Oh the times they are a Changing
A Night of Appreciation – Lafayette honors six retiring community leaders, Nov. 275:30-8pm, Veterans Memorial CenterTo say that 2018 has been a year of change would hardly define Lafayette’s changing of the guard. We first learned that Chief Eric Christensen was leaving Lafayette in April. Arguably, there are few members of our community that did so much to make our city a better & safer place to live. Then we heard that our school’s Superintendent Rachael Zinn was stepping down. Next were the School Board members who would not choose to run again in 2018. Teresa Gerrin-ger and David Gerson have played a major role in Contra Costa. Not only have they been serving on the School Board for many years, they both worked for the residents of Contra Costa County. Teresa has been State Senator Steve Glazer’s District Director and President of the Lafayette Community Foundation. Da-vid served for many years as the Executive Director of Contra Costa Loaves & Fishes. He oversaw the five dining rooms and the kitchen facility for the program that feeds hundreds of financially challenged members of our larger community. Don Tatzin has served on Lafayette’s City Council for 33 years and this year is his 7th time as Mayor. This is rumored to be the longest serving councilmember in the County’s history. Stroll and Shop shares the stage with “It’s a Wonder-ful Life in Lafayette.” The Holiday Season kicks off with “It’s a Wonderful Life” Friday, Dec. 7th. Presented by the Chamber and sponsored by Branagh Development and The Dana Green Real Estate Team. They have been underwriting the white twinkle lights we all enjoy each holiday season up and down Mt. Diablo Blvd. Festivi-ties begin at 4:00pm and run till 6:30pm. The fun includes a visit from Santa, one-of-a-kind photo ops, live musical entertainment from our local students, a tree lighting ceremony and a holiday sing-along. Hot Chocolate and other goodies will be available and there will be crafts for the kids to participate in. much of the city’s success. Fiscal responsibility, funding for the now 10 year old Lafayette Library and Learning Center, his moral leadership and his civility are all models of excellence. And what better teammate to work with than our City Manager, Steve Falk, who has been in his position for 22 years. Steve will leave his stamp on our community overseeing many important improvements and projects:
• Repair and reconstruction of our failed roads ($30M project)
• General Plan & Downtown Specific Plan
• Construction of the Veterans Memorial Building and the Library and Learning Center
• Regional Housing Needs Allocation, Inclusionary Housing Ordinance, Density Bonus Ordinance, Affordable Senior Housing
• Moved Police Station and Police are realizing the highest rate of arrests and crimes solved in the county
• Dozens of major development projects
• The city enjoys a AAA rating, 10M reserve and no pension obligations
We will miss all these community champions who have truly made a difference to our quality of life in Lafayette. Thank you Richard, Rachael, Teresa, David, Don and Steve!
Renewing Members Renewed in August and September
Our Busy City of Lafayette• City Council heard from four retailers about the challenges they face in the second workshop on the future of our downtown. Staff will now take the information shared and put together some next steps.
• On Wednesday, November 7, there will be another Park Theater Revival meeting. Held at the city offices from 7:30-9:00. Discussion: How to save the theater. The public is invited.
• O’Brian Homes will move forward to re-submit their application for 315 apartments at the 22acre site on Deer Hill Rd. and Pleasant Hill Rd.
• AB 2923 was signed into law on September 30th. This bill gives BART the ability to build housing on the property it already owns at the current BART stations. This bill will have far reaching consequences that preempts local zoning regulations near public tran-sit routes. Your chamber board urged the politicians to oppose this bill.
• The City Council will begin work to find a consultant to recruit a new city manager. This project will most likely take some time.
• The Parking Ordinance has been updated and will be read for a second time at a City Council meeting in November. This review is reaching the four year mark.
• After the City Council approved a new Conflict of Interest Policy for the Planning Com-mission and Design and Review, they got enough push back from the community as to why there is not a similar policy for the City Council. Mayor Tatzin has made a sugges-tion to move forward to address this issue.

On FRIDAY, JANUARY 25, 2019, the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce will honor the Lafayette Business Person of the Year at a dinner at the Lafayette Park Hotel & Spa.
Criteria for Business Person of the Year:
Current Lafayette Chamber of Commerce Member; Is involved with a successful business; Has been involved with either the Chamber or other community based organizations; Their work should support our mission: To promote and maintain a healthy business
climate and to preserve and enhance the quality of life in Lafayette; Someone who has given of their time, money or energy to help make Lafayette a healthy
community where people will want to live, work and shop; Someone who models excellence in everything they do; Someone who brings this community together and/or makes up proud to be a member of
