This attempt however was ineffective during the French revolution, in the 1790s. Radicals desecrated religious figures and monuments in France, The Notre Dame Cathedral being a victim of this torture. The statues of the biblical kings of Judah located on the edge of the Cathedral were beheaded. The irony of this destruction is that the heads were mistaken for the former leaders of France and not biblical figures.
