STACEY BOYS CROSS COUNTRY WINS DISTRICT MEET

Last Wednesday at the UIL District 29A Cross Country Meet held at Bandera City Park, the boys cross country team from Stacey edged out the strong team from Mason and took the team championship by placing three runners in the top ten positions. In Cross Country scoring for team awards, points are related to a runner’s order of finish, and the team with the fewest number of points wins. At least five runners, but no more than seven, can represent a team and the first five runners are used for scoring purposes. Stacey’s first runner was in the third position overall (Alex Betancourt), the second runner from Stacey was in the fifth position (Cory Johnson), the third runner was eighth (Dardo Salgado), the fourth place runner was thirteenth (Brady Epley), and the fifth Stacey runner finished in the eighteenth position (Jamaal Buchanan) for a total of forty-five points.

At the district meets across the state, the top three teams advance to the next level of competition, which is the Regional Meet. The UIL Region IV Cross Country Meet will take place this Saturday at the San Antonio National Shooting Complex located off 471/Culebra Rd. near Taft High School. But wait, that’s not all! Besides the top three teams advancing to the Regional Meet, the top ten runners, or what is referred to in Cross Country as “individuals”, also advance. Once again, as she has done in previous years, Jennifer Zimmerman finds herself coming out of the District Meet as an individual and competing in the Regional Meet. Jennifer raced to a fourth place finish in the meet last week.

For many of the other Stacey Cross Country runners, it marks the end of a grueling season. In the early part of the season when temperatures were in the hundreds, runners were pounding the pavement in the afternoon sun just trying to stay hydrated and cool enough to survive. To beat the heat, the cross country runners practiced early in the morning when their classmates were fast asleep. Most Saturdays, the runners were traveling to New Braunfels or Hondo or various race sites spending most of the day competing in races. It’s truly been a long, hot road to this point, but most would agree well worth the experience and the reward.

Stacey Profile: Kathryn Henry

By: Aliyah Pettyjohn, Stacey Junior

************************************************************** 1. Where were you born? I was born in Houghton Michigan, but I only lived there until I was two. My father was in the Army, so I moved around all my life. 2. Do you have any sibilings? if yes, then how many and tell me about them. Yes, I do have siblings. I have an older brother who is an Infantry Officer in the Army. He has three beautiful children. I have another older brother who is a firefighter in Colorado and a twin sister who is a stay-at- home mother to her two boys in Virginia. 3. What did you do before you came to Stacey? Before Stacey I lived in Colorado Springs, CO and taught high school English, 9th grade world literature, 11th grade American Literature, and 12th grade mass media at Falcon High School. My husband and I got married in April, and we moved to Texas in July. 4. What job did you do in the Army? I was an Engineer Officer in the Army. While deployed, my platoon was a “Sapper” platoon and we were on call for IED and other “ordinance” detection and “disposal”. My company also planned and developed a new training facility for Iraqi Soldiers, as well as new operating bases for American soldiers. 5. What do you like to do on the weekends? I like to go Texas sight-seeing with my husband, we like to do road races, triathlons and biathlons. We live on a farm also, so sometimes just hanging out with the animals is fun. 6. What is your favorite sport? I have always been a runner. I ran cross country and track in high school and college and have always been so enamored with an athlete’s ability to continue to push herself. 7. What is the quote that you live your life by? “Sometimes you just have to take the leap and build your wings on the way down.” ― Kobi Yamada 8.What is your favorite food? Burgers…all kinds! 9. Do you have any pets? Yes! I have two dogs, Sage a black lab and Remington a Charcoal Lab. 10.What kind of music do you like? Country!

New Items in the Media Center Bright and attractive materials draw more readers (research-based), and our LISD media center is always excited to share news about what’s new for our patrons. Every week or two we notify our campuses of new materials that we have received. Many of these come in response to requests from students and faculty, while others come from awards lists and best-of-the-best reviews. Our supportive PTSO and other friends have also donated many of these great titles. Come see!

Here are some statistics about what has come in, and some titles that are already proving quite popular.

New materials received since the start of this school year:

496 books and media

New picture books for our youngest readers: 101 new books

New fiction for our elementary readers 326 books and media

New fiction, non-fiction for our TWEEN readers (upper elementary, middle school students)

39 books and media

New high fiction 32 titles

New high school non-fiction 53 titles and media

We love that our students keep our Suggestions Box full of titles that they want to read, and we work hard to respond in a timely manner. Come share YOUR requests, and check out something you and your family will enjoy. Happy reading!
