording of Symphony No.8, and now the turn has come to Antonín Dvorák’s final work in the genre: Symphony No.9 – the ‘New World Symphony’. It was composed entirely on American soil, and the composer himself acknowledged that it ‘would not have been written this way if I had never seen America’. Nevertheless, and contrary to what is often claimed, he also maintained that he had not used any existing material, but ‘simply written original themes embodying the peculiarities of the Indian music’, developing them ‘with all the resources of modern rhythms, harmony, counterpoint and orchestral colour.’ Those themes, and Dvorák’s use of them, have exercised an irresistible attraction on audiences, ever since the first triumphant performance in 1893 at New York’s Carnegie Hall. The following year, Dvorák himself conducted the first Czech performance of the symphony. Perhaps to demonstrate to his compatriots in the audience that his heart nevertheless remained in his homeland, the composer included the overture Muj domov (My Home), composed some ten years previously. Part of the incidental music for a play, the overture is based on two popular songs, one of which, Kde domov muj (Where Is My Home), would later become the Czechoslovakian national anthem. On the present recording these two works frame another of Dvorák’s ‘nationalistic’ works, the light-hearted Czech Suite, consisting of five movements, all based on the dance rhythms of Bohemia, Moravia and Central Europe.

BIS SACD 1982 Label Code 419 Price Code P MENDELSSOHN– Lieder ohne Worte (I) Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Sechs Lieder ohne Worte, Op.19b (1832–33); Sechs Lieder ohne Worte, Op.30 (1835); Sechs Lieder ohne Worte, Op.38 (1837); Sechs Lieder ohne Worte, Op.53 (1841); Five Individual ‘Lieder ohne Worte’ (1828–37) ARTISTS: Ronald Brautigam, piano (after an instrument by Pleyel 1830) If claims could be made for a certain composer to have invented a genre single-handedly, Felix Mendelssohn would be a strong candidate with his ‘Songs without Words’. The term itself can be traced back to 1828, and a letter in which Fanny Mendelssohn mention having received a ‘song without words’ as a birthday present from her brother. Although Mendelssohn continued an existing tradition of writing short lyrical pieces for the piano, the concept of ‘wordless songs’ was new, and indeed the great majority of the Lieder ohne Worte display some sort of song-like structure (melody in the upper voice, an accom-paniment that is predominantly chordal or arpeggiated, ABA-form). Immediately popular with a wide audience, and soon a staple ingredient in domestic music-making all over Europe, the Lieder ohne Worte were also highly regarded by fellow composers, who imitated the style of Mendelssohn’s pieces, and sometimes adopted his title for them as well. One such admirer was Robert Schumann, who was captivated by the ‘Duett’ (Op. 38, No. 6), hearing in it: ‘lovers… conversing quietly, intimate-ly and confidently’. (The piece was in fact written for Cécile Jeanrenaud, who would later become Mendelssohn’s wife.) Gathered on this disc are the first four books of the eight published collections of Lieder ohne Worte (two of which appeared posthumously) and an appendix consisting of five individual pieces which Mendelssohn never included in any collection but which nevertheless belong to the genre. One of today’s leading exponents on the fortepiano, Ronald Brautigam has released complete sets of the piano music by Mozart and Haydn, and is currently recording a highly regarded series of the solo piano works by Beethoven. For the present disc he has chosen to play on a replica by the renowned maker Paul McNulty of a Pleyel instrument built in 1830, and thus contemporary with the music performed on it.

ACCENT 24253 Label Code 086 Price Code F VENETIAN ART 1600 The new instrumental style by G.B. Fontana and G.B. Buonamente ARTISTS: Le Concert Brisé/Dongois The first sonatas composed at the beginning of the seventeenth century reflect the fundamental change that has taken place in vocal music around 1700. Starting out from the Florentine Camerata, the new style of recitar cantando developed, and laid down the foundation for the emergence of opera and madrigal. The appearance of an autonomous instrumental music, which was to become typical in the seventeenth century and which is relatively independent of the vocal models, is one of the consequences of this musical revolution. Two representatives of this generation of composers are Giovanni Battista Fontana and Giovanni Battista Buonamente, and it is no coincidence that both were violinists. The autonomy of the instrumental music goes hand in hand with the growing importance of the violin, which gradually replaced the cornett in sacred music. This music is at the crossroads of all the influences and all the usual musical forms of the time. One can hear recitatives and arias, as well as sections reminiscent of organ toccatas. Accordingly William Dongois and his ensemble Le Concert Brisé have entrusted the melodic parts in their exciting recording of sonatas and dance movements by Fontana and Buonamente to violin and cornett, and it is fascinating to hear how this music characterises both echoes of the vocal music as well as typically instrumental diminutions and virtuosic passages.

ACCENT 24267 Label Code 086 Price Code F GOTTFRIED FINGER The Complete Music for Viola Da Gamba Solo ARTISTS: Ensemble Tourbillon/ Petr Wagner Coming from Moravia, composer and virtuoso Gottfried Finger was active throughout Europe. In the course of his life he worked in London, Munich, Vienna, Berlin among other places, and finally in Mannheim, where he was concertmaster of the upandcoming court orchestra, dying there in 1730. It is known that he had mastered several instruments. In addition to the viola da gamba, he also played trumpet, violin, lute, recorder, bassoon, baryton and eventually the cello. He was certainly one of the greatest viola da gamba players of his time, and wrote some of the most elaborate and technically demanding pieces for that instrument. Finger's viol da gamba music reflects AustrianCzech as well as English and Italian influences. During his lifetime, only his Opus 1 appeared in print, an indication that his work is only being rediscovered gradually. The present CD, with the Czech viola da gamba player Petr Wagner and his Ensemble Tourbillon, is the first complete recording of Finger's works for solo viola da gamba. The composer demands from the soloist all the technical and musical abilities available in his day, and covers a broad range of highly virtuosic to poetically elegant works. So Petr Wagner as in his recording, highly acclaimed by the critics, of the Pièces de Viole by Roland Marais (ACC 24229) – can now prove his complete mastery with Finger's solo viola da gamba works.

There the years around 1600 had seen ground-breaking developments in vocal music, such as the seconda prattica characterised by the clear division between a single melodic line and a supporting continuo bass. Now instrumental music was becoming important in its own right, and soon the violin was recognized as the ideal vehicle for a new style which is obvious already in the very first trio sonatas, such as Giovanni Paolo Cima’s Sonata a tre from 1610. The term ‘trio sonata’ is a later expression, and in 17th-century Italy the terms commonly used were ‘Sonata a due’ (two melody instruments plus continuo), and ‘Sonata a tre’ (three melody instruments – usually two soprano and one bass – plus continuo). The form could also vary, from ‘free’ sonatas to sets of variations, chaconnes and passacaglias. From this almost bewildering variety, London Baroque has selected 16 works which chart the development from the origins of the genre to its ‘coming of age’ with Arcangelo Corelli, in the 1680s. Already famous in his own lifetime, when he was one of the most influential composers in all of Europe, Corelli is an exception among the composers featured here: many of his colleagues are all but forgotten today, and little is known about their lives. There are also great gaps in our knowledge about the music itself – for instance regarding the instrumentation (what kind of cello would have been used?) and the use of ornaments.

CHRISTOPHORUS 77360 Label Code 034 Price Code F HEINRICH ISAAC Ein Frölich Wesen (A cheerful nature) Secular and textless music ARTISTS: Les Flamboyants; Michael Form A "cheerful nature" is ascribed to Heinrich in a letter, in which the replacement of the court Kapellmeister's post in Ferrara is dealt with, and Isaac is compared with his rival Josquin. "A cheerful nature", however, is at the same time the musical pattern for several settings by Isaac, and therefore became the title of this CD. As was usual in his time, Heinrich Isaac, in many of his works, used settings of other masters as models and reworked them as new works of art. So Michael Form and his ensemble Les Flamboyants, in this CD of Isaac's textless music – that is to say instrumental music have documented the first blooms of instrumental music, which was slowly evolving at the time. It is helpful for this recording that the wellknown "hits" of his day, which Isaac skilfully incorporates into his works, are performed vocally – thus they are between the elaborately ornamented and at times virtuosic instrumental parts and easy for today's listeners to follow.

FARAO CD 108069 Label Code 126 Price Code C ERMANNO WOLF-FERRARI Violinkonzert & Orchestermusik aus Opern Concerto for violin and orchestra in D major, op. 26 Orchestral music from operas Il campiello Le donne curiose L'amore medico I quatro rusteghi ARTISTS: Benjamin Schmid, violin; Oviedo Filarmonia; Friedrich Haider, conductor Friedrich Haider brings the music of Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari back into the limelight Amidst all the turmoil of war in the years 1940 to 1943, Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari composed a violin concerto in the festive key of D major. The composer's ability to distance himself artistically from what was happening in the world was often called “anachronistic” and described as “composing with blinkers on”. No one knows what the composer was thinking and feeling at the time. An intense encounter with the great violinist Guila Bustabo was what inspired him to write this composition in a melodic, romantic tonal language untouched by the contemporary trends of modernity. The two artists were enchanted by each other and carried on a spiritual friendship, largely by correspondence. The composition is a declaration of love: “For Guila Bustabo in admiration” is written in the score, and her letters to him respond in kind. The first performance took place in the Munich Tonhalle in 1944. Bustabo was partnered by the Munich Philharmonic under Oswald Kabasta. Why this inspired violin concerto has since led a marginalised existence, all but completely neglected in everyday concert life, is incomprehensible. Thanks to Friedrich Haider, the German-Italian Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari has experienced something of a renaissance over the past few years. Ever since the conductor came across a score by this composer in a London second-hand bookshop, he has been fascinated by this music and become an ardent champion of the almost forgotten master.

GLOSSA 32107 Label Code 119 Price Code F OSSUAIRES Office for Elizabeth of Hungary by Pierre de Cambrai ARTISTS: Graindelavoix; Björn Schmelzer The first in a trilogy of recordings exploring religious, social and political discourses around 13th century music sees Björn Schmelzer and Graindelavoix set off on a journey across Europe, reflecting on the medieval working world of the artist Villard de Honnecourt who was responsible for a collection (still in existence) of drawings made in connection with the new Gothic cathedrals then being built. The travels of Villard took him from Cambrai to Vaucelles and Reims, and then across Germany, Switzerland and Hungary and in this first volume, Ossuaires (ossuaries being receptacles for holy relics), the lines of this journey unite medieval Northern France and Hungary: musical treasures performed here concentrate on an Office for Saint Elizabeth by Pierre de Cambrai and Volek syrolm thudothlon (an example of an early Hungarian poem being set to music from France). The characteristic and imaginative approach of Björn Schmelzer, along with his Graindelavoix singers, stands back from preconceived notions of how such medieval music may have been sung, and aligns itself instead more with the working practices of artists such as Villard de Honnecourt (examples of the draughtsman’s work are included in the CD booklet), medieval and modern artists embellishing and improvising, combining and recycling their materials from a practical perspective.

GLOSSA 921207 (2 CD Set) Label Code 119 Price Code F ARCANGELO CORELLI SONATE À 3, Opera Quarta Roma 1694 ARTISTS: Ensemble Aurora; Enrico Gatti The appointment in 1689 of Pietro Ottoboni as Cardinal of San Lorenzo in Damaso marked the beginning of one of the most splendid epochs of patronage of the arts in Rome. A passionate lover of music, Ottoboni gave his protection to numerous musicians: Handel, Pasquini, Scarlatti and Caldara all at some point worked at the cardinal’s court. A few months after his election, Ottoboni took into his service the famous violinist Arcangelo Corelli who was employed not only as first violin and leader for the instrumental music, but had complete control also over the sumptuous musical events. It was his Op. 4, the final collection of trio sonatas that Corelli presented in 1694 as the expression of gratitude for the protection he had received from Cardinal Ottoboni. The set of twelve sonatas constituted the culmination of a symmetrical production that alternated collections of church (Op. 1 and 3) and chamber sonatas (Op. 2 and 4) and helped to establish Corelli’s music as models in the definition of these two genres. In a recording made in June 2012 in Solomeo, in the region of Umbria, Enrico Gatti infuses these works with his special elegance and lightness, with his Ensemble Aurora creating once more a reading of the highest order which any admirer of the best of Baroque Italian music will wish to return to, again and again.

His influence on music and the violin was so great that he is even described as the founder of the French violin school. In 1733 Leclair’s success finally led to a position at the court of Louis XV as an “ordinaire de la musique du roy”. For the king, however, it was not enough to take only one outstanding violinist into his orchestra, but shortly afterwards he engaged JeanPierre Guignon (17021774) and later LouisGabriel Guillemain (17051770), also evenly matched rivals, which led to a violent longstanding power struggle. This rivalry is stimulating, and there emerged from the court of Louis XV an exciting repertoire of French violin music, which is worth rediscovering today. With the Baroque violinist Leila Schayegh and her accompanist Jörg Halubek this journey of discovery has been made with topclass performers Schayegh's last CD of sonatas by Franz Benda won the Diapason d'or in 2012. Arising from this fascinating story about fate and the intrigues of violinists under Louis XV, the programme gives us important details about the musical life at the court of Versailles and the evolution of violin music in France.

NEW PAN 10279 Label Code 250 Price Code F Louis Heudelinne & Charles Henri Blainville LE DESSUS DE VIOLE: Music for Trebic Viol from 18th century Paris ARTISTS: S. Eckert; H. Ratsmusik The moral ideas in eighteenth century France banned women, for reasons of "propriety", from playing most instruments because the "physical posture" clashed with "moral decency", according to a contemporary source. The treble viol, which because of its small size is not held between the knees but is played (with closed legs) on the lap, was one of the exceptions. The "dessus de viole" or the "pardessus de viole", pitched a fourth higher, is rarely heard as a solo instrument, but the treble viol only gained some importance for the first time towards the end of the eighteenth century. The viola da gamba player Simone Eckert devotes this double CD to two important French composers for the instrument. Louis Heudelinne was a contemporary of Marin Marais, but, despite that, he did not succeed in gaining a foothold in the Versailles court of Louis XIV. Stylistically, the works of both composers are quite close, though Heudelinne's pieces for treble viol are basically conceived as melody driven. His Livre Premier, which appeared in 1701, stands out through its extremely high technical level, exhausting all the possibilities of the treble viol. Double stops, arpeggios and virtuoso runs display all the agility and virtuosity that is possible on this instrument.

675754042776

Even Charles Henri Blainville, who above all made his name as the author of theoretical writings, was not among the most celebrated and successful musicians of the court. In the heated debate on whether the French or the Italian style is preferable, he clearly took neither side, and so his Sonates pour le Dessus de Viole, which appeared c. 1750, reflect French as much as Italian influences.

Reisenberg made history with her never before attempted feat of playing all the Mozart Piano Concerti in a weekly, coast-to-coast radio series. For the last thirty-five years of her life, chamber music gave her the greatest personal satisfaction. In the 1950s and 60s, she appeared with the Budapest Quartet on numerous occasions, and among many memorable concerts, she played all Beethoven's Cello-Piano Sonatas with Joseph Schuster, then first cellist of the New York Philharmonic. In 1980, at age 76, she joined the Juilliard Quartet at the library of Congress for the Mendelssohn and Faure works heard on this release.

This recording presents works from two very different composers, both united through their mastery of orchestral colouring and evocative imagery: Khachaturian's Spartacus and Gayane suites are infused with enchanting Armenian influences, and enjoyed a deserved popularity with Russian audiences that helped protect him from the worst of widespread artistic suppression during that era. Following these, one of the jewels of orchestral repertoire, Ravel's Dahpnis et Chloé was composed for Diaghilev's Ballet Russes dance company and has remained a popular work to this day.

The two composers represented here symbolize two entirely different eras in Russian music – Lyapunov from the end of the Romanov Empire and Khachaturian from the height of the Soviet Union – yet their works are perhaps more an expression of continuities, of perennial concerns for Russian composers, such as the need to integrate folkloric elements with the demands of sophisticated musical structures for concert performance, and adherence to the great Russian traditions of violin-playing that go back to the middle of the 19th century. Ms. Udagawa is a renowned exponent of the Russian romantic tradition, and this disc follows two previous releases with Signum: Rachmaninov, Works Piano and Violin (SIGCD164) and Romantic Novelties for Violin and Orchestra (SIGCD224).

Following on from the recording of the complete trios of Antonín Dvorák (Supraphon), the renowned and critically acclaimed Smetana Trio have taken the logical step of recording a Johannes Brahms album of the same ilk. As a pianist, Brahms earned admiration back in his childhood and later on many occasions even premiered his own pieces. Almost four decades span the first trio Brahms wrote, at the age of twenty, and the last. Besides piano trios in the traditional configuration, he composed a trio for horn and a trio for clarinet. The sound of the horn, an instrument Brahms himself played, was reputedly loved by the composer’s mother and he wrote the horn trio as a response to her death. Brahms created the clarinet trio for the celebrated clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld, whom the composer esteemed immensely. The Smetana Trio’s guests on the new recording are the outstanding clarinettist Ludmila Peterková and the superlative horn player Premysl Vojta, winner of the ARD Munich competition (2010) and holder of a Beethoven Ring.

SUPRAPHON FL 4112 (2 CD Set) Label Code 332 Price Code C Music from Eighteenth-Century Prague Musici da Camera REICHENAUER, JIRANEK, VIVALDI, FASCH, CALDARA, TUMA, POSTEL, ORSCHLER ARTISTS: Sergio Azzolini, bassoon; Lenka Torgersen, violin; Helena Zemanová, violin; Collegium Marianum (on period instruments); artistic direction: Jana Semerádová Recorded in the Church of Our Lady, Queen of Angels in Prague, July 2012, June 2003 and September 2005. Whereas Vivaldi needs no introduction whatsoever and other names (Caldara, Fasch, Tuma) are familiar to lovers of Baroque music, even specialists have only been getting to know the remarkable oeuvres of Reichenauer and Jiránek over the past few years, owing in large part to Supraphon’s Music From Eighteenth-Century Prague series. Prague is that which all these composers had in common; for some of them the city represented a significant part of their career, for others a short episode or merely a way station. The Czech capital was a melting pot in which Dresden, Vienna, Naples and Venice came together and the influences of all the major European musical centres were recast. In aristocrats’ exquisite palaces, and to the delight of their masters, these superlative artists performed their own chamber music, whose originality and splendour we can rediscover today. The CD blends the refinement and spontaneous musicality of the renowned Collegium Marianum with the Italian vivacity of their special guest, the phenomenal bassoonist Sergio Azzolini. The splendour and refinement of the music that resounded in Prague Baroque palaces.

LOLA'S WORLD 2722 (2 CD Set) Label Code 470 Price Code G SUNDAY IN BED volume 5 Sexy sounds for lazy lovers If you decide, in fast times like nowadays, to simply stay in bed for a complete Sunday, no matter if in company or alone, you define yourself automatically as member of an exclusive peer group that puts individuality and autonomy above all. Bravo! This truly aristocratic attitude of getting not involved certainly deserves an adequate outstanding soundtrack. The Clubstar label delivers this soundtrack reliably, 2012 already in its fifth year, with the compilation series Sunday in Bedn. Clubstar does not only play with club and house compilations on the highest level, but also with many other compilation series in the lounge genre. For example with the Sunday in Bed series. The idea of Sunday in Bed is simple and complex at the same time. The music should be easy listening, Americans would call it casual. Nonchalance is a duty. But nonchalance does not mean: optional! Sunday in Bed wants to tickle the ears of the listeners. With the concomitance of big names and underground. With music you know and new, forgotten and unexpected music. Which means coursing through all possible and impossible genres. Serge Gainsbourg, the monolith of modern french chanson stands, with a reggae song, recorded in Jamaica in 1979, next to the great lady of current soul: Erykah Badu. Harry Manx and Kevin Breit, two guitar virtuosos of the US country scene, stand next to Frank Ocean, who is since his performance at the Jimmy Fallon show, beginning of july, the new darling of black music. Maverick Sabre, newcomer of the british blue-eyed-soul, stands next to WZRD. Behind the alias WZRD stands the rapper Kid Cudi, here on Dream Machine in a cooperation with his australian friends from Empire of the Sun. The compilers of Sunday in Bed searched on the internet for the unknown and found the jazz trumpeter Kafele and the texan r&b singer J Metro, two high-class acts that did not even have a record deal for these songs, by the time the compilation was done. The Godfather of Austin Blues, the in Europe completely unknown veteran W.C. Clark, stands next to the Jazzanova spin-off Prommer & Barck, who transform the 70s jazz/rock of Al Di Meola into a furious house track. The Berlin techno scene is featured with Trikski, followed by Phoenix Foundation with mystic soft rock from New Zealand. The highly talented jazz singer José James from New York is on the album, the French rock princes Tahiti 80 and those from Housse De Racket, the british newcomers Toddla T and Matt Henshaw, New York/Paris bohème pop by Ivy and a twelve year old up to date masterpiece of drum & bass by Smith & Mighty. This and much more is Sunday in Bed V. And – surprisingly, the styles and eras connect in perfect harmony. Each song is sophisticated in its own way. And all together are easy to listen to…

With titles like Peanut Vendor, one of the most famous pieces of music created in Cuba; the popular calypso Rum' n' Coca Cola and Yes! We Have No Bananas, the novelty song from the 1922 Broadway revue, the album is absolutely a beckon for the dancefloor.
