Fear is the wrong attitude! On eight occasions during his pontificate, Pope Benedict XVI delivered reflections on the Thirty-Third Sunday of Ordinary Time. Here what he said on Nov. 16, 2008: Source: Actus Essendi

Dear Brothers and Sisters, The Word of God this Sunday the second to the last Sunday of the liturgical year invites us to be vigilant and hardworking, in the expectation of the Lord’s return at the end of time. The Gospel passage recounts the famous Parable of the Talents, related by St Matthew (25: 14-30). The “talent” was an ancient Roman coin, of great value, and precisely because of this parable’s popularity it became synonymous with personal gifts, which everyone is called to develop. In fact, the text speaks of “a man going on a journey [who] called his servants and entrusted to them his property” (Mt 25: 14). The man in the parable represents Christ himself, the servants are the disciples and the talents are the gifts that Jesus entrusts to them. These gifts, in addition to their natural qualities, thus represent the riches that the Lord Jesus has bequeathed to us as a legacy, so that we may make them productive: his Word, deposited in the Holy Gospel; Baptism, which renews us in the Holy Spirit; prayer the “Our Father” that we raise to God as his children, united in the Son; his forgiveness, which he commanded be offered to all; the Sacrament of his Body sacrificed and his Blood poured out; in a word: the Kingdom of God, which is God himself, present and alive in our midst. This is the treasure that Jesus entrusted to his friends at the end of his brief life on earth. Today’s parable stresses the inner disposition necessary to accept and develop this gift. Fear is the wrong attitude: the servant who is afraid of his master and fears his return hides the coin in the earth and it does not produce any fruit. This happens, for example, to those who after receiving Baptism, Communion and Confirmation subsequently bury these gifts beneath a blanket of prejudice, beneath a false image of God that paralyzes faith and good works, thus betraying the Lord’s expectations. However, the parable places a greater emphasis on the good fruits brought by the disciples who, happy with the gift they received, did not keep it hidden with fear and jealousy but made it profitable by sharing it and partaking in it. Yes, what Christ has given us is multiplied in its giving! It is a treasure made to be spent, invested and shared with all, as we are taught by the Apostle Paul, that great administrator of Jesus’ talents. The Gospel teaching that the liturgy offers us today has also had a strong effect at the historical and social level, encouraging an active and entrepreneurial spirit in the Christian people. The central message, however, concerns the spirit of responsibility with which to receive God’s Kingdom: a responsibility to God and to humanity. This attitude of the heart is embodied perfectly in the Virgin Mary who, on receiving the most precious gift of all, Jesus himself, offered him to the world with immense love. Let us ask her to help us to be “good and faithful servants” so that we may one day enter “into the joy of our Lord”.

Fuente: Actus Essendi Queridos hermanos y hermanas: La Palabra de Dios este domingo, penúltimo domingo del año litúrgico, nos invita a estar vigilantes y esforzados, a la espera del regreso del Señor al final de los tiempos. El pasaje del Evangelio narra la famosa Parábola de los Talentos, relatada por San Mateo (25: 14-30). El "talento" era

una antigua moneda romana, de gran valor, y precisamente por la popularidad de esta parábola se convirtió en sinónimo de dones personales, que todos están llamados a desarrollar. De hecho, el texto habla de “un hombre que para irse de viaje llamó a sus siervos y les confió sus bienes” (Mt 25, 14). El hombre de la parábola representa a Cristo mismo, los siervos son los discípulos y los talentos son los dones que Jesús les confía. Estos dones, además de sus cualidades naturales, representan las riquezas que el Señor Jesús nos ha dejado como legado, para que los hagamos productivos: su Palabra, depositada en el Santo Evangelio; El bautismo, que nos renueva en el Espíritu Santo; rezar el “Padre Nuestro” que elevamos a Dios como hijos suyos, unidos en el Hijo; su perdón, que ordenó que se ofreciera a todos; el Sacramento de su Cuerpo sacrificado y su Sangre derramada; en una palabra: el Reino de Dios, que es Dios mismo, presente y vivo entre nosotros. Este es el tesoro que Jesús confió a sus amigos al final de su breve vida en la tierra. La parábola de hoy enfatiza la disposición interior necesaria para aceptar y desarrollar este don. El miedo es la actitud equivocada: el sirviente que teme a su amo y teme su regreso esconde la moneda en la tierra y no da fruto. Esto les ocurre, por ejemplo, a quienes después de recibir el Bautismo, la Comunión y la Confirmación entierran posteriormente estos dones bajo un manto de prejuicios, bajo una falsa imagen de Dios que paraliza la fe y las buenas obras, traicionando así las expectativas del Señor. Sin embargo, la parábola pone un mayor énfasis en los buenos frutos traídos por los discípulos que, felices con el don que recibieron, no lo mantuvieron escondido con temor y celos, sino que lo aprovecharon al compartirlo y participando de él. ¡Sí, lo que Cristo nos ha dado se multiplica al dar! Es un tesoro hecho para gastarlo, invertirlo y compartirlo con todos, como nos enseñó el apóstol Pablo, ese gran administrador de los talentos de Jesús. La enseñanza del Evangelio que nos ofrece la liturgia hoy también ha tenido un fuerte efecto a nivel histórico y social, fomentando un espíritu activo y emprendedor en el pueblo cristiano. El mensaje central, sin embargo, se refiere al espíritu de responsabilidad con el que se recibe el Reino de Dios: una responsabilidad para con Dios y la humanidad. Esta actitud del corazón está perfectamente encarnada en la Virgen María que, al recibir el don más precioso de todos, el mismo Jesús, lo ofreció al mundo con inmenso amor. Pidámosle que nos ayude a ser “siervos buenos y fieles” para que algún día podamos entrar “en el gozo de nuestro Señor”.

Evangelio: San Mateo 25:14-30

Jesús narra la parábola de los talentos: en la historia éstos son las monedas de plata dadas a tres hombres. Dos de ellos invierten las monedas y doblan el valor, pero el tercero entierra sus monedas en la tierra y no gana nada. Este mensaje de Jesús significa que debemos usar de lleno los talentos que hemos recibido.

fruto. Jesús nos invita a
