Gumby is the unlikely name given to a man in Central Asia, known tomany in our fellowship who have travelled and ministered in that area of theworld. His story is amazing, and one that we should all keep in mind as weapproach the Christmas season.

Gumby was brought up as a devout Muslim in a nation closed to ourfaith. As a young man, he was even chosen as a muezzin, the men who callout the hours of prayer each day from the mosques. Soon after he married,

Gumbys zeal for his religion led him to Cypress, where he and his wife threwthemselves into the work of reclaiming Muslims who had converted to ourfaith. But then Jesus showed up in his life. A local pastor gave Gumby and hiswife a Bible, and challenged them to read it alongside the Koran. As they did,the Holy Spirit stirred in their hearts and they gave their lives to the Lord. Justas in the apostle Pauls life many centuries before, the man who had been arelentless enemy of the faith turned completely around and became instead apassionate follower of Jesus.

Gumby moved to yet a third Muslim nation and connected with someof our churchs partners. They spent time in discipling him and providingtraining for the next stage of his lifes journey. A short time later, he and hisfamily returned to his native country to begin the arduous work the Lordhad prepared him forplanting house churches among a people adamantly

opposed to our faith. His miraculous journey returned full circle: from the landof his birth to Cypress to a third nation for discipling then back to his nativecountry for ministry.

For seven years, Gumby carried on his work. Then the authorities caughtup with him, imprisoning both him and his wife. Like so many other believersthroughout the Muslim world, the two of them were persecuted and putin jail. It didnt surprise anyone who knew them that they spent their timeof incarceration witnessing to fellow prisoners, prison guards, lawyers and

judges. Our partners in the area worked ceaselesslyand many around theworld prayedtoward their release. And the Lord answered their prayers.Gumby and his wife were released as refugees back to the nation where theyhad received their training.

Pam and I had the chance last spring to connect with Gumby and his wifein their apartment and enjoy lunch (his wife is an amazing cook) and a timeof fellowship. What a wonderful and God-filled couple! We came away with adeep appreciation for this brothers zeal for the Kingdom and his willingness tofollow Gods will wherever it takes him.

Andhere is where Gumbys story really gets interestingthe next stageof Gumbys journey will be to Lexington, SC, where our church will host themfor a period of time as he prepares for yet another place of service.

Its vitally important that we as a church family keep in mind theuntold numbers of people across the world who dont know Jesusthe lostmultitudes being reached with the gospel as God raises up apostolic leaderslike Gumby. And its also essential that we keep in prayer the multitudes ofChristians in, especially, the Middle East and Central Asia who are suffering for

    their faith.

We live in urgent times, where there are somany opportunities to take the message of Jesus toLexington and around the world. How excited I amabout your passion as a congregation, to be obedientand faithful to Jesus in holding onto a world-wide visionof the gospel!

Here in Lexington, South Carolina, kids get excited aboutChristmas. They get to learn the true meaning of Christmas throughthe story of Jesus birth. They sing Christmas songs at church and athome. They get to see beautiful Christmas lights and decorations allover town. They cant wait to see what Santa Claus has left for themunderneath their Christmas tree on Christmas Day. We are so blessedto be able to provide our children with those experiences.

Not all parents have the ability to provide these things for theirchildren, and even more importantly, there are millions of childrenaround the world that have never heard the name Jesus.

Through Operation Christmas Child, a ministry of SamaritansPurse, you can help reach children around the world with the gospelin a tangible way. By packing a shoe box with small toys, toiletriesand candy, you can give the gift of hope to a child in need.

Lexington Baptist is a designated drop-off location for shoe boxgifts, and we will receive thousands of them to prepare for their

journey around the world. We will collect shoe boxes from ourcongregation in all four services on Sunday, November 17.If your family would like to pack a shoe box, just follow thedirections on the next page and bring your boxes to churchwith you on Sunday, November 17.

If you have any questions about Operation Christmas Child, please contact the Missions Office at 803.996.8836.

Followers of Jesus Christ arecompelled by the love they havefor the Son to do good works. Wesee this in Scripture. James evenstates that these good works arecompleting evidence of the faithbelievers have. Its a joy to see thislived out in our student ministry. Thisis clearly portrayed through, but notlimited to, our CORE group. COREstudents are middle and high schoolstudents in leadership roles inside thestudent ministry. Youve seen thesestudents wearing their CORE shirtsand serving in a variety of ways, suchas in childrens ministry on Sundaymornings, Tailgate Sunday, Light Upthe Night, Christmas at the Barn,LICS, serving homebound members, nursing homes and FCA.

I also believe that this servicecontributes to the closeness of ourgroup. In my life, when I do ministrywith someone, theres a special bondand connection with that person.

Many of you have also experiencedthis bond.

Student Ministry Families,We have enjoyed such a great fall season up to this point. On Wednesday

nights, we started Encounter431 for all of our students. We felt God wasmoving us to try something different and He has been faithful.

Over the past eight weeks, we have been doing a series called Gods BigStory. Through this series, we have seen students get excited about sharing

their stories. Each week, students have gotten up and shared what God is doingin their lives. This time has been challenging and rewardingas we watch God do a work here in Lexington. As a pastor, Iam inspired and thankful when I see the moving of the HolySpirit. I can only pray that God will continue to do a mightywork in the lives of these students.

Ive heard that in ancient times, a tiny clay lamp was attached to the thongof a sandal. The light that was cast from the tiny lamp was sufficient to guide asingle step. The psalmist wrote in Psalm 119:105, Thy word is a lamp to guidemy feet and a light on my path. I find it so comforting to know that God willguide my every step.

Unfortunately, I dont always allow Gods word to be my lamp. The pastnine months were filled with me racing to the front porch in the afternoonsto see which new book had arrived. I am a typical first-born and wanted tobe prepared for this adventure known as motherhood. Amazon became mytool for ordering countless books about baby sleep cycles, nursing, discipline, parenting philosophies and baby development. I read these books with delight, knowing that I was tucking away chunks of information that would prepare mefor the arrival our first baby.

It did not take long after our sweet Noras arrival for me to realize thatNora hadnt read the books I had read.

I had a quickflashback to the first few months of marriage. Before I gotmarried, I read a stack of books about marriage. During those first few months

of marriage, I learned that there is one book that should be the foundation ourmarriage the Bible. Motherhood isnt any different God gives us His word toguide our steps for every decision.

He has blessed me immensely with the two best resources that I could everhave as a mom: scripture and fellowship with other moms through MOPS. Godwill provide enough light to take one step at a time by giving me all theresources I need in each stage of motherhood!

Who are we as a church body here in Lexington, South Carolina? What dowe stand for and why are we here? What is our mission and who called us todo it? How can we best worship our God with all that He has blessed us?

These are some of the questions we need to always be asking ourselvesand asking God to provide the answers. We have made worship a priority for

our church, and in rightfully doing so, we have to find answers to the biggestquestion of all, How are we supposed to worship?

Just as the Disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray, we also needto ask the Lord to teach us how to worship. Exact answers to this question arenot easy, but God is mostly concerned that our hearts be pointed in the rightdirection.

God has blessed us with threebeautiful children and has given us a

special yearning regarding children.Last year, in response to this, webecame licensed foster parents. Ourfirst placement was a teenager whohad lost her family and in manyways had also lost her way. There issomething very intimate and specialabout opening your home to anotherperson, particularly a child. However,it was also one of the most difficult, scary and challenging things we haveever done.

My husband, Chan, and I had to

recognize and release control to Godevery day. We had to cleave togetheras a couple, and as parents. We hadto be vigilant and prayerful. We hadto be purposeful and organized inour parenting. We reached out toour church and our support network.Ultimately, we were blessed to sharenine months of our lives and our lovewith a child who needed it.

We cant really know what impactwe might have had, but we know tha

she left us changed as a family. Weare a closer, more purposeful familynow and we look forward to thenext opportunity that God mayhave in placing a child with us for atime. Imagine what would happen ifeven 10% of our church opened theirhome to a child or person in need, and oh what a need there is! Thisexperience has reminded me, yetagain, that lifes greatest blessingsonly come alongside lifes greatestchallenges. ~ Beth Shealy

In 2004, I experienced a painful pregnancy loss that left me with a intenselonging to add to our family but an intense fear of becoming pregnant again. Iremembered a friend who had adopted a toddler from China, and since then, Ihad been interested in adoption. I decided to attend an informational meetingat an adoption agency and prayed for guidance, but the timing wasnt Gods.Instead God blessed us with two more sons in the following two years.

Although we were blessed beyond our dreams, I could not forget the ideaof adopting a daughter into our family. I have to admit I was quite surprisedwhen our youngest, John, who was just a year old, said, YES, lets do it! Thusbegan the process to bring our daughter, Lily, home from China.

The story is long, too long to share with you here, but I can tell you thatadopting Lily has completely changed my life. Not only have we been blessedwith a very loving, kind and fun daughter, but the experience completelyopened my eyes to the plight of orphans around the world. I became involvedin the adoption community and want to be a voice for the orphan.

Did you know there are 148 million orphans in the world? Did you knowthat God calls all Christians to care for orphans? Whether we adopt, financially support or pray for them diligently, we are called to do so. Not a daygoes by that I dont look into the eyes of an orphan on my email or Facebookfeed and every time my heart breaks. My greatest desire is that everyone wouldfeel the call to help orphans in some way.

Nearly two years after we brought our first daughter home from China, wetraveled to China again and brought our second daughter home. Each day, Ilook into their eyes and thank God for placing adoption on my heart.

I would love to talk with anyone who is interested in learning more aboutadoption, sponsoring orphans or the Orphan Ministry here at LBC. I can bereached by email at [email protected] or 803.445.4501.

    Look After Orphans

Orphans are easier to ignore before you know their names. They are easier to ignore before you see their faces.

It is easier to pretend they arent real before you hold themin your arms. But once you do, everything changes

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this:to look after orphans and widows in their distress

and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

My adoption storybegins at my birth. I wasadopted when I was threedays old by my parents. Ilove to hear them recountthe story of my arrival.

My mom says when thesocial worker placed mein her arms, it was like Iwas born to her in thatvery moment. My daddescribes a scene whereI was screaming myhead off when the socialworker brought me to him.She placed me in my dads arms, and Iimmediately calmed down, looked up athim with wide eyes and melted his heart.I thought that this happy story is where

my adoption story would end. But God hadsomething else planned for me.

My husband Aaron and I have beenmarried for 18 years. We have twohandsome sons, Alex (13) and Andrew (11)whom we love very much. We thought ourfamily was complete and we settled into ahappy life together raising two boys. ButGod had something more planned for us.

About a year after we moved to Lexington in 2009, we met our neighbors,John and Jennifer OCain. We became acquainted with them shortly after theybrought home their first adopted daughter from China, Lily. We soon became

close friends and were inspired by their adoption journey. Looking back on thistime, we now know this was the time period where God was preparing ourhearts for adoption. Aaron and I began to talk about the possibility of adoptinga daughter. At first, we had just casual conversations and then began to talkmore seriously. Eventually, we found ourselves talking about this little girl onthe other side of the world all the time and realized that God was calling us toget started. In January of 2012, we completed an application to adopt a littlegirl from China.

After 20 months of home studies, fingerprints, paperwork, piles of copies, notaries, physicals and visas, we are waiting for one final travel approval fromChina to go get our little girl, Meili. Meili Brace was born Dang Mei Li in China inOctober of 2009 and abandoned when she was two months old. Since then, shehas lived in an orphanage in an industrial province of China (Shanxi). We haveonly seen four pictures of her and reviewed a medical file but we know shebelongs in our family.

We are so grateful to family and friends for their prayers andencouragement throughout this journey and to God for giving us the gift of adaughter and sister to love!

~ Aaron, Lynne, Alex, Andrew, and (coming soon) Meili Brace

We met Alexa because Stevessister saw a child that neededstability and love and decided to stepin and help. When I first heard shewas getting involved, I said, This isnot a good idea. You really need to

mind your own business. Thankfully, she didnt listen. After meeting Alexaa few times, we fell in love with thisspunky, full of energy, precious girl.

Then one Sunday, we werevisiting a new church, and the specialmessage was about the sanctity oflife and especially, about adoptingolder children. When we got in thecar, we both said, God just told uswe should adopt Alexa. We calledSteves sister and asked her totalk with Alexas biological father. It just so happened that earlier inthe weekend he agreed that Alexaneeded a permanent home and it wastime to find an adoptive family. Wemet him the next day, and a weeklater Alexa was moving in with us.

We had a year-long battle (in thecourts) and at times, we thought wewould lose her. We did actually loseher for five days, but I knew God hadbrought us to her and He had placedit on our hearts to be her parents.

I knew He would get us throughthough I couldnt actually see how.One Sunday, our pastor stood up andsaid, We are going to hold handsand pray for Alexa. We are going topray that God storm the gates andclaim Alexa. This is a battle againstthe devils schemes.

That moment was a turningpoint for me. From that moment on,I knew we were fighting for her life. When God created Alexa she was noaccident. God knew the moment Hemade her the plan for her life andwho her real parents were to be. He

just needed a vehicle to get her tous. I am so thankful that we didntignore Gods tugging at our heart.I am so thankful that He providedus the stamina and courage to keepfighting for her. Alexa is our miraclechild. She has been such a blessing toour family and our family would notbe complete without her.

A day when women came together, drew near to Godwith sincere hearts, and were offered a full assurance offaith. They did not give up meeting together, but rather

encouraged one another as members of one bodywith one single purpose of giving glory to God

in all circumstances of life (Hebrews 10:22-24).

One hundred and fifty women from LBC and oursurrounding communities enjoyed a morning filledwith fellowship, worship, encouragement and breakout sessions designed tomeet specific needs of individual women.

The day began with a breakfast fit for a queen, and continued as womenlaughed and worked together in crafting Scripture Jars to take home and helpcommit scriptures to memory. Jane and Luke Willis then led us into the throneroom of God with songs of worship. Through the story of Peter in Matthew 14and the lyrics of Oceans by Hillsong, Jane encouraged us to find Christ in thegreat unknown of life where feet may fail to be confident that with Him ourstrength can stand. During this time, hearts came together as women were inawe of our Savior, giving Him honor and praise.

The focus of the morning then turned to the fifteen breakout sessionsdesigned to meet every day needs of real women. Each session lasted fiftyminutes and was led by women experienced in advising women on each topic. The hardest part was choosing only two from the fifteen sessions offered.

As a working professional, I did not want to get up early on a Saturdaymorning. But I am so glad that I did! In the Godly Grandmothersession,Ruby taught us above all that in order to love our grandchildren, we mustfirst love their Mom and Dad unconditionally. As I looked around the room, you could see in the eyes of each woman that she had connected with us all

in that simple, but true statement. ~ Maggie Glass

Spending time with other ladies, all in different stages of life, was so refreshing. To see that we all go through similar battles and

struggles was truly encouraging and uplifting. Through the breakoutsession Finding Your Place: What If You Were Made For More Thanto Fit In, led by Karen Koon, the Lord spoke to me about tearingdown my walls and letting love in. Im happy to say I did and Ihave learned so much. God blessed me through this event and Imgrateful for our church and each person that listened to Gods call toplan, attend and teach. ~ Kim Smith

What a blessing to my soul! This is a group of women who are warm, inviting, real and most importantly, share the truth and hope of Jesus Christ.I am not a member at LBC and these women invite you in and the love ofJesus is truly all around. ~ Becky Edwards

The morning was so beautiful fromthe breakfast, to the craft and giftedsinging. God was so alive in ourchurch before the sessions evenbegan. The presence of the HolySpirit was so evident in the womenand their presentations. What ablessing! ~ Eleanor Durban

This was a wonderful, eye-opening event for me. Through the Finding Joyin Trying Timessession, these three women had us riveted through telling oftheir tragic times, and how they were able to rebound to joy and peace throughJesus Christ, and all their Christian friends and family. I only hope my faith andlove of God will carry me through my next trying time as well as theirs did. They were an inspiration. ~ Vicki Monical
