November 7-8, 2020 Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Think of Sacraments.

Think of Divine Life.

Sacrament of Baptism.

The sacrament through

which God, in Jesus Christ,

makes us His sons and

daughters. To prepare for

reception, call Father Edison @ 924-7111.

Sacrament of the Eucharist. The sacrament through which

God, like a responsible parent, feeds us, with food from heav-

en: His Word, and the Body and Blood of Jesus.

Weekend Masses: Saturday at 4:30 PM, Sunday at 8:30,

10:30 AM and 5 PM. Onsite and livestreaming on

YouTube: Saint Patrick’s Victor.

Weekday Masses: Monday-Wednesday, Friday at 8:30

AM. Onsite and live on YouTube: Saint Patrick’s Victor.

For First Holy Communion, call Donna DeJoode at 924-

2800 for more info.

Family members may bring Holy Communion to other

family members who are sick and homebound.

Sacrament of Confirmation. The sacrament through which

God by the gift of the Holy Spirit strengthens us to give faith-

ful witness to our Catholic Faith. To prepare for reception,

call Elizabeth Johnston @ 924-2800.

Children, older than 7 y/o, and adults who needs to be

baptized, receive Communion and/or be Confirmed, call

Deacon John @ 924-7111.

Sacrament of Reconciliation. The sacrament through which

God’s mercy and love, justice and truth heals the wound of

human sin. Generally offered an hour before each Mass. Please give

the priest fifteen minutes before Mass to prepare for Mass.

Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. The sacrament

through which Jesus continues to heal the sick among us.

Anointing is offered at each Mass on the first weekend of the

month. Or call Fr. Edison @ 924-7111 to schedule an anoint-

ing.

Sacrament of Marriage. The sacrament through which God

calls a man and woman to become visible signs of His Love.

Call Fr. Edison or Deacon John @ 924-7111 for more info.

Sacrament of Holy Orders. The sacrament through which

the mission Jesus entrusted to the apostles is continued in the

Church. To learn more about vocations to the ordained min-

istry, please call Fr. Edison or Deacon John @ 924-7111.

Never miss an opportunity to celebrate a sacrament.

Year of the Sacraments

Christ, Catechesis, Celebration

X. Preparing for Baptism

How does one prepare for Baptism? The Rite itself pro-

vides us important guidance and organizes our disposition.

Rite of Receiving the Child. To the parents. In asking for Bap-

tism for your child, you are undertaking the responsibility of raising him

(her) in the faith, so that, keeping God’s commandments, he (she) may

love the Lord and his (her) neighbor as Christ has taught us. Do you

understand this responsibility? To the godparents. Are you ready to

help the parents of this child in their duty?

The Church takes seriously task of raising a child in the

Catholic faith so that in such task parents are assisted by god-

parents. Their task rests on two pillars: their own observance

of the commandments and their own love for God and

neighbor.

Prayer of Exorcism and Anointing before Baptism. God cannot

co-exist with evil! To embrace God in one’s life entails having

to drive out Satan, and get rid of sin, including original sin.

Blessing of Water and Invocation of God over the Water. Water

in salvation history: cleanses (and so we rid ourselves of our

sins) and gives life (and so we receive and nurture divine life).

Renunciation of Sin and Profession of Faith. The faith that we

profess is the faith of Jesus Christ and his Church, and not

anyone’s personal opinion or subjective interpretation of it. It

is the faith of Jesus and his Church that saves and that par-

ents and godparents must share with their child.

Baptism. To baptize is to plunge, to immerse in water with

clear intent and spiritual force. Our seeking to enter more

deeply in communion with our Triune God must never lose

its intent and force but must grow through life.

Anointing after Baptism. Balsam adds fragrance to the Sa-

cred Chrism. The sweet smell is a wonderful image for the

Holy Spirit pervading the life of the Baptized, as he (she) par-

ticipates in Christ’s priestly, prophetic and kingly ministries.

Clothing with White Garment. We must wear our Christian

dignity at all times, both publicly and privately, and strive to

remain pure and sinless until we come face to face with God.

Handing On of a Lighted Candle. Our Christian witness both

in public and private takes on the image of light in the dark-

ness, sanctifying the world for God.

Ephphatha. Our God speaks and listens, and so must we.

Our ears are opened that we may hear God, and our lips that

we may speak with God, and proclaim the Catholic faith.

Catechism 101

What does immersion in the water during Baptism

symbolize? (CCC 1214) Immersion in the water during

Baptism symbolizes the catechumen’s burial into Christ’s

death, from which he rises up as a new creature.

 Why is Baptism called

“renewal by the Holy Spirit”?

(CCC 1215) Baptism is called

“renewal by the Holy Spirit”, be-

cause it brings about rebirth in the

Holy Spirit, indispensable for en-

tering the kingdom of God.

Why is Baptism called “enlightenment”? (CCC 1216)

Baptism is called “enlightenment”, because in it one re-

ceives “the true light that enlightens every man” (John 1).

What is the first prefiguration of salvation

by Baptism in the Bible? (CCC 1219) The first prefigu-

ration of salvation by Baptism in the Bible is Noah’s ark.

How does Noah’s ark prefigure salvation by Bap-

tism? (CCC 1219) Noah’s ark prefigures of salvation by

Baptism, because by it the faithful were saved through

water.

Instructions for the Weekend Masses

Sign Up! Signing-up ensures accommodation as well as

serves as help as a tracking system. Links are found on

the parish website, and on the parish app. No internet or

smart phone? Please call the Parish Office at 924-7111 to

sign-up. If you fail to sign-up and we are expecting a full-house,

you may be asked to wait until signees are seated, and will be admit-

ted only if there is an available seat.

Be Safe! At all times, please observe: (i) proper wearing

of face mask by covering both nose and mouth, (ii) hand

sanitizing before entering the premises, and (iii) observing

the 6ft social distancing with people not of your house-

hold, especially during Holy Communion and Dismissal.

 Watch the Numbers!

If signees are mostly in small groups of 1 or 2, we can

accommodate ~100 per Mass. If coming as a small

group, please occupy the outside section of the pew.

If a good number of signees are in groups of 3 or 4,

we can accommodate ~140 per Mass. If coming as a

bigger group of three or more, please use the inside

section of the pew.

Be Charitable! Consider it an act of charity to occupy the

front pews first. You will make it easier for the ushers to

locate pews for those who arrive after you.

Better Stay at Home. If you require for yourself more

than 6 feet of social distancing from others, for health

reasons, it is better that you stay at home during this time.

If you participate in the celebration of Holy Mass via live

stream and wish to receive Holy Communion, email Fa-

ther Edison ([email protected]), to set-up a time

when you can come over during the weekday.

Ushers, Help! With the safety protocols currently in

place, it is clear that ushers do play a crucial role at every

weekend Mass. We need additional help. If you can assist,

please email Father Edison and let him know at which

Mass you can help and how often. We are truly grateful to

ushers who serve during this time. Also much appreciated

are volunteers who help with the camera for live stream-

ing. Thank you for your help!

The Sacrament of Baptism

“Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Chris-

tian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the

door which gives us access to the other sacraments.

Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons

[and daughters] of God; we become members of Christ, are

incorporated into the Church and are made sharers in her

mission: Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through

water and the word.” ~Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1213

Reborn: A New Creation. To

understand the wonder of Baptism,

we must go all the way back to crea-

tion itself and the unique, life-giving

place of water and new life shown

there. From there, we watch the story of Baptism in salvation

history unfold, first in the nation of Israel and culminating in

the work of Jesus and his Apostles. The stage is set for this

very moment in time: the moment when each individual is

baptized and brought into newness of life, fellowship with

God, and the community of faith. This is the beginning of a

new life and a new creation.

2020-21 Building Projects

Dear parishioners,

The peace of Christ be with you!

With the replacement of the church boiler, we had com-

pleted the last of our 2019-20 building projects. On this third

year of our building projects, we had not solicited for dona-

tions because we were able to use our budget surplus and

some of our stable patrimony.

As we now plan for the 2020-21 building projects, we

have on our proposed list the following and the estimate cost:

 Exterior of the Church: $93,290

Exterior of the Parish Office: $44,140

Exterior of the Parish Center: $64,127

Of these three projects, the exteriors of the Church and

the Parish Office are considered a priority. We currently have

$70K in our Building Fund.

Kindly share your thoughts with me, Rich O’Donnell or

members of the Finance Council about our capacity to raise

$131,557 to tackle all three projects or to raise $67,430 for the

church and parish office projects for next year.

We appreciate your input.

Thank you, and God bless you.

Waiting and Preparing with Wisdom.

Resplendent and unfading is wisdom,

and she is readily perceived by those who love her,

and found by those who seek her.

- Wisdom 6:12

One of the most important virtues we encounter in the

Scriptures is wisdom. So important is this virtue that it is per-

sonified or depicted as a person, a woman to be specific. It is

highly encouraged to seek wisdom and those who seek her

will find her. Those who find wisdom find a treasure unparal-

leled, for wisdom is eternal like God.

For taking thought of wisdom is the perfection of prudence,

and whoever for her sake keeps vigil

shall quickly be free from care;

because she makes her own rounds, seeking those worthy of her,

and graciously appears to them in the ways,

and meets them with all solicitude.

- Wisdom 6:15-16

In the Old Testament, the third group of literature (the

other two being the Law and the Prophets) is dedicated to

wisdom: Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs,

Wisdom, and Sirach.

Wisdom literature complements direct revelation, that is,

God revealing Himself in His own words, for example by the

Ten Commandments of the Law, and by the words of com-

fort and reproof given through the prophets. Wisdom litera-

ture is prayerfully discerned through the practical aspects of

life, often learned through many years of living, from dealings

with whatever life brings.

Those who gain wisdom are able to discern good and evil

in daily life, able to nurture good and to shun evil. For this,

they are undeterred by life vicissitudes. Complemented by

their knowledge of the Law and the Prophets, the wise have

learned to trust and rely only on God. Lady wisdom has a

counterpart: she is folly, often depicted as a prostitute.

Jesus was very clear: he did not come to abolish the Law

and the Prophets but to fulfill them. He, too, had the same

attitude with regards to wisdom, making wisdom part of his

teachings, and encouraged his disciples to be wise -

"The kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins

who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.

Five of them were foolish and five were wise.

The foolish ones, when taking their lamps,

brought no oil with them,

but the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps.

- Matthew 25:1-4

In the Old Testament, wisdom is personified, in the New

Testament, Jesus is wisdom. Jesus is the bridegroom whom

the wise virgins wait for in expectation.

In this parable, Jesus may be thought of as one who is yet

to come to those waiting for the Messiah. And indeed, Jesus

has come. Those who seek him may encounter him through

the Gospels, in particular, and such relationship is nurtured in

prayer. In this parable, Jesus also presents himself as the one

who will come the second time, at the end of time. The wise

are those who live in in-between times, that of the first and

the second comings, waiting and preparing.

What do we learn from the wise virgins?

No one knows when Jesus the bridegroom will come the

second time. Jesus clearly says, “Therefore, stay awake, for you

know neither the day nor the hour”. The wise focus on Jesus.

They look forward to that definitive meeting with him,

that could happen today or tomorrow.

It is important to use the time wisely, by being prepared:

the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps. The time of wait-

ing is not a time to be idle but is a time of preparation.

The extra flasks of oil represents the fruits of wisdom -

attentiveness to Jesus and intense focus on living accord-

ing to his Gospel day in and day out. The wise think like

Jesus, speak like Jesus, and act like Jesus. It is for this rea-

son that such oil cannot be simply shared. It is not that

the wise virgins were selfish and keeping their oil to

themselves. The foolish chose to not think like Jesus, to

not speak like Jesus, and to not act like Jesus. The foolish,

so to speak, had refused the oil and it was too late when

the wanted it for themselves.

Mary, Seat of Wisdom, pray for us.
