    It Only Takes 5 MinutesOn a typical Australian summer day, the temperature inside a parked car can be up to 30 higher than

    the outside temperature. 75% of the temperature rise occurs within 5 minutes of closing the car andleaving it, 90% of the temperature rise occurs within 15 minutes, so its a risk to leave your children

    in a hot car for even a short amount of time.

    As the temperature inside the car begins to rise, the humidity increases while the airlow decreases.

    The rise in temperature causes the child to begin to dehydrate and develop heat exhaustion. Youngchildren are more sensitive to heat than older children and adults, and are at greater risk of heat-stroke. The younger the child, the greater the risk . Hyperthermia, dehydration and asphyxia can alllead to death. Concurrently, the child may also become distressed and try to get out of their restraint;

    this may also increase the risk of strangulation on the harness.

    It is safer if you need to leave the car, even to run a quick errand, to take the children with you. Do

    not use the car as a baby-sitter substitute. Plan to complete quick jobs such as refuelling the car

    when you dont have children with you.

    Dads CornerMost fathers will agree it not easy

    being a Dad especially if it is yourfirst time being a parent. There aremajor upheavals to your everydayexistence, sleep will no longer be agiven, daily routines go out the door,financial expenditure will increaseand it will change your sense of whoyou are. Those first few months canbe extremely confusing and also open

    up parts of a mans persona that hedid not know existed.

    Considering most men will be at work for a good percentage of the day,bonding will need to be established after work and on the weekends. Newfathers will need to open a dialogue with their partners about the fatheringrole and how best to support the mother emotionally, practically anddomestically. Taking responsibility for domestic chores in the first few

    months will unburden the mother and provide needed rest and support.

    The health system and health settings show little support for dads and newmothers must be aware that sometimes dads feel like an unwanted guest.Child Health Nurses generally visit when fathers are at work and any visitto hospital generally takes place during the day. For men to have a positiveinfluence in childhood development they must be included as part of the

    team and not kept on the periphery.

    There are many positives of being an involved father and taking partresponsibility brings many emotional benefits. Having hands on approachwill mean that the child in the future will understand that parenting isdelivered by both the mother and father. New dads do have a positive roleto play in infancy and beyond and commitment to your role is paramount

    in your childs development and welfare.
