A Giclee print is made by having an original painting scanned by a special high resolution machine which creates a digital file. Then a special high quality printer is used to print on paper or canvas. The difference between an off set copy and a giclee print is somewhat similar to regular vs. high definition TV. The ink used to print a giclee is very durable and will not fade for many years.
There are 2 methods to print these files.
One is to print on watercolor paper; this is less expensive and good for copies of watercolor paintings. The paper can be mounted on foam core and shrink wrapped. The second method is to print the copy on canvas and stretch it on a stretcher and varnish it the way the originals were prepared. This creates a copy that really has the look of the original. Original oils can be
printed on paper to save cost and will look good, but not as authentic as the canvas.
