Marti Green will discuss how make a successful “Giclee” print and will

answer questions concerning costs, papers, how to get a good image

and so on. Bill Fogarty, owner of Waters’ Edge Gallery will talk about

displaying, framing and selling “Giclee” prints .

There are lots of questions about exactly what a “Giclee” print

is? What is the quality? How long do they last? What is the process?

How to you get prints made? How much do they cost? What paper or canvas should be

used? Who should do prints? Why?

From Marti Green: I have researched printing on 140lb cold press watercolor pa-

per. I have a pastel painting and oil painting I painted , took images of them and ex-

perimented by printing them on watercolor paper. I did find out that it was a little

time consuming getting a color match to

the original pastel, but I did get it pretty

close to where I was happy with it.

I will bring samples and an original with

a print to illustrate the difference. Accom-

panying this article are some images of

prints that I have printed as Giclee prints

which I will bring to the meeting.

The term “Giclee” print connotes an eleva-

tion in printmaking technology. Images are generated from high

resolution digital scans and printed with archival quality inks onto various substrates including canvas, fine

art and photo-base paper. The Giclee process provides better color accuracy

than other means of reproduction.

Bill Fogarty will discuss selling and framing prints in order to achieve a good

finished product.

Subjects such as ink varieties, water soluble inks, conventional stretching and

optional dry mounting of prints, problems with “sagging” and the importance

of sealing with varnish if glass is not used. He will also discuss standard sizes

for prints and digital processors vs. film processors and will also be glad to

From the President-

Hello again—we’ve had a busy month! If you haven’t seen the PAL

Show at TCC in Gig Harbor, make time soon! It will hang until November

25th so you still have plenty of time to enjoy a fine art show—there is great

variety, wonderful composition and color– lots to see! Thanks to Rhene

Johns for pulling off another good show, to Debbie Dorn for organizing the

treats, to all who helped hang the art and keep track of it when it arrived,

and to the Screening Committee for all they do to keep us organized.

Many thanks to Jeanne Crider who has offered to be the PAL Public-

ity person and to new member Patti McQuillan who has offered to take care

of the equipment and the storage unit! Hooray!

We had several members who showed up to hang art and discovered they hadn’t paid their

dues! Please check and make sure you have paid—it is so easy to forget—one year just blurs into the

next! Also, we would really appreciate it if you would all fill out a new membership form—we are

getting lots of checks without accompanying forms and if you have a new phone number or new

email, we need it for the roster! Thanks! You will make Christy Camerer very happy!

When you get to page 7, you will see some of your PAL Board Members in really attractive or-

ange hard-hats—not a good style, I can tell you. We took a tour of the new Museum in Gig Harbor

and were mighty impressed. Hopefully, we will have more news about cooperating with the museum

and using some of their space before too long. This economic downturn has just thrown everyone

into a spin. Plans for a new Arts Campus in Gig Harbor are not dead, but they are on simmer for a

while. The discussion is ongoing!

Happy Thanksgiving to you all—have fun, eat lots, and enjoy! Don’t forget, our PAL Meeting

COLLECTIVE VISIONS GALLERY

I was fortunate enough to be awarded First Place at the Franke Tobey Jones annual juried senior art show for my painting, "Harlem on Laundry Day, ca 1900." Fifty five artists submitted 150 art works of which 68 were accepted.

Mountainside Middle School Sculpture - John Jewel:

With John's interest in education and youth he couldn't have had a better commission. The sculpture is at Mountain-side Middle School in Mead, Washington, just north of Spo-kane. The school committee wanted John to capture the spirit of the 7-8th grade students in their school. He did it ! The sculpture is very joyous and filled with life. It is of a boy holding up an award or a diploma. He used Kurt and Tina Self's boy, Kyle as the model. He lives near us in the Vaughn area and goes to the Key Peninsula Middle School.

John said, "The sculpture reflects the spirit of young-sters across our great country, eager to learn and proud of their accomplishments." During the design stage he worked with an architect who brought the lines of the courtyard toward the sculpture. John said, "That is the way it is in our public schools--parents, staff and community center in on the chil-dren."

For his artist statement on the plaque he stated, " Meaningful learning for every student starts with your enthu-siasm, Character Counts!" He thought this statement applies to everyone. And, thinking about it, it really does! I really en-joyed seeing the kids interact with the sculpture. After the in-stallation, a boy rode up on his bike and proceeded to set up his camera, then ran to get in the picture with it. Later, we saw a girl grab one hand of the sculpture and then raise her other hand in celebration. It was pretty cute and gave us the idea the kids are going to enjoy it.

PAL Member, Arlene Town, was one

Work in Tacoma over last weekend.

This event is just getting bigger and

better every year. Watch for the date

next year and take a drive to see

what’s going on next door.

Arlene shares studio loft space with

other artists in the Jet Artist Coop-

erative in downtown Tacoma—they

have a view of the museums and the

720 Bridge to the North and of Puget

Sound—Wow! It was exciting to see

her creative and colorful paintings as

well as the space where she works.

beauty of the Pacific Northwest for over 60 years. She will discuss the inspiration from her

northwest painter friends which has influenced her photography.

The PAL Board was invited to the new Gig Harbor Museum for a

hard hat tour a couple of weeks ago. Arvid Anderson, Mary McIn-

nis, Virginia Alvarez and Myrna Binion were able to get a glimpse of

just how big and impressive this building is and how important it

will be in Gig Harbor when it is finished.

We are all still interested in building a separate Arts Center

building in Gig Harbor and will keep working toward that goal but

we have to consider the effects of our recent economic problems on

those plans. However, there is a large room in the museum which will be geared toward com-

munity use, workshops, and class work. This might possibly be large enough for PAL meeting

space and for small workshops.

There is still much discussion to take place but we enjoyed the tour and were very im-

pressed with the new Museum space. Maybe we can find a way to fit in and be a part of this

wonderful new building. (Thanks to Mary McInnis for these photos)

NOVEMBER VIDEO REVIEW

For all of you Gerald Brommer fans, we’ve just added his latest DVD to our library and it’s very good. It is en-titled From Line and Shape to Complex Surfaces, and is what he refers to as the ―ultimate mixed me-dia presentation―.

The DVD is divided into four segments. He starts with pencil, then a pen and ink drawing, focusing on a vari-ety of interesting lines. To that he adds shapes in watercolor or acrylic, and a considerable amount of collage. In some of the demos he even adds gesso, so his works are full of interesting texture. He then finishes with more line drawing. I think you will really enjoy this informative DVD. Brommer is an excellent instructor as well as artist. Cecile Anderson

Video Library— For new members and old—we have a wonderful selection of art related videos and DVDs available for your use. They are stored at the Visitors and Information Center on Judson Street in downtown Gig Harbor. You can access them at any time the center is open.

Just go in and ask at the desk or proceed around to the room past the kitchenette and you will see our storage cabinet. Follow the directions - it’s easy—and check out art vids to your heart’s con-tent. Cec Anderson brought a selection of videos to our last meeting and let people check them out and she may do that again in the future. Please use these—it’s a Membership privilege!

March 21st, on Pouring, Layering and Texturing with Watermedia (or bet-ter known as, "Painting with an Attitude and Without a Plan). This will be a great opportunity to explore the possibilities of combining water based materials such as liquid acrylic, gesso, inks, metallics, etc. through the technique of dropping or pouring colors directly onto the paper and building layers. Not limited to abstract painters, the workshop will be an opportunity to: improve your creativity and design, discover new techniques and ways to incorporate realism with abstract, aid you in resolving compositions with a minimum of brushwork, and best of all to "loosen up".... Bio... Tis Huberth has a B.S. degree from Cornell University with graduate credits in art education from Penn State. She has been a full time watermedia artist and instructor for over 23 years. She conducts classes throughout the area, including Daniel Smith,Inc. Seattle, in her Auburn home studio and 5 day Artescape Workshops in Oregon with Margie Mankin. In addition she has served as Juror for many art shows in the region, including Peninsula Art League membership show. Her paintings have been shown nationally as well as locally, winning many awards including Purchase awards from the Renton Annual Art Show and Seatac Annual Art Shows. Tis is a signature member of the International Society of Acrylic Painters and an elected member of the Women Painters of Washington.She is also an active member of the Pacific Gallery Artists, Northwest Watercolor Society, Northwest Collage Society and South Hill Artists. (2) PAL member, Donna Trent, will offer a two day Plein Air Workshop in April for all mediums. If you have ever wanted to try plein air painting and didn't know where to start, this will be an excellent workshop for you. We get lots of comments from people about what an active and in-

teresting Art League we have—it is all due to people giving their

time to organize shows, programs, workshops, screenings, festivals

and to serve on the PAL Board —the list just goes on and on. We

appreciate their time so much and their efforts make Peninsula Art

League the vital and lively community group that it is!

Meeting minutes for PAL 21 Oct 2008

Myrna Binion called the meeting to order at 10:30am at Pt Fosdick Library.

Members present: Myrna Binion, Virginia Alvarez, Rhene Johns, Harry Sundberg, Mary McInnis, Cec Anderson, and Arvid Ander-son.

OLD BUSINESS:

No treasurers report – Jon Lonning was not in attendance.

Minutes from October were accepted as written. Duly moved and seconded.

PAL briefly considered moving some of our money out of Key Bank due to national financial situation but decided against. The worry was that not all of PAL’s funds would have been covered by FDIC Insurance. The situation was discussed with the bank man-ager but there was great reluctance on both sides to move funds. This issue was resolved by congress extending FDIC Insurance to cover $250,000.00 per account in banks—up from $100,00.00.

PAL still needs a publicity chair and an equipment manager. (since resolved)

NEW BUSINESS:

Regional show: Dan Riley and Jo McKeckne (sp?), a team with experience in figure drawing, composition, developing a style, was mentioned as possible jurors. We are still in negotiations. The plan is to hold the Regional Show in the fall of 2009.

General discussion of arts center issues.

Gig Harbor had to lay off 10% of city staff so grants may not be available but there is financial wealth of support for arts in this area. Also see what other towns have done to attract the arts, e.g. Leavenworth, Poulsbo, Hood River (Myrna visited Hood River Arts Center in OR and came away with lots of good ideas) Cannon Beach, etc.

Rhene suggested finding out from Gig Harbor businesses what their goals are for downtown.

Workshops – Mimi is working on Tis Hubert (sp?) doing a watercolor workshop on abstract art sometime in the middle of the coming year.

Member show: Good to go but still working in getting space for the reception.

Screening: Set for this Thursday at 5pm before the October PAL meeting.

Video Library: Cec will bring videos to meetings for people to check out for three weeks after which they need to be returned to the visitor center.

Overhead mirror – storage and transportation: Myrna needs to move it to storage unit. The Program Chairperson(s) will be in charge of moving the mirror to the meeting space when needed.

Harry Sundberg suggested a new idea for PAL. PAL Artists could set up tents on summer weekends at Donkey Creek Park. Include gallery walking map of Gig Harbor. This would be for PAL members only . Harry sees this event as a way to raise interest in art in Gif Harbor and would be geared toward helping local galleries. This would entail discussion with the City of Gig Harbor and a per-son who would be willing to organize the event. There was general discussion.
