Dear Readers

Girl Child- God‟s Own Gift is an attempt to address an issue that has

been one of our gravest concerns for a very long time but has rather

not met an appropriate solution. The theme despite its sensitivity was

taken up to let our students be the voice of change. This is a miniscule

attempt of Don Bosco Senior Secondary School to contribute to the

society and also give an opportunity to our young amateur writers to

put their opinions, perspective and feelings into words.

This edition has focussed on the positive aspect of a girl child, thus

offering an optimistic outlook to the theme. Our cover image sends out

a powerful message of how a WOMAN -the procreator of life, the

mother of tomorrow; shapes the destiny of civilization. Yet, she is

wrought with discrimination even before her birth. A girl child ought

to be given the freedom to dream, plan and reach for the stars. This

precious gift of God must be allowed to grow and blossom into a

beautiful individual.

Thus, the making of this magazine has not only been a learning

experience for our students but has also brought about a positive

change in their perspective.

Girl Child-God‟s Own Gift is a tribute to all the daughters, mothers

and to every relation that one enjoys as a woman.

Dear Students, Teachers, Parents and Friends,

Let me begin by congratulating the English Faculty for taking the initiative to publish our E- magazine

„Girl Child - God‟s Own Gift‟

In the Holy Bible, the book of Genesis speaks about God creating man and woman. We find that God wanted

woman to be the best part of his creation. It is said that creation of man was God‟s duty but creation of woman was

God‟s choice. As we honour the girl child through this magazine, I would like to present a lady model for all girls

and women. She is none other than Mother Mary, the mother of God and mother of all of us. Let us understand how

Mary becomes a model for all women through 5 C‟s:

1. Mary was a common woman.

2. Mary was the chosen one.

3. Mary was a woman full of commitment.

4. Mary was a compassionate woman.

5. Mary was a courageous woman.

So, let us take Mother Mary as our role model and pledge to respect a girl child by:

1. Avoiding discrimination against girls.

2. Not treating girls as an object of pleasure and commercialization.

3. Empowering girls by making them aware of their rights and privileges.

4. Raising our voice and protesting when media portrays girls as a sex symbol only.

Let me end with a small story. On the first day of their marriage, a wife and husband agreed not to open the door for

any visitor. That same day, the husband‟s parents came to see them. The husband wanted to open the door for his

parents but since they had an agreement, he did not. After a while, the same day , the wife‟s parents came visiting.

Even though they had an agreement, the wife with tears in her eyes whispered, “I can‟t do this to my parents” and

she opened the door. Years passed by, they had two boys. Afterwards they had a third child which was a girl. The

father planned a lavish party for the new born baby girl. Later that night, his wife asked him the reason behind such a

big celebration for this baby girl, while they did not do so for her brothers!

The husband simply replied, “My little girl will open the door for me!”

Truly said, your little girl will hold your hand for only a while but will hold your heart for a lifetime.

Once again I want to thank the English Faculty for their endeavour.

Thanking you,

Fr. Anthony Fonseca

What a girl wants to say !!!

I‟m an issue since my birth

Oh! Why, why I‟m born on earth

I see everyone gloom

But nobody wants me to bloom

Boys live peacefully

But no one treats us equally.

I wish I was a boy, so that I could also enjoy.

“GIRL CHILD - GOD‟S OWN GIFT”

Born to a King,

And grew up to be a Queen

Or born in a hut,

To keep care and clean.

A girl child is,

A true form of Goddess;

The backbone of our family,

She is gentle and modest.

Mother, daughter or sister

She is caring in all forms;

Goddess Laxmi, Durga are also women,

Then why not allow a girl child to be born?

Kalpana Chawla, Mother Teresa,

Women are now in all fields;

Then why not allow them to live,

Let them follow the path of their dreams.

Today a girl,

Mother tomorrow;

She keeps us happy,

And hides her sorrow.

Some people think she is a burden,

Some say “Her work is in the kitchen”;

But without her life is nothing,

Then why put barriers to her education.

“DISCRIMINATION”

On the basis of gender!

Why don‟t people understand,

That Girl child is the God‟s messenger.

Let me live Let me live! Let me live

Let me bloom, like a beautiful moon.

Let me come! Let me come!

I want to fly, like a beautiful bird.

Don‟t be selfish ! Don‟t be selfish!

I want to swim like a colourful fish.

Let me see! Let me see

This beautiful Earth

Don‟t kill me before my birth.

A Girl child! Our tomorrow

“It‟s a girl! said the doctor to a couple in a hospital

Wow! That‟s good news! said the bearing parents

However, the relatives were not that ecstatic.

After all, she‟s a burden to bear until her marriage!” they said.

She‟s my little girl! said the father. She‟s not a burden to bear.

She‟ll grow up to become someone special….

Yes gone are the days when girls were considered inferior to boys.

Today, they are proficient in every field.

She is a mother, a sister, a daughter and a wife.

She is also an architect, a boxer, a pilot and an astronaut.

She is endowed with sensitivity, care and love.

Do not underestimate her power.

On her shoulders lies the future of the world.

In her palms she holds our tomorrow.

Proud to be a Girl

I‟m proud to be a girl child,

Because girls are always mild.

Girls are not naughty like boys,

But girls love to play with toys.

Girls are really really brave,

That they won‟t get scared even in a cave.

Girls are really smart,

Not like boys who make a tart.

I‟m really proud to be a girl,

Because girls are always free to twirl.

But girls have the quality of God,

And boys only like to hold a sword.

Dual Roles Of A Woman

T he term dual denotes double. In today‟s fast paced

materialistic world, it is inevitable that a woman has

to contribute financially to meet the growing needs of the

family. In the bargain, she dons the dual responsibility of

going out to earn as well as manage the home front. In

some cases, she may also be the sole bread earning

member which makes it all the more difficult.

She endeavours to do justice to both her roles by trying to

be a perfect mother as well as a model employee. She tries

to absorb the pressure at both these places and ensures her

family doesn‟t bear the brunt of her stress. Most often she

ignores her fragile health too. Her primary concern is

always the happiness and welfare of her family.

A woman is always seen as an epitome of sacrifice. It is

indeed commendable that she juggles her chores. We need

to understand her, make her life easier and appreciate what

she does. The greatest example I have in my life is that of

my mother. I salute her self- giving nobility and

generosity.

Role of Women

There goes an old saying that “ Behind every successful

man lies a women.” There is no replacement for the role

of a mother, wife, sister or daughter-in-law in the society

today. She is the sole member of a family that everyone

depends on, be it for household duties, cooking or even

educating her children.

She fulfills all her responsibilities well and keeps

everyone happy. A women is God‟s greatest gift to

mankind. Her heart is filled with love, care and

understanding for all the people she comes across.

We can proudly say that without women, today our

country and the society around us would not have

received the heights it has achieved, be it Mary Kom,

Sania Mirza, Smriti Irani and many others.

They have made our country and our nation proud. They

fulfill both their duties at home and at work with ease and

are happy to be of service to everyone who comes to them

for aid.

“Don‟t let a girl part from a mothers hold, they are worth way more than gold.”

Empower the girl child “A woman is the full circle. Within her is the power to create, nurture and transform.”- Diane Mariechild

She is powerful, she is valiant. She is intelligent, perspicacious and preeminent with a propitious future

ahead of her. She is eager, her eyes shining with the desire to learn, gain knowledge. What does she

need? The push, the encouragement. Empowerment.

It is a sad yet true fact that gender discrimination is still prevalent in our country. Not all of the girls have

been given a chance to promulgate their talents. They have been suppressed by the stigma of the

inappurtenant thoughts of some societies. It is truly unjust not to let them prove themselves and

contribute to the success of the country. Their education should be of paramount importance. For, as it is

very rightly said, „If you educate a man, you educate an individual, and if you educate a woman, you

educate an entire family.‟

All of the girls in India, whether rich or poor, can contribute to its progress. They are equally capable of

achieving success and bringing pride to the nation. If a girl believes in herself, identifies what she wants,

and follows her dreams, nothing in this world is impossible for her! Girls can not only reach the sky, but

can also hold it up, if need be, that is the unlimited strength they possess. A woman must not accept; she

must challenge. She must not be awed by that which has been built up around her; she must reverence

that woman in her which struggles for expression.

All they need is the invigoration and inspiration. This too they can find in themselves and in all those

who encourage them. Women are shining in many different fields in today‟s world and that is proof

enough that they are just as competent as men are! All we need to do is accept the truth, abolish all the

preposterous notions and of course, do our bit of the empowerment.

“There is no tool for development more efficient than empowerment of women.”

Women in politics

“Every country deserves to have the best possible leader and that means women have to be given a

chance to compete. If they‟re never allowed to compete in the electoral process then the countries are

really robbing themselves of a great deal of talent.” – Madeleine K. Albright

Really, these words are true. A woman is not small in any field. From being a housewife to a politician,

she is admired by everyone. In politics, a woman plays a very important role.

In a country like India, it becomes even more difficult for a female politician as caste, creed and religion

play decisive role in Indian politics.

It‟s true that most of the successful women politicians in this country owe their success to their family‟s

political background; nevertheless, nobody can deny them the credit for putting in hard work and

displaying requisite acumen for not only surviving but carving a separate niche for themselves.

Some women in politics are Smt. Sushma Swaraj, Smt. Mayawati, Smt. Uma Bharati etc.

While female competitiveness in the workplace seems to be on an upward trend, it still has not matched

the income level of male counterparts. In politics, women have competed in presidential primaries and

have yet to win presidency. There is still a lot that women have to overcome even in a society which

prides itself in ideals of equality. Yet perhaps more promising are women in the global world. Today, the

plight of women is significantly improving in the Middle East, especially in countries like Egypt and

Afghanistan.

“If we are going to see the real development in the world, the real investment is women.”

Goddess: A Woman Form Worshipped

A Goddess - a female deity with supernatural powers.

Goddesses also rule over creation. A Goddess protects

humans from malevolent creatures. She spreads

prosperity and love among people.

A woman can also be related to a goddess in many ways

because of her strength, endurance, love, and sacrifices. A

woman takes great care of her children and sacrifices a lot

for them. Just like a Goddess, a woman teaches her

populace and spreads education among them so that they

succeed in life. She has boundless power, is emotionally

stable and is capable of handling an entire house single

handedly. She loves selflessly and is pure at heart. She

has the strength to smile, even when her heart is full of

sorrow.

On one hand, people bow before Goddesses, pledging

their utmost devotion and on the other hand, there are

female foeticides still occurring in some parts of India.

Also, there is widespread discrimination of women in

many fields. They are also disrespected by some heedless

and imprudent people still prevalent in our „modern

society.‟ People need to understand the importance of

women, as they are equally important for the development

of the country and if an utopian society where women are

given an equal status is achieved, prosperity is bound to

follow.

Educate a girl

An African proverb says,“ If we educate a

boy we educate a person. If we educate a

girl we educate a family.” It is so true. But

more than 50% percent of girls in India

don‟t get to go to school. Those who even

get to go to school stop going to school by

the age of 12. A girl is not able to develop

skills and get knowledge because of lack of

education. All this is because of traditional

family philosophy. Malala, a Pakistani girl

fought for her rights and that of other

Pakistani girls. She was shot by a gun right

in her forehead, but was saved.

Nelson Mandela once said,“ Education

is the most powerful weapon you can use to

change the world.” But this weapon should

also be a part of women‟s armoury.” Help

girls get educated. Donate your money in

NGO‟S which help girls get educated.

Educate girls, educate society.

“Courage, determination, commitment, toughness, heart, talent , guts …that‟s what little girls are

made up of. “

Women Empowerment “There is no tool for development more effective than the

empowerment of women”

To wake the people, it is the women who should be awakened.

Once she is on the move, she moves the family, the village and

then the entire nation.

India is also called “Bharat Mata”. The “Mata” in this word is a

woman. Then why is there discrimination against women in our

society, neighbourhood & country? Who says a girl can‟t do

something just because she is a girl? Tell them the world has

changed & the power to make this world a better place lies in

your hand. Every human being born on this planet has the rights

to do things, live comfortably and happily not just fighting for his

rights till the end. Everyone is born equal & we have same blood

running in our veins. A Woman should realize that she can make

a firm foundation for herself by the bricks being thrown at her.

Today the women are a tough competition for men in every

arena, be it school or business. It‟s not the society but the women

who need to realize the strength they have.

A woman should be treated with the same respect and power like

men. Enable and empower a woman. Make the future a safe and

equal place for girls. Just make a better place for you and for me.

A MOTHER‟S PRAYER

When times seem too hard to bear and I feel like giving up

I vision your beautiful face, the twinkle of your eyes and things of such

The bond we created from my womb to the day you were born

Is a mother and daughter bond that can never be torn

With the strength and guidance of God and the blessings he pours down from above

I want to be the best mom I can be to you and embrace you with all my love

You are as precious as a flower and as gorgeous as a rose

You have been specially made to the very tip of your nose

You are as sweet as honey; such an innocent young child

You are brighter than any star in the sky every time you smile

I want you to be proud of who you are and strive to be the best.

An Unwrapped Gift

A sister, a daughter, a friend I am

A present to the world

But a few seem to be happy with me

It‟s a silence that needs to be heard

You used me and broke me

For your own pleasure

But my shattered mind

Never really found a cure

I can‟t keep silent

For every mistake of yours

As I am not a doll

Whom you can tear apart

Yes, you‟ve judged me

At every stage of life

I can‟t find my fault, can you?

I guess, it‟s a girl‟s strife

Is this how you value a gift?

By tearing it into pieces

Well, I‟ll rise higher than you all

Just like an awestruck skyscraper

Don‟t get angry and jealous

After my victory

You should have known before

That this would be my destiny!

Equality of Women

“Behind every great man, there is a woman.”-Anonymous

Needless to say we all know the meaning of this saying. For

we have heard it countless times; may it be in a movie, a

book or used in general life. But, how many people actually

understand it, well; nobody knows. Since the beginning of

time women have been conditioned to believe that they do

not have any say or any importance in society. They have

been led to believe that they are inferior to men.

But, through the involvement of the government legislature

and the evolving demeanor of today‟s society the differences

between men and women have almost been dissolved, though

prejudices against women still continue. Since Stone Age

women have been equally participating in socio-economic

life as men but woman labor does not receive as much credit

or consideration as man labor does. Actually both men and

women have the same work and responsibilities, then why

the favoritism? The options and opportunities available to

women are not much but we find women dominating every

field.

Women have proved themselves in the past, in the present,

and have the mindset to do so in the future.

As Eleanor Roosevelt once said – “A woman is like teabag –

you can‟t tell her how strong she is until you put her in hot

water.

“If you educate a man you educate an individual, but if you educate a woman you educate a family .”

Girl Child: God‟s Own Gift

W e celebrated one of the most auspicious festivals…Navratri, the festival during which the entire

nation worships the nine incarnations of Goddess Durga....she represents the strength, grace,

intelligence and loving nature of the women. She is caring yet fierce, gentle, yet strong. She symbolizes

the true nature of a woman.

But I am in a fix, I‟m confused... The alarming increases in female foeticide cases have made me

wonder ... Why refuse the incarnation of the very form of goddess we worship...?

The major reason behind female foeticide is the illiteracy of people and desire of a male child. Residents

of small towns and villages think a girl to be an unwanted burden! These villagers reckon a girl child to

be inferior to a male child. The elders tend to love and care for the male child and the female is sidelined.

History speaks of great women changing the world - Rani Laxmi Bai, Annie Besant, Amelia Earhart,

Kalpana Chawla, Indira Gandhi. Amelia was the 1st women pilot to fly around the world. In this 21st

century almost all occupational fields have seen the rising of women. We need to tell people about these

successful and famous women. They are slowly taking over the men. Chanda Kochhar (the C.E.O of

I.C.I.C.I bank Corp.), Indira Nooyi (the C.E.O of PEPSI Co.) are on the peak of their excellence. What if

their parents thought like the illiterates, like the average humans?

Chimamanda was the first African female to write songs for artists of Hollywood. She started the trend of

female revolution in Africa. She is a live example of women‟s strength and the way she affects others

lives. I would like to conclude by adding only a few lines written by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie:“ We

tell girls you can aim to be successful but not too successful; otherwise you will threaten man. As I‟m a

female I‟m expected to aspire to marriage. I‟m expected to make my life choices always keeping in mind

that marriage is the most important. We raise girls to see each others as competitors not for jobs or

accomplishment which I consider a good thing, but for the attention of men. We teach girls they cannot

achieve the freedom that boys do”.

According to me a female is, every bit of a human, a male is considered to be. We are God‟s own gift.

We females are flawless.

Women: An Epitome Of Love

I walk out of my house in the afternoon for a leisurely walk. The weather is lovely and cool, passive wind

blows through my hair. I walk through the town square and I pass Mrs Meyers, who is cradling her twin

babies as well as struggling with huge grocery bags. She gives me a watery smile, which shows me how

beat down she is; the dark areas under her eyes tell me that she has not been sleeping well. I just walk

glibly past her and it amazes me that I didn't offer to help her. As I walk along dazed at my own

callousness, I wonder why she works so hard, slaving day and night for her family. Stupid woman I think

to myself- All that she does for her family is for naught?

I let Mrs Meyers and all the conflicting thoughts that arise in my mind evaporate from my mind as I see

my mother working in her vegetable garden in the backyard. She is singing to herself and she seems the

most content person in the whole world. I grin sheepishly as I stand there watching her. Is she different

from Mrs Meyers? I suddenly realize that they aren't. Both of them are driven and overpowered by

emotions that require absolutely no return in any form; that is devotion and love. And that - we their

family and community is what leads them to extremes of loyalty. They would do anything for us,

expecting absolutely nothing in return. Their selflessness is what makes them worthy of love and respect.

I look out of the gate at the sound of loud creaks and squeaks . I see Mrs Meyers pushing through her

gate and this time; I don't hesitate to help her.

Women Empowerment

„Today in the world of miseries, being a girl is a harm to the community‟ is a myth. Some famous

women have proved the myth wrong. For example Sudha Murty is a famous person, the chairperson of

Infosys Foundation. She has written books which feature some real life incidents that encourage women

to progress in various fields. Another role model is Chanda Kochchar who heads India‟s largest private

bank. These women have achieved their goals by simply working hard.

Swami Vivekananda believed that there is no chance of welfare of the world unless the condition of

women is improved. In the simplest of words it is basically the creation of an environment where

women can make independent decisions on their personal development. This can only happen if there is

a channelized route for the empowerment of women.

A beautiful quote by STEVE MARABOLI:

„‟The empowered women is powerful beyond measure and beautiful beyond description.‟‟

Today's Daughter Tomorrow's Mother

T oday's daughter is tomorrow -the mother. A very thought provoking statement because its only the

instance of marriage that changes her status. However she remains the same in her core as a lovable

affectionate being which doesn't change with the change of roles in her life. She remains equally a

daughter while being a wife and mother too. Her emotions of love only deepen as a mother and they are

always there in the fragrance of innocence that never withers.

Today's daughter is the man's sculptor tomorrow - who she sculpts with her love and infuses over 100

values. She makes the character of man through these values. She chisels him into a balanced and peace

loving individual. Such good values and character make the nation progressive as man is engaged in

pursuit of excellence rather than involve in nefarious activities.

So we must nurture our daughters with a lot of love, care and a high self esteem so that after becoming

mothers, they imbibe all these qualities into not only her children but also all around her.

If daughter is time, mother is continuity of that time.

If daughter is the fun of life, mother is the hardwork to make life.

If time is turbid by destiny, Mother is the patience in hope, daughter is the smile.

If the rays of the sun are the light of new horizon daughter is that horizon while the mother is the sun in

prayer.

If the mother is rose, daughter is the aroma.

If life is a desert, mother is the oasis alongside whom life revolves and the daughter-the cool of water.

Deepika Gupta (Parent of Nikita Gupta)

My Precious Gift I‟ve often really wondered

What good I must have done,

To be given a gift as sweet as you,

My precious little one.

I love to see you smile

Your hugs they make my day.

I pray that God will bless you

In study and in play.

One day when you‟re all grown up,

And you look in the mirror and see,

I hope you know my daughter

What you mean to me.

You are my pride, my prayer

God‟s greatest gift to me.

I hope you see the beautiful girl

That God has given to me.

Women Discrimination

The women discrimination in the developing countries like India, Pakistan, Indonesia is increasing day

by day. A son is born means a „ lottery‟ and „insurance‟ , a grand celebration is organized. A daughter is

born, the reaction is totally different. The discrimination can be seen even in the toys given for the

children to play. A boy is given „Doctor set , Cars, Play station‟ but a girl is given a „ Kitchen set , Doll‟

which indicates that they are driven towards a place where these children have to be in future. The girl

child is looked upon as a burden in our society by the girls‟ parents as they have to dispatch with their

daughters a great amount of money and precious gifts in the form of dowry at the time of their wedding.

This leads the parents to make a horrific decision of ending the life of a girl child in the mother‟s womb.

In this changing era where people are educated the discrimination tends to prevail in the same way but in

a „sophisticated‟ manner. People have to tried to eliminate this to a far extent. We have to educate every

girl child and make them aware of this ill effects.

Tr. Viginta Lobo

Girl Child -The Heavenly Gift

My son wanted to go to fun fair

So I took him and my maid's daughter

The place was beaming with light and

sound

The kids ran around and were having fun

I gave each a hundred rupee note

And told them to go and enjoy

My son ran from one ride to the other

He shot balloons and bought a toy

He threw rings and tried his luck

He ate pop-corns and ice cream

After an hour, he came empty handed

My maid's daughter had a bag with her

She said "My mom gets badly drenched

While going to work in the rain,

She coughs and is feverish in the night

I am just trying to reduce her pain"

I love these rides but you know Aunty,

"I can't see my mother suffer,

And feel like crying when she is sick,

So I bought this umbrella for her"

I stared at the girl with admiration

And my eyes welled-up with tears

Poverty has snatched away her childhood

And she has grown older than her years.

The Health Of Our Women – A Matter Of Concern

Right to health is one of the basic human rights. Women have been historically discriminated against,

they are a group whose health concerns need to be prioritised, understood and researched. Health is an

important component of human development. With the rapid changes brought about through

globalization and the resultant new economic order, there is an increase in the need for academic studies

to be focused on the area of women‟s health. In India women from the poorer classes and marginalised

sections experience differential access to health care facilities. Women‟s health is one of the areas that

deserve special concern since they are doubly vulnerable to discrimination.

Working women have specific health concerns. With the rise in the number of working women in this

age of globalisation, new health problems are surfacing. Stress of work coupled with domestic

responsibilities, pregnancy related problems has taken a toll not only on women‟s physical health, but

their mental health too, with large number of women being afflicted by common mental disorders

including depression. Faced with gender based discrimination at different stages of their lives many find

it difficult to cope with the stress they are subjected to.

Perspectives Of Science And Technology In Education

Science and education are like two sides of the same coin acting as a complement to each other.

Science encourages active learning i.e. learning by doing that involves discovery learning, problem-based

learning, experiential learning and inquiry-based instruction, discussion, debate, student questioning,

think-pair-share, polling, role playing, cooperative learning, group projects, and student presentations.

Science helps in learning through multiple learning modalities. It empowers the development of the

student‟s capacities to reason, plan, solve problems, comprehend language and ideas, learn new concepts,

and think abstractly.

Science induces metacognition i.e. it teaches students to think about their thinking, develop high order

reasoning and facilitates constructivism. According to Piaget, through accommodation and assimilation,

individuals construct new knowledge from their experiences. Constructivism views learning as a process

in which students actively construct or build new ideas and concepts based upon prior knowledge and

new information.

The combination of Computers and the Internet and mobile devices are transforming human

experience, empowering individuals through access to knowledge, strengthening the rapport between

students and teachers.

As science and technology improves and advances, education changes and develops. In this rapidly-

evolving world, science and technology plays an instrumental role in making education and learning more

interesting. As an engine of growth, although the potential of technology is endless, yet the fact that

educational systems are facing with the challenge of revolutions posed by science and technology cannot

be denied, and has to be prudently taken care of.

In a world in which the Internet makes information ubiquitous, what counts is the ability to use

knowledge intelligently. Knowledge is the systematically integrated information that allows and enables

students to think logically, act purposefully and intelligently in this competitive and demanding world for

their bright future.

Science and technology are key drivers to development, because technological and scientific

revolutions underpin economic advances, improvements in health systems, education and the

infrastructure. The technological revolutions of the 21st century are emerging from entirely new sectors,

based on micro-processors, tele-communications, bio-technology and nano -technology.

The most remarkable breakthroughs in every sphere can definitely be hoped and awaited from the

interaction of insights and applications arising when these technologies converge among themselves

alongwith one‟s conscience.

Tr. Sharmila Kudre

Perspectives Of Science& Technology In Education

Science and Technology is the foundation of our culture and society. It is the engine of scientific

progress and thus of the progress of the society. Science combining technology has contributed to a

greater extent by harnessing the new and innovative methods in the field of education. In this 21st

century, where we are becoming techno-savvy, educative system also forms a part of this change. Gone

are the days where teaching learning process used to take place by using the old methods and everything

was done manually, but now with the advancement of science and technology there is a rapid change in

the way education is imparted globally.

Science and technology has opened new doors in education and its use has benefited the common man to

a great extent. Education has become practical, child oriented and easily approachable to all. The

different areas where science and technology can be used are organizing seminars, workshops, guidance

courses for students, career guidance courses etc.

Science And Technology

Scientific and technological knowledge, 'invade'

all realms of life in modern society. Our societies

are dominated and even 'driven' by ideas and

products from it. Our public and private sphere,

our leisure time and our workplace are

increasingly dependent on new as well as upon

more established technologies. Their knowledge

and skills are crucial for most of our actions and

decisions. They are major cultural products of

human history and are an inherent part of our

social milieu. In a rapidly-evolving world, it is an

important instrument in the search for sustainable

development and poverty reduction. Modern

societies need people with scientific and

technological qualifications as social forces that

shape the future. Its use is based on our value

system, as embodied in our religious and political

ideologies and in our institutional structure. The

requirement for educator proficiency in technology

and new emphasis on developing 21st century

skills for students, has spurred the adoption of

interactive whiteboards in our school. Increased

learning with the use of this technology makes the

one-computer classroom a workable instructional

model. It‟s a proven fact that teachers are crucial

change agents in educational reform and that

teachers‟ beliefs are precursors to change.

UNESCO also encourages the design of effective

science and technology education programmes. It

promotes a multidisciplinary approach to science

and technology education and gives particular

attention to the provision of basic knowledge, life

skills and scientific literacy for all, as well as

preparation for the world of work. It is very likely

that the influence of science and technology on our

lives will continue to increase in the years to come.

Gift Of Science

Mangalyan (MOM) has entered the Mars orbit on

22nd Sept 14, a fully conceived Indian space

program done by proud Indian sciencetist;

it‟s a gift of science.

Modern science and technology have changed our

lives in many dramatic ways. Airplanes,

automobiles, communications satellites,

computers, plastics, and television are only a few

of the scientific and technological inventions that

have transformed human life. Research by nuclear

physicists has led to the development of nuclear

energy as a source of power. Agricultural scientists

have developed better varieties of plants and highly

effective fertilizers. The development of antibiotics

and other new drugs has helped to control many

infectious diseases.

Science has given us technology which has now

become an integral part of our lives. In today‟s

world, computer technology has made our lives

much easier and convenient. It has helped many

businesses to better serve the community. It is

almost impossible to think that one can survive

without computers. They have become a gadget of

almost daily use for people of every age. Mobile

phone and the TV has brought the world closed

and smaller, enabling us to be in touch with the

loved ones in real time and also seeing and

learning what is happening far way. In our

mythology (Mahabharata) we have read that

SANJAY would relay to DHITRASTRA who was

blind the happening in the battle field, could our

fore fathers would ever imagine that such things

would be possible in days to come, it‟s a gift of

science and technology.

Science has helped us to develop tremendously in

the medical field, Body part transplant, treating

diseases which were untreatable in past , child

mortality has improved tremendously just to name

a few. While science has given us life and hope

and helped the world to come closer, we have also

seen the dark side of it, destruction it caused in

Hiroshima and Nagasaki, weapon of mass

destruction and all the technology had invented to

end life. Industrial pollution is a silent killer which

also is a gift of technology.

DISASTERS -WAITING TO HAPPEN – Better Be Careful Now

The environment doesn‟t take anything for granted. Environmentalists have blamed encroachment of the

wetlands in the valley as the main reason for the devastation. The Kashmir valley is dotted with wetlands

which play a very important role in controlling flood in the region. Apart from natural ponds and lakes,

the valley also houses other types of wetlands, like rivers, streams, riverine wetlands, man-made ponds

and tanks. Dal lake, one of the world's largest natural lakes, covered an area of 75 sq km in 1200 AD.

The lake area almost reduced to one-third in the eighties and has further reduced to one-sixth of its

original size in the recent past. The lake has also lost almost 12 m of depth. Massive encroachments and

erection of many structures and hotels have led to the reduction in the size of the lake.

The water bodies in Jammu are also under threat. The city was once famous for its traditional ponds and

tanks which have been erased to house commercial complexes and parks in the city. This practice is

repeated across India. Every year floods are reported from Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Bengaluru, Kolkata,

Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Surat, Rohtak, Gorakhpur, Guwahati due factors like inadequate drainage

systems, housing on flood plains, natural drains and river beds, and loss of natural water storage areas.

These factors demonstrate how rapid urbanisation in and around the city limits make flood events

inevitable in the urban areas.

Kedarnath being a good example to the people of the country to STOP encroachments on the hills. With

"monsoon gamble" and "unplanned corrupt development" the nature was destined to get angry. Time has

come to think seriously that what attention we are really paying towards our development needs and

nature's balance. This can happen again if we just shut our eyes on the name of development. Nature

needs a hand of friendship but we have two to crush it. The outcome is what we give to nature it gives us

same thing. The natural calamities are all manmade. The Uttarakhand disaster happened due to natural

cause, which somehow got aggravated due to human interference.

SO WAKE UP AND SAVE THE MOTHER EARTH . WE ONLY HAVE THIS PLANET TO LIVE.

EARLY CHILD EDUCATION

Dominic Savio Kindergarten makes education at the early stage of child

interesting by using illustrative aids, co-curricular activities, storytelling and

interactive boards in the classroom. We believe that: What a child thinks

about, he can talk about. What a child talks about, he can write about. What

a child writes, he can read. For this approach to succeed, the teacher

provides a classroom environment which stimulates thinking. Early

childhood education focuses on children's learning through play, based on

the research and philosophy of Jean Piaget. This belief is centered on the

"power of play". Play meets the physical, intellectual, language, emotional

and social needs (PILES) of child.

It has been thought that children learn more efficiently and gain more

knowledge through play-based activities such as dramatic play, art and

social games.

The Early Childhood classroom in Dominic Savio encourages:

Fine Motor Development: used to increase small muscle development. This may include

manipulating puzzles, drawing, coloring, painting, beading and manipulating print materials. All these

activities are included in the daily time table in the curriculum at Dominic Savio Kindergarten.

Cognitive Development: used in our interactive learning environment. This includes the engagement

with peers, adults, materials and activities. Field trips, picnics, outdoor teaching periods in the garden

area, celebrating several color days, festivals in the school premises enhances child‟s cognitive skills in

our school.

Physical Development: used in our interactive environment. This includes running, jumping,

climbing, catching and ball playing, and structured outdoor time.

Social Development: used to promote active learning experiences. This will be done by the use of

many dramatic play experiences such as pretend play, show and tell and role playing.

Family Involvement: used to increase the educational ability of individual children. Parents are welcome

to our open door policy and encouraged to participate in many child centered activities. They are also

encouraged to participate in program planning such as field trips and picnics.

The Curriculum at Dominic Savio Kindergarten provides

opportunities for development of the child in other areas

besides intellectual and cognitive growth. It provides

opportunities for healthy social, emotional and physical

development. Children can freely express themselves

through various media, creative materials, manipulative toys,

books, dramatics and role play materials. Several events and

activities such as Creative day, Literary day, Desh bhakti

day, Children‟s day, Teacher‟s day, Sports day, Christmas

Celebration and Annual day provide equal opportunities to

all the pupils and enhance a holistic development.

“A world without flowers is like a face without a smile.”

My green and sweet earth…. The grass is green and thesky is blue

The earth is full of goodness for you.

Its existence is at stake,

So to protect her life let us are awake.

The nature is full of life….

With gurgling streams and lashing waves

With butterflies flipping around

And birds fluttering their wings

We must save the world around

Let the brave men take care of the perfect round.

My days are worthy living in this green earth

In the fertile soil growing trees till my last breath.

Let‟s take a pledge to protect the mother earth,

And that‟s the perfect way for you and for me.

Serena Gomez, VI B

Save the environment Save this, save that, save all‟

this seems to be future's call.

Today we just want to fulfill our selfish needs,

but man! Earth cannot fulfill all your greed.

Over population and increasing pollution

to these problems, there seems no solution,

natural resources-the gifts of nature,

seems to have a poor fate.

For saving the nature, we need to act smart,

otherwise the dark era is about to start.

So let‟s unite so that our natural resources can be

The dependence of living and non living things…

E nvironment means the surroundings. Land, water, air,

plants, animals, solid wastes and other things that are surround-

ing us constitute our environment. Man and environment are

closely intertwined with each other, to maintain a balance or

equilibrium in nature.

Different groups of people working in different areas express it

in various ways. When physical scientists talk about environ-

ment they generally refer to the physical environment that com-

prises the three inter locking systems the Atmosphere, the Hy-

drosphere and the Lithosphere.

Biologists often refer to biological environment consisting of all

living organisms of the Biosphere. Similarly social scientists refer to the social, cultural, economic and

organizational environment.

Hence environment may be defined as "the sum of all social, cultural, economical, biological, physical

and chemical factors surrounding the 'man' to give necessary protection to him."

Two types of environment we may come across. One is the natural environment of the air, water, solid

wastes, noise, radiation, soil, timber, wildlife and living space etc. The second one is the man-made en-

vironment that deals with work environment, housing, technology, aesthetics, transportation, utilities,

settlement, urbanization and so on.

These environmental components are considered as the resources and are mostly exploited and utilized

by the men to fulfill their basic physical needs they can be considered as the fellow members of the

global eco-system with which men establish emotional, intellectual, or physical relationships and these

provide the basis for a sense of purpose of life to them.

Thus, man is firmly placed as an important part of the global ecosystem, which depends on him much as

he depends on it. Hence, there is a close relationship between man and environment.

Boscoites bag the „Green Awards‟ with a flying start

The green comrades of Don Bosco Senior Secondary School,

Nerul leaves no stones unturned when it comes to the caring of

nature. We started the tetra pack drive in the year 2013-14 and the

response was overwhelming. The students have contributed leaps

and bounds, which has finally gained a lot of accolades.

On July 5th Mr. Ramashish Joshi, an active member of Sahyadri

Nisarg Mitra felicitated our school for crossing the 4500 carton

mark on behalf of RUR and gifted us Green bin and Green desk

for our efforts. We can boast that our school is the first in Navi

Mumbai to cross this mark.

For the Green Carnival 2013-14 conducted by RUR in Don Bosco

School, Matunga, Mr.Jayesh Manek, the Director of South Asia

Markets was the chief guest. Tr. Annie Gomez of our school was

felicitated with a certificate for „the leadership role‟.

Mr. Ramashish Joshi of Sahyadri Nisarg Mitra and the CEO of

Earthaholics Ms. Smitha Shirodkar has also appreciated the re-

markable work of our school.

Thus Don BoscoSchool, Nerul stands out from the rest and has

created a wave of change in the field of recycling of tetra pack and

e-waste. We owe all these achievements to God‟s grace. Let him

bless us to continue the good work to build up a sustainable and a

better environment. “The earth laughs in flowers.”

Eco-club Orientation Programme 2014

Don Bosco School, Nerul organized the first orientation programme for the students of the Eco-club on

2nd August 2014. The seminar was conducted in the activity room on the second floor. The speakers for

the day were Fr. Savio and Ms. Shruti from Green line Organization. The objective of the program was

to introduce the green school campaign for this year.

Fr. Savio introduced the students to the theme of the Green Schools Campaign for this year, „The Tree

Rangers‟. A presentation on „The seven islands of Mumbai‟ was shown to the students, drawing their

attention to the bio-diversity of the original city which has now been affected by population, pollution

and reclamation of land. Statistics showing, „One tree giving oxygen for every nine people‟ caught the

attention of the children to do something worth while to protect the trees.

“To plant trees is to give body and life to one's dreams of a better world."

REPORT ON TREE PLANTATION

The inauguration of Tree Plantation drive was held on 15th August, 2014 in the School premises by Mr.

Luis A. D‟Cruz. He is the Ex. President of Rotary Club of Navi Mumbai and is also an eminent scientist.

Fr.Bonnie Borges and the Supervisors were a part of this drive that helped in planting the saplings.

It is another feather in the cap, for the Eco-Club faculty members in the Don Bosco Senior Secondary

School, Nerul. This drive sent a powerful message of saving the environment on the great day of

Independence.

The Beautiful Nature The Sun rises up in the sky,

The bird soars really high,

The star twinkles in the night sky,

the moon shines bright and high.

The rubbish sways in the cool breeze,

so take your litter home please;

we keep our streets neat and clean,

so there is no pollution to be seen.

The meadows of lush green spiky grass,

Is brushed by the soothing breeze

The trees sway upon the mountain

is a pleasant sight for eyes.

Ms. Shruti taught the students to identify the trees based on their barks, shapes and leaves, aided by a

game. A video clip on „Tale of city‟s oldest trees‟ was also shown to them.

Fr. Savio explained four activities for this year‟s „Green Schools Campaign‟, to get the students actually

involved in „greening‟ projects.

Activity I – Tree mapping

Activity II – Tree rangers in action

Activity III – Organize an exhibition on trees

Activity IV – Your own initiative on trees educating children on their responsibility towards the

environment.

The incentive for completion of all the activities was „a green champ award‟ for any one student from

each participating school.

The program ended with a vote of thanks.

A GIRL CHILD IS GOD'S GIFT

I ndia is growing dynamically in every field. Today, the boom in economy,

innovative technologies and improved infrastructure has become nation‟s pride.

The country has witnessed advancements in all fields but bias against a girl child

is still prevailing in the country. Such is the tragic irony of fate, that a beautiful

creation such as the girl child is today one of the gravest concerns facing

humanity, with a volley of summits, conferences and events held for the

cause, with topmost world leaders at the helm.

The onslaught of feminism has not allowed Indian women to revolt against the

century old systems. For centuries together women have played their roles of

being the provider and sustainers of families without even a thank you note at the end of their lives. It has

been proven in India and other countries where ever women have been given freedom they have changed

the world and made a better place to live in.

Education and training helps the woman to hone her talents. She can earn more money. Women have the

ability to put the money earned in further education. They also spend the money of better healthcare for

children and families. The economic status of the woman gives her a better social understanding. An

educated woman is likely to defend herself better than an illiterate one against men, crimes and abuse.

Once she knows her rights she can also approach the courts. Many daring women have taken such

recourse to bring men to task. Educate a man, you educate one person, educate a woman, you educate a

complete family.

It is only a woman who understands that whether a male or female child, it should be healthy and given

equal status. A woman has the power to end the evil of dowry system. As girls are given a chance to live

there will be control in population. Families will be small, healthy better educated and happy. Today‟s

woman has to be given the confidence to live. She will eventually be a balanced mother. The craving for

the ubiquitous male heir has to vanish. Discrimination between the male and female child have to end

forever. A daughter is a girl who eventually grows up to be her mom's best friend.

India, in all its glory of being an IT superpower and one of the fastest developing countries, tragically

represents the lowest child sex ratio in the world.

The Ministry for Welfare of Woman and Child in India says, „don‟t kill your girl child. We will look after

her.‟ It is an embarrassment for all of us if we fail to protect the rights of the girl child. India has examples

of women who have risen from the ashes like phoenix and done the country proud. India can be poised

and shining only if the girls are given an opportunity to prove their talents. In education they have been

toppers consistently against boys. A girl is like a flower to be nurtured. She is a goddess to be

revered. She is mother earth that sustains the very breath of humanity.

The nation of mothers still follows a culture where people idolizes son and mourns daughters. UN figures

out that about 750,000 girls are aborted every year in India. If the practice continues, then no longer a day

will come when Mother India will have no mothers, potentially, no life.

We all are proud citizens of India. The need of the hour is to realize our responsibilities and give a halt to

this crime. What can we do to curb the brutal and undesirable practice of mass killing girls? A determined

drive can initiate a spark to light the lamp and show the world that we all are part of the great Mother

India. Unless India gives women a chance to survive, it would fail as the world‟s largest democracy.

The ugly practice of female foeticide began with the ultrasound machine becoming a popular diagnostic

tool in the late eighties. "Every invention of science is a boon and curse at the same time. The major

hurdle is lack of political will and the courage to fight against this social evil," a gynaecologist said.

Counselling the couples and sensitizing them is the best way to save the girl child.

A daughter is the most beautiful gift of God to parents.
