    Childrens Week Dinosaur Party

The Childrens Week Dinosaur Party was a great success. Despite the

wintery weather, children and their families braved the wind and rain

and made their way to the Albany Library.

The theme for the event was Dinosaurs. Many children came dressed

for the occasion, with some very impressive dinosaur ouits being worn

    with great pride.

The Library was abuzz with children and families enjoying story me,

making sock puppets, nding dinosaur fossils, playing with play dough,

producing dinosaur masks, creang shadow puppets and so much more.

It was great to see so many mums, dads and grandparents enjoying theacvies as much as the children. Jamie the Clowns very entertaining

show and an amazing stair case performance by the Just Fiddling

    ensemble was enjoyed by all.

Local Community Organisaons gather annually for Childrens Week to

celebrate the importance of children and families. The aim of these

events is to promote the importance of providing children with posive

early experiences to establish a solid foundaon for their future.

Amity Healths Communies for Children team organised the event in

partnership with Albany Public Library , Rainbow Coast Neighbourhood

Centre, YMCA, Department of Local Government and Communies, WAMuseum -Albany, Kids Central Great Southern, Relaonships Australia,

Southern Edge Arts, Vancouver Arts, Wanslea, and 4 Families.

Thank you to all the organisaons involved. It was a day greatly enjoyed

by all the children and their families.

Schools are the second most frequent locaon for

childhood injuries to occur aer the home, ac-

counng for just under 12% of all injury presenta-

ons to the Princess Margaret Hospital Emergency

Department. During the past nancial year there

were 2,291 individual presentaons to the PMH

Emergency Department by children injured at

school, with the latest stascs showing that more

than 60% of recorded school based injury presenta-

ons occur in primary school aged children between

5 and 12 years of age.

Bumps and grazes are a normal part of childhood,

however there are some injuries that have severe

and lasng eects. To help prevent injuries at

school Kidsafe recommend the following ps:

Make sure adequate supervision is provided

while children are in the classroom or at play

Ensure playground equipment is appropriatefor the intended age group and that it is not

used in inappropriate ways e.g. sing on top

    of monkey bars

    Avoid over-crowding in play areas

Promote the use of safety equipment for

    sporng acvies e.g. mouthguards, helmets

    and shin pads

Check that your school has suitable safety

    structures and procedures in place

Kidsafe WA supported by the Princess Margaret

Hospital Foundaon coordinate the Safety in

Schools Program to promote safety and injury pre-

venon throughout primary schools in Western

Australia. Currently primary school students can

enter the Get Creave about Safety Compeon,

including the Spot the Hazards Colouring In, Design

a Comic Strip and Online Treasure Hunt. There are

great prizes to be won, including vouchers, book

packs and rst aid kits. Entries close Friday the 7th

    Food Safety and School Lunches

Low risk foods such as hard cheeses, freshly cooked meats and poultry, fresh, well-

washed fruits and vegetables, canned tuna or salmon, shelf stable snacks and sand-

    wich spreads

When buying lunchboxes choose ones which are easy to clean and dry. Insulated

lunchboxes are a great idea, but not if they are dicult to keep clean

    CHOOSE

    The temperature danger zone

Food poisoning is caused by bacteria and viruses in our food.

Cooking food kills them but its important to prevent cooked food

becoming contaminated again. Food poisoning bacteria mulply

rapidly in food with a temperature between 5 and 60C. Keeping

perishable food below or above these temperatures can prevent

    bacteria growing.

When preparing food, always pracce scrupulous hand washing

Lunchboxes and reusable drink boles must be thoroughly washed and dried daily. If

cracked, split or crazed, replace as bugs love hidey holes

Ensure cung boards, benches and utensils are clean and dry

Wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly

Make sure lunch foods are cooked properly in the rst place.

When reheang, make sure they are steaming hot all the way through sr or turnfood as appropriate.

Lunches can safely be prepared a lile ahead of me provided they are kept in thefridge or frozen

When leaving home, pack a frozen juice box, water bole or commercial ice pack

with the lunch. Place perishable foods such as cheeses and sandwiches between the

    frozen items.

Lunchboxes kept inside the school bag will keep cooler longer especially if the bag is

away from heat sources such as direct sunlight.

Make sure lunchbox foods have been well separated from other foods in the refriger-

ator, parcularly meats, chicken and sh, the juices of which will contaminate foods

which wont be cooked before adding to the lunchbox, such as fruits.

Informaon sourced from Food Safety Informaon Council www.foodsafety.asn.au

Packing a lunch for your child is a healthy and cost eecve opon

however food poisoning bacteria can grow quickly, especially in hot

weather and in the healthier foods such as salad and cold meats.

You can reduce the risk of food poisoning if you CHOOSE, CLEAN,

    Fruit and Vegie Fun at

Mt Lockyer PlaygroupBueries, celery men and a horse are just some of the edible fruit and vegetable creaons kids and parents

of Mt Lockyer Primary School Playgroup made during one of their weekly sessions. Acvies with food are

not only fun and engaging for children; they also provide a valuable opportunity to develop skills across arange of areas. For example:

Allowing children to use age-appropriate utensils such as vegetable peelers, melon ballers and kid-

safe knives and geng them to use their hands to arrange cut -up fruit and vegetables helps develop

    ne motor skills andindependence.

Talking to and quesoning children about the shape, colour and size of dierent fruit and vegetables

and asking them to explain their creaons helps develop language skills.

Geng kids to eat their vegetables or try new foods can be a challenge. Oering vegetables in a new way

and involving kids in their preparaon are just a few ways to try and overcome this. Another great thing

about doing food acvies in a group like the Mt Lockyer Primary School playgroup have done, is that when

children see their peers eang a certain type of food they are more likely to try it themselves.

Mt Lockyer Primary School playgroup is lucky to be located next to the school garden and the children were

able to pick fresh broad beans and herbs to add to the fruit and vegetable creaons. Another highlight of the

morning for the kids was feeding the le over scraps to the worms.

Mt Lockyer Primary School playgroup is run on Wednesday mornings 9-11am during the school term. If you

are interested in aending this fantasc free playgroup contact Chrisne on 9841 1166 or
