In fact, there was a time when there was no earth, no sky, no plants of any kind, no oceans or seas, rivers or lakes. It was in eternity that God chose to create a splendid place for people to live. The Bible tells us how God did it.

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” God spoke, and it was done. Wow! Can you imagine that?

Darkness was everywhere, not a glimmer of light. Then God said, “Let there be light.” Suddenly, the darkness became light. God had just created night and day. It was the first day of time.

Then God made the sky. He collected the water covering the earth into one place to make dry land in other areas.

God commanded the earth to grow plants of all kinds. He made each plant in a way so that more plants would grow from seeds. Now we have all the plants in our world because God made them in the beginning.

Then God made our solar system. Awesome! The sun is exactly the right distance from earth. He gave earth a moon to cause changes in the tides. Then He added millions of stars in that great canopy of sky around earth.

God created the earth and everything in it during that first week of time.

Begin with a Capital! The First Week in Time

Genesis 1:1-18

Brilliant sunsets painting the evening sky. Colorful fall leaves drifting lazily to the ground. Waves playing chase as they tumble across the ocean. Planet Earth is a beautiful world of nature. But it was not always so, not at all.

It is fun to learn about the wonderful earth God created. As we learn more, we recognize the wisdom He used. God knew exactly where to hang the stars in space. He knew how hot to make the sun to benefit people who live on earth. The earth is the only planet in the solar system that is suitable for people. A very wise designer made the earth exactly the size it needed to be. He placed it into orbit at the right distance from the sun, so that people can live on it.

The earth’s axis, which points toward the North Star, tilts to the right at the angle of twenty-three degrees to the side. Because of this tilt, the sun appears to go north in the summer and south in the winter. That gives us the four seasons.

Write the name of each season on the lines.

6 Lesson 1

AMAZING FACTSABOUT THE EARTH GOD CREATED

The earth moves at one thousand one hundred miles a minute as it moves around the sun in

its yearly orbit or path. It takes about three hundred sixty-five days—one year—for the earth to complete the path God put it in. The earth turns in a spinning movement—like a top—to make a complete rotation in twenty-

four hours. Because God made a dependable universe, space explorations can take place with

amazing accuracy.
