NOTRE DAME CHURCH HOUSTON, TEXAS APRIL 24, 2016 From the Deacon Few words may have more impact on someone than the last words that we will ever speak. Oftentimes it is asked: “What’s the last thing they said before they died?” or “Did they say anything before they lost consciousness?” We expect that these words may be more sacred or carry more weight than any other words our loved one has ever spoken. This was certainly true for Jesus. As he prepared for his impending death, Jesus said to his disciples: “I give you a new commandment: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (Jn13:34-35) His words could not have been any clearer nor could they be any more challenging to those who heard them. This was how Jesus lived. In spite of opposition and threats, Jesus always placed others first. If it was healing someone who was sick on the Sabbath or washing the feet of his disciples as he did on the first Holy Thursday, Jesus always saw himself as servant to others first. How do we follow such an example? Certainly his great commandment is not always lived out as easily as we might think especially when it involves someone whom we might not even like very much or at all. Jesus’ greatest act of love followed his final words to his disciples. He not only spoke of what he envisioned for us but Jesus was always ready to show by example what he meant when he spoke of giving oneself for others. When he died on the cross, he demonstrated his greatest act of love. For Jesus, there was no greater way to show love than to lay down his life for us. We certainly don’t have to physically die to prove our commitment to Jesus’ commandment. But we can die to self each day by caring for others first. Doing so, we more closely follow our savior in what he envisioned for us. Let us begin this week and each day by performing selfless acts of love for those around us. We may be surprised at how much we begin to change from within and more and more look like the master we follow. NOTRE DAME CHURCH HOUSTON, TEXAS APRIL 24, 2016

From the Deacon Few words may have more impact on someone than the

last words that we will ever speak. Oftentimes it is

asked: “What’s the last thing they said before they

died?” or “Did they say anything before they lost

consciousness?” We expect that these words may be

more sacred or carry more weight than any other words

our loved one has ever spoken.

This was certainly true for Jesus. As he prepared for

his impending death, Jesus said to his disciples: “I give

you a new commandment: Love one another. As I have

loved you, so you also should love one another. This is

how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have

love for one another.” (Jn13:34-35) His words could not

have been any clearer nor could they be any more

challenging to those who heard them.

This was how Jesus lived. In spite of opposition and

threats, Jesus always placed others first. If it was

healing someone who was sick on the Sabbath or

washing the feet of his disciples as he did on the first

Holy Thursday, Jesus always saw himself as servant to

others first. How do we follow such an example?

Certainly his great commandment is not always lived

out as easily as we might think especially when it

involves someone whom we might not even like very

much or at all.

Jesus’ greatest act of love followed his final words to his

disciples. He not only spoke of what he envisioned for

us but Jesus was always ready to show by example what

he meant when he spoke of giving oneself for others.

When he died on the cross, he demonstrated his greatest

act of love. For Jesus, there was no greater way to show

love than to lay down his life for us.

We certainly don’t have to physically die to prove our

commitment to Jesus’ commandment. But we can die

to self each day by caring for others first. Doing so, we

more closely follow our savior in what he envisioned for

us. Let us begin this week and each day by performing

selfless acts of love for those around us. We may be

surprised at how much we begin to change from within

and more and more look like the master we follow.

In Christ,

Deacon Frank

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER ____________________________________________________________________________________________________

nuestros seres queridos hayan dicho.

No

nosotros. Empecemos esta semana y cada día hagamos

hechos abnegados de amor por aquellos alrededor

nuestro. Puede que nos sorprendamos de cuanto

empezamos a cambiar interiormente y más y más

parezcamos como el Maestro al que seguimos.

En Cristo,

Diácono Frank
