Pastor’s Musing A psychology instructor had just finished a lecture on mental health and was giving an oral test. “Speaking specifically about manic depression,” she asked, “How would you diagnose a

patient who walks back and forth screaming at the top of his lungs one minute, then sits in a chair weeping uncontrollably the next?” A young man in the rear back of the classroom said, “He’s probably a basketball coach.”

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Second Sunday of Easter (or of Divine Mercy) Monday: The Annunciation of the Lord Tuesday: St. Vincent Ferrer Thursday: St. John Baptist de la Salle

Message from the Pastor W elcome to St. Ambrose ! We are so glad you are able to join us

today to celebrate the Second Sunday of Easter (Sunday of Divine Mercy). JOINING THE COMPANY OF BELIEVERS: What will help you to believe? Today’s scripture readings tell of faith and doubt. They offer stories “recorded to help you believe,” as the passage from John’s Gospel (20:31) remarks today. There is an urgency about this. On this Second Sunday of Easter we are challenged to join the company of believers—countless men and women who witnessed the power of the apostles’ faith. There is no doubt that this power comes from Jesus Christ. The second reading, from the book of Revelation, reports John’s mystical vision of the Son of Man, who proclaims, “Once I was dead, but now I live” (Revelation 1:18). The Gospel gathers everyone but Thomas to see the Risen Jesus and receive the Holy Spirit from him. Like Thomas, we who have come along later must have faith so that we can have life. Have a wonderful week—Remember—the most beautiful thing is to see a person smiling; and even more beautiful is knowing that you are the reason behind it!

HELPING YOUR NEIGHBOR: If you truly want to help the soul of your neighbor, you should approach God first with all your heart. Ask God simply to fill you with charity

. . . with it you can accomplish what you desire. —St. Vincent Ferrer

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK Q. “Whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven.” I can understand that. But what is meant by “Whose sins you retain, they are retained?”

A. The mission bestowed on the disciples by the risen Lord, in the power of the Holy Spirit, was twofold. They were to celebrate God’s forgiveness of the sinner who repented. But they were also to pronounce judgment on the sins which are not repented. In other words, to tell people that they are retained or living in sin unless they repent and change. In today’s climate of political correct-ness, calling a sin a sin is not fashionable.

APRIL IS CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH Bullying Part I Excerpt from Virtus bulletin by Deacon Anthony P. Rizzuto, PhD First, let’s define what we’re talking about…bullying happens when someone keeps hurting, frightening, threatening, or leaving someone out on purpose. Bullying is unfair and one-sided, and may consist of hitting, teasing, taunting, spreading rumors and gossip, stealing, or excluding someone from a group. It is carried out with the intent to harm someone. It is often a repeated activity, but may also occur as a one-time event. Bullying always involves a power imbalance. The person bullying has more power due to factors of age, size, strength, support of friends, or access to resources (such as toys and other belongings), and uses this power in a deliberately hurtful way…Although national surveys indicate that childhood violence and abuse

(Including bullying) have declined in recent years, research continues to illustrate that, even while declining, bullying remains a highly prevalent behavior. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. The Archdiocese of Miami runs one of the most robust awareness and prevention programs in the country. For more information contact the Safe Environment Office at 305-762-1250.
