The rupee weakened 0.3 percent to 52.3225 per dollar in Mumbai, bringing its decline in 2011 to 14.6 percent. The BSE India Sensitive In- dex (SENSEX) of shares tumbled 22 percent in the period as investors sold emerging market assets on concern the U.S. and Europe will struggle to curb deficits. The rupee’s slump is raising costs for companies including Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (HUVR) and Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (MSIL) A fur- ther drop will also spur price gains and increase fuel subsidy costs in Asia’s third-largest economy, which imports 80 percent of its fuel. Infla- tion has held above 9 percent for 11 consecutive months, while higher interest rates are threatening to slow the pace of economic expansion. “It is now very difficult to look for reversal in rupee depreciation when the Indian economy is struggling with high inflation, low growth,” said J. Moses Harding, executive vice president at IndusInd Bank Ltd. (IIB) in Mumbai. “It is possible that rupee has shifted into a higher base of 51 per dollar with the next objective at 54 to 56 per dollar.” The currency dropped past the previous low of 52.18, reached on March 3, 2009. It earlier touched 52.73, the weakest level since at least 1973, when data became available. Impact on Companies “There is impact on companies and it’s a problem,” Reserve Bank of In- dia Deputy Governor Subir Gokarn said. “But, any action we take now, if any, has to take into account the fact that these actions might have conse- quences further down the road.” Offshore investors pulled $1.8 bil- lion from local equities since foreign holdings reached a record $104.4 billion in July, according to data from the market regulator. “What will hurt more is that the depreciation has been so steep and sudden,” Maruti’s Chief Financial Officer Ajay Seth said in an interview yesterday. “Volatility in the rupee will be severe in the next three to six months” because of global economic concerns, he said. Finance Minister Pranab Mukher- jee raised the government’s borrow- ing target by 13 percent to a record 4.7 trillion rupees ($90 billion) in September, signaling the gap in pub- lic finances is widening as a slowing economy cuts revenue. Income was 37.2 percent of the annual target in the six months through September, compared with 58.4 percent achieved a year earlier, official data show. Growth Forecast Cut The Reserve Bank cut the nation’s growth forecast to 7.6 percent from 8 percent, and the rupee’s slide inflated the import bill and pushed the trade shortfall to a 17-year high of $19.6 billion in October. India’s current-account deficit could widen, from 2.6 percent of gross domestic product in the fiscal year through March 2011, if oil prices continue to push up the import bill, the central bank said last month. The current account, the broadest measure of trade, showed a deficit of $14.1 billion in the three months through June, compared with a short- fall of $5.4 billion the previous quar- ter, according to central bank data. “The rupee is being pressured by India’s deficits and slowing growth with no sign of monetary easing,” said Suresh Kumar Ramanathan, a currency strategist at CIMB Invest- ment Bank Bhd. in Kuala Lumpur. “We see the rupee’s peak at 54 to a dollar.” Overdone The rupee is expected to reverse its losses once the European crisis is resolved as its slide has been driven by global dynamics, central bank Governor Duvvuri Subbarao told reporters in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad today. The Reserve Bank will manage the volatility, he said. India’s growth potential is “good”, according to Vishnu Varathan, an economist at Mizuho Corporate Bank Ltd. in Singapore, who be- lieves the rupee’s weakness is “a tad overdone.” “The concerns are warranted but India can outgrow its deficits and these are good opportunities for lon- ger term investors to buy the rupee,” he said. “They’ll need deeper pock- ets, but there is no reason to think the rupee is beyond the point of no return.” Varathan predicts the rupee will rebound to 46.5 a dollar by the end of next year. ‘No Bottom’ Three-month offshore forwards traded at 53.46 to the dollar, com- pared with 53.05 yesterday. Forwards are agreements to buy or sell assets at a set price and date. Non-deliverable contracts are settled in dollars. (INFO) sees “no bot- tom,” for the rupee unless the central bank steps in, Chief Financial Officer V. Balakrishnan at India’s second- largest software exporter, said in an interview to Bloomberg UTV. The volatility and uncertainties are “im- pacting the momentum of business,” he said. The government yesterday signaled the central bank may not sell dollars “aggressively” to stem the local currency’s depreciation as rupee-liquidity is tight. R. Gopalan, secretary of economic affairs at the fi- nance ministry, said the central bank’s ability to intervene in the foreign- exchange market is “limited.” Banks borrowed 1.32 trillion rupees today from the monetary authority’s over- night facility, the most since March, according to data from the central bank. ‘Death Spiral’ “The Reserve Bank of India’s ability to intervene is hampered by the squeeze in system liquidity,” In- dusInd’s Harding wrote in a note yesterday. “Aggressive intervention by the RBI in the spot market will lead to higher call money rate.” India’s call money rate, at which banks lend to each other overnight, was at 8.65 percent, 15 basis points, or 0.15 percentage point, more than the RBI’s main lending rate. The central bank has raised its repurchase rate 13 times since the start of 2010 to 8.5 percent to help cool persistent inflation. Eight of the 10 most-traded Asian currencies have declined this year, on concern the U.S. and Europe’s debt woes will slow global growth and sap demand for emerging-market assets. The rupee’s fall is due to global uncertainty, and any central bank ac- tion may not help, Finance Minister Mukherjee told reporters in New Delhi today. Increased intervention is one option to stop the rupee’s “death spiral,” which is posing “serious macro-economic dangers,” Patrick Perret-Green, Singapore-based head of foreign-exchange and rates at Citi- group Inc., wrote in an e-mail today. “However, the likely cure will be time.” Pranab Mukherjee, India’s finance minister, raised the government’s borrowing target by 13 percent to a record 4.7 trillion rupees ($89 billion) in September, signaling the gap in public finances is widening as a slowing economy cuts revenue. India - Pakistan Trade Talks : Cautious MoodISLAMABAD (Dawn): The business

community reacted cautiously over a joint statement issued in New Delhi after the conclusion of two-day talks between commerce secretaries of Pakistan and India. Talking to President of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mian Ibrar Ahmad welcomed easing of visa restrictions for business community of the two countries. He said the denial of visa was a non-tariff

barrier because it barred businessmen from marketing their products in each other`s countries.

Ahmad supported the government move to liberalize trade regimes with India and said it would be a win-win situation for both countries. A push to further liberalization of business visa arrangements are planned.

President of the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry Yasir Sakhi Butt said the announcements about easing of visa for business community did not matter if such decisions were not implemented in litter and spirit.

He said that there were more hurdles from the Indian side in issuing business visas.

“The Indian High Commission in Islamabad recently denied visa to our two members who wanted to see buyers of their products in India,” Mr Butt said.

It was noted that the interior ministry of Pakistan and India`s ministry of home affairs had reached a broad understanding to put in place reciprocal arrangements, which shall substantially liberalise the visa provisions for business persons.

India and Pakistan have agreed that a joint group of experts would hold its first m e e t i n g b e f o r e January regarding trade in petroleum products.

A source in the commerce ministry said that Pakistan was expected to lift a ban on import of petrol

from India. Islamabad allowed import of diesel from India in 2009 but no supplies were made so far because of comparatively cheaper price offered by other oil producing countries, the source said. The withdrawal of restriction on oil import from India could open a new market for Indian refineries.

The two sides also reached a broad understanding on grid connectivity between Amritsar and Lahore to enable trade of up to 500MW of power.

Karachi Chamber chief Mian Ibrar Ahmad appreciated the government`s move to import electricity from India. “Import of electricity from India is a better step than producing power through rental plants.”

Post-Bali, China talks of Love for India to Keep US AwayBy saiBal dasgupta

BEIJING (TOI): The winds of change blowing in from Bali seem to have suddenly altered China’s approach toward India. The Chinese foreign ministry on Monday waxed eloquent about China-India friendship using phrases that put India in the limelight.

“There is no power in the world that can prevent the development of bilateral relations between the two countries,” said foreign ministry spokesman Liu Weimin soon after the meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chinese premier Wen Jiabao on the sidelines of ASEAN talks in Bali last Friday.

China’s obvious signal to New Delhi is to keep the United States out of the picture in the process of developing bilateral relationship and settling disputes that include Beijing’s opposition to ONGC’s investment in oil exploration in

South China Sea. But the foreign ministry stuck to its earlier opposition to India’s entry in the oil exploration field along with Vietnamese firms in the Sea area.

“As for the discussion on South China Sea issue, China has expounded its position many times. We don’t hope to see outside forces involved in that dispute, and do not want to see foreign companies engage in activities that will undermine China’s sovereignty, rights and interests,” Liu said.

Replying to a question on whether China was isolated at the ASEAN meet during discussions on South China Sea, Liu said, “I do not agree with the term ‘isolation’ . In general, the meeting centered on the theme of cooperation, development and solidarity, and has yielded practical results.”

Liu said India focused on the need to “uphold the larger interest of regional peace and stability, and do

more things that will contribute to mutual trust and cooperation”.

“China’s position on this is clear and consistent,” Liu said. “The dispute should be solved between countries directly concerned through friendly consultation and negotiation. Outside intervention or taking the issue to a multilateral forum will only complicate the issue,” he said.

On business cooperat ion, Liu said, “The two sides enjoy great cooperation potential and we hope to continue to create favorable conditions for free flow of commodities, technology, finance and services, and encourage enterprises from both sides to invest and have contract cooperation to the benefit of both countries and peoples.”

Liu quoted the Indian government as assuring China that the strategic cooperation partnership is beneficial to both countries.

The Chinese ministry of officials waxed eloquent about India and wants to do everything possible to make India its closest ally as China sees India as an emerging, fast growing economy. China and India are going to encourage free flow of trade, technology, finance and services along with investments in each other’s nations

India Asks US to Depict Boundaries CorrectlyINDIA - THE POLITICAL SCENENEW DELHI (IE): India

took exception to ‘gross inaccuracies’ in its map on the US State Department website showing PoK as part of Pakistan and asked Washington to depict the boundaries of the country correctly.

“The government is aware of the gross inaccuracies, in the map of India, on the US State Department website. The government has consistently rejected i n c o r r e c t d e p i c t i o n of India’s borders on maps used by the US government,” the Ministry of External Affairs said here.

“It has used every opportunity to convey to the US side its concern in this regard, and has asked that these maps be corrected. This position was reiterated by a senior MEA official to the US Deputy Chief

of Mission today, who assured us that the US Embassy would convey our concerns to the US State Department,” it said.

Under its A-Z list of countries, the website www.state. gov carries profiles and maps of all countries with which the US has diplomatic relations and in the case of India, the map differs from the official Indian map in that it ignores India’s claim on Pakistan-occupied Kashmir by not even acknowledging its disputed status.

Suspected NRI Wife of InfidelityA ‘Perfect Murder’ that Went Awry

By RaJ KanwaRHe had done an intensive

research on internet and thought that he had planned a “perfect murder” but things went awry, thanks to some overzealous acts on his part those landed him in the police net. The police crime branch investigators say that Sumit Handa (31) murdered Niranjani Pillai (27), his wife of four years, on the night of October 29 at his residence in Vishwakarma Colony in Pul Prahladpur near Okhla.

Niranjani was a native of Durban in South Africa. Sumit, it is learned, b e f r i e n d e d h e r father Rama Pillai whom he first met w h i l e w o r k i n g with a Delhi-based travel agency. Sumit then went to South Africa in May 2005 at the instance of her father, Rama Pillai. In Durban, he was employed as the chief sales executive at Rama Pillai’s garments shop. It was there tha t Sumi t met Niranjani. Gradually, the two fell in love and had a court marriage on February 5, 2007. Five months later, Sumit resigned from his father-in-law’s business and joined Serendipity Tours in Durban.

The story of this crime of passion, as pieced together by the crime branch, makes a bizarre reading. Sumit suspected his wife of infidelity; there were undoubtedly some differences between Sumit and his wife which kept on simmering. There was an altercation on October 29. It appeared that Sumit, in fact, had made preparations to kill his wife and that altercation came as a handy excuse, according to Sanjay Bhatia,

additional deputy commissioner of police. He reportedly picked up a kitchen knife and repeatedly stabbed his wife. Thereafter he strangulated her with the charging lead of his laptop. He kept the body in the bathroom all of the night. He then cleaned up the place and even engaged a workman to replace the blood-stained tiles in his bathroom. He also burnt his wife’s air tickets and the passport so as not to leave any incriminating evidence. He

hacked the dead body into pieces and packed those in a large trolley bag; in another bag he packed Niranjani’s clothes.

More bizarre was the act of transporting hacked pieces of the body to a jungle in Rai area in Haryana. Sumit phoned a friend and requested him to drive him to Haryana where he wanted to deliver some “goods” to one of his cousins. His friend dropped Sumit near a gas station, short distance from a jungle. Sumit bought two liters of petrol and carried the bags 200 meters into the deserted jungle. He then placed the bags on top of each other and poured the gasoline and then made a bonfire.

Sumit took home a circuitous

route to his residence, hitching rides on trucks, traveling by buses and auto rickshaw. On November 2, Sumit calmly walked into a police station and lodged a complaint stating that his wife had fled with another man after drugging him and stealing precious jewelry from his house. At that time he was quite cool and collected. He then left for Agra and told his parents and in-laws that Niranjani had run away with another man. In

office, in continued to pretend that his wife had run away, and sent emails imploring her to come back. His laptop showed that he searched “burnt dead bodies” several time to ascertain whether a n y b u r n t d e a d body had recently been recovered in Haryana.

D u r i n g t h e i n t e r r o g a t i o n , the investigating officers had become suspicious of Sumit’s demeanor and some of his odd acts. They wondered why Sumit had sent back his

sister with his one year old son to Agra seven days before the murder. It was during this interrogation that Sumit eventually confessed to his crime and took the police to the site where he had burned the dead body. The police have recovered a saw and a knife used in the crime. He later claimed that he was innocent and that his wife had slashed her own wrists and committed suicide. However, he could not explain how his wife’s body was completely burnt.

The police are confident that they had enough forensic evidence to get Sumit convicted.

Raj Kanwar is a Dehra Dun based journalist writing columns for several national publications.

Niranjani Pillai (27) and Sumit Handa (31) in happier times, later she was suspected of having an affair. Police are still investigating the the murder as many things are unclear

By RaJ KanwaRThe prime ministerial ambitions

that BJP’s top four leaders nurse have now assumed farcical proportions. The first among the prime ministerial “hopefuls” is the octogenarian leader, LK Advani who had missed the bus in 1996 when Atal Behari Vajpayee was the prime minister only for 13 days. Again when the NDA came to power in 1998, Vajpayee was the obvious choice.

Having twice missed the bus, Ad-vani is now playing his cards rather carefully, or so he thinks. Before undertaking his current “Jan Chetna Rath Yatra”, Advani denied being the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate. Yet, he encouraged or permitted Uma Bharti to make an announcement from his Rath at Varanasi that the BJP should formally anoint Advani as its candidate for the prime minis-ter’s post as “he is the most capable leader”. Alluding to a similar Rath Yatra in the past by VP Singh against corruption, Bharti had stated that “it straight away took him to the prime ministerial chair.” The cat was now out of the bag, and Advani’s inten-tions became crystal clear. Yet a few days later, when this announcement boomeranged, Advani denied that he harbored any such ambitions. But soon Advani took a somersault when he made another statement later that he would decide about being the BJP nominee for the top job provided his

health permitted. Now at the end of his 38-day long

journey on 20 November in Delhi with a public meeting at the Ramlila Ground, most commentators again openly touted about his prime min-isterial ambitions. This Rath Yatra must have taken a heavy toll on the health and temper of this octogenar-ian leader. No wonder, the tired leader was at his vituperative best in criticiz-ing the Manmohan Singh led UPA government. Interestingly, the other prime ministerial hopefuls barring Narendra Modi of Gujarat were also present at the podium.

His turbulent journey had many ups and downs; he was cheered by party flags and flowers at many places while he was jeered with rotten eggs at others. His luxuriously built Rath on an Isuzu chassis at a cost of Rs. 2.3 million had all the comforts and state of art communication facilities,

public address system, an elevator (sky lift), television and computer. There was also a well furnished space for Advani to rest and also a chamber for interaction with party functionar-ies. A little known fact about this yatra was that Advani often spent nights in 5-star government guest houses and even took to flying in helicopters and aircrafts.

Narendra Modi- another aspi-rant:

Narendra Modi is another obvious aspirant though he very much denies any such ambitions. Yet, the large legion of his supporters and admirers do not miss an opportunity by mak-ing loud noises about his outstanding credentials and projecting him as the best choice for the top job. Two weeks ago, a political analyst was at pains to explain with facts and figures that much of Gujarat achievements in the field of development were the legacy of the earlier Congress governments for which Modi was now claiming all the credit. Be that as it may, Modi is very much one of the front runners in this prime ministerial race. Besides other perceived plus points, age too is on his side. Even then Modi’s ambi-tions are quite evident. For appear-ances sake, Modi accorded a lavish welcome with a helicopter raining flowers when Advani’s yatra reached Gujarat. Yet, there was no genuine bonhomie between the two leaders.

The other two strong contenders

for this top job, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitely, leaders of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha respectively too have the age ad-vantage. They both are suave and as articulate as Advani and Modi are. Though the Delhi duo have cleverly hidden their ambitions and are keep-ing their cards close to their chest, yet their stance is not fooling politi-cal observers or even party insiders. Surprisingly, both Sushma and Arun pleaded sudden “indisposition” as the cause for not turning up to wish good luck to Advani when his Rath Yatra began.

The mutual political antipathy that the foursome nurse against one an-other becomes evident when one watches their sullen and grim faces in a group appearance on news chan-nels. One would imagine that these leaders forgot to wear their smiles when they left homes.

Three weeks ago, BJP president Nitin Gadkari put a spanner in the wheel of these four leaders when he quietly announced his decision to contest the next Lok Sabha elections due in 2014. This twist in the tale has caused some worry to these four aspirants for the top job in the country. Though Gadkari has denied that he was aspiring to become India’s Prime Minister, yet nobody believes him. His plus points are the solid back-ing of RSS; and being the youngest among all the contenders.

Much to the embarrassment of Advani, whose Rath Yatra has been launched ostensibly as an anti-cor-ruption crusade against the Congress, was the recent arrest of the former Karnataka’s BJP chief minister BS Yeddyurappa (BSY) on the charges of corruption. Like most VIPs, BSY too developed chest pain within hours of being imprisoned and was shifted to an intensive care unit (ICU) of a government hospital. The irony of this was very apparent with eggs on the face of BJP leadership.

Even though BJP- supported can-didate Kuldeep Bishnoi in the Hisar Parliamentary constituency has won the election on the shoulders of a blatant anti-Congress campaign by Anna Hazare and his team, this win should be more of a discomfiture to the party since the victor’s reputation is more dubious than that of the losing Congress candidate.

Political observers describe this five legged prime ministerial race among the BJP hopefuls as a farce and sham. The next general elections are nearly two and a half years away, and the mood of the electorate could change in favor of the Congress over this long period. In any case, the voter is very fickle and there is no guaran-tee which way the wind will blow at that time. One analyst says that BJP is too naïve and ambitious to start counting their chickens before they are hatched.

November 25, 201132 OPINIONSOUTH ASIAAnna Hazare’s Wax Statue Unveiled in Maharashtra

LONAVLA (Maharashtra): People wanting to ‘see’ Anna Hazare now won’t have to go to the remote Ralegan-Siddhi village or wait for his next agitation. A visit to the Celebrity Wax Musuem here will ensure a ‘meeting’

with the anti-graft crusader without the long queues and security clearances.

A wax statue of Hazare was unveiled Saturday evening in Varsoli village on the outskirts of this hill-station, around 175 km from Mumbai, vowing the weekend visitors.

It was shown to Hazare Saturday at his native village in the adjacent Ahmednagar district.

“Hazare appeared very pleased at seeing his wax duplicate and even touched it a couple of times out of curiosity,” an aide told IANS.

Hazare has donated his trademark Gandhi cap worn during his hunger strike for the Jan Lokpal bill in the capital, and also his clothes

for the statue. Celebrity Wax Museum Director Sujith

Sukumaran, an acclaimed artist, said Hazare’s cap has a great heritage value and would be a treasured possession for the museum.

The s ta tue was unvei led Saturday to coincide with the death anniversary of Hazare’s mother, he said.

“Hazare is a hero of this generation. He moved the masses against corruption... That is why we decided to immortalise him in wax,” an excited Sukumaran told IANS.

Initially, museum authorities were hesitant about the proposal, fearing Hazare may not permit his wax statue.

“He not only gave us permission, but took time off from his schedule to patiently give us

measurements,” Sukumaran said. The statue has been crafted by India’s top

wax sculptor Sunil Kandalloor. It took him 25 days to complete the task.

The air-conditioned museum has statues of 32 prominent personalities including Mahatma Gandhi, India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, English comic actor Charlie Chaplin, late musician Michael Jackson, and several other living and dead legends.

Next week, a statue of former cricketer Kapil Dev will be inaugurated, followed by similar statues of actors Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and his daughter-in-law Aishwarya Abhishek Bachchan.

Bangladesh 1971 War Crimes Trial BeginsBy anisuR Rahman

DHAKA (Outlook): Bangladesh today began the controversial war crimes trial with a top Islamist party leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi being the first suspect to go on trial for allegations of genocide, rape, murder and arson committed during the country’s 1971 Liberation war.

Chief Prosecutor Ghulam Arieff Tipu and senior prosecutor Syed Rezaur Rahman read out a lengthy statement before the three-judge International Crimes Tribunal at the Supreme Court complex where Sayeedi stood in the dock. “We brought 20 charges of ‘crimes against humanity’ including genocide, rape, murder, arson and looting committed during the Liberation War,” said Rezaur Rahman.

He said the opening statement, including 61 of the 90-pages, described the brief general history of the crime against humanity and the major suspects. “We expect to read the entire statement tomorrow when the hearing would resume,” he said. Court officials said the tribunal was expected to hear the defence argument from December 7 after recording the prosecution side.Sayeedi, the leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), a key ally of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, is the first suspect to be charged with atrocities including genocide, rape and religious persecution. Jamaat leaders and several other right-wing groups are accused of siding with the then Pakistani junta in 1971. Five of Jamaat’s top leaders, including its chief Motiur Rahman Nizami and Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojahid and Sayeedi have been detained along with a BNP lawmaker Salahuddin Qader Chowdhury.

On March 25, 2010, the Awami League government set up a special tribunal for the trial of “war criminals” accused of genocide

and those who sided with the Pakistani military during the bloody ‘Liberation War’. 71-year-old Sayedee, who has been detained to face 20 charges of crimes against humanity, including genocide, rape, murder, arson and looting committed during the Liberation War, could face death by hanging if found guilty by the ICC. He has denied the charges being looked into by the ICC, which is a domestic set-up with no United Nations oversight or involvement. A former BNP minister Abdul Alim has also been accused of committing crimes against humanity during the bloody freedom struggle. Bangladesh’s Attorney General Mahbubey Alam sat with the prosecution team as the hearing began today. The defence team drew a number of senior lawyers, mostly belonging to main opposition BNP. The defence lawyers included former parliamentary speaker Jamiruddin Sircar and former law minister Maudud Ahmed, Supreme Court Bar Association president Khandker Mahbub Hossain. Witnesses said the defence lawyers wanted the hearing to be suspended until the tribunal gave an explanatory statement on an earlier ruling on their plea questioning the legal authority of the chair of the court of trying the suspects. It is alleged that he was involved in a “mass enquiry commission” for a “symbolic and mock trial” of the war criminals in 1993. “The law does not empower us to make a ruling ordering the removal of a fellow judge,” said the tribunal in a brief order last week after a hearing during which chairman of the panel of judges Justice Nazamul Huq was absent. The tribunal, however, ordered the hearing on the main charge against Sayeedi to continue saying an explanatory order on their earlier ruling would be given on November 23. The tribunal asked the defence lawyers to submit a list of their “defence witnesses” by December 7.

Azharuddin Dismisses Kambli’s Claim of ‘fixed’ Semi-finalNEW DELHI (Dawn): Former

Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin on Friday lashed out at Vinod Kambli for hinting that India’s 1996 World Cup semi-final match could have been fixed, saying

the allegations have been made by a person who lacks character and were “absolutely rubbish”.

‘‘Absolutely rubbish, whatever he (Kambli) is talking. He doesn’t know what he is talking, when you have people who have no character and no background come on TV and talk absolute rubbish in front of the nation and demeaning all the players who played in the team, it is totally disrespectful and its very sad,” a livid Azhar told reporters.

Azhar, who was the Indian captain at that time, said the decision to field first was a collective decision. “May be when he was sitting in the meeting, he must have been sleeping,” he added.

Kambli, a former Indian cricketer who has often been embroiled in controversies both on and off the field, on Thursday raised suspicion on the 1996 World Cup semifinal between India and Sri Lanka and said he found “something amiss” in the game.

“I will never forget the 1996 match because my career ended after this and I was dropped from the team. I was stunned by India’s decision to field,” Kambli had

said. Azhar, however, refuted all the allegations leveled against him saying it was a team decision to field after winning the toss.

“It was a team decision which was taken by all the team members that when we win the toss we will field. Whatever he is talking is absolutely rubbish and nonsense.”

Azhar also refuted the claims that Kambli was made a scapegoat, saying the cricketer got enough chances to prove himself but failed to capitalize on the opportunities. “He is not made a scapegoat. I think if he had taken his cricket seriously he wouldn’t be in this position now,” the former captain added.

Azhar said the only reason behind India’s defeat against Sri Lanka in the contentious semifinal match at Eden Gardens was that the team did not perform up to the mark. “We played badly, we lost the match. There is nothing to do with toss or batting first or fielding first. If you don’t play well you lose the match, as simple as that,” said Azhar.

The cricketer also rebutted the call for a probe into the match saying will you have a probe for every match India lost. “Why should there be a probe after so many years. What is the probe you are talking about, I don’t know why people talk about this probe, then for every match there is probe,” Azhar said.

Azharuddin former Indian Captain called it rubbish when Kambli stated that the 1996 World cup Semi Final could have been fixed

West Indies youngsters make India ToilBy siddaRth RavindRan

MUMBAI (Cricinfo): West In-dies’ top four made half-centuries for only the third time in Tests, to quell fears over how the young batting line-up would fare in the absence of the injured Shivnarine Chanderpaul, their most experienced and reliable batsman.

Adrian Barath and Kraigg Brathwaite gave West Indies their best start in five years, before R Ashwin briefly buoyed India’s spirits by sending back both openers bat-pad in the course of a testing spell before tea. Kirk Edwards and Darren Bravo, though, added a century stand of their own to emphatically make it West Indies’ day at the Wankhede Stadium. It was a pancake flat track but India made it even harder for their bowlers by shelling a couple of catches.

After losing the toss, MS Dhoni had hoped mois-ture in the pitch would help his quick bowlers early on, but both Ishant Sharma and debutant Varun Aaron - taking the place of the rested Umesh Yadav - got little sideways movement. Both bowl-ers consistently hit the 140kph mark, and though there were a couple of plays-and-misses, West Indies’ young openers had few serious alarms.

Spin was introduced as early as the ninth over of the match, with Pragyan Ojha trying to exploit the West Indies’ well-docu-mented trouble against the turning ball. He got some extra bounce, and a few deliveries to spin, though not enough to impede West Indies’ serene progress.

Both Barath and Brathwaite show-cased a tight defence, and there were few flamboyant strokes, with the pair preferring to score mainly by guiding the loose deliveries on offer. The first caution-to-the-wind shot came from

the usually stoic Brathwaite, who charged out and swatted Ashwin’s second delivery over midwicket for four in the 19th over. Barath also caned Ashwin for a couple of bound-aries a few overs before lunch, but he had been mostly measured in the rest of the session.

India’s bowlers were tight early on

in the second session, without manag-ing a breakthrough. Ashwin induced an inside-edge from Brathwaite to-wards VVS Laxman at backward short leg, but the ball flew just wide of the fielder. Ishant steamed in and beat the bat without finding the edge, while Aaron followed up a sharp bouncer with an inviting fuller ball that Barath

wafted at and nearly nicked. Barath chided himself for attempting that footwork-free drive, and on the other occasions when there was a momen-tary lapse of concentration, he and Brathwaite had a mid-pitch confer-ence to egg each other on.

The runs weren’t exactly coming in a torrent, but as the partnership stretched past 100, and past midway through the day, West Indies were completely in control. It was in the 51st over that India started clamber-ing back into the game as Ashwin conjured some spin and bounce on the track. Brathwaite was put down by Laxman at backward short leg, and survived a big shout for lbw off the next ball, not offering a stroke to a ball turning in. In his next over, Ashwin struck, getting the ball to jump from

a length, forcing an inside-edge from Barath on to the thigh pad that ended up as a simple catch for Dhoni. Soon after, Brathwaite followed, though his dismissal wasn’t as clear cut - there might have been some glove as the ball spun past the bat and popped off the pad to short leg.

If there were worries in the West Indian camp that those two quick wickets were the harbinger of another familiar collapse, Edwards and Bravo eased the concerns. They provided a sample of their forceful strokeplay in the short period they were in the middle before tea, and continued their cavalier scoring after the interval as well. It’s still early days in their career but their performances so far point to-wards an exciting long-term middle-order pairing for West Indies.

Ashwin continued to harry the bats-men with his variations, getting the odd delivery to jump sharply, but it was the other two spinners who produced India’s chances in the final session. Virender Sehwag got an edge down the leg side off Edwards but Dhoni couldn’t hang on to a tough chance, while Ojha was denied a wicket as Rahul Dravid put down a Bravo catch at first slip.

With the quicks not finding any re-verse-swing, they were easy to handle with the old ball. Edwards’ driving down the ground was exceptional, while Bravo relentlessly pinged the cover boundary as they went on to complete brisk half-centuries. On Wednesday, both will look to hurt India even more by kicking on to their hundreds.

(Outlook) Imtiaz Ali is a persuasive director. Delhi college boy Janardhan Jakhar’s journey to becoming rockstar Jordan has moments that tickle the imagination. The opening sequence of a rockstar racing through the streets of Rome, moving past t h e c r a z y fans, straight to his concert is kinetic. Or the scenes of the musician’s assimilation of the varied forms in his repertoire, from the Sufi strains of Nizamuddin dargah to the Gypsy fo lk on Prague’s s t r e e t s . O r the tongue-in-cheek vignette of a mata ka jagraata in Dilli. Imtiaz shoots these moments wonderfully and then goes on to cap it with a heart-tugging shehnai-guitar jugalbandi with the late Shammi Kapoor giving a nod to the late Ustad Bismillah Khan. Music as the meeting ground for our today and yesterday.

You wish there was more such instances of an artiste’s tryst with and passion for his music.

Similarly, the underlying tensions in Jordan’s family could have been better explored, specially that sassy sister-in-law who keeps sticking too close to him. But Imtiaz sidelines it for a love story that’s tragically lame and tame. And one can’t just lay the entire blame for it at

the doorstep of newcomer Nargis Fakri, despite her acute lack of expressions and irritating, silicon lips. However hard Ranbir may try (the unsteady Haryanvi accent and a ‘silly instead of the simpleton act’ notwithstanding) his character’s inexplicable attraction for her isn’t convincing enough. Their love story in the first half is as banal as a Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. Be it eating gol-gappe or seeing Jungli Jawani in Amar Talkies or drinking

narangi, the friendly banter feels simulated than spontaneous.

In the second half, Imtiaz attempts to go grand as the lovers’ passions get scaled up several notches and come dripping in pain and tragedy. But what drives the anguish? Where does the pain come from

when the love at hand is puppyish and laughably melodramatic, what with some stupid bone marrow issues holding the key. Jordan’s angst also feels more designer and sexy than real. I kept wondering what he was rebelling against, and how the ‘Free Tibet’ issue comes to figure in his rocking life? Imtiaz strikes other false notes, especially the way in which some characters on the side come and go. Moreover, he chooses

the most innocuous actors to play these roles, be it the heroine’s sister, father or husband. Even the play of words (burger and bugger) makes one cringe. In Rockstar the setting, imagery, costumes, get overwrought and orchestrated, the emotions become magnified. What Imtiaz forgets is that simplicity can sometimes talk much more. And however much you may quote Rumi, you may still not be able to reach the viewer’s soul.
