Message From Carolyn Miller, Parish Catechetical Leader

Quote of the Day: "To err is human; to forgive is divine." Dear Friends, Did you know that today, the first Sunday of August, is Internaonal Forgiveness Day? Forgiveness is a tricky topic. We all want to receive it; but oen we are not so comfortable offering it. Most Catholics appreciate the forgiveness that God so generously showers on us. It is the challenge of our forgiving others that causes angst. Funny, isn’t it, that parents are quick to teach children to “say you’re sorry” oen before youngsters have the ability to appreciate those words while we adults stuer at the mere thought of apologizing. Generally speaking, we know when we have hurt or offended someone. Perhaps it is guilt or embarrassment that keeps us from acknowledging it. Perhaps it is fear that the one we have injured will be reluctant to accept our apology. Perhaps we are hoping that our inconsiderate behavior will soon be forgoen and the incident will just blow over. Any one of these thoughts gives us pause to ask for pardon. From the 1970 movie Love Story, comes the bumper-scker line, “Love means never having to say you’re sorry.” How can that be? Is it really OK not to acknowledge that we have caused another person pain? I don’t think so. “…when we’ve hurt someone we love, we absolutely need to apologize—sincerely and contritely. It’s the only way to start the healing process in a broken relaonship. In other words, love means having to say “I’m sorry” and “I forgive you.” (Ludden, 2016) Certainly that’s the message we find in the scriptures. How many mes should we forgive? Seventy mes seven! WOW! So it is that when we prayer the Our Father, the words that Jesus Himself taught us, we say, “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive others…” We seek forgiveness while we promise the same to others. Let’s celebrate Forgiveness Day by reaching out to someone who is waing to hear an apology from us. And, don’t forget in the recognion of this day…Forgive Yourself, too. Peace and joy, Carolyn Miller PCL

Apologizing doesn’t mean you are right or wrong. It just means you value your relationship more than your ego!

I don’t forgive others because I am weak. I forgive them because I am strong enough to accept the fact that people make mistakes.

Stewardship

18th Sunday in Ordinary Time Stewardship Sharing “Each day the people are to go out and gather

their daily portion; thus will I test them, to see whether they follow my instructions or not.” (E 16:4) When the Israelites gathered more than their daily por-tion of manna, the surplus became wormy and rotten. In the same way today, self-reliance, pride and ego leads to hoarding and excessive surplus of goods and money. Living a Stewardship lifestyle helps us discern our “wants” from our “needs”. Living a generous lifestyle reminds us that God will provide all that we need and that we have plenty to share.

Holy Hour of Intercession The Youth and Young Adults Office at the Diocese of Camden requested that parishes come together in Intercessory Prayers for our youth. With so many daily distractions and temptations negatively affecting the mind, body, soul and spirit of our young people, it is important that we pray for healthy interactions and cor-rect moral values in their lives. We are therefore providing time each month when parishioners can come together to pray for all children and young adults, as well as all the intentions they hold in their hearts.

Our next holy hour will be Monday, Aug. 20, 2018 (the third Monday of the month),

at 9:00 AM at Kelly Hall

Your Choices Don’t Stop With Cremation

While you may have chosen to be cremated, don’t forget to choose your final resting place. Although the Church earnestly recommends the pious custom of burying the bodies of the dead be observed, it does not however, forbid cremation unless it has been chosen for reasons which are contrary to Christian teaching. Cremated remains are the body of the deceased in a changed form. We should honor them as we honor the body. They must be reverently buried or entombed in a place reserved for the burial of the dead. When choosing cremation, there are many choices available. Visit SouthJerseyCatholicCemeteries.org to learn more or call us at 855-MyPrePlan (855-697-7375) and a member of our staff will gladly assist you.
