The HR Central - Central Iowa Chapter of the Society of Human Resource Management 1 NOVEMBER 2016 A Letter From The President By Terry Welker, SHRM-SCP Central Iowa Chapter of SHRM 2016 Board of Directors President Terry Welker President Elect Katie Stull Board of Directors CISHRM welcomes articles of interest to the HR community for The HR Central. The HR Central is published monthly. Please contact the CISHRM Chapter Secretary for submission information. Welcome to November…. I actually have to write this column prior to the first of the month so I was going to say “I’m glad the elections are behind us now,” but somehow that seems a little disingenuous writing this the last day of October! I certainly will be glad when the political ads disappear from my mailbox and the TV commercials stop airing. On a brighter note, we are starting to wrap the year up at CI-SHRM and what a year we’ve had. Next month, I’ll do a “year-in-review” segment so you can see your CI-SHRM team in action. For this month, I think the best approach is the most direct….. don’t forget about the balance between work and home (or family). This month, focus on leaving when you are scheduled to leave (earlier if possible), and really try to get home at a decent hour. Have dinner around a real table and ask your kids about their day! (I know some of you do this now, but too many of us put work in front of family too often). The holidays are coming and we’ll most likely have some family time then, but there seems to never be enough time to “fit it all in” before January 01 rolls by and we welcome in a new year. That is why I say focus on family now…. Before the holidays, before the shopping, before the stress…. (well, you get the picture). As far as CI-SHRM business goes, we are still looking for two Board positions to fill this year. We need a Treasurer and a Legal/Legislative VP to complete our executive team. If you are interested, the formal application process is on-going (see our website). You are welcome to contact me directly (or Katie Stull, our President-Elect), if you think this is a challenge you would like to consider. We would love to chat about joining the Board. Whatever your needs may be, when you are not at work or with your family, consider joining us for our next chapter meeting at Noah’s in WDM on Tuesday morning November 8 th , 2016 (7:15am- 9:00am). Until then, take care and be safe.

Welcome to November…. I actually have to write this column prior to the first of the month so I was going to say “I’m glad the elections are behind us now,” but

somehow that seems a little disingenuous writing this the last day of October!

Before the holidays, before the shopping,

before the stress…. (well, you get the picture).

As far as CI-SHRM business goes, we are still looking for two Board positions to fill this year. We need a Treasurer and a Legal/Legislative VP to complete our executive team. If you are interested, the formal application process is on-going (see our website). SummaryWe are hearing a lot these days about how the generations in the workplace differ from one another. This isn’t just sensationalized journalism – today’s workforce is comprised of the most culturally, technologically, and psychologically diversegenerations ever.

Additionally, we are frequently reminded that Millennials are the future of business, but what exactly does that mean for hiringmanagers today? A shift has taken place in the workforce, from the “Baby Boomers” and the “Gen Xers” to “The Millennials.” In order to find, attract, hire, and retain this tech-savvy population, leaders first need to understand who thisgeneration is and how to tap into their “hot buttons” during the interview process.

Learning about the attitudes, values and motivations of the three major generations in today’s workforce and how they impact the interview and hiring process is imperative for effective hiring.

Equally, and sometimes even more, important considerations are the generational characteristics that may lead your chosen candidate to accept or decline your job offer. Learning more about the characteristics of the three major generations in today’sworkforce covered in “Hiring in Today’s Workplace” should make hiring your next qualified candidate a little easier.

Our speaker will discuss:

Generations in the Workplace - an Overview

The Millennial (Video) Introducing the Millennial What’s Important to Millennials in the Job Market

Behavioral InterviewingAsking the Right Questions to get the Right Information

Personal Biases to Avoid when Relating to Generations during the Interview Process

DMACC is sponsoring this program and Kathy Forst, Senior Manager DMACC will present. It has been approved for one hour of general HRCI credit. We have applied for one hour of SPHR credit as well.

Wouldn't you enjoy being a professor for an hour? Sharing your experience and expertise in a college classroom central Iowa might be one of the most fun hours you spend in college...ever!

The Young Professional and College Outreach Committee is forming a closer relationship between CISHRM and local colleges by facilitating contact between professors and CISHRM members who would like to be guest professors for a class. When you take the opportunity to share your expertise with the faculty and students, they will gain a realistic view of HR from the experience of a practicing HR professional. You and CISHRM will gain by developing contacts with local college faculty and students as a source of interns, employees and CISHRM members.

Please take a minute to complete the College Resource Speaker information form on the following page by December 15th. We will share it with local colleges early next year. We promise it will be fun and fulfilling. You won't even have to grade any papers!
