Monday: St. Alphonsus Liguori

Are We Rich In God?

Jesus asked, “What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world, but loses his own soul?” To another man, a rich man who asked Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life, Jesus said to him that he should give away all that he had and then follow Him. Jesus also said that we cannot serve both God and mammon.

So it seems that there is something about the pursuit of money that Jesus warns us about. It’s not necessarily that having money is wrong. We ought to be rightly compensated for the work we have done. Or, we may inherit money.

What Jesus means is that if we pursue material wealth as if we expect to find ultimate satisfaction or even some kind of salvation in it, we are greatly mistaken. I don’t know from experience, but I’m told and have heard that even the wealthiest of people, people who own multinational conglomerate corporations, who live in the largest and finest of mansions, who own their own private jets and travel to the finest vacation spots, who know the greatest privileges and luxuries – even such people are left wanting more.

What Jesus said to the rich man was meant just for him. We cannot all give away all we have. For one thing, if literally everyone tried to give away all that they had, who would they be giving it to? Secondly, if everyone gave away all they had, we would all still need someone who kept their things, because we would have to go to that person and ask for charity.

The Lord is saying to us that we need to orient our entire lives and our very being toward Heaven. We must invest in the life of the world to come. We have our needs and desires in this world, and we work to earn our way. We also know that our time here is limited, that all things must pass, and that our material wealth here in this life is temporary.

The Lord knows that what He has in store for us far surpasses what having all the money in the world could provide. Those who are rich toward God and His Kingdom look forward to another kind of wealth, a wealth that does satisfy and will never turn to dust. It is the wise man who forfeits what he cannot keep, in order to gain what he cannot lose.

If we put all our hope and trust in the Lord, if we store up treasure for ourselves in Heaven, we will know true fulfillment and everlasting joy.

VINNIE’S ON BROADWAY NOTES FROM THE HEART

The volunteers at St. Vincent de Paul on Broadway would like to share with you our work that your donations and thrift shop support make possible while keeping confidential the identities of our brothers and sisters in need that we assist. The Dog Days of Summer

Do you know that we are the meanest, nastiest, people on Earth? In June a young couple brought puppy into the playroom at the Food Pantry waiting area. This prompted us to place signs on all doors stating service dogs only. (and a quick prayer that we would have no surprise food pantry inspections!) July saw the return of the happy couple who immediately entered and released puppy to play. Reception pointed out the sign. The reply was, "He's a service dog." Reception requested service papers because the puppy was not wearing the service vest. And aren't service dogs two-years-old and up? The couple split up one taking the dog out and the other getting food and making the comments. The Thrift Store has a facebook page: svdp kerr will have happenings and sales. Vinny's on Broadway will be officially 15 years-old on August 15. Since this is Assumption Day, we can all go to the earliest mass, then join The Chamber of Commerce at 9:45 for a ribbon cutting in honor of the event. When the doors open at 10, a special sale will commence on all clothing on display. Thank you for 15 years of not hoarding stuff you don't need but donating it to us. Hunters for Hunger and 40 Cans for Lent really noticeably help. Our SA Food Bank bill this spring and early summer was $1400-1700. August invoice was $3400. The second collection tends to cover stocking our Food Pantry and we have built a little reserve to cover this month. After expenses, the store sales help our financial aid office. Everything has juggled nicely so far this year.

BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door. Richard Cort tells us about The Imitation of Christ, by Thomas à Kempis.

A few weeks ago, I attended a lecture in San Antonio by Father Ron Rolheiser, who included remarks about the life and death of Dag Hammarskjold, Secretary General of the United Nations, who died in an airplane crash in what was then the Congo in 1961. He had a truly blessed inner spiritual life (as witnessed by his personal journals), and used this spirituality as part of his duties as an international diplomat. Fr. Rolheiser remarked that one of the handful of books that was found in Dag Hammarskjold’s possession at the time of the plane crash, and which he had apparently carried everywhere with him on his travels, was a copy of “The Imitation of Christ” by Thomas à Kempis. This talk got me to pull out my own copy of the book and to start going through it again. And I once again recognized what a gem this book is. Not only is it a magnificent complement to the Bible, reflecting the true spirit of what the Bible and the words of Jesus should mean to us as Catholics, but it is also one of those books that you can open to virtually any page, and immediately receive a short nugget of information and inspiration that is worthy of reflection for several days. For instance, “If, however, you seek Jesus in all things, you will surely find Him.”

“The Imitation of Christ” was written in approximately the year 1441, and has since reputedly become one of the most popular Christian books of all time. If you are looking for a book that you can just open to any page, and find words of comfort and inspiration, this is a perfect book to turn to. And if this book could inspire an international diplomat such as Dag Hammarskjold to try to bring peace and harmony to the world community, it is also a book that can inspire us to bring peace and harmony to our own lives, to our family life, and to the people around us.

A generous donor has just given us a large print edition of “The Imitation of Christ”, which is extremely easy to read. There is also an older copy with standard print, which fits conveniently in a pocket. Both are available now in the narthex. If they have both disappeared before you can get to them, leave a note for the librarian, who will notify you when a copy is again available.

“The object of catechesis is communion with Jesus Christ. Catechesis leads people to enter the mystery of Christ, to encounter him, and to discover themselves and the meaning of their lives in him” (National Directory for Catechesis/NDC).

The role of the Catechist is to help lead children and youth to Christ. According to the NDC, the call to the ministry of catechist is a vocation, an interior call, the voice of the Holy Spirit. Take time to pray and reflect to see if God is calling you to help in the very rewarding ministry. All areas of faith formation are in need of help from PK to high school/young adult. The children of Notre Dame Parish need your time and dedication.
