ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Hope and Forgiveness

There were some interesting conceptions of sin prevalent in the time of the Hebrew scriptures. There was the belief that God punished sin immediately. Those who suffered disease or misfortune were, therefore, sinners getting their due from the Almighty. Today's first reading hints at another kind of God. When David admits his sin, Nathan declares, "The LORD on his part has forgiven your sin" (2 Samuel 12:13b). Here was not a vengeful God but a merciful God. What good news that must have been to David and those who, like him, could be honest enough to admit their sinfulness!

Jesus is the good news of God's mercy and forgiveness incarnate. Without Jesus, perhaps the good news would have been too good to believe, too difficult to imagine. But there he is in today's Gospel, the God-man, forgiving a sinner and declaring that she is forgiven because of her great love. There is hope, then, for the rest of us sinners, if only we love enough!

SENIOR LUNCHEON REMINDER! Monday, June 20, 2016

following our 12:10pm Mass. We look forward to seeing you!

MUSIC MINISTRY ANNOUNCEMENT: AN OPPORTUNITY TO HONOR YOUR FATHER!

The Music Ministry is offering a unique opportunity to honor your Father this Father’s Day, June 19th: A “Father’s Day Choir” at our 10:30am Mass, consisting of Adult Choir members and ND parishioners (you!) who would like to pay tribute to their fathers, living and deceased, by singing “You Raise Me Up” after

Communion.

To be in the choir that morning you just have to:

1. Let Jim Keefe know that you’re interested by leaving a voicemail at (973) 538-1358 x. 109 or an email at [email protected].

2. Attend one rehearsal at Notre Dame on Wednesday, June 15, at 7pm. This is the only rehearsal – the success of the tribute rests on all the singers being prepared, so attendance is required!

BEYOND CORNERSTONE

All Cornerstone women are invited to attend the next Beyond Cornerstone meeting scheduled for Monday, June 13 at 7pm to join other faith-filled women for an evening of fellowship and prayer. This ministry is open to all women who have completed a Women's Cornerstone retreat weekend. This will be our last meeting before the summer break.

ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT Adoration Ministry Seeking Summer Help Due to Our Regular Adorers' Vacationing!

In order to keep our normal hours of adoring Jesus from 7am-7pm during the summer months, we are seeking additional Adorers to sit and spend time with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament in one hour increments.

If you can assist for just one hour on ANY Friday during the months of July and August, whether it be only one Friday or several Fridays, we would love to hear from you! Please contact Ivette Valori at 973-885-0502/[email protected], or stop by the table in our Gathering Space to fill out a form (also available on our website at www.ndcarmel.com).

“Nowhere on earth are you more loved, than by Jesus, living and truly present in the Most Blessed Sacrament ... He is really there in Person waiting just for you.” - Mother Teresa of Calcutta

St. Benedict's Chapel, Every Friday 7am - 7pm

CENTERING PRAYER: JOIN US!

Quiet reminds us that not all knowledge can be packaged into words, sentences, and speeches. Certainly, centering needs to be anchored in a spiritual life that includes many different types of prayer, but centering prayer is a uniquely deeper dive into our relationship with Jesus. (from St. Anthony Messenger).

Join us for the gift of contemplative prayer where we experience God's presence within us, closer than breathing, closer than thinking, closer than consciousness itself. We meet Tuesdays,

7pm, Thursdays, 10:30am, or the 2nd Saturday of each month at 8am. All are welcome!

POPE FRANCIS' PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR JUNE 2016

The Holy Father's universal prayer intention for June is: “That the aged, marginalized, and those who have noone may find, even within the huge cities of the world, opportunities for encounter and solidarity.”

His intention for evangelization is: “That seminarians and men and women entering religious life may have mentors who live the joy of the Gospel and prepare them wisely for their mission.”

Vatican City, 31 May 2016 (VIS)

Continued from last week… 4 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT PRAYER

#3. P P Y ...

Because you pray, God will do certain things, grant certain things, or permit certain things He otherwise would not have apart from prayer. Prayer is one of the means He uses to prepare you to receive whatever He gives and

whatever He does. If God extends great grace and mercy to you, prayer will prepare you to receive it without pride and without presumption. If God extends trial or difficulty to you, prayer will prepare you to receive it without anger and without despair. If God extends great means or great riches, prayer will prepare you to steward it faithfully instead of waste it foolishly. Prayer is like the trailblazer that goes out before you — it acknowledges your weakness and declares God’s strength, and it prepares you, no matter the circumstance, to say, “God is good.”

Stay tuned for #4! Source: Tim Challies, iBelieve.com

A SPECIAL REFLECTION ON MERCY from the Perspective of a Husband and Father

(Excerpt from The Magnificat Year of Mercy Companion) Jesus is so generous with his mercy in my life. I am learning to be attentive, because His love often touches our lives within the most ordinary circumstances. One of the enduring sources of His mercy for me is my wife and family. After nearly twenty years of marriage — and more than half of those years struggling together with my complicated and frustrating illnesses — I have come to recognize the mercy of God in my wife’s persistence in accompanying me, suffering with me, and taking care of me in so many simple things. Of course, she’s not perfect: that’s not the point. The mercy is in the dedication, the willingness to be there day after day. Jesus gives so much grace through the sacramental bond of marriage, and it is good for the spouses to depend on that grace, to ask for it, and to allow it to shape their lives.

I have also learned never to underestimate the kids. They have all the usual problems in growing up, but they have been resilient in many surprising ways. They rise to the challenge of making sacrifices and investing themselves in a family where the father has disabilities, when they see that the radical security of family life — the certainty that they are loved and protected — is founded on their parents’ trust in God’s mercy.

- John Janaro

DOROTHY DAY: A SAINT FOR OUR TIME (Excerpt from the Beacon by Fr. Ron Rolhseiser)

Sometime soon we will witness the canonization of Dorothy Day. She wasn’t the kind of saint who fits the normal conceptions of piety. She was a journalist, a peace-activist, a convert to Christianity, who, together with Peter Maurin, established the Catholic Worker Movement inspiring Christians of every denomination to take the Gospels on the streets and bring together Jesus and justice in a more

effectual way. She was a doer, not a listener. Her route to faith, Jesus and the poor, was rather unorthodox. In the years prior to her conversion she was an atheist, a communist, and a woman who had had an abortion. Her passion for God and the poor were fueled by the extreme joy and gratitude she experience with the birth of her daughter. She will, no doubt, be the first canonized saint whose photographs show a woman with a cigarette in her mouth. She showed us how we can serve God and the poor in a very complex world, and how to do it with love and color.
